Acupuncture inhibits vagal gastric acid secretion stimulated by sham feeding in healthy subjects. (1/1)

In a prospective randomised study, the effect of acupuncture on sham feeding stimulated gastric acid secretion was investigated. In eight healthy volunteers (five men, three women, mean (SEM) age 26.3 (4.7) years) various methods of acupuncture were performed. Apart from the sham procedure, the acupuncture was performed at the classic acupuncture points. Electroacupuncture reduced gastric acid secretion expressed as median (range) significantly during the first 30 minute period to 1.6 (0-5.2) mmol compared with 3.8 (2.3-14.5) mmol (p < 0.05) during control period (sham feeding without acupuncture). Inhibition of gastric acid secretion by electroacupuncture was also significant during the second 30 minute period (0.2 (0-5.6) v 3.6 (0.3-9.1) mmol; p < 0.05) and for peak acid output (0.8 (0.2-5.1) v 7.6 (3.4-12.1) mmol; p < 0.05). Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation also resulted in significant reduction of gastric acid secretion during the first 30 minute period (1.0 (0-3.6) mmol v 3.8 (2.3-14.5) mmol; p < 0.05), and peak acid output (3.6 (1.2-12.0) v 7.6 (3.4-12.1) mmol; p < 0.05). The classic needle acupuncture, laser acupuncture, and sham acupuncture had no significant effect on gastric acid secretion. This study shows firstly that in healthy volunteers, only the versions of acupuncture using more pronounced stimulation (electroacupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), but not those with only mild stimulation of the nerves (classic needle acupuncture, laser acupuncture), and secondly only acupuncture performed at defined points lead to significant reduction in gastric acid secretion.  (+info)

A few years ago, one of my nephews had a gallstone. As far as we are away from the medical world, we thought that the gallstone was equal to a kidney stone, and lots of water or a few quick beers would solve the problem.. We also knew that in the worst case scenario, we would have to operate on him, that would be a laser surgery costing a few hundred dollars and hed be out of the hospital within the week. And that is when we found out what a gallstone actually is.. In a few days, we found out that the gallstone was a stone of the gallbladder, which does not have any place to go out, unlike the kidney stone.. We also found out that the only way to remove the gallstone was to remove the gallbladder - something like if the flute is broken there would be no music.. However, we were not comfortable with the idea of my twenty eight year old nephew having to undergo a surgery that would effectively have one of his body organs removed. That is when we learn about holistic medicines like homeopathy and ...
Group treatment of alcoholism in the early twentieth century can be traced to New Thought, a religious and philosophical movement in the second half of the nineteenth century which focused on mind and spirit, and the Emmanuel Movement, a Protestant church sponsored, pre-Freudian psychotherapeutic system established in 1906 by Reverend Elwood Worcester. Relaxation therapy and autosuggestion were used to reach the unconscious. New Thought taught that sickness was the result of failure to recognize the Christian God as sole reality and that right thinking had a healing effect. The Emmanuel Movement claimed that all diseases including alcoholism had physical, mental and spiritual components and that prayer, group support and self-help were important to recovery.. Reverend Worcesters Emmanuel Movement first focused on treatment of tuberculosis in Bostons slums. Later, treatment included a variety of mental disorders, including alcoholism. Treatment redirected the attention of patients away from ...

John Haygarth tested a placebo effect in the 18th century.[1] It showed "to a degree which has never been suspected, what powerful influence upon diseases is produced by mere imagination".[2]. Émile Coué, a French apothecary (pharmacist), working between 1882 and 1910, discovered what later came to be known as the "Placebo effect". He reassured his clients by praising each remedys efficiency and leaving a small positive notice with each medication. In 1901 Coué began to study under hypnosis. In 1913, Coué and his wife founded La Société Lorraine de Psychologie appliquée.[3] His book Self-mastery through conscious autosuggestion was published in England (1920) and in the United States (1922).. ...

Hodotermes is a genus that contains two species of African harvester termites known as H. mossambicus and H. erithreensis. The collective range of both species extends from some areas of South Africa through the savannas in East Africa to Palaearctic North Africa. Both species are subterraneous, nesting under the ground, but the nests of H. mossambicus can contain several sphere-shaped hives, and long tunnels connect the rooms of each nest. It is typical for all harvester termites to have compound eyes are serrated edges on the mandibles.. Breeding members of the Hodotermes genus, known as alates, emerge from nests in the summer months after evening hours. Once the alates land, they break off their wings and begin searching for suitable mates. Managing the Aging Process - Alternative MedicineManaging the Aging Process - Alternative Medicine

Weight gain may be one of the more surprising signs of aging. It certainly wont happen to everyone, since genetics plays a big part in it, but a large number of people are often surprised by the pounds creeping in and the struggle to get it off. This is especially if they were able to drop weight easier in the younger years. Weight gain is harder on the older body when you consider the combination of other issues (loss of joint function and muscle strength in particular) that are at play. It means a higher risk of developing high blood pressure, heart issues, and diabetes.. Visiting with a licensed dietitian for a diet plan that is factoring in your current state of health is a great way to slim down and avoid furthering your health issues. Original Medicare will cover the costs if your physician is taking on the medical diet plan. Medicare B will cover it if your BMI is 30 or higher.. While none of these things sound pleasant, they do happen. It may not happen for a long time or you could ...
