An order of fish in the group SMEGMAMORPHA, comprising adrianichthyids, medakas (ORYZIAS), needlefishes, halfbeaks, and flying fishes.
Class of parasitic flukes consisting of three subclasses, Monogenea, Aspidogastrea, and Digenea. The digenetic trematodes are the only ones found in man. They are endoparasites and require two hosts to complete their life cycle.
Infections caused by infestation with worms of the class Trematoda.
Encysted cercaria which house the intermediate stages of trematode parasites in tissues of an intermediate host.
Maintenance of the hygienic state of the skin under optimal conditions of cleanliness and comfort. Effective in skin care are proper washing, bathing, cleansing, and the use of soaps, detergents, oils, etc. In various disease states, therapeutic and protective solutions and ointments are useful. The care of the skin is particularly important in various occupations, in exposure to sunlight, in neonates, and in PRESSURE ULCER.
The relationship between an invertebrate and another organism (the host), one of which lives at the expense of the other. Traditionally excluded from definition of parasites are pathogenic BACTERIA; FUNGI; VIRUSES; and PLANTS; though they may live parasitically.
City, urban, rural, or suburban areas which are characterized by severe economic deprivation and by accompanying physical and social decay.
An infraclass of MAMMALS, also called Metatheria, where the young are born at an early stage of development and continue to develop in a pouch (marsupium). In contrast to Eutheria (placentals), marsupials have an incomplete PLACENTA.
A generic concept reflecting concern with the modification and enhancement of life attributes, e.g., physical, political, moral and social environment; the overall condition of a human life.
The branch of science concerned with the interrelationship of organisms and their ENVIRONMENT, especially as manifested by natural cycles and rhythms, community development and structure, interactions between different kinds of organisms, geographic distributions, and population alterations. (Webster's, 3d ed)
The state that distinguishes organisms from inorganic matter, manifested by growth, metabolism, reproduction, and adaptation. It includes the course of existence, the sum of experiences, the mode of existing, or the fact of being. Over the centuries inquiries into the nature of life have crossed the boundaries from philosophy to biology, forensic medicine, anthropology, etc., in creative as well as scientific literature. (Random House Unabridged Dictionary, 2d ed; Dr. James H. Cassedy, NLM History of Medicine Division)
A former branch of knowledge embracing the study, description, and classification of natural objects (as animals, plants, and minerals) and thus including the modern sciences of zoology, botany, and mineralogy insofar as they existed at that time. In the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries it was much used for the generalized pursuit of certain areas of science. (Webster, 3d ed; from Dr. James H. Cassedy, NLM History of Medicine Division)
One of the BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE DISCIPLINES concerned with the origin, structure, development, growth, function, genetics, and reproduction of animals, plants, and microorganisms.
Those occurrences, including social, psychological, and environmental, which require an adjustment or effect a change in an individual's pattern of living.

First record of Huffmanela schouteni (Nematoda: Trichosomoididae), a histozoic parasite of flyingfishes, in Europe. (2/5)

Examination of 3 specimens of the Mediterranean flyingfish Cheilopogon heterurus (Rafinesque) from the Ligurian Sea, Italy, revealed the presence of numerous, dark-shelled trichinelloid eggs (69 to 75 x 30 to 33 microm) inside the innermost layer of the swimbladder, mostly located in clumps arranged in a distinct pattern. These were identified as Huffmanela schouteni Moravec et Campbell, 1991, a species known so far as eggs in flyingfishes and in the stools of humans in Curacao. This is the first finding of this parasite in Europe and C. heterurus represents a new host record.  (+info)

