Archive of mass spectral data files on recordable CD-ROMs and creation and maintenance of a searchable computerized database. (1/1111)

A database containing names of mass spectral data files generated in a forensic toxicology laboratory and two Microsoft Visual Basic programs to maintain and search this database is described. The data files (approximately 0.5 KB/each) were collected from six mass spectrometers during routine casework. Data files were archived on 650 MB (74 min) recordable CD-ROMs. Each recordable CD-ROM was given a unique name, and its list of data file names was placed into the database. The present manuscript describes the use of search and maintenance programs for searching and routine upkeep of the database and creation of CD-ROMs for archiving of data files.  (+info)

LocaLisa: new technique for real-time 3-dimensional localization of regular intracardiac electrodes. (2/1111)

BACKGROUND: Estimation of the 3-dimensional (3D) position of ablation electrodes from fluoroscopic images is inadequate if a systematic lesion pattern is required in the treatment of complex arrhythmogenic substrates. METHODS AND RESULTS: We developed a new technique for online 3D localization of intracardiac electrodes. Regular catheter electrodes are used as sensors for a high-frequency transthoracic electrical field, which is applied via standard skin electrodes. We investigated localization accuracy within the right atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle by comparing measured and true interelectrode distances of a decapolar catheter. Long-term stability was analyzed by localization of the most proximal His bundle before and after slow pathway ablation. Electrogram recordings were unaffected by the applied electrical field. Localization data from 3 catheter positions, widely distributed within the right atrium, right ventricle, or left ventricle, were analyzed in 10 patients per group. The relationship between measured and true electrode positions was highly linear, with an average correlation coefficient of 0.996, 0.997, and 0.999 for the right atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle, respectively. Localization accuracy was better than 2 mm, with an additional scaling error of 8% to 14%. After 2 hours, localization of the proximal His bundle was reproducible within 1.4+/-1.1 mm. CONCLUSIONS: This new technique enables accurate and reproducible real-time localization of electrode positions in cardiac mapping and ablation procedures. Its application does not distort the quality of electrograms and can be applied to any electrode catheter.  (+info)

Using a multidisciplinary automated discharge summary process to improve information management across the system. (3/1111)

We developed and implemented an automated discharge summary process in a regional integrated managed health system. This multidisciplinary effort was initiated to correct deficits in patients' medical record documentation involving discharge instructions, follow-up care, discharge medications, and patient education. The results of our team effort included an automated summary that compiles data entered via computer pathways during a patient's hospitalization. All information regarding admission medications, patient education, follow-up care, referral at discharge activities, diagnosis, and other pertinent medical events are formulated into the discharge summary, discharge orders, patient discharge instructions, and transfer information as applicable. This communication process has tremendously enhanced information management across the system and helps us maintain complete and thorough documentation in patient records.  (+info)

Mapping of atrial activation with a noncontact, multielectrode catheter in dogs. (4/1111)

BACKGROUND: Endocardial mapping of sustained arrhythmias has traditionally been performed with a roving diagnostic catheter. Although this approach is adequate for many tachyarrhythmias, it has limitations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a novel noncontact mapping system for assessing atrial tachyarrhythmias. METHODS AND RESULTS: The mapping system consists of a 9F multielectrode-array balloon catheter that has 64 active electrodes and ring electrodes for emitting a locator signal. The locator signal was used to construct a 3-dimensional right atrial map; it was independently validated and was highly accurate. Virtual electrograms were calculated at 3360 endocardial sites in the right atrium. We evaluated right atrial activation by positioning the balloon catheter in the mid right atrium via a femoral venous approach. Experiments were performed on 12 normal mongrel dogs. The mean correlation coefficient between contact and virtual electrograms was 0.80+/-0.12 during sinus rhythm. Fifty episodes of atrial flutter induced in 11 animals were evaluated. In the majority of experiments, complete or almost complete reentrant circuits could be identified within the right atrium. Mean correlation coefficient between virtual and contact electrograms was 0.85+/-0.17 in atrial flutter. One hundred fifty-six episodes of pacing-induced atrial fibrillation were evaluated in 11 animals. Several distinct patterns of right atrial activation were seen, including single-activation wave fronts and multiple simultaneous-activation wave fronts. Mean correlation coefficient between virtual and contact electrograms during atrial fibrillation was 0.81+/-0.18. The accuracy of electrogram reconstruction was lower at sites >4.0 cm from the balloon center and at sites with a high spatial complexity of electrical activation. CONCLUSIONS: This novel noncontact mapping system can evaluate conduction patterns during sinus rhythm, demonstrate reentry during atrial flutter, and describe right atrial activation during atrial fibrillation. The accuracy of electrogram reconstruction was good at sites <4.0 cm from the balloon center, and thus the system has the ability to perform high-resolution multisite mapping of atrial tachyarrhythmias in vivo.  (+info)

