Severe facial dermatitis as a late complication of aesthetic rhinoplasty; a case report. (1/26)

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis, as a cutaneous complication after rhinoplasty, is of early onset, limited and transient. The cause of this dermatitis is irritant or allergic. Late onset skin complications are rare and non-inflammatory. CASE PRESENTATION: We are reporting an unexpected, severe allergic contact dermatitis of the face, in a young female, appearing one month following aesthetic rhinoplasty. She failed to respond to ordinary treatments for dermatitis. We did standard battery--including nitrofurazone, tincture of benzoin and hydrocortisone--patch test for the patient that showed sensitivity to benzoin and corticosteroid. CONCLUSIONS: In summary we report a case of a severe allergic contact dermatitis of the face, in a 21-year-old girl who underwent corrective aesthetic rhinoplasty, appearing one month following surgical operation. We were unable to find a similar report in the medical literature.  (+info)

Computational predictions of stereochemistry in asymmetric thiazolium- and triazolium-catalyzed benzoin condensations. (2/26)

The catalytic asymmetric thiazolium- and triazolium-catalyzed benzoin condensations of aldehydes and ketones were studied with computational methods. Transition-state geometries were optimized by using Morokuma's IMOMO [integrated MO (molecular orbital) + MO method] variation of ONIOM (n-layered integrated molecular orbital method) with a combination of B3LYP/6-31G(d) and AM1 levels of theory, and final transition-state energies were computed with single-point B3LYP/6-31G(d) calculations. Correlations between experiment and theory were found, and the origins of stereoselection were identified. Thiazolium catalysts were predicted to be less selective then triazolium catalysts, a trend also found experimentally.  (+info)

A new class of phytoestrogens; evaluation of the estrogenic activity of deoxybenzoins. (3/26)

Although deoxybenzoins are intermediates in the synthesis of isoflavones, their estrogenic activity has not been investigated. Eleven deoxybenzoins were synthesized and their estrogenicity was evaluated. While their affinities for estrogen receptors (ER) ERalpha and ERbeta were found grossly comparable to those of daidzein, some exhibited considerable selectivity and transcriptional bias toward ERbeta, which appeared to allow for enhancement of ER-mediated transcription via deoxybenzoin binding of ERbeta. Their activity to stimulate the proliferation of ER-positive breast cancer cells and regulate the expression of endogenous and stably transfected reporter genes differed considerably, with some inhibiting cell proliferation while effectively inducing gene expression at the same time. Molecular modeling confirmed that deoxybenzoins fit well in the ligand binding pocket of ERbeta, albeit with different orientations. Our data support the view that deoxybenzoins constitute a promising new class of ERbeta-biased phytoestrogens.  (+info)

Catalytic action of triarylstibanes: oxidation of benzoins into benzyls using triarylstibanes under an aerobic condition. (4/26)

Benzoins are simply oxidized to benzils in excellent yields with a catalytic amount of triarylstibanes under an aerobic condition. This catalytic oxidation is heteroatom-specific in the antimony compound and no reaction take place with other group 15 reagents such as triphenylphosphane, -arsane and -bismuthane. The reaction should involve an oxidation-reduction cycle between stibane Sb(III) and stiborane Sb(V) under air.  (+info)

Exploring the active site of benzaldehyde lyase by modeling and mutagenesis. (5/26)

Benzaldehyde lyase (BAL) is a thiamin diphosphate-dependent enzyme, which catalyzes the breakdown of (R)-benzoin to benzaldehyde. In essence, this is the reverse of the carboligation reaction catalyzed by benzoylformate decarboxylase (BFD). Here, we describe the first steps towards understanding the factors influencing BFD to form a CC bond under conditions wherein BAL will cleave the same bond. What are the similarities and differences between these two enzymes that result in the different catalytic activities? The X-ray structures of BFD and pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) were used as templates for modeling benzaldehyde lyase. The model shows that a glutamine residue, Gln113, replaces the active site histidines of BFD and PDC. Replacement of the Gln113 by alanine or histidine reduced the value of k(cat) for lyase activity by more than 200-fold. The residues in BFD interacting with the phenyl ring of benzoylformate have similarly positioned counterparts in BAL but Ser26, the residue known to interact with the carboxylate group of benzoylformate, has been replaced by an alanine (Ala28). The BAL A28S variant exhibited 7% of WT activity in the BAL assay but, in the most intriguing result, this variant was able to catalyze the decarboxylation of benzoylformate. Conversely, the BFD S26A variant was unable to cleave benzoin.  (+info)