For the first time, we have performed a direct wind-tunnel experiment to investigate the aerodynamic properties of flying-fish flight and provided qualitative and quantitative data for the flying fish flight. Force measurements were performed for the real flying-fish models with different wing morphologies. The aerodynamic performance of flying fish is comparable to those of various bird wings, and the flying fish has some morphological characteristics in common with the aerodynamically designed modern aircrafts. The maximum lift coefficient of flying fish is measured at α=30-35 deg where the flying fish is observed to emerge from the sea. The lift-to-drag ratio is largest at α=-5∼0 deg, indicating that the best gliding performance can be achieved when the flying fish glides nearly parallel to the sea surface. As the lateral dihedral angle of the pectoral fins decreases, the lift coefficient slightly increases. In addition to the enlarged pectoral fins, the large pelvic fins have an ...
Were all familiar with birds that are as comfortable diving as they are flying but only one family of fish has made the reverse journey. Flying fish can remain airborne for over 40 s, covering distances of up to 400 m at speeds of 70 km h-1. Haecheon Choi, a mechanical engineer from Seoul National University, Korea, became fascinated by flying fish when reading a science book to his children. Realising that flying fish really do fly, he and his colleague, Hyungmin Park, decided to find out how these unexpected aeronauts stay aloft (p. 3269).. But getting hold of flying fish to test in a wind tunnel turned out to be easier said than done. After travelling to Japan to try to buy fish from the world famous Tsukiji fish market, the duo eventually struck up a collaboration with the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives of Korea. Park went fishing in the East Korean Sea, successfully landing 40 darkedged-wing flying fish. Selecting five similarly sized fish, Park took them to the Korean ...

Megyn Rugh said she understands why surfers at the beach dont want her to swab their noses for germs.. Its a lot of people trying to surf really quickly before work. … You dont really want to stop and talk to some random weirdo who wants to tell you about bacteria, she said. Im called the booger lady.. Still, the graduate student in civil and environmental engineering wakes up at 4 a.m. most days, drives to the beach and collects samples of bacteria from the water and from surfers noses. Rugh takes these samples back to the lab at UCLA, where she grows them on a petri dish and analyzes the bacterias DNA. She wants to determine if Californias beaches are exposing surfers to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.. Rugh said she thinks many surfers know there is a lot of bacteria in the ocean. Surfers have a higher incidence of diarrhea, vomiting and skin rashes, according to a study on surfers in San Diego.. Surfers ear is the common name for an exostosis or abnormal bone growth within the ear canal. Surfers ear is not the same as swimmers ear, although infection can result as a side effect. Irritation from cold wind and water exposure causes the bone surrounding the ear canal to develop lumps of new bony growth which constrict the ear canal. Where the ear canal is actually blocked by this condition, water and wax can become trapped and give rise to infection. The condition is so named due to its prevalence among cold water surfers. Warm water surfers are also at risk for exostosis due to the evaporative cooling caused by wind and the presence of water in the ear canal. Most avid surfers have at least some mild bone growths (exostoses), causing little to no problems. The condition is progressive, making it important to take preventative measures early, preferably whenever surfing. The condition is not limited to surfing and can occur in any activity with cold, wet, windy conditions such as ...

Although N. sphaerica is often considered as a pathogen, it can also act as an endophyte depending on its host. Various studies have identified novel metabolites isolated from N. sphaerica. Some of these metabolites act as phytotoxins, while others contain antiviral or antifungal properties. The purpose of the production of many of these metabolites by the fungus are not fully understood or still unknown and is an area that needs to be further studied.[11]. Aphidicolin is a mycotoxin originally known to be produced by the fungus, Cephalosporium aphidicola. This antiviral compound was isolated in mycelium culture filtrate of N. sphaerica.[11]. Epoxyexserophilone is a metabolite similar to the phytotoxin, exserohilone. Fermentation of N. sphaerica led to the production of epoxyexserophilone. Etiolated wheat coleoptile bioassay indicated that the compound is biologically inactive, and ineffective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.[17]. Nigrosporolide is a 14-membered lactone ...
Cape Town surfers - its been a while.. This is a post about angry surfers again. This time its Muizenberg thats in the spotlight.. Before I kick off lets all agree if youre surfing at Muizenberg youre either 1) learning to surf, or 2) you are playing the game of dodge the beginners. Its not an advanced wave. In fact Muizenberg is the defacto learn-to-surf break in South Africa and as such the assumption must be that people in the water are learning to surf. Quick reminder for those that have forgotten learning to surf is rad.. So if happen to be just past middle age, over weight, bald, SUPer and get angry at a beginner surfer - dont. Just dont.. Its never right to intimidate someone.. Its never right to shout at someone and force them out of the water with fear.. Its never right to thrust your paddle towards another persons face as a gesture, threat or accident ...