Radiation-induced leukocyte entrapment in the rat retinal microcirculation. (5/1111)

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of irradiation on leukocyte dynamics in the rat retinal microcirculation. METHODS: Thirty-five Brown-Norway rats received a dose of 10 Gy irradiation in one fraction. Leukocyte dynamics were studied with acridine orange digital fluorography, in which a nuclear fluorescent dye of acridine orange is used and examined by scanning laser ophthalmoscope. This technique allowed visualization of fluorescent leukocytes in vivo. The leukocyte dynamics were evaluated at 0, 4, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days after the irradiation. RESULTS: Mean leukocyte velocity in the retinal capillaries decreased immediately. It partially recovered on day 4 but then gradually decreased up to the 2-month mark. Low-dose irradiation induced entrapment of leukocytes in the retinal microcirculation. The number of entrapped leukocytes gradually increased with time. The major retinal vessels significantly constricted immediately after irradiation. The diameter was reduced by 76% in arteries and 75% in veins, 2 months after irradiation. CONCLUSIONS: Entrapped leukocytes may be activated and exacerbate vascular injury and microinfarction and thus may participate in the pathogenesis of radiation retinopathy.  (+info)

Shift work-related problems in 16-h night shift nurses (1): Development of an automated data processing system for questionnaires, heart rate, physical activity and posture. (6/1111)

To assess the shift work-related problems associated with a 16-h night shift in a two-shift system, we took the following important factors into consideration; the interaction between circadian rhythms and the longer night shift, the type of morningness and eveningness experienced, the subjective sleep feeling, the subjects' daily behavior, the effectiveness of taking a nap during the long night shift, and finally the effectiveness of using several different kinds of measuring devices. Included among the measuring devices used were a standard questionnaire, repetitive self-assessment of subjective symptoms and daily behavior at short intervals, and a continuous recording of such objective indices as physical activity and heart rate. A potential problem lies in the fact that field studies that use such measures tend to produce a mass of data, and are thus faced with the accompanying technical problem of analyzing such a large amount of data (time, effort and cost). To solve the data analysis problem, we developed an automated data processing system. Through the use of an image scanner with a paper feeder, standard paper, an optical character recognition function and common application software, we were able to analyze a mass of data continuously and automatically within a short time. Our system should prove useful for field studies that produce a large amount of data collected with several different kinds of measuring devices.  (+info)

Use of bar code readers and programmable keypads to improve the speed and accuracy of manual data entry in the clinical microbiology laboratory: experience of two laboratories. (7/1111)

