Using a castor oil-balsam of Peru-trypsin ointment to assist in healing skin graft donor sites. (1/15)

Skin graft donor sites are partial-thickness wounds that are commonly managed with gauze-type dressings. As such, they often cause more pain and difficulty in healing than the graft-recipient site. A retrospective study was conducted to ascertain the effects of using a castor oil-balsam of Peru-trypsin containing ointment on skin graft donor sites in 36 consecutive patients (16 female, 20 male). All donor sites were epithelialized after 11 days (range 6 to 11 days, mean 8 days) and no wound complications were observed. Given these healing results and product ease of use, this particular formulation has become the facilities' current treatment of choice and further study is indicated and warranted.  (+info)

The effect of different formulations of equivalent active ingredients on the performance of two topical wound treatment products. (2/15)

Product selection for the management of pressure ulcers or perineal dermatitis is typically based on consideration of active ingredients, but a growing body of evidence suggests that delivery vehicles also may influence product safety and efficacy. A 10-day, randomized, controlled experimental study was conducted to compare the safety and efficacy of two prescription products used for the treatment of pressure ulcers and perineal dermatitis. Both products contain equivalent active ingredients (balsam of Peru, castor oil, and trypsin), but one product delivers these ingredients in an ointment base while the other uses an aerosol spray. Sixty healthy volunteers (> 65 years of age) underwent intentional creation of two equivalent skin wounds (approximately 6 mm in diameter) using an Erbium-YAG laser. Volunteers served as their own control. Wounds were randomized to treatment with one of the balsam of Peru products or saline. Wounds were evaluated every other day. Significant differences between treatments were observed for most outcome variables (edema, scabbing, erythema, epithelialization). Wounds managed with the ointment-based product had lower edema, scabbing, and erythema scores and higher epithelialization scores than the spray or saline managed wounds. The results of this study confirm that formulation of the vehicle base can have a significant effect on product safety and effectiveness.  (+info)

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia syndrome bullous lesions treated with trypsin-balsam of peru-castor oil ointment: a case study. (3/15)

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia syndrome is a serious, potentially life-threatening adverse reaction to the use of heparin anticoagulation therapy that can result in significant skin damage and organ morbidity. A case study design is used to describe the innovative use of a topical wound treatment (trypsin-balsam of Peru-castor oil ointment) on bullous lesions related to the effects of this syndrome. An elderly, morbidly obese woman was treated for 2 weeks with twice-daily applications of the product along with non-adherent oil emulsion dressings. Oozing decreased substantially within a few days and open blisters closed within 1 week. After 2 weeks of therapy, the bullous skin reaction was fully resolved with no recurrence. The results of this case study suggest that this topical product may have had a positive effect on the bullous lesions and should be considered for use in other similar significant integumentary reactions.  (+info)

Managing a traumatic wound in a geriatric patient. (4/15)

Clinical management of a wound in a geriatric patient requires an understanding of age-related changes in the skin and the knowledge to make appropriate treatment choices. This case study describes clinical assessment and management of a traumatic hip wound in a 75-year-old patient. In addition to addressing his nutritional status by providing supplements, topical wound care preparations, including papain-urea and castor oil/balsam of Peru/trypsin, were used as a conservative approach to address debridement and periwound skin concerns. Extra vigilance is required to assess wounds in geriatric patients to determine proper wound treatment and achieve optimum results. Additional studies to evaluate optimal treatment strategies in the clinical management of traumatic wounds in the geriatric population are needed.  (+info)

Larvicidal activity of oil-resin fractions from the Brazilian medicinal plant Copaifera reticulata Ducke (Leguminosae-Caesalpinoideae) against Aedes aegypti (Diptera, Culicidae). (5/15)

