Name-based reporting of HIV-positive test results as a deterrent to testing. (1/40)

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated attitudes toward name-based reporting of HIV. METHODS: One hundred thirty high-risk, male repeat testers received information on the public health benefits of name-based reporting and reported their intentions to test. RESULTS: Of the 67 men who were randomly selected and asked their intentions before hearing the benefits, 63% said they would not test if reporting were required. After hearing the benefits, 19% changed their minds (P < .014). Of the 63 men who were asked only after hearing the benefits, 44% would not test. CONCLUSIONS: Implementing name-based reporting without working before-hand to change attitudes could undermine the benefits of both testing and HIV surveillance.  (+info)

The ethics of anonymized HIV testing of pregnant women: a reappraisal. (2/40)

Seroprevalence monitoring of HIV in pregnant women by anonymized unlinked testing has been widely adopted in the UK and other countries. The scientific rationale is to eliminate participation and selection bias. The ethical justification is that the public good outweighs any harm to individuals. The assumption has been that individuals have had their autonomy respected by the offer of informed consent. In the light of new scientific evidence, it is doubtful that the public good is best served by the continuation of anonymously testing women receiving antenatal care. It is submitted that it is no longer ethical for health professionals to refrain from informing pregnant women of the benefits of voluntary named testing, or to request their consent to anonymized testing. The legal and moral concept of duty of care is examined, and the abrogation of this duty through anonymization is explained.  (+info)

Comparison of deferral rates using a computerized versus written blood donor questionnaire: a randomized, cross-over study [ISRCTN84429599]. (3/40)

BACKGROUND: Self-administered computer-assisted blood donor screening strategies may elicit more accurate responses and improve the screening process. METHODS: Randomized crossover trial comparing responses to questions on a computerized hand-held tool (HealthQuiz, or HQ), to responses on the standard written instrument (Donor Health Assessment Questionnaire, or DHAQ). Randomly selected donors at 133 blood donation clinics in the area of Hamilton, Canada participated from 1995 to 1996. Donors were randomized to complete either the HQ or the DHAQ first, followed by the other instrument. In addition to responses of 'yes' and 'no' on both questionnaires, the HQ provided a response option of 'not sure'. The primary outcome was the number of additional donors deferred by the HQ. RESULTS: A total of 1239 donors participated. Seventy-one potential donors were deferred as a result of responses to the questionnaires; 56.3% (40/71) were deferred by the DHAQ, and an additional 43.7% (31/71) were deferred due to risks identified by the HQ but not by the DHAQ. Fourteen donors self-deferred; 11 indicated on the HQ that they should not donate blood on that day but did not use the confidential self-exclusion option on the DHAQ, and three used the self-exclusion option on the DHAQ but did not indicate that they should not donate blood on the HQ. The HQ identified a blood contact or risk factor for HIV/AIDS or sexually transmitted infection that was not identified by the DHAQ in 0.1% to 2.7% of donors. CONCLUSION: A self-administered computerized questionnaire may increase risk reporting by blood donors.  (+info)

Effects of anonymity, gender, and erotophilia on the quality of data obtained from self-reports of socially sensitive behaviors. (4/40)

This study examined the effects of anonymity, gender, and erotophilia on the quality of self-reports of socially sensitive health-related behaviors. A sample of 155 male and 203 female undergraduate students was randomly assigned to an anonymous and a confidential (i.e., nonanonymous) assessment condition. Gender, erotophilia, self-reports (of substance use, sexual behaviors, illegal activity), and perceived item threat were assessed by questionnaire. Data quality was strongly affected by experimental condition and gender. Thus, terminations were more frequent in the confidential condition and among women. In the confidential condition, women were significantly more likely to "prefer not to respond" to sensitive items compared to men. Both female gender and confidential condition were associated with lower frequency reports of sensitive health behaviors, and greater perceived threat of the assessment questions. Self-reported engagement in sensitive behaviors was positively related to both perceived question threat and erotophilia. Path analyses suggest that question threat mediates the effects of anonymity manipulations and gender on data quality (item refusal, termination), and that erotophilia mediates the effects of gender on incidence and frequency self-reports. The results indicate that anonymous assessments as well as male gender are associated with better data quality.  (+info)