AIM: To assess the effect of the use of bar code readers and programmable keypads for entry of specimen details and results in two microbiology laboratories. METHODS: The solutions selected in each laboratory are described. The benefits resulting from the implementation were measured in two ways. The speed of data entry and error reduction were measured by observation. A questionnaire was completed by users of bar codes. RESULTS: There were savings in time and in reduced data entry errors. Average time to enter a report by keyboard was 21.1 s v 14.1 s for bar coded results entry. There were no observed errors with the bar code readers but 55 errors with keystroke entries. The laboratory staff of all grades found the system fast, easy to use, and less stressful than conventional keyboard entry. CONCLUSIONS: Indirect time savings should accrue from the observed reduction in incorrectly entered data. Any microbiology laboratory seeking to improve the accuracy and efficiency of data entry into their laboratory information systems should consider the adoption of this technology which can be readily interfaced to existing terminals.  (+info)

ProbeDesigner: for the design of probesets for branched DNA (bDNA) signal amplification assays. (8/1111)

MOTIVATION: The sensitivity and specificity of branched DNA (bDNA) assays are derived in part through the judicious design of the capture and label extender probes. To minimize non-specific hybridization (NSH) events, which elevate assay background, candidate probes must be computer screened for complementarity with generic sequences present in the assay. RESULTS: We present a software application which allows for rapid and flexible design of bDNA probesets for novel targets. It includes an algorithm for estimating the magnitude of NSH contribution to background, a mechanism for removing probes with elevated contributions, a methodology for the simultaneous design of probesets for multiple targets, and a graphical user interface which guides the user through the design steps. AVAILABILITY: The program is available as a commercial package through the Pharmaceutical Drug Discovery program at Chiron Diagnostics.  (+info)

A method for converting characters represented by a 16-bit character encoding standard or a numeric string into bar code symbols computes three values for the 16-bit code or numeric string. These three values are encoded into three bar code codes. Counts associated with the bar code codes are retrieved, along with character font data. Both the bar code symbols and the human-readable characters are printed on a bar code label. The printing apparatus includes a central processing unit for performing the above method, intercoupled with a bar code printer, memory, and secondary storage. A bar code reader similarly includes a central processing unit intercoupled with memory, secondary storage, and a bar code reader. This bar code reader scans the bar code symbols and decodes them into standard bar code codes. Groups of three codes are converted into three numeric values. The hexadecimal equivalent of these three numeric values is computed. The particular character represented by this hexadecimal value is

An apparatus and method is described for the separation of data from adjacent characters of standard type fonts, some of which character pairs may kern or touch. Characters which do not kern or touch are separated by white column detection. Characters which do kern are first detected by a kerning test, which consists of locating white bits which separate the characters while meeting pre-established standards of contiguity. Touching characters are detected by failure to pass the white column test, followed by failure to pass the kerning test. Characters which touch are separated by a statistical analysis, which involves determination of which of several probable vertical data columns has the least number of character bits. Following separation, the characters are compared with pre-established character patterns.

A hand-held bar code reader includes one or more photosensor arrays which provide a plurality of image sensor portions arranged for receiving images of a bar code through a plurality of selectively usable paths of different focal lengths which are defined by a passive optical system. A distance measuring system controls the sensor portion which is used to control the focal length. In one embodiment, the bar code image is projected to a plurality of receiving mirror surfaces, thence to a plurality of additional mirror surfaces and thence through lens barrels to mirrors which project the images to photosensor arrays. In another, the bar code image is projected to a plurality of receiving mirror surfaces, thence to an additional mirror surface, and thence through a single lens barrel to a mirror which projects the images to a photosensor array.
A bar code label is ready by automatically initiated scanning of the bar code symbol by a scanner on a stand. Light is reflected back to the scanner as from the bars of a code being scanned. Initially, the scanner is operated in a pulsed mode with low duty cycle (5%) pulses. These pulses are reflected from a reflective area unless an object is inserted and blocks the beam path. Then (because the beam is not scanning across the code) the reflected pulses (which are detected much like the bars and spaces of the code) are not detected. The ratio of the number of generated pulses to the reflected pulses is computed for a succession of pulses. If this ratio exceeds two (i.e., that the number of effective bars is less than the number of generated pulses during the succession), then the presence of the object is detected. The system, implemented in an application program in the microprocessor controller of the bar code scanner, initiates scanning of the bar code. Upon the detection of the code (a good read) or