Chiral separation of norlaudanosoline, laudanosoline, laudanosine, chlorthalidone, and three benzoin derivatives using amino acid based molecular micelles. (6/26)

In this study, 18 polymeric single amino acid and dipeptide surfactants are examined, and their performances, in terms of enantioselectivity, are compared for norlaudanosoline, laudanosoline, laudanosine, chlorthalidone, benzoin, benzoin methyl, and benzoin ethyl enantiomers. Several aspects of amino acid-based polymeric surfactants including comparison of single amino acid versus dipeptide, amino acid order, steric effect, and effect of the position of the chiral center of dipeptide surfactants on the chiral selectivity of these optically active compounds are discussed.  (+info)

Analysis of the inhibition of mammalian carboxylesterases by novel fluorobenzoins and fluorobenzils. (7/26)

We have synthesized and assessed the ability of symmetrical fluorobenzoins and fluorobenzils to inhibit mammalian carboxylesterases (CE). The majority of the latter were excellent inhibitors of CEs however unexpectedly, the fluorobenzoins were very good enzyme inhibitors. Positive correlations were seen with the charge on the hydroxyl carbon atom, the carbonyl oxygen, and the Hammett constants for the derived K(i) values with the fluorobenzoins.  (+info)

Alumina and silica oxides as catalysts for the oxidation of benzoins to benzils under solvent-free conditions. (8/26)

Alumina or silica gel are used as catalysts for a solvent-free oxidation of benzoins to the corresponding benzils. These catalysts are easily recovered after completion of the reactions, which are carried out either by heating in a sand bath or using microwave irradiation. Comparison of the results obtained with both catalysts indicates that all the reactants examined were oxidized faster on alumina than on silica under these conditions.  (+info)

The benzoin condensation is a reaction (often called a condensation reaction, for historical reasons) between two aromatic aldehydes, particularly benzaldehyde. The reaction is catalyzed by a nucleophile such as the cyanide anion or an N-heterocyclic carbene. The reaction product is an aromatic acyloin with benzoin as the parent compound. An early version of the reaction was developed in 1832 by Justus von Liebig and Friedrich Woehler during their research on bitter almond oil. The catalytic version of the reaction was developed by Nikolay Zinin in the late 1830s, and the reaction mechanism for this organic reaction was proposed in 1903 by A. J. Lapworth. In the first step in this reaction, the cyanide anion (as sodium cyanide) reacts with the aldehyde in a nucleophilic addition. Rearrangement of the intermediate results in polarity reversal of the carbonyl group, which then adds to the second carbonyl group in a second nucleophilic addition. Proton transfer and elimination of the cyanide ion ...

Papier dArménie, a type of incense produced in France, is a room deodorizing product sold as booklets of twelve sheets of paper each cut into three pieces, which are coated with benzoin resin, the dried sap of styrax trees. At the end of the 19th century, Auguste Ponsot discovered that Armenian households would burn Styrax as a fragrance and disinfectant. M. Ponsot adopted this habit with the help of the pharmacist Henri Rivier, and the recipe created, whereby benzoin resin was dissolved in alcohol, then infused onto a blotting paper support. The "alchemy" inherent in Papier dArménie became a huge success with the emerging importance of hygiene from 1888-1889, and has been steadily produced in Montrouge, France since 1885. In 2006, during the Year of Armenia in France (Année de lArménie en France), the celebrated French perfumer of Armenian origin Francis Kurkdjian gave his own recreation of the historical recipe. Typically, a strip of Papier dArménie is torn from the booklet, folded ...

The results showed an oscillatory behavior between er and reaction time, resulting in enantioselectivity changes according to pH conditions within 1 week. In the course of 1 day, we observed an increase of er in all pH treatments, but by the second day the opposite was observed with the exception of the treatment at pH 6.5 and 8.0. By the third day, a decrease in er was observed at pH 6.5, whereas a continuous increase was observed at pH 8.0. These results exhibited no periodic dependence between er and reaction time. Both enantiomers were identified as the main product in the enantiomeric mixture. At pH values of 4.0 and 6.0, the oscillatory behavior was also present, but the opposite enantioselectivity was observed during the reaction course because the (R)-enantiomer was mainly obtained. Enantioselective changes were previously reported when racemic benzoin was deracemized by Rhizopus oryzae at pH 7.5-8.0 and pH 4.0-5.0 [29].. The present results suggest that Taxus globosa Schltdl. cells are ...