Oil-resin fractions from Copaifera reticulata Ducke (Leguminosae-Caesalpinoideae) were evaluated for larvicidal activity on third larval instars of Aedes aegypti, in searching for alternative control methods for this mosquito. The bioactive fractions were chemically monitored by thin-layer chromatography, (1)H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry. Bioassays were performed using five repetitions, at a temperature of 28+/-1 degrees C, relative humidity of 80+/- 5% and light and dark cycles of 12h. Mortality was indicated by darkening of the cephalic capsule after 24h of exposure of the larvae to the solutions. The most active fractions were CRM1-4 (sesquiterpenes) and CRM5-7 (labdane diterpenes), which showed LC50 values of 0.2 and 0.8 ppm, respectively.  (+info)

Acoustic pressure wound therapy in the treatment of stage II pressure ulcers. (7/15)

Pressure ulcers are localized skin injuries secondary to unrelieved pressure or friction. Patients with immobility issues are at increased risk for developing pressure ulcers. In 2004, stricter federal regulations for prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers in institutional settings--eg, long-term care facilities--were introduced. Effective, low-cost treatments for pressure ulcers are needed; acoustic pressure wound therapy (APWT), a noncontact, low-frequency, therapeutic ultrasound system, is one option. A retrospective case series of six long-term care patients (two men and one woman, age range 61 to 92 years), each with one Stage II pressure ulcer, is presented. Acoustic pressure wound therapy was provided as an adjunct to standard treatment that included balsam of Peru/castor oil/trypsin ointment, hydrogel, hydrocolloid dressings, silver dressings, and offloading. Outcomes (days to healing) were determined through changes in wound dimensions. Study participants each received APWT for 3 to 4 minutes three to four times weekly. In four of the six wounds, the average number of days to healing was 22. One of the two remaining patients discontinued treatment at 95% healed; treatment for the sixth patient was ongoing due to hospitalization that delayed APWT. In a long-term care setting, APWT added to standard of care may accelerate healing of Stage II pressure ulcers.  (+info)

In patent-medicine parlance, the term balsam, originally describing an aromatic resin, came to apply generally to "an aromatic oily or resinous medicinal preparation, for healing wounds or soothing pain," according to The Oxford English Dictionary (1971). Among early products using the name was Robert Turlingtons Balsam, an English cure-all patented in 1744. By 1750 it was available in bottles, and by 1754 it was being sold in vials in an attempt to eliminate both bottle re-use and product counterfeiting. In the 1760s Turlingtons Balsam was being sold in the United States (Fike 2006, 27). Quite often balsams were cough medicines of their day, including such products as Abietene Cough Balsam, Dr. J.S. Clarks Balsam for the Throat & Lungs, Congreves Celebrated Balsamic Elixir for Cough & Asthma, Mrs. Dinsmores Cough & Croup Balsam, Halls Pulmonary Balsam (a "Safe and Speedy Cure for Diseases of the Throat and Lungs"), and Mastens Balsam of Horehound ("for throat, lungs, & etc."), and so on. ...

Balsam of Peru, also known and marketed by many other names, is a balsam derived from a tree known as Myroxylon, which is grown in Central America (primarily in El Salvador) and South America. Balsam of Peru is used in food and drink for flavoring, in perfumes and toiletries for fragrance, and in medicine and pharmaceutical items for healing properties. It has a sweet scent. In some instances, Balsam of Peru is listed on the ingredient label of a product by one of its various names, but it may not be required to be listed by its name by mandatory labeling conventions. It can cause allergic reactions, with numerous large surveys identifying it as being in the "top five" allergens most commonly causing patch test reactions. It may cause inflammation, redness, swelling, soreness, itching, and blisters, including allergic contact dermatitis, stomatitis (inflammation and soreness of the mouth or tongue), cheilitis (inflammation, rash, or painful erosion of the lips, oropharyngeal mucosa, or angles of ...