Gliding has evolved many times in animals (see review by Dudley et al. [33]). Within the vertebrates, it is principally associated with rainforest tetrapods (e.g. gliding frogs, lizards and mammals), which use this strategy as an energy-efficient means of travelling from tree to tree. However, gliding has evolved only twice among fishes: once in the Triassic Thoracopteridae, and again in the modern Exocoetidae. In contrast to tetrapod gliders, the gliding of flying fishes is energetically very expensive, and for this reason the hypothesis of gliding in flying fishes as part of an energy-saving strategy for long-distance migration [34] has been rejected [12]. An alternative hypothesis [12,15,16] that the exocoetid flying fishes glide to escape from predators (e.g. dolphin, dolphinfish, tuna and squid) is supported by the observation that flying fishes are a dominant food source in the stomach contents of dolphins [35]. It is unlikely that thoracopterids used gliding as part of an energy-saving ...

I used the cam (92% realism)to follow the torp, as the ocean rose and fell at times you could see the torp out of the water. As it closed it was heading right into the stern of the boat, and just as the boats

The morphology and host-specificity of the histophagous apostome ciliate Vampy- rophrya pelagica infecting pelagic copepods in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, were intensively investi- gated. Four stages were reconfirmed in the life cycle of the ciliate. A mature cell within the phoront bears cilia ready for quick excystation, and unique lamellar structures in the cytoplasm appear to be precursors of food vacuole membranes. These lamellar structures completely disappear in the fully grown trophont. The phoronts were attached to the ventral surface of the copepod prosome or legs, but were almost totally absent on the urosome. The number of phoronts per copepod was up to 43 for the adult female of Paracalanus parvus s.l. Phoront attachment was found irrespective of develop- mental stage and sex of P. parvus s.l., although the early copepodid stages were less frequently infected than the later stages, and the adult female was more intensively infected than the adult male. There was a marked seasonal change in
e Bay Surfrider Club co-president, Jessica Kendall-Bar, senior at Santa Monica High School, spent this past Wednesday morning of her spring break collecting and analyzing ocean samples for fecal indicator bacteria after heavy rains passed through Santa Monica starting late Tuesday night. After 24 hours of processing and incubating the samples in the Marine Biology classroom laboratory at Samohi, Jessica found alarming spikes in Enteroccocus bacteria at all three ocean sites: Santa Monica Pier, Pico-Kenter, and Lifeguard Station 26. Average values for these sites were 219, 5784, and 1114 colony forming units per 100 mL of sea water, respectively. All three sites exceeded the states maximum acceptable levels for Enterococcus colony forming units, which is 104. The Pico-Kenter site in front of the storm drain was the worst, over 50 times the acceptable limit. These data indicate highly polluted water and an increased risk to beachgoers.. Right now, Surfrider has 56% of our coasts protected. We have a vision to protect 100% of the U.S. coastlines over the next five years.. What does 100% coverage look like? It means that each mile of coastline - every beach and every wave - is protected. We will have a chapter of local volunteers, alongside experts in science, policy, legal issues and organizing to look after our ocean, waves and beaches across the country.. Nobody knows his or her stretch of coastline better than someone who calls it home. Local beachgoers, surfers and fisherman pay very close attention to the rhythms of the sand, the types of marine life, and are often the first to know when something isnt right. Over the years, these keen observations lead to a love for the coast and a vested interest in protecting it today and preserving it for tomorrow. Throughout our 31 years, weve found that if we support these passionate people with leading science, policy, program and legal experts, its a winning combination for our ...