Dressings. These may be either dry or wet.. Dry dressings consist of gauze and bandage or of cotton and collodion (the cocoon dressing.). The most convenient form in which sterile gauze can be obtained is in small squares in individual envelopes. Large packages are contaminated with the first opening and are inconvenient.. The cocoon dressing is occlusive and should never be applied over an infected area. It is applicable to sensitive areas for protection, and to operated areas not liable to infection.. Protective varnishes, such as collodion, compound tincture of benzoin, or pure ichthyol, are useful where little protection is indicated.. Wet dressings. Two distinct therapeutic actions may be derived from the wet compress, depending upon whether or not an impervious covering is employed. These actions are antiphlogistic and hyperemic, and these in turn may be either antiseptic or astringent. The wet dressing, without a covering, is cleansing and heat reducing, because of evaporation. 4. The manipulation is carried out in the cast room, with the baby having been fed just prior to the treatment or even during the treatment. After the foot is manipulated, a long leg cast is applied to hold the correction. Initially, the short leg component is applied. The cast should be snug with minimal but adequate padding. The authors paint or spray the limb with tincture of benzoin to allow adherence of the padding to the limb. The authors prefer to apply additional padding strips along the medial and lateral borders to facilitate safe removal of the cast with a cast saw. The cast must incorporate the toes right up to the tips but not squeeze the toes or obliterate the transverse arch. The cast is molded to contour around the heel while abducting the forefoot against counter pressure on the lateral aspect of the head of the talus. The knee is flexed to 90° for the long leg component of the cast. The parents can soak these casts for 30-45 minutes prior to removal with a plaster knife. The ...

Here are some more natural herbal remedies for Arthritis so that they understand how to get rid of Arthritis. A few drops of rosemary added to a stroke oil (sunflower will do) in the palm of the hand and rubbed for a painful area may bicep temporary relief. Other oils to try are benzoin, camomile, cypress, sage, juniper, lemon or thyme. Wintergreen or arnica ointments may also help. Avoid rosemary if you have blood pressure. In spring and summer, gather daisies into bunches and bind the stems associated with string. Hang them upside within a dry place, away from direct sunlight. When they are expanded dry, break off the heads into a dry clean container so because of this discard the stems. To make a daisy tea, pour a cup of boiling water over chip teaspoonful of dried daisy prospective customers or three teaspoonfuls at the rear of fresh daisy heads and so steep for ten nights. Drink the daisy tea or coffee four times daily for relief from Arthritis, rheumatism, summer coughs, to soothe ...

Rich Schick The practice of injecting Benzoin into blisters was a common practice in the Army for some years. It resulted most times in some relief after the initial pain subsided but in some cases it resulted in severe inflammation and prolonged disability. The practice was banned under threat of legal action for anyone caught practicing it. My own favorite technique is to snip a small hole in the blister with a pair of scissors. This creates a fish mouth shaped opening that does not seal shut as easily. Another very effective treatment if you have access to suture supplies (easily obtained through veternary supply catalogs and stores) is to pass a single strand of suture through the blister, tie a knot on both ends to keep it from pulling out, and snip off the excess. This technique has the advantages of being relatively sterile and not allowing air to get to the interior of the blister which makes it less painful. The suture acts as a wick. It will sometimes quit draining in which case you ...

