Subaru studies of the cosmic dawn. (1/4)

An overview on the current status of the census of the early Universe population is given. Observational surveys of high redshift objects provide direct opportunities to study the early epoch of the Universe. The target population included are Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAE), Lyman Break Galaxies (LBG), gravitationally lensed galaxies, quasars and gamma-ray bursts (GRB). The basic properties of these objects and the methods used to study them are reviewed. The present paper highlights the fact that the Subaru Telescope group made significant contributions in this field of science to elucidate the epoch of the cosmic dawn and to improve the understanding of how and when infant galaxies evolve into mature ones.  (+info)

The statistics do not look to favor the companions survival. Binary stars are separated from one another on average by about 8 astronomical units (AU), although they can be located as close as 0.1 AU in very close binaries. By comparison, Eckart, et al. note that when the G2 cloud is at periastron distance, and if its embedded primary star has a mass of one solar mass, its L1 Lagrange point will be positioned about 0.1 AU away; if the embedded star is an 8 solar mass star, its L1 point will lie further out, about 0.5 AU away; and if the cloud contains a 30 solar mass star, its Lagrange point will lie still further out, about 1 AU away. So with the Lagrange point being so close to the primary star (0.1 to 1 AU), the chances are that when the G2 cloud makes its closest approach to Sgr A*, the companion star will be orbitting outside the L1 Lagrange point and within the Galactic cores Roche Lobe. This means that it will almost certainly be stripped off and end up getting pulled into the core. If ...

Meet Edwina. Until she became ill, Edwina was very active in extracurricular activities, including soccer and dance. When we moved to LaGrange in December of 2011, she put soccer on hiatus for a couple of seasons to explore dance. Little did we know, but Eddy would not return to the sport she had played for so many years.. In the early morning hours of October 30, 2012 Eddy woke up vomiting. Since she was always healthy, I assumed she had a bug of some sort. But something in my spirit told me to call the nurse line for our insurance company, which I had never before done. The nurse felt it was probably a bug, too, but recommended I contact our family physician just to let them know what was going on. I spoke with the nurse from our family doctors office, who told me to check Eddys temperature. She had a fever. After giving her Tylenol, the fever hadnt began to break in an hour. I took her into the doctors office. We were at the clinic from 10 am until after 6 pm. We found out it wasnt a ...

Julie Meek. LaGrange. To the Editor:. I recently received a letter about a confined animal feeding operation (CAFO) that wants to be in our area. To tell the truth, I really hadnt given it much thought. Sometimes we get so tied up in our own lives that we forget that our lives are all connected so we must help every American with the truth, no matter where it lies or who it helps or hurts.. The Young Farms are who requested a land variance for this CAFO and before I go any further, I would like to say that when the government decided that our lake needed a sewer system because of the sewage that was being dumped in it, the official they sent out tested the lake water. It was clean. In fact, he had to urinate in it to make sure his machine was working. It was, but they went ahead with the sewer system anyway. I dont know what makes me angrier, the official urinating in the lake or the fact that they promised us the monthly bill would never be over $25, its now over $60 a month.. The Young ...

The second method is that the main crop and trap crop are entirely different species. An example of this is to plant sorghum as a trap crop for stink bugs which damage many kinds of vegetables.. How effective is trap cropping? Planting Blue Hubbard squash as a trap crop for cucurbit crops such as yellow squash, pumpkins and cucumbers has proven to be highly attractive to striped cucumber beetles. Ninety four percent of the cucumber beetles were in the trap crop. This reduced the infestation in the main crop to less than 7 percent.. Trap crops are not a silver bullet solution to controlling pests. It requires more pest management skills and knowledge of insect behavior. There are also insects not controlled with trap crops.. Next week: How do we implement a trap crop strategy?. Whats going on in Extension?. Become a Master Naturalist: The program begins March 31. It will run through June 6. Cost of the program is $175. Anonymity, which is more and more important to multi-receiver schemes, has been taken into consideration by many researchers recently. To protect the receiver anonymity, in 2010, the first multi-receiver scheme based on the Lagrange interpolating polynomial was proposed. To ensure the senders anonymity, the concept of the ring signature was proposed in 2005, but afterwards, this scheme was proven to has some weakness and at the same time, a completely anonymous multi-receiver signcryption scheme is proposed. In this completely anonymous scheme, the sender anonymity is achieved by improving the ring signature, and the receiver anonymity is achieved by also using the Lagrange interpolating polynomial. Unfortunately, the Lagrange interpolation method was proven a failure to protect the anonymity of receivers, because each authorized receiver could judge whether anyone else is authorized or not. Therefore, the completely anonymous multi-receiver signcryption mentioned above can only protect the sender
by default) after convergence, the probability is set to zero, the interval probabilities are renormalized so that they add to one, and iterations are restarted. Usually the algorithm converges in just a few more iterations. You can change the default value of the tolerance with the TOLPROB= option. You can specify the NOPOLISH option to avoid setting small probabilities to zero and restarting the algorithm. If you specify the ITPRINTEM option, a table summarizing the Turnbull estimate of the interval probabilities is displayed. The columns labeled Reduced Gradient and Lagrange Multiplier are used in checking final convergence of the maximum likelihood estimate. The Lagrange multipliers must all be greater than or equal to zero, or the solution is not maximum likelihood. See Gentleman and Geyer (1994) for more details of the convergence checking. Also see Meeker and Escobar (1998, Chapter 3) for more information. See Example 57.6 for an illustration. ...