Researchers from the University of Exeter Medical School compared samples of fecal matter from 143 frequent surfers or bodyboarders (at least 3x per month) to 130 volunteers who had low exposure to seawater (no more than once per month). Their microbiological analysis, published in Environment International, showed that 9 percent of surfers were carrying E. coli ST131, a strain that cannot be eliminated by the common antibiotic drug cefotaxime. In comparison, only 3 percent of non-surfers tested positive for this species. We looked for a particular type of E. coli (E. coli ST131) that is highly virulent and resistant and is spreading worldwide, lead author Dr Anne Leonard told IFLScience. It typically causes extra-intestinal (i.e. not gastrointestinal) infections such as urinary tract infections.. People taking part in the study who were carrying these bacteria were probably asymptomatic, and therefore they will not need treatment to get rid of these bacteria, Dr Leonard continued. ...

Standup surfing begins when the surfer paddles toward shore in an attempt to match the speed of the wave (The same applies whether the surfer is standup paddling, bodysurfing, boogie-boarding or using some other type of watercraft, such as a waveski or kayak.). Once the wave begins to carry the surfer forward, the surfer stands up and proceeds to ride the wave. The basic idea is to position the surfboard so it is just ahead of the breaking part (whitewash) of the wave. A common problem for beginners is being able to catch the wave at all. Surfers skills are tested by their ability to control their board in difficult conditions, riding challenging waves, and executing maneuvers such as strong turns and cutbacks (turning board back to the breaking wave) and carving (a series of strong back-to-back maneuvers). More advanced skills include the floater (riding on top of the breaking curl of the wave), and off the lip (banking off the breaking wave). A newer addition to surfing is the progression of ...

Imagine travelling down the face of a 30 foot wave at 50 mph. With the force of an avalanche, a big wave surfer can be pushed 50 feet below the surface. Busted eardrums only confound the struggle to figure out which way is up.. According to the wave they have announced that they will be running a licence to ride scheme by which surfers who wish to surf the expert setting will have to sign up to an assessment day were they will be assessed on their surfing and then the setting gradually notched up to the real deal to see if their surfing is on the level. If the surfer passes the assessment based on their surfing, they will be awarded a pass that allows them to book online in the future into the expert sessions. ...

Its hard to find an actual risk estimate of being bitten by a shark, since statistics only note how many shark attacks take place per year, not per number of visits to the beach. It is, after all, safe to say that unless one goes to the beach, or at least to a large aquarium that houses sharks, ones odds of suffering a shark bite are zero. Just to get a ballpark figure, Ill figure that youre most likely to be bitten by a shark if youre a surfer. According to Liquid Evolution, there are 2.6 million surfers in the United States. If we say that all 20 (rounded up) shark attacks in the US annually have surfers as their victims, the odds that any given surfer will be bitten by a shark in any given year are 1/130,000 ...

Duke Kahanamoku. One of the most influential surfers of all-time is no other than Duke Kahanamoku. Duke was born in Honolulu Hawaii and is responsible for spreading a view of surfing that has since soaked into masses and stuck fast. The full-blooded Hawaiian broke American Records at the age of 20, which included short-distance swimming record for the 50 yard sprint and 100 yard world record by almost five seconds. Think that was impressive? Well, the next year the Duke set yet another astonishing record at the Olympics in Stockholm. He won the gold medal in both the 100 and 400-meter freestyle relay. Duke Kahanamoku died of a heart attack at the age of 77, after a lifetime of piling the building blocks that would become modern surfing. He was named Surfer of the Century in 1999, and the U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp honoring him in 2002.. Miki Dora. Miki Dora was the undisputed king of Malibu in the 1950s and early 60s. Perhaps this accounts for why the film failed at the box office.Shebib, certainly, blamed Famous Players for sacrificing it on the alter of the art film at the Imperial 6 Cinemas on Yonge Street in Toronto. But if mainstream American cinema buried Between Friends, there is a delicious irony in the scene where Toby visits Malibu one last time before heading north to Canada-a place far away as he explains to his son on the telephone. Shot in British Columbia, the scene is obviously too rocky for southern California, and there is a dull, grey overcast to the images that is more characteristic of the Canadian west coast. When a young surfer with long golden hair-an archetypal embodiment of the dream that has captured Chino-recognizes Toby, they talk, and when the surfer leaves to catch some waves, he says to Toby, See you around, eh? revealing, whether intentionally or not, the scenes true national identity.Elsewhere the film includes some overt Canadian references (Casa Loma, Toronto Dominion ...