Eighty‐seven proteolytic psychrotrophic micro‐organisms were isolated from 11 bulk milk supplies of two Queensland factories from different climatic regions, before and after storage at 4°C for 7 d. These isolates together with 15 reference strains formed the basis of a numerical taxonomic study involving 81 attributes. All but six isolates were pseudomonads. The strains clustered into nine groups, of which one group consisted of four yeasts. One group, containing 39 isolates, was designated as Pseudomonas fluorescens biovar 1; three groups, containing 27 isolates, as Ps. fluorescens biovar 5; and one group, containing 10 isolates, as Ps. putida biovar A. This study showed that the proteolytic psychrotrophic microflora of the 11 milks supplying the two factories was substantially different and that the proteolytic flora of 7 d refrigerated milk could not be estimated by examining the flora before storage. This gene is a member of the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related gene clusters tandemly linked on chromosome five that demonstrate an unusual genomic organization similar to that of B-cell and T-cell receptor gene clusters. The alpha gene cluster is composed of 15 cadherin superfamily genes related to the mouse CNR genes and consists of 13 highly similar and 2 more distantly related coding sequences. The tandem array of 15 N-terminal exons, or variable exons, are followed by downstream C-terminal exons, or constant exons, which are shared by all genes in the cluster. The large, uninterrupted N-terminal exons each encode six cadherin ectodomains while the C-terminal exons encode the cytoplasmic domain. These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins are integral plasma membrane proteins that most likely play a critical role in the establishment and function of specific cell-cell connections in the brain. Alternative splicing has been observed and additional variants have been ...
Alpha-C, D and bac are production rates of the corresponding targets, which are assumed to be given constants. Gamma-LuxR, gamma-ccdB, gamma-AHL and gamma-bac are decay rates of the corresponding targets. For an activator AHL/LuxR complex, Hill function is an S-shaped curve which can be described in the form x^n / (K +x^n). K is the activation coefficient and n determines the steepness of the input function (Alon, 2007). The k2 is the production rate of AHL that synthesized by the LuxI protein. For an inhibition of bacterial population, Hill function can be described in the form 1 / (1 +x^n). Because many of the in vivo rates of the biochemical reactions we simulated are unknown, the values of the kinetic parameters used in the simulation were initially obtained from the literature and educated guesses. From the gene network design procedure, initial values and numerical configurations were given, which lead to several rounds of simulation and results. (Fig.2 ...

The reaction may include, for example, polymerization via curing. Curing may be carried out in an oxygen-free, e.g., in an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen gas or by utilizing a barrier of radiation-transparent material having low oxygen permeability. Curing can also be carried out under an inerting fluid such as water. When visible or ultraviolet radiation is used for curing, the reaction may also contain a photoinitiator. Suitable photoinitiators include benzoin ethers, benzophenone and derivatives thereof, acetophenone derivatives, camphorquinone, and the like. Some examples of commercially available photoinititaors include DARACUR 1173, DAROCUR 4265, IRGACURE 651, IRGACURE 1800, IRGACURE 369, IRGACURE 1700, and IRGACURE 907, ...

Veratraldehyde is an important chemical used in perfumery, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Current processes of manufacture of veratraldehyde use homogeneous catalysts, which make them highly polluting, creating problems of disposal of effluents and product purity. In the current work, veratraldehyde was synthesized from O-alkylation of vanillin with an environmentally benign reagent, dimethyl carbonate. A series of potassium loaded La2O3-MgO were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method, and their performance was evaluated vis-à-vis MgO, La2O3, La2O3-MgO, and a series of 1-4 wt % K/La2O3-MgO. All catalysts were characterized by different techniques, such as N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, TGA-DSC, FT-IR, CO2-TPD, and SEM techniques. The effect of different loadings (1-4 wt %) of potassium on La2O3-MgO was studied, among which 2 wt % K/La2O3-MgO showed the best activity and selectivity due to high dispersion of potassium and high basicity in comparison with the rest. ...

Fruit ripening and senescence are active processes initiated by internal and environmental factors. Considerable evidence suggests that cellular energy supply is a key factor controlling ripening and senescence events, and that aging and browning of postharvest horticultural crops may be related to inadequate supplies and reduced efficiency of cellular energy generation [1-3]. A salient feature initiating the aging process is a decline in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels. For instance, increased membrane permeability and enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by harvested fruit are related to low ATP and energy charge (EC) levels [4, 5]. Preharvest application of boron (B) and calcium (Ca) [6], and postharvest treatments, including ethylene inhibitors [7], high oxygen [4], anaerobic conditions [8], controlled atmosphere (CA) storage [2, 3, 5, 9], an exogenous carbon source [1] and ATP [10, 11], can maintain tissue levels of ATP and EC, thereby delaying pericarp browning of litchi ...