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on historical printings is a challenging task mainly due to the complexity of the layout and the highly variant typography. Nevertheless, in the last few years, great progress has been made in the area of historical OCR, resulting in several powerful open-source tools for preprocessing, layout analysis and segmentation, character recognition, and post-processing. The drawback of these tools often is their limited applicability by non-technical users like humanist scholars and in particular the combined use of several tools in a workflow. In this paper, we present an open-source OCR software called OCR4all, which combines state-of-the-art OCR components and continuous model training into a comprehensive workflow. While a variety of materials can already be processed fully automatically, books with more complex layouts require manual intervention by the users. This is mostly due to the fact that the required ground truth for training stronger mixed models (for ...

Keyboard entry is often referred to as keycoding. It involves data entry into a file at a computer terminal. This technique is mainly used for entering attribute data that are only available on paper. For a small amount of data keyboard entry is a manageable task with the possibility of typographical errors. With the increasing amount of data, alternatives in the form of text scanners and optical character recognition (OCR) softwares are increasingly being used to read in data automatically. Attribute data, in a digital format, are linked to relevant map features in the spatial database using identification codes. These codes are allocated to each point, line or area feature in the dataset ...

One of the main issues that has kept companies from adopting paperwork automation is difficulty capturing digital signatures in a cost-effective and compliant manner. The E-Sign Act of 2000 in the United States provided that a document cannot be rejected on the basis of an electronic signature and required all companies to accept digital signatures on documents. Today there are sufficient cost-effective options available, including solutions that do not require end-users to purchase hardware or software. One of the great benefits of this type of software is that OCR (Optical character recognition) can be used, which enables the user to search the full text of any file. Additionally, user-defined tags can be added to each file to make it easier to locate certain files throughout the entire system. Some paperless software offers a scanner, hardware and software and works seamlessly in separating and organizing important documents. Paperless software might also allow people to enable online ...
To our knowledge, the most recent biomedical text mining and information extraction research using scientific papers as a source of information does not accept manuscripts in PDF format as input. Instead these works resort to the plain-text or HTML versions of the documents, if available, or to tools, such as PDF to text/HTML converters or optical character recognition software, to extract the text to be processed from PDF files. However, these tools do not normally preserve the structure of the documents, and frequently fail to sort the sentences in the correct reading order. This hampers the information extraction and text mining activities. This problem is particularly serious when the target documents have a multiple column layout. To address these issues, our PDF-to-ST converter automatically creates a data structure that preserves the original organization of the document, including sentence order. This facilitates the text processing tasks, since the text corresponding to any section of ...

Research in machine perception tackles the hard problems of understanding images, sounds, music and video. In recent years, our computers have become much better at such tasks, enabling a variety of new applications such as: content-based search in Google Photos and Image Search, natural handwriting interfaces for Android, optical character recognition for Google Drive documents, and recommendation systems that understand music and YouTube videos. Our approach is driven by algorithms that benefit from processing very large, partially-labeled datasets using parallel computing clusters. A good example is our recent work on object recognition using a novel deep convolutional neural network architecture known as Inception that achieves state-of-the-art results on academic benchmarks and allows users to easily search through their large collection of Google Photos. The ability to mine meaningful information from multimedia is broadly applied throughout Google. ...