By Jennifer Copley (Last Updated 8 December 2015). The roots of Christmas tree decoration can be found in the Celtic practice of bringing greenery indoors during midwinter celebrations. However, the modern Christmas tree, which was originally decorated with apples, nuts, and strips of red paper, originated in Germany during the seventeenth century, and the practice likely arose as a way of brightening the gloomy midwinter days. The French added lit candles to Christmas trees during the 1700s, a precursor to the strings of electric lights used to decorate modern Christmas trees.. German immigrants brought the practice of Christmas tree decorating to North America in the 1800s, and during this era, additional ornaments were introduced, including glass balls, chains, figures, and toys.. In the 1900s, Christmas tree farms arose to supply the increasing demand while preventing the destruction of forests. Today, in the United States alone, up to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold annually, and ...

Three species of true firs in the Pacific Northwest--Abies gran-dis, grand fir; A. amabilis, Pacific silver fir; and A. lasiocarpa, subalpine fir--are severely damaged or killed by an imported insect pest, the balsam woolly aphid (Chermes (Adelges) piceae Ratz.), Infestations of this insect cause abnormalities in the wood and, in some cases, result in death of the tree. Wood samples were collected from five infested and five noninfested trees of each of the three species. Cross, radial, and tangential sections were taken from the wood samples, and samples were also macerated to separate the cells. Measurements were made of four anatomical characteristics: cell wall thickness, cell width, fibril angle, and tracheid length. Measurements were made of wood that was produced before infestation of the tree, wood of the same tree that was produced after infestation, and wood of noninfested trees. Wood produced after infestation in all three species is like compression wood in that the percentage of ...

So the information about the prevention of colds has also proved to be true ...
Named after the masterpiece by German writer Herman Hesse, Narziss and Goldmund are a pair of fragrances for men and women, respectively, from the Dorissima line of Doris Brugger. Brugger has an impressive resume - she was mentored by Gianni Versace and later consulted with Lorenzo Villoresi about the creation of her products. The fragrances were inspired by her travels to India and Sri Lanka and combine natural essences of the Far East to create captivating fragrances for both men and women.. Goldmund Eau de Parfum is a blend of tonka beans, vanilla, iris root, rose, powdery carnation, benzoin, sandalwood, soft musk, balsam notes, Peru balsam, and allspice. A warm, sweet and spicy fragrance, Goldmund calls to mind a gentler Aqaba, with an accent on the sandalwood. Seemlessly blended, the scent opens with a spicy floral zest and then relaxes into a creamy semi-floral oriental. Never quite relinquishing the accents of rose and carnation, the fragrance ultimately dries to a rich powder of balsam, ...

Pregnant female Swiss mice were divided into 8 groups (n = 15). Three groups received copaiba oil, via gavage, in the following doses: 0.3 mL·Kg-1, 0.6 mL·Kg-1 and 0.9 mL·Kg-1 (b.w.), associated to phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), intraperitoneal (i.p.). Hemmers recommended that people with mold sensitivity keep a live Christmas tree in the house for only four to seven days. An artificial tree may be a better option for people with mold allergies, he added, but they carry their own set of problems, especially if theyve been stored in the attic or basement where they can collect dust and mold.. Although Christmas trees are not a problem for most people with allergies, said Dr. David Khan, an associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, there are things you can do to minimize their impact.. "If one is mold-allergic, running an air cleaner in the same room as the tree could theoretically reduce the mold exposure, but this has not been studied," he said. "For some people who are sensitive to odors, the aroma from the tree, which most people like, could irritate their nose and cause symptoms. For these people, avoiding live trees may be best.". Before people start avoiding live Christmas ...

Soil moisture is critical the first year that seedlings are in the ground. In East Texas, Christmas tree plantations generally receive adequate rainfall for first-year seedlings if wee(I competition is controlled around trees. In South Central and West Texas, trickle irrigation systems are used on Afghan pine plantations.. Always control competing vegetation. Weeds compete with trees for available soil moisture and shade lower branches, causing sparse foliage in the lower portion of marketable trees. To control weeds, use herbicides in the immediate vicinity of the trees, but use them very carefully according to label directions. Mow row middles, avoiding damage to lower tree branches. Cultivation is another weed control tool which can be used but avoid root damage.. To produce quality trees, it is essential to begin shaping Virginia and Afghan pines in the second year of production.