Daidzein and genistein are two major components of soy isoflavones. They exist abundantly in plants and possess multiple bioactivities. In contrast, ortho-hydroxydaidzein (OHD) and ortho-hydroxygenistein (OHG), including 6-hydroxydaidzein (6-OHD), 8-hydroxydaidzein (8-OHD), 3-hydroxydaidzein (3-OHD), 6-hydroxygenistein (6-OHG), 8-hydroxygenistein (8-OHG), and 3-hydroxygenistein (3-OHG), are rarely found in plants. Instead, they are usually isolated from fermented soybean foods or microbial fermentation broth feeding with soybean meal. Accordingly, the bioactivity of OHD and OHG has been investigated less compared to that of soy isoflavones. Recently, OHD and OHG were produced by genetically engineering microorganisms through gene cloning of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme systems. This success opens up bioactivity investigation and industrial applications of OHD and OHG in the future. This article reviews isolation of OHD and OHG from non-synthetic sources and production of the compounds by

The HR Del nova remnant was observed with the IFU-GMOS at Gemini North. The spatially resolved spectral data cube was used in the kinematic, morphological, and abundance analysis of the ejecta. The line maps show a very clumpy shell with two main symmetric structures. The first one is the outer part of the shell seen in Hα, which forms two rings projected in the sky plane. These ring structures correspond to a closed hourglass shape, first proposed by Harman & OBrien. The equatorial emission enhancement is caused by the superimposed hourglass structures in the line of sight. The second structure seen only in the [O III] and [N II] maps is located along the polar directions inside the hourglass structure. Abundance gradients between the polar caps and equatorial region were not found. However, the outer part of the shell seems to be less abundant in oxygen and nitrogen than the inner regions. Detailed 2.5-dimensional photoionization modeling of the three-dimensional shell was performed using the

Results. The number of CAG repeats in patients did not differ from that of controls (22.1 ± 2.9 vs 21.9 ± 2.9, respectively; p = 0.26), but the presence of articular erosions was associated with a lower number of repeats in the shorter allele of patients with RA (20.4 ± 2.2 vs 21.2 ± 2.4; p = 0.031). When alleles with , 22 CAG were classified as short (S) and those with ≥ 22 CAG as long (L), the age at diagnosis of RA was lower in women with S-S genotype in comparison to combined S-L + L-L genotypes (43.0 ± 14.6 yrs vs 47.6 ± 12.5 yrs; p = 0.021). In patients with the L-L genotype, the frequency of erosive disease (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.25-0.80, p = 0.0085) and extraarticular manifestations (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.26-0.98, p = 0.047) was lower in comparison to carriers of the S allele. In multivariate analysis, the L-L genotype was an independent factor associated with a lower risk of erosions (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.22-0.90, p = 0.024). ...

Introduction Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a subtropical/tropical fruit of high commercial value with a white, transulent aril and appealing red pericarp color. The major limitation in litchi marketing is the rapid loss of this red color after harvest, along with pericarp browning (Zhang et al., 2005). Post-harvest browning of litchi fruit has been attributed mainly to the degradation of red pigments in association with phenolic oxidation by polyphenoloxidase (PPO) and/or peroxidase (PO) enzymes (Jiang et al., 2004). Polyphenoloxidase (Liu et al., 2007) is a widely distributed copper-containing enzyme that catalyzes the hydroxylation of monophenols to o-diphenols (EC 1.14.18.1, cresolase or monophenol monooxygenase) and the oxidation of o-diphenol to o-quinones (EC 1.10.3.2, diphenolase or catecholase) and PO (EC 1.11.1.7) Li and Yan (1963) first detected the relationship between PPO activity and litchi peel browning. Significant progress in purification and characterization of PO and PPO ...
Recently, hard X-ray high kinetic energy photoelectron spectroscopy has lead to a break-through due to its non destructive way of investigating the bulk electronic properties of materials. However, due to the relatively new development of this technique there is a lack of information concerning the photoionization cross sections at high energies. Whenever compound materials are investigated or when estimating signal levels and the feasibility of an electron spectroscopy experiment the knowledge of cross sections is essential. In the present work the experimentally determined relative sub-shell photoionization cross sections of shallow levels of nickel metal in the energy range of 2-9 keV will be shown. The data are compared with calculated sub-shell photoionization cross sections.. ...
Basic substituted benzilic esters with distinctive anticholinergic effects are potential drugs for the treatment of urinary incontinence, duodenal and gastric ulcers and Parkinson disease. Derivatives of benzilic esters, exhibiting a combination of anticholinergic and dopaminergic effects, are of special interest because, as a consequence of their dualistic effect, they are in a position to form a new class of Antiparkinson drugs. As muscarinic receptor subtypes possess a large variety of functional properties, drugs which show less selectivity on muscarinic receptors exhibit atropine-like side effects. A reduction of these side effects may be achieved by the development of more selective anticholinergic compounds. The objective was to optimise the effect of N-Methyl-4-piperidyl benzilates through a variation of sterical parameters and the introduction of electronically differentiated substituents within the aromatic rings. The effect of sterical and structural variations was investigated in ...
An ultra-thin hybrid film of amphiphilic iridium(III) complexes and synthetic saponite was manipulated by means of the modified Langmuir-Blodgett method. In the film deposited onto a quartz substrate, the external mixed molecular layer of amphiphilic iridium(III) complexes was reinforced by the inner layer of exfoliated synthetic saponite. As components of the molecular layer, two iridium(III) complexes were used: [Ir(dfppy)2(dc9bpy)]+ (dfppyH = 2-(4′,6′-difluorophenyl) pyridine; dc9bpy = 4,4′-dinonyl-2,2′-bipyridine) (denoted as DFPPY) and [Ir(piq)2(dc9bpy)]+ (piqH = 1-phenyisoquinoline)) denoted as PIQ). The emission spectra from the films changed from blue to red maxima with the decrease of a ratio of DFPPY/PIQ due to the energy transfer from excited DFPPY to PIQ. The intensity of red decreased with the increase of oxygen pressure through the quenching of excited iridium(III) complexes, promising a possibility as an oxygen-sensing film.

