INTRODUCTION: We previously found that some beekeepers continue beekeeping even after experiencing systemic allergic reactions. The present study was performed to collect data on the experience of beekeepers who underwent desensitization and continued beekeeping. The results are important for future counseling in this group of patients, and they show the effectiveness of desensitization under real conditions. METHODS: With the help of German and American beekeeping journals, we asked beekeepers who had undergone desensitization to participate. Data were obtained using a newly developed questionnaire and supplemented by reports obtained from the physicians who treated the allergy. RESULTS: We sent a questionnaire to each of the 73 beekeepers who responded to our call, and 63 (86.3%) questionnaires were returned. The vast majority of participants were hobby beekeepers who developed signs of allergy after a median of 2 years' beekeeping (mean, 4.27 years) and a median of 15 stings (mean, 51 stings). Additional allergies were reported by 35 beekeepers. Forty-three beekeepers were evaluated to determine the effectiveness of desensitization. The average number of bee stings after desensitization was 107 (median 18). All but one reported no longer having allergic responses; however, in the case of those that did, the severity of the allergic symptoms improved significantly. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this study is the first to provide data on the experience of beekeepers who continue their activity after desensitization. Our results show that desensitization can result in a complete absence of symptoms after re-exposure to bee stings.  (+info)

Our local club President, Danny Cannon, delivered one of the best lectures Ive ever sat through at a MSBA meeting a few years ago. Also known as the Vampire Mite, Varroa Mite, Varroa Destructor and often mislabeled as Varroa Jacobsoni.. The Varroa Mite is a parasitic mite that can cause serious trouble to beekeepers and their bees alike. This tick-like mite, around the sized of a pinhead, does its damage by feeding on the bees hemolymph fluid (akin to bee blood). Mites attach themselves to foraging workers in order to spread themselves from one hive to another. This mite can severally weaken a hive through vampire-like action and through the spread of disease and bacteria. An unchecked mite population will almost certainly lead to the premature death of a honeybee colony.. Within the United States, Varroa Mites have the largest impact when compared to other pests within the beekeeping industry. The Varroa Mite is also nearly completely responsible for the decimation and loss of feral honeybee colonies. Some beekeepers have resorted to reverting to small cell beekeeping and many hobbyist are moving towards top bar hives in ...
Interestingly, our industries are strikingly similar in many ways. In New Zealand they do not have issues with Chinese honey imports, but they do battle honey imports from elsewhere on the globe. They have problems with companies claiming to sell one type of honey when the product is something else entirely. Sounds familiar right? There seems especially to be a problem with companies all over the world claiming to sell Manuka honey with a high Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) level, yet it contains very little Manuka honey or very low levels of UMF. Like us, they struggle on a regular basis with Varroa mites, Nosema Ceranae, politics in beekeeping and a plethora of other issues. However, like the American beekeeping industry, they are resilient, passionate and excited about their careers despite the challenges they face. At times, the challenges are brutal and seem insurmountable. But, for every issue that arises, a solution has always been discovered, and a handful of scientists and beekeepers always ...

Early forms of honey collecting entailed the destruction of the entire colony when the honey was harvested. The wild hive was crudely broken into, using smoke to suppress the bees, the honeycombs were torn out and smashed up - along with the eggs, larvae and honey they contained. The liquid honey from the destroyed brood nest was strained through a sieve or basket. This was destructive and unhygienic, but for hunter-gatherer societies this did not matter, since the honey was generally consumed immediately and there were always more wild colonies to exploit. But in settled societies the destruction of the bee colony meant the loss of a valuable resource; this drawback made beekeeping both inefficient and something of a stop and start activity. There could be no continuity of production and no possibility of selective breeding, since each bee colony was destroyed at harvest time, along with its precious queen. During the medieval period abbeys and monasteries were centers of beekeeping, since ...
Beekeeping, or apiculture, is the cultivation of colonies of honeybees. Commercial beekeeping includes the production of honey and beeswax, the breeding of bees for sale, and the rental of bees for pollenating crops. Beekeeping in most of the world means cultivating the western honeybee, Apis mellifera. The infamous killer bee, a relative of the African honeybee, is too aggressive for commercial beekeeping. Modern beekeeping is based on the ancient Greek technique of creating a bee space. In those days, the hive consisted of a basket of containing a series of parallel wooden bars separated by a distance equal to that between the honeycombs when they are naturally built by bees. The distance is 6.350 millimeters, or about one quarter of an inch. Any variation from this distance results in the space being filled with comb or propolis. A honeycomb is a mass of hexagonal cells in the nest that contain eggs, young bees, and honey. Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth in 1851 brought beekeeping to the United ...