Way back in the year 2000, Palm Inc tried to kill off the business card with a feature called beam that allowed users of its handheld computers to distribute their contact details by infrared, so that theyd be sucked up into ones contacts file.. The feature never quite took off, despite Palms infamous ad depicting it as good way to arrange a hookup. The exchange of small cellulose rectangles bearing basic identity and contact data - aka business cards - remain ubiquitous today. And also remains anachronistic at a time when nearly everyone carries a smartphone and would dearly love the chance to digitise data on business cards.. In February 2011 LinkedIn tried to do something about that anachronism by acquiring a company called CardMunch, whose app used an Iphones camera to scan and digitise business cards. CardMunch distinguished itself by using real people to assist with the scanning process instead of relying solely on optical character recognition, so that once it added your ...
Vimes, at this point, the scholars I worked with would prefer if librarians would focus on just providing access - they have no problems finding the resources, and in many cases are already better versed in the available search resources than librarians ever will be. And that is as they should be - theyre scholars in an information rich age with incredible electronic search access at their fingertips!. They already know about Journal X. They also know about Journal X, the translated version of Journal X because Journal X was orignally published in Russian. What they want is access to the X derivative of Article 4 from Journal X volume 4, in PDF format with full Optical Character Recognition, with no scanning or copying blemishes, within 1 minute or less from the moment they discovered they want the article. Mind you, due to the delay in translation, the volume numbers, page numbers and even article order between the two journals differ!. Too often, the results that I got from the library were ...

The power of digital technology finally unlocked the mystery. Earlier this summer, twenty-two years after he first accessioned the book as an unidentified ledger, Boise State University archivist Alan Virta turned to the Idaho Statesman Historical Archive, a new online database available from the Boise Public Library containing digitized copies of every issue of the citys oldest newspaper between 1864 and 1922. The beauty of the digital database is that every word is indexed via OCR (optical character recognition), and thus searchable. Virta hoped that by searching for the names of some of the people listed in the book he might find articles linking them to a common organization. And it was only a matter of minutes, on his fifth search, that he struck pay dirt. On entering the name G.W. Gess, he found an article from 1886 naming Gess as a newly-elected officer of the Central Idaho Stock Growers Association. C.W. Moore, in whose home the ledger was kept for more than 100 years, was named as ...

Dear Uncle Mole,. I hope this finds you well and enjoying the summer sunshine out of the mole-hole or mouse-house or wherever your research is taking you these days! I myself have been virtually buried with in silico work recently, but that is the exciting part about having manuscripts out and about and under review: theyre supposed to come back for revision. Maybe my enthusiasm for the minutiae is because Im still rather new at this, but isnt it quite exciting when you get that automated email after an electronic submission? I know that the editors arent really emailing me personally, but I cant help a small shiver of satisfaction when I see the message pop up in my inbox, especially if its from a fancypants journal like Molecule or The Original Colonies Journal of Medicine. In fact (I probably shouldnt be admitting this), I have been known to log on to the For Authors webpage numerous times in one day, simply to smile with glee at the site of a manuscript with my name on it labeled ...

Yes it would be good if this process could be expedited. I have been trying for weeks to get this medication for this patient. I spoken to several people at both Catamaran (the pharmacy benefit agency) and Wellmark. None would give their full names, and none had the authority to approve the medication if certain questions were not answered yes and there was no room for individual consideration. Yesterday, I saw the patient to get the release sign, and I noticed that the appeal and release are to be mailed (postal mailed that is) to different addresses, and only the release can be faxed. I am going to assume that there might be some difficulty in getting these to the same place in a timely manner for review, and during this time the patient continues to suffer. There seems to be no mechanism for electronic submission. This process has taken now hours of my time, and it has been weeks. I am going to attach the appeal letter in the hopes that perhaps as medical director you can get it to the ...