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump on March 27, 2020. The $2 trillion economic relief package includes emergency aid funds to institutions of higher education. Phase 1 of the CARES Act funding provides emergency financial aid grants to students who meet the Department of Education eligibility guidelines. LaGrange College was awarded a total of $1,074,446. 50% of those funds, or $537,223, were provided as emergency financial aid grants to assist students in covering expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19. Those costs include eligible expenses under a students cost of attendance.. In keeping with the intent of the grant as stated in the CARES Act, the leadership of LaGrange College determined that residential students suffered the greatest loss due to the disruption of campus operations. Therefore, 430 eligible residential students received an allocation based on the meal ...
I have said many times on other feeds Im not anywhere near an expert with gravity or electric-plasma or many spectrums of the Advanced Science spectrum-if Moores law of computing power which may end 2019 with current technology, can be overcome by using Optical or Quantum conputers, then Moores laws of computing power may continue (2x power 1/2 cost every 18months) for well more than 100 Moores cycle, or about 150 years,-by 150 years , the amount of new discoveries and information gathered to change calculations and parameter changes with different varibles will by then give science a good General Idea how the Universe appeared per this feed- however, even with another 100 Moores cycles, the end results will not change that much more and may appear to most to be a matter of diminishing returns as the General ideas will really not change that much on the big picture. I like the idea of trying to know what the Universe truely looked like per this feeds age, - I admit there will be ...

This is a L1 lagrange point (there are 5 such points on this type of arrangement). 2. The centre of gravity of the earth / sun system should be taken into account when calculating the orbital velocity from : v = sq root ( r * net gravity) Net gravity calcs are from sun / earth centres, but the orbital radius (r) of the object is measured from the centre of gravity of the sun / earth system. Consider the utilization of a Lagrangian dual method which is convergent for consistent optimization problems. When it is used to solve an infeasible optimization problem, its inconsistency will then manifest itself through the divergence of the sequence of dual iterates. Will then the sequence of primal subproblem solutions still yield relevant information regarding the primal program? We answer this question in the affirmative for a convex program and an associated subgradient algorithm for its Lagrange dual. We show that the primal-dual pair of programs corresponding to an associated homogeneous dual function is in turn associated with a saddle-point problem, in which-in the inconsistent case-the primal part amounts to finding a solution in the primal space such that the Euclidean norm of the infeasibility in the relaxed constraints is minimized; the dual part amounts to identifying a feasible steepest ascent direction for the Lagrangian dual function. We present convergence results for a ...