Subject to the recommended dosages and precautions, Timol has no contraindications in beekeeping. It is not recommended to give the drug if the bee family is too weak or in the hive there are less than 3-4 streets.. For humans, getting Timol on the skin or mucous membranes is fraught with irritation. If the drug enters in large quantities into the blood, then heart paralysis and even death are possible.. It is unacceptable to combine Timol with camphor or menthol. The simultaneous use of Salol is also prohibited.. For bees, the drug is harmless if given in recommended doses. Thymol does not pose a risk to brood, does not affect the taste and quality of beekeeping products (honey, propolis , beef , etc.). ...
By Ian Lane. With the growth of the urban farming movement and the increase in media coverage of pollinator decline, it is not surprising that urban beekeeping is on the rise across the United States. Cities such as New York, Minneapolis, and San Francisco are easing restrictions on beekeeping and there are similar movements underway in Los Angeles and other cities.. As urban centers continue to grow, along with their associated suburbs, natural areas that provide the flowering resources bees require for good nutrition and honey production are being eliminated from the landscape. Green areas, residential gardens, and weedy lots within urban landscapes provide flowering resources for managed and native bees, but the quality and quantity of these habitats can be marginal. Residential and park gardens may be planted with ornamental flower varieties that have little value as nectar and pollen resources. Most notably, the main feature of urban landscapes is the vast lawn monoculture, comprised of ...

I found the above observation to be worth some thought. In my own career, Ive evolved from being a hobby beekeeper to an (albeit small) commercial migratory beekeeper. During that time Ive also witnessed some major evolution in the honey bee and in beekeeping practices.. Back in my early days as a beekeeper, bees were essentially semi-domesticated wild animals for which the beekeeper merely provided wooden nest boxes; it was generally up to the bees to take care of themselves, foraging in the wild for whatever they could find. At best, the beekeeper would feed a bit of syrup in spring or fall, and perhaps hand load the hives for a move to better pasture. There was a robust population of locally-adapted feral bees, often genetically distinct from the managed populations.. In cold winter areas, colonies were typically cyanided in fall, and all the honey harvested; the beekeeper took the winter off, and restarted with package bees in the spring. Honey production was the only reason to keep bees ...

Well the heading says it all, I set up a small hive, a nuc, with 4 frames of filled comb, maybe a pound of bees and a new queen about three weeks ago in a friends yard. The hive started well, was growing fast but then the Small Hive Beetles moved in. I wasnt around to keep track of what was going on and the little [email protected] wiped out the hive. I just cleaned up the mess, had to toss three frames that were loaded with small hive beetle grubs, wash down the bottom board with soapy water and ended
This section of the beekeeping wikibook exists as a place to quickly answer some frequently (and perhaps some non frequently) asked questions. Answers will generally be brief and possibly point in the direction of a pre-existing module on the subject. Any items that go into particular depth and dont have a related module may eventually become a new module. Because of the ease and simplicity involved in answering (most) quick questions, there may, and likely will, exist information within this module that is not present in other modules.. Please keep in mind that most questions have a wide range of possibly correct answers. An old saying goes if you ask 100 beekeepers the same question you will get 101 different answers. Though some beepers may disagree with that statement, which does not change the fact that there will be different opinions as to the correct answer to a question. Because of this, hopefully more than one answer may be supplied for each question. If you choose to answer any ...

Wandering into the woods and staying lost for months is something I love to do. I have been an survivalist for 24 years, and have been keeping bees for more than 10 of those years. With these experiences under my belt, I have begun to teach people how to be a survivalist, and one subject I focus on is the art of beekeeping. Before I tell you the benefits of having bees and some cheap ways to keep them, I suggest that you find a book about beekeeping to help you understand the terms I use and show you more details on how to keep bees for the long haul. One of the best books I have read is The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture. Installing the bees. Congratulations, youve just purchased either a quality nucleus colony (nuc) or a shook swarm (package bees) with a newly-mated queen from selected stock!. Warning: A strong nuc is full of brood and ready to grow explosively! You may need to transfer your nuc into a larger hive within a day or so, or they may swarm. And unless they have at least half a frame of honey stored, they may starve if not given some sugar syrup.. Some nucs (and all packages) have the queen caged. If so, remove the candy cap when you get home to allow the bees to chew through the candy and release the queen. But do NOT remove the candy cap if the bees are tightly balled over the cage, indicating that they have not yet accepted the queen-wait another day until they are walking lightly over the cage.. Install the nuc in the center of a brood box with additional frames to fill the box. Keep the frames of the nuc in their original order. Be very careful not to crush the queen-a substantial percentage ...