After Stalins stroke, Beria claimed to have killed him. This aborted a final purge of Old Bolsheviks Anastas Mikoyan and Vyacheslav Molotov for which Stalin had been laying the groundwork in the year prior to his death. Shortly after Stalins death, he announced triumphantly to the Politburo that he had "done [Stalin] in" and "saved [us] all", according to Molotovs memoirs. Notably, Beria never explicitly stated whether he had initiated Stalins stroke or had merely delayed his treatment in the hope he would die (as argued by Sebag-Montefiore and consistent with evidence).[22] Support for the assertion that Stalin was poisoned by Berias associates has been presented from several sources, including Edvard Radzinsky in his biography Stalin and a recent study by Miguel A. Faria in the journal Surgical Neurology International. Warfarin (4-Hydroxycoumarins) is cited as the likely agent; it would have produced the symptoms reported, and administering it into Stalins food or drink was well within ...

Gold nanoparticles with sizes around 2 nm and below are being studied extensively because they exhibit novel electronic, magnetic, optical and catalytic properties. We are investigating the formation of Au-55 types of gold nanoparticles through a reduction reaction at a liquid-liquid interface. Diffuse X-ray scattering and reflectivity techniques [1] allow us to monitor the formation of gold nanoparticles at liquid-liquid interface. These techniques also provide information regarding the out-of-plane and in-plane structure of the gold nanoparticles at liquid surface and liquid-liquid interface.. In situ X-ray scattering measurements were carried out at beamline ID10B during the formation of gold nanoparticles at a toluene-water interface. The reduction reaction [2] uses an organic precursor of gold kept in the toluene layer and a reducing agent kept in the slightly alkaline water layer. As the reaction occurs through the creation of fingers from one liquid to another, the size (1 nm diameter) of ...

This review highlights recent reports, between 2000 and early 2002, of new methodologies for the asymmetric reduction of ketones, leading to the formation of alcohols, Since ketone reduction is a pivotal reaction in organic chemistry, and since its enantioselective variant constitutes an increasing fraction of this widely reported reaction, we have been highly selective in the choice of material. Emphasis will be placed on the application of asymmetric reduction of ketones to drug synthesis, on unusually novel applications and on new classes of reagents for these applications, the majority of which involve catalytic processes. The rapid rise of asymmetric transfer hydrogenation to prominence in recent years will be reflected by a high level of coverage in this review, while other more established methods (oxazaborolidines, hydrogenation) will also be featured.. ...
The modeling of the laser-induced damage processes can be divided into thermal and electronic processes. Especially, electronic damage seems to be well understood. In corresponding models, the damage threshold is linked to the excitation of valence electrons into the conduction band, and often the damage is obtained if a critical density of free electrons is exceeded. For the modeling of the electronic excitation, rate equation models are applied which can vary in the different terms representing different excitation channels. According to the current state of the art, photoionization and avalanche ionization contribute the major part to the ionization process, and consequently the determination of laser-induced damage thresholds is based on the calculation of the respective terms. For the theoretical description of both, well established models are available. For the quantitative calculation of the photoionization, the Keldysh theory is used most frequently, and for the avalanche processes the ...