N2 - The effect of film stability and wetting behavior under an imposed fluid distribution width on falling film transfer devices for thermal engineering systems are investigated with reference to a variational thermodynamic formulation. The principle of minimizing the energy of a given streamwise section of the film is applied to identify the stable condition as the most likely among the set of possible flow configurations. The evolution toward this stable condition is estimated while adopting a Lagrangian viewpoint. The Lagrange equation is written with reference to a single generalized wetting coordinate and its time derivative, under the effect of Rayleighs dissipation function and a generalized force associated with a scalar potential defined as the energy excess ...
In this paper, we combined a group of local regression predictors using a novel unbiased and normalized linear ensemble model (UNLEM) for the design of multiple predictor systems. In the UNLEM, the optimization of the ensemble weights is formulated equivalently to a constrained quadratic programming problem, which can be solved with the Lagrange multiplier. In our simulation experiments of data regression, the proposed multiple predictor system is composed of three different types of local regression predictors, and the effectiveness evaluation of the UNLEM was carried out on eight synthetic and four benchmark data sets. Results of the UNLEMs performance in terms of mean-squared error am significantly lower, in comparison with the popular simple average ensemble method. Moreover, the UNLEM is able to provide the regression predictions with a relatively higher normalized correlation coefficient than the results obtained with the simple average approach ...
4/8-9 Vuelta a Valencia: I bailed on the Sea Otter RR and came back for the 45+ Valencia race which started Saturday AM with a Stage 1 TT. I sucked and was buried on gc. The Stage 2 crit was in the afternoon, and Kim got into a good move with Tim Black so I just sat. We presented a family of finite elements that use a polynomial space augmented by certain matrix bubbles in Cockburn et al. (2010) A new elasticity element made for enforcing weak stress symmetry. Math. Comput., 79, 1331-1349 . In this sequel we exhibit a second family of elements that use the same matrix bubble. This second element uses a stress space smaller than the first while maintaining the same space for rotations (which are the Lagrange multipliers corresponding to a weak symmetry constraint). The space of displacements is of one degree less than the first method. The analysis, while similar to the first, requires a few adjustments as the new Fortin projector may not preserve weak symmetry, but we are able to prove optimal convergence for all the variables. Finally, we present a sufficient condition wherein a mixed method with weakly imposed stress symmetry in fact yields an exactly symmetric stress tensor approximation.

We should start by noting two things. First, the Asteroid Belt is not the only place you find asteroids, Jupiters Trojan Asteroids are nearly as numerous, and every planet, including Earth, has an equivalent to Jupiters Trojan Asteroids at its own Lagrange Points with the Sun. Though just as Jupiter dwarfs all the other planets so to does its collection of Lagrangian objects. They can quite big too, the largest 624 Hektor, is 400 km across, and has a size and shape similar to Pennsylvania.. And as these asteroids are at stable Lagrange Points, they orbit with Jupiter but always ahead and behind it, making transit to and from Jupiter much easier and making good waypoints.. Before we go out any further in the solar system we should probably address how you get the energy to stay alive. Mars is already quite cold compared to Earth, and the Asteroids and Jupiter even more so, but with thick insulation and some mirrors to bounce light in you can do fairly decently. Indeed, sunlight out by Jupiter ...

Eigenvalues are often introduced in the context of linear algebra or matrix theory. Historically, however, they arose in the study of quadratic forms and differential equations. In the 18th century Euler studied the rotational motion of a rigid body and discovered the importance of the principal axes.[9] Lagrange realized that the principal axes are the eigenvectors of the inertia matrix.[10] In the early 19th century, Cauchy saw how their work could be used to classify the quadric surfaces, and generalized it to arbitrary dimensions.[11] Cauchy also coined the term racine caractéristique (characteristic root) for what is now called eigenvalue; his term survives in characteristic equation.[12][13]. Fourier used the work of Laplace and Lagrange to solve the heat equation by separation of variables in his famous 1822 book Théorie analytique de la chaleur.[14] Sturm developed Fouriers ideas further and brought them to the attention of Cauchy, who combined them with his own ideas and arrived at ...
Lagranges clinical interest is in the treatment of women with epilepsy. It has been known for a few years that some of the medications used to treat epilepsy may increase the risk of having a child with congenital malformations. Unfortunately, these teratogenic drugs are also widely used for a number of other neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as migraines and bipolar disorder. Alarmingly, recent work has suggested that children exposed to a subset of these drugs in utero have reduced IQ later in life, and an increased incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism. Further animal work has suggested that these poor cognitive outcomes may involve subtle cortical malformation/laminar disruption, which are thought to be mediated by the GABA modulatory nature of these drugs. Lagranges lab is working to understand the role of specific GABA receptors in brain development and how these processes are regulated during normal development, as well as how they may be disrupted by ...

The calculus of variations may be said to begin with Newtons minimal resistance problem in 1687, followed by the brachistochrone curve problem raised by Johann Bernoulli (1696).[2] It immediately occupied the attention of Jakob Bernoulli and the Marquis de lHôpital, but Leonhard Euler first elaborated the subject, beginning in 1733. Lagrange was influenced by Eulers work to contribute significantly to the theory. After Euler saw the 1755 work of the 19-year-old Lagrange, Euler dropped his own partly geometric approach in favor of Lagranges purely analytic approach and renamed the subject the calculus of variations in his 1756 lecture Elementa Calculi Variationum.[3][4][Note 2] Legendre (1786) laid down a method, not entirely satisfactory, for the discrimination of maxima and minima. Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz also gave some early attention to the subject.[5] To this discrimination Vincenzo Brunacci (1810), Carl Friedrich Gauss (1829), Siméon Poisson (1831), Mikhail Ostrogradsky ...