Hobby beekeeping has become increasingly popular in California. Although generally docile, honey bees (Apis mellifera) can and may sting. As part of a hives reproductive process, a healthy hive may attempt to divide and swarm. Responsible management is, therefore, necessary to avoid creating problems for neighbors. This document is intended as a reference and standard for small scale urban and suburban honey bee management in the Mt. Diablo region. It may serve as a resource for information to reinforce community confidence in the safety of beekeeping activities; a standard reference for addressing complaints or conflicts about beekeeping activities in the region; and a collection of best management practices that MDBA members are encouraged to follow.. ...
Melissa Ewings, 31, hasnt been seen for eight days despite an extensive police search operation and mounting fears for her safety by concerned family members.. climate. This partially evidenced, by the fact that Lolita, like most other Latvian beekeepers, experiences less than 10% winter loss. This year she has only lost 2.5 % of her colonies!. I am told that the honey bee races most favored in Latvia are Buckfast, Carniolan, what they call Finnish Italians (owing to the fact that these particular Apis mellifera linguistica are imported from Finnland and are thus adapted to the Nordic climate). The German black bee also called European dark bee, Norwegian brown bee and Russian black bee, (Apis mellifera mellifera) was considered, 20 years ago, Latvias aboriginal bee. This race of bees is not currently popular in Latvia owing to its aggressiveness.. The amount of honey youre able to harvest is influenced by many factors, including your climate, the years weather patterns, the hives health and its access to forage. Remember, honey is bee food, so the colony should have first dibs on the supply before you take any for yourself. During particularly harsh winters, bees may use up the entire honey supply in order to survive, leaving you with nothing. Thats a gamble you must be willing to take if you want to go into the honey business. Regulations for selling honey as part of a home-based business vary from state to state. In some states, cottage-food laws dictate honey sales, while other states enact separate regulations. These laws may dictate how much honey you can sell in a given year, how it should be packaged, and where you are able to sell it. Learn more about honey-production laws in your state on Forrager.com.. In Florida, honey sales fall under cottage-food regulations. Urban beekeepers there can sell honey and honey products, such ...

