Abstract:Chronic pains management costs billions of dollars in medical exchequer to the world population. Additionally, 77% of people with chronic pains also have a degree of medically treatable depression. Opioids have a narrower safety index due to their side effects associated with its tolerance, hyperalgesia and subsequent dependence. Likewise, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and anticonvulsants, also have limited safety and tolerability profile in the management of chronic pains. Bacopa ...
Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the cerebral cortex, maintains the inhibitory tones that counter balances neuronal excitation. When this balance is perturbed, seizures may ensue. In the present study, alterations of the general GABA, GABAA and GABAB receptors in the cerebral cortex of the epileptic rat and the therapeutic application of Bacopa monnieri were investigated. Scatchard analysis of [3H]GABA, [3H]bicuculline and [3H]baclofen in the cerebral cortex of the epileptic rat showed significant decrease in Bmax (P | 0.001) compared to control. Real Time PCR amplification of GABA receptor subunits such as GABAAά1, GABAAγ, GABAAδ, GABAB and GAD where down regulated (P | 0.001) in epileptic rats. GABAAά5 subunit and Cyclic AMP responsible element binding protein were up regulated. Confocal imaging study confirmed the decreased GABA receptors in epileptic rats. Epileptic rats have deficit in radial arm and Y maze performance. Bacopa monnieri and Bacoside-A
Effect of pre- and post-treatment with Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) on phencyclidine-induced disruptions in object recognition memory and cerebral calbindin, parvalbumin, and calretinin immunoreactivity in rats P Piyabhan,1 P Tingpej,2 N Duansak11Division of Physiology, Department of Preclinical Science, Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University, KlongLuang, Pathumthani, Thailand; 2Division of Microbiology, Department of Preclinical Science, Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University, KlongLuang, Pathumthani, ThailandBackground: Decreased gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic neurons in the brain of both schizophrenic patients and animal models indicates that impairment of GABAergic function is implicated in pathophysiology of the disorder. Decreased GABAergic neurotransmission might be also involved in cognitive impairment, which is developed in schizophrenia. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) could be a new treatment and prevention for this cognitive deficit in schizophrenia by increasing GABAergic neurons to a
Over the last 50 years, laboratories around the world analyzed the pharmacological effect of |i|Bacopa monniera|/i| extract in different dimensions, especially as a nerve tonic and memory enhancer. Studies in animal model evidenced that |i|Bacopa|/i| treatment can attenuate dementia and enhances memory. Further, they demonstrate that |i|Bacopa|/i| primarily either acts via antioxidant mechanism (i.e., neuroprotection) or alters different neurotransmitters (serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), dopamine (DA), acetylcholine (ACh), |i|γ|/i|-aminobutyric acid (GABA)) to execute the pharmacological effect. Among them, 5-HT has been shown to fine tune the neural plasticity, which is a substrate for memory formation. This review focuses on the studies which trace the effect of |i|Bacopa|/i| treatment on serotonergic system and 5-HT mediated key molecular changes that are associated with memory formation.
Another thing that makes bacopa a powerful nootropic is how it is also named as an adaptogen. Adaptogens are substances that help the body get rid of stress and bacopa works with that. Also, this admirable herb helps in promoting better kinase function. This is the enzyme which is found in the brain to process the breakdown of crucial substances which are then absorbed by the brain cells. When it comes to well-improved kinases, brain cell damages are easily repaired and restored.. Little Known Secrets about Bacopa. Author: Muhammad Shahid, Fazal Subhan, Gowhar Ali, Ihsan Ullah, Javaid Alam, Sami Ullah and Khalid Rauf. Publishing Date: 2017. E-ISSN: 1011-601X. Volume 30 Issue 6. ABSTRACT:. Opioid addiction is associated with oxidative cell injury in neuronal cells. In this study, Bacopa monnieri (L.), a reputed nootropic plant, was evaluated against morphine-induced histopathological changes in the cerebellum of rats. B. monnieri methanolic extract (mBME) (40 mg/kg, p.o) and ascorbic acid (50 mg/kg, i.p) were administered two hours before morphine (20 mg/kg, i.p) for 14 and 21 days. The in vitro antioxidant activity of mBME was determined by 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging assay. Morphine produced vacuolization of basket and stellate cells and reduced the size of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum after 14 days. However, treatment for 21 days was associated with severe shrinkage of Purkinje cells with loss of their characteristic flask-shaped appearance as well as degeneration of ...

The antioxidants in Gingko have been suggested to dilate and widen your brain blood vessels - resulting in more blood, oxygen and nutrients being delivered to your neurons.. Additionally, antioxidants protect our brain cells (and other cells for that matter) from free radicals, unstable molecules that get generated as byproducts of fundamental bodily functions and daily lifestyle. Stress and an unhealthy diet can increase levels of free radicals, increasing the need for antioxidants to protect brain cells from damage.. The result of these effects of Ginkgo is that you might notice your memory and focus improve. However, its important to note that theres some conflicting evidence showing that Ginkgos effect might be too weak to notice. So, theres a chance you might not feel it working. More on Ginkgo and the research here: examine.com/supplements/ginkgo-biloba/. In terms of Bacopa, its much more noticeable, in almost everyone. Its got a lot of scientific studies showing that it can reliably ...

PURPLE CORN. Purple corn contains a variety of phytonutrients (plant nutrients) including massive amounts of phenolics and anthocyanin. Research shows that crops with the highest phenolic and anthocyanin content also have the highest antioxidant activity. Anthocyanin are a type of complex flavonoid that produces blue, purple or red colors. Anthocyanin are anti-inflammatory and encourage connective tissue regeneration. As well as being powerful antioxidants that keep us looking young and protected from disease, they promote blood flow and reduce cholesterol. It appears that anthocyaninmay stabilize and protect capillaries and blood vessels from free radical damage, and they have been shown to promote collagen formation (which is great for our skin) and improve circulation.. Gotu kola will generally be the better choice where there are strong indications of pitta imbalance. This is, of course, a subtle distinction because both herbs are considered to be tridoshic (balancing to vata, pitta, and kapha) and for specific conditions one may be preferred over the other.