From spy photos and our renderings of the 2022 Subaru BRZ, we can tell that the next-gen sports car will retain relatively the same shape. The majority of the changes are in the headlights; grille, which will have a honeycomb pattern; taillights; and there will be an integrated lip spoiler in back.. There have been many rumors about what will power the 2022 BRZ, but the consensus is that it will use a version of Subarus 2.4-liter flat-four. It could be either turbocharged to produce around 260 horsepower or naturally aspirated with around 217 horsepower. It should come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, and if it doesnt, lets just say well be disappointed. #SaveTheManuals. After months of speculation, well finally learn more about the next-gen car in the coming months. The 2022 Subaru BRZ should arrive in the U.S. sometime next year with a starting price around $30,000. ...
If youre still complaining about the Subaru BRZs lack of turbo, you probably dont quite understand how Subaru--with help from Toyota--developed this sports car. Inflation is the leading theory of the first instant of the universe. Inflation, which postulates that the universe underwent a period of rapid expansion an instant after its birth, provides convincing explanation for cosmological observations. Recent advancements in detector technology have opened opportunities to explore primordial gravitational waves generated by the inflation through B-mode (divergent-free) polarization pattern embedded in the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. If detected, these signals would provide strong evidence for inflation, point to the correct model for inflation, and open a window to physics at ultra-high energies. LiteBIRD is a satellite mission with a goal of detecting degree-and-larger-angular-scale B-mode polarization. LiteBIRD will observe at the second Lagrange point with a 400 mm diameter telescope and 2622 detectors. It will survey the entire sky with 15 frequency bands from 40 to 400 GHz to measure and subtract foregrounds. The US LiteBIRD team is ...
Up in the sky, the Fermi gamma-ray telescope is still alive and taking data. This year should bring an answer if the haze - a population of energetic electrons and positrons in the center of the galaxy that is difficult to account for by astrophysical sources - really exists. Moreover, Fermi is continuing its search for subhalos - small satellite galaxies made entirely of dark matter that may glow in gamma rays due to dark matter annihilation. Deeper in space, the Planck satellite is sitting at the Lagrange point L2 and making precise measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background since September last year. If all goes well we should have the first results this year, and we eagerly expect Plancks measurement of the CMB polarization that should greatly surpass in precision the polarization data of its predecessor WMAP. As usual, astrophysics will probably not bring a clear cut fundamental discovery, but may give us something to think about ...

Greetings everyone! I finally managed to put together complete system that will be used as a backbone of my new game. The game itself is supposed to be a mix of Kerbal Space Program and Space Engineers in 2d, maybe with some added influences from other games. Ill get back to this later, when gameplay is more fleshed out. Right now what the game needs is: orbital physics of planetary system, large deformable terrains with rigid body simulation and transitions between those two. tl;dr; There is a video. Orbital physics This part was relatively easy. I choose simulated n-body system over fixed orbits with patched conic approximation. Its simple to write and supports all phenomena like Lagrange points. My system uses Verlet integration with fixed time step (64s) for planets and adaptive time step for small entities (artificial satellites, asteroids). The only drawback here is that plotting trajectories requires to know positions of all planets ahead of time, so its best to evaluate whole system ...
We describe Halmaheramys bokimekot Fabre, Pagès, Musser, Fitriana, Semiadi & Helgen gen. et sp. nov., a new genus and species of murine rodent from the North Moluccas, and study its phylogenetic placement using both molecular and morphological data. We generated a densely sampled mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data set that included most genera of Indo-Pacific Murinae, and used probabilistic methodologies to infer their phylogenetic relationships. To reconstruct their biogeographical history, we first dated the topology and then used a Lagrange analysis to infer ancestral geographic areas. Finally, we combined the ancestral area reconstructions with temporal information to compare patterns of murine colonization among Indo-Pacific archipelagos. We provide a new and comprehensive molecular phylogenetic reconstruction for Indo-Pacific Murinae, with a focus on the Rattus division. Using previous results and those presented in this study, we define a new Indo-Pacific group within the Rattus ...

The aim of this paper is to provide a survey of the state of the art in the finite element approach to the Immersed Boundary Method (FE-IBM) which has been investigated by the authors during the last decade. In a unified setting, we present the different formulation proposed in our research and highlight the advantages of the one based on a distributed Lagrange multiplier (DLM-IBM) over the original FE-IBM.