How can you make your honey bees build comb, move up into the supers, store honey, raise brood? In other words, how can you make your bees do what you want them to do? The answer is you cant, at least not without consequences. And the consequences are usually not good.. Managing honey bees is not like teaching a dog to roll over or coaxing a dolphin to jump through a hoop. Honey bees have their own agenda and you, the beekeeper, are not part of it. They are not going to learn from you; you have to learn from them. That is why good beekeepers evolve instead of emerging fully formed from the beekeeping supply store.. For example, many people want to know how to force their bees to store honey in the supers. Well, there are ways to coerce that behavior, some of which Ive written about. But then, if the beekeeper says, Now I can harvest honey because they put it in the supers! he can easily end up starving his bees.. By forcing the bees to move into the supers prematurely, you may have prevented ...
Have your equipment and housing prepared. A note on feral honey bees / collecting swarms.. Some beekeepers build their colonies by collecting swarms. This is dangerous and should be attempted only by an experienced beekeeper. Bees collected this way may pose a serious risk of disease or pests to an established apiary. Best management practices require such bees to be kept isolated from established bee yards and carefully monitored before allowing colonies to mingle to reduce the risk of spreading diseases and pests within your own apiary or beyond, to other beekeepers in your community.. Greenman has tested alternatives to beeswax, but there are no vegan organic alternatives that work well, and are approved for cosmetics use by the EU cosmetics regulators. Greenman uses beeswax farmed by community beekeepers in Ethiopia, using traditional beekeeping methods. The beeswax is certified organic (Soil Association). We think that supporting organic, community beekeepers in a natural setting is good for bees and communities.. The lip balm also contains cocoa butter (to nourish the skin), jojoba (has oils similar to our skin to prevent dehydration), wheat germ (vitamin E and other skin nourishment), and Tea Tree Oil (antiseptic).. Ecofriendly. All the ingredients are organic and minimally processed. None are chemically processed. They are not tested on animals, instead selected by ...
Follow me on Instagram at sharpharmade! . Saturday August 20, 2016 is World Honey Bee Day. World Honey Bee Day, previously known as Honey Bee Awareness Day, is an idea put together by beekeepers in the USA, who petitioned the USDA in 2009 for an official day to honor honey bees and beekeeping. A few years down the line, people across the globe are holding a date of observation every year. Honey Bee awareness enthusiasts will likely put a bee in your bonnet and say this is not so much a day to celebrate honey bees, as it is to promote their involvement in sustainable farming. On this day, bee lovers everywhere decorate their gardens with lavender, borage and marjoram, the bees knees in pollinator lures. If you have the time and patience, bake some honey chippers and make your own honey fruit cobbler. And because youve been as busy as a bee all day, sit back and watch Hitchcocks The Bees. Youll count your blessings honey bees are nothing like South American killer bees. . ^sPm - ...
The demand for honey and other beehive products has necessitated different methods of hunting ranging from wild to modern beekeeping methods. The influence of two different nesting habitats on the gut enzyme activities and heavy metal content of honey-bee workers was investigated in this study. Worker bees of Apis mellifera L. were randomly collected from the wild and Kenya top bar hives were analysed for the presence of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Mn and Cu). Gut enzymes (cellulase, amylase, α-glucosidase, proteinase and lipase) assay was also determined in worker bees from the two habitats. Worker bees from the Kenya top bar hives recorded significantly higher heavy metals in their body than worker bees from the wild. Similarly, no Cd and Pb were detected in the body of worker bees from the wild. The gut enzymes assay of worker bees from Kenya top bar hives revealed the presence of cellulase, amylase, glucosidase, proteinase and lipase with a significantly higher enzymes activities (1.10, 1.65, 0.89, 0
While honey hunting for wild bees nests was probably common throughout the ancient world, the Egyptians were among the first to attempt keeping bees in artificial hives. Barges loaded with colonies of Apis mellifera lamarkii would travel up and down the Nile River, following the seasonal abundance of flora. As beekeeping methods spread, most ancient cultures are known to have kept the bees that were endemic to their regions. As Europeans explored and colonized other parts of the globe, they have transported and established the western honey bee on every continent except Antarctica. These bees adapted and thrived in many places while in others, they succumbed to parasites and diseases originally adapted to other bee host species. In the early 1600s, English colonists brought hives of Apis mellifera mellifera to the Jamestown settlement. These bees thrived in the old growth forests of the New World, and spread west in advance of the pioneers. These bees were said to be easily excitable, runny ...
With the nice weather that we have had, there have been bees helping themselves to the leftovers in the Langstroth hive. I have asked Best Bees to come and pick up the hive since I will not be using Langstroth hives. My goal is to focus on horizontal top bar beekeeping. In the meantime, the Langstroth hive is sitting on the patio open for visitors. When the days are really nice it looks like we might have a colony of bees living in the hive. They are eating well while there are here. Best Bees will be picking up the hive soon, but while its here I am happy to let the bees get their fill of honey.. ...

Honey can be a sweetener. Its consistency is both pliable and thick and Prepared by amassing buds by the honey-bees and other relatable bugs. This nectar is actually the sugary secretions of plants obtained from secretions of other insects; as an example, honeydew, by the system of regurgitation, access to enzymes, enzymes, along with water flow. The wax structure in which the substance is stored is popularly called as honeycombs. The collection of honey in bees and other insects is also known as beekeeping or apiculture. The honey bee has gained this immense popularity because of the global commercial manufacturing, demand, and consumption.. What will be the chemical properties of honey (miel)?. The honey (miel) is sweet for taste. ) This sweetness Comes from the monosaccharides fructose and glucose plus is slightly similar to the table glucose, also known as sucrose. Stingless beekeeping (meliponiculture) is a unique eco-friendly agro-practice with the potential for environmental amelioration, employment and income generation. Meliponiculture would be ideal for generation of supplementary income to resource-poor farmers around forests, in addition to conservation of stingless bees. Assessment of the knowledge of stingless bees by community around Kakamega forest indicated that most people know stingless bees but they do not undertake any active conservation measures. Results obtained from this study indicated that two genera of stingless bees, Meliponula and Hypotrigona occur in Kakamega forest. The community around Kakamega forest identifies stingless bees by their morphological features, nesting architecture and taste, smell and colour of their honey. Trials on queen rearing process of H. gribodoi indicated that this species rears queens in two ways: (i) using a special queen cell which is bigger than other brood cells (ii) through emergency queen rearing ...
Abstract Recently it has become a serious problem that honeybees suddenly vanish in their colony, which is referred to as a colony collapse disorder( CCD). We have made it clear by the field experiments for about four months what effect neonicotinoid pesticides such as dinotefuran and clothianidin have on the occurrence of CCD. Eight colonies consisting of about ten-thousand honeybees in each colony were investigated under the practical beekeeping conditions in our apiary. In this study foods containing dinotefuran of 1 ppm to 10 ppm or clothianidin of 0.4 ppm to 4 ppm were fed into a beehive. Three levels of concentration were 10( high-conc.), 50( middle-conc.) and 100 low-conc.) times lower than that in practical use. The changes of adult bees, brood and the pesticide intake in each colony were directly examined. They suggest that each colony with the pesticide administered collapses to nothing after passing through a state of CCD, the high-concentration pesticides seem to work ...
Marketing outlets choice is one of the most important farm household decisions to sell their produce and has a great impact on household income. Though the study area has great potential of honey production, the farmers in the study area faced the marketing problem in choice of appropriate honey market outlets. This study was therefore carried out to analyze determinants of honey producers market outlet choice decisions in Chena district. A total of 154 honey-producing households were surveyed, and the data obtained were analyzed by using multivariate probit model. The results show that most sampled households in the study area sell their honey to cooperative outlet as compare to other outlets. The results of the econometric model show the dependency of household level marketing decisions as a strategy to maximize their incomes in the long term. The model results also reveal that the quantity of honey sold, frequency extension contact, beekeeping experience, distance to nearest market, market