We considered the patient identification practice by study participants as the first key element in the pre-collection phase since it is obligatory if a VBS is intended to be collected from the right person who is designated on the request paper. In this regard, the laboratory professionals we studied were better than the non-laboratory professional (p , 0.001) in terms of confirming patients identities on routine basis. The malpractice reported by the non-laboratory professionals in inpatients might be resulted from I already know the patient sense as indicated by Wallin et al. and lack of knowledge and attitude [3, 12].. However, the approach followed by both groups of professionals to confirm identity of patients (both conscious and unconscious) was prone to misidentifications and subsequent pre-analytical errors. These could have serious consequences in the clinical decision-making process and may affect patient safety. It has been reported that patient identification errors were ...
Recent US government initiatives have led to wide adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). More and more health care institutions are storing patients data in an electronic format. This emerging practice is posing several security-related risks because electronic data can easily be shared within and across institutions. So, it is important to design robust frameworks which will protect patients privacy. We have designed a software package to detect security-related (particularly drug abuse) events in medical text. Several applications can use this information to make the hospital systems more secure. For example, portions of the clinical reports which contain description of critical events can be encrypted so that it can be viewed only by selected individuals. For more information about the software, please visit the following links: Drug Abuse Recognizer (Demo), Drug Abuse Recognizer (software). Drug abuse events in clinical text do not appear in isolation. Associated with a drug abuse ...

quote[i had this same trouble yesterday, while I was trying to partition and format from my computer a failing hard drive that I connected as slave.. I boot with verbose turned on, and noticed that the boot process froze while at gag30kx.sys.. I then tried to boot in safe mode and recovery console with no sucess.. As my system seemed to be doing well before I connected the bad HDD, I unplugged it and everything went OK.. What ****es me off is that how WinXP froze because of a slave drive!!. ...and worse of it: it wont tell you is because of that bad slave drive!!. Anyhoo, I booted from my BartPE CD and made a disk check and found out (or CONFIRMED) that the hard drive was in a very bad condition.. Hope this helps.. This isnt difficult, if youre willing to wipe out everything on the hard drive. The Vectra had Windows 3.1 and a pile of applications, nothing that I particularly needed to keep. Before plunging forward, I did a little research and backed up the MS-DOS directory onto floppy (using a zip compressor that was already on the computer). With a 160MB hard drive and 8MB of RAM, I figured I would have enough room to build a capable system without being tempted to overload it. A Google search for partition resizing programs turned up the free FIPS (First non-destructive Interactive Partiton Splitting program). Following the instructions, I put FIPS on a boot floppy and used it to shrink the C: partition. I wanted to reduce it to 10MB, but FIPS (for whatever reason) would not go below 16MB. After wiping out all the Windows 3.1 stuff and defragmenting the hard drive, I had less than 5MB on C: so Im not sure what happened. Oh well. Now I started Linux again and used the fdisk utility that came with ...
Wednesday, November 02 2005. This is a nerdy post about CD ripping.. When I built this humble PC several years ago, I was strapped for cash and bought the cheapest hard drive I could, so it was only 5400 rpm with a small cache. A few months ago I bought a newer, faster hard drive. I thought Id be really clever and put the old drive in an external USB2 enclosure, so I could use it for backups with rsync. This is working a treat.. I was just fiddling with grip, which I use for CD ripping, and I had a brainwave. What if I told it put the temporary wav files on the external drive? Then the encoder could write to the main hard drive without it thrashing with .wavs. After all, if I were consulting for a client, Id tell them to miprove performance by using separate drives for separate tasks, wouldnt I?. Its made a terrific difference. Not only has the time to rip a whole CD to mp3 about halved, but the PCs responsiveness to other tasks is so improved, its as though nothing were happening in ...

An iPhone with 32GB of space weighs about 0.000000000000000008 grams more when its solid state hard drive is full vs. all the bits flipped to zero. Dont believe me? The key is the use of solid state, flash hard drives in these devices and the mass-energy equivalence. So, for instance, in slightly more practical terms, if you were to add 85 killowatt-hours worth of energy to a Tesla Model S electric cars batteries (that would be a full charge), when you crunch the numbers, it would weigh about 3.4 micrograms more than when the battery packs are completely depleted. Now this is a relatively massive amount of energy compared to the higher energy of the trapped electrons in a 32GB flash drive that is full (and note, just because its full doesnt mean the transistors are all trapping extra electrons to be flipped to 1, instead of 0; the ASCII letter Z, for instance, stored in the hard drive would be 01011010).