It seems that every few months I appreciate a new environmental benefit to green roofs. Two that have recently impressed me are: (i) the realization that green roofs are ideal new locations for urban weather stations (as opposed to traditional asphalt roofs with their extreme temperature biases); and (ii) a burgeoning urban beekeeping movement may be a new synergy to tap into with green roofs.. Siting weather stations in urban areas has always been a tricky endeavor. Issues like security and extreme localized heat sources (e.g. asphalt, vehicles, heating and air conditioning sources) are primary concerns. For these reasons, the National Weather Service stations are usually sited in urban parks or airports. Nevertheless many urban weather stations are still located on rooftops, but they can be suspect because of the temperature biases of dark roof membranes which can easily reach 176 degrees F (80 C). Green roofs completely remove the temperature biases of rooftops as they are essentially meadows ...
CD Congress Centre Ljubljana is the culprit that catering has established itself as a concept and type of service in Slovenia. For many years the main protocol events in the country were held at CD. It is not surprising that this part of the offer is exemplary, arranged with an excellent centre for the production and distribution of food. It seems that together with the institution the largest Slovenian catering companies have also grown - Jezeršek catering, Maxi and Vivo catering. Inspired by the national heritage, commitment to green, sustainability and social responsibility, the CD Congress Centre Ljubljana is also a pioneer of urban beekeeping in Slovenia. Its honey production has definitely influenced the catering possibilities providing a winning combination of a unique culinary experience. ...

The Los Angeles River, reengineered from the late 1930s to the 1960s into a concrete channel for flood control and industrialization, has recently been the focus of revitalization efforts. Our Urban Agriculture Green Infrastructure Plan seeks to transform a known food desert along the river into a series of healthy, resilient neighborhoods capable of growing and cultivating their own food.. Stretching 660 acres, this urban agriculture hub would build community; provide greater access to healthy food among residents in the area; and stimulate economic development. New industries could include farming, insect farming, beekeeping, animal husbandry, aquaculture, and fungiculture. And, such sustainable business enterprises could set up shop in what are currently abandoned or underused lots, community gardens, or even on rooftops. Ultimately, the plan provides a vision for a future LA-and a future LA River-that is healthy, connected, and equitably prosperous.. ...

The Asian market is potentially very large and with proper marketing should have tremendous value. In Asia, consumer preferences and traditions differ from those prevailing in Europe and North America and have facilitated marketing and increased production. Local cosmetic industries in particular, have very great potential for growth once quality and marketing (most of all packaging) approach the levels of Western competitors. The use of royal jelly in cosmetics has led to some very successful products. In one case (in Thailand) a business originally based on cosmetics with royal jelly and other bee products was so successful that it grew into a multimillion dollar enterprise.. While these successful companies became large operations, there is still plenty of room for small, local businesses (beauty parlours, vendors, pharmacies and others) to formulate articles containing bee products and in particular, royal jelly. These need to be adapted and selected according to local consumer preferences ...