Stored human tissue: an ethical perspective on the fate of anonymous, archival material. (5/40)

The furore over the retention of organs at postmortem examination, without adequate consent, has led to a reassessment of the justification for, and circumstances surrounding, the retention of any human material after postmortem examinations and operations. This brings into focus the large amount of human material stored in various archives and museums, much of which is not identifiable and was accumulated many years ago, under unknown circumstances. Such anonymous archival material could be disposed of, used for teaching, used for research, or remain in storage. We argue that there are no ethical grounds for disposing of the material, or for storing it in the absence of a teaching or research rationale. Nevertheless, with stringent safeguards, it can be used even in the absence of consent in research and teaching. Regulations are required to control the storage of all such human material, along the lines of regulations governing anatomy body bequests.  (+info)

Prevalence of HIV in workforces in southern Africa, 2000-2001. (6/40)

OBJECTIVES: Most data on HIV prevalence in low-risk populations in sub-Saharan Africa are drawn from sentinel surveys of pregnant women attending antenatal clinics and are not representative of formal sector workforces. We surveyed workforces in southern Africa to determine HIV prevalence among formally employed, largely male populations. METHODS: Voluntary, anonymous, unlinked seroprevalence surveys of 34 workforces with 44,000 employees were carried out in South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia in 2000-2001. Results were stratified to obtain estimates of prevalence by industrial sector, location, age, sex, and job level. RESULTS: Average HIV prevalence for the entire sample was 16.6% (95% CI: 16.3-17.0%). Country-wide prevalence was 14.5% (14.1-14.9%) in South Africa, 17.9% (17.1-18.7%) in Zambia, and 24.6% (23.6-25.7%) in Botswana. Among industrial sectors, mining (18.0%, 17.6-18.5%) and metal processing (17.3%, 15.9-18.7%) had the highest infection rates. Males, who comprised 85% of participants of known sex, were more likely (16.3%, 15.3-17.4%) to be infected than were females (10.7%, 8.7-12.7%). Contract (23%, 21.9-24.1%), unskilled (18.3%, 17.5-19.1%), and semi-skilled workers (18.7%, 18.1-19.4%) were much more likely to be infected than were skilled workers (10.5%, 9.5-11.4%) and managers (4.5%, 3.4-5.6%). Participation in the surveys averaged 63% of eligible employees. CONCLUSIONS: HIV prevalence among formally employed workers in southern Africa shows different patterns than among antenatal clinic attendees. Anonymous workplace surveys generate prevalence estimates for demographic groups that are not represented in antenatal surveys and can strengthen support for prevention and treatment interventions.  (+info)

Precise definition of anonymization in genetic polymorphism studies. (7/40)

Anonymization is an essential tool to protect privacy of participants in epidemiological studies. This paper classifies types of anonymization in genetic polymorphism studies, providing precise definitions. They are: 1) unlinkable anonymization at enrollment without a participant list; 2) unlinkable anonymization before genotyping with a participant list; 3) linkable anonymization; 4) unlinkable anonymization for outsiders; and 5) linkable anonymization for outsiders. The classification in view of accessibility to a table including genotype data with directly identifiable data such as names is important; if such tables exist, staff may obtain genotype information about participants. The first three modes are defined here as anonymization unaccessible to genotype data with directly identifiable information for research staff. Anonymization with a key code held by participants is possible with any of the above anonymization modes, by which participants can access to their own genotypes through telephone or internet. A guideline issued on March 29, 2001 with collaboration of three Ministries in Japan defines "anonymization in a linkable fashion" and "anonymization in an unlinkable fashion", "for the purpose of preventing the personal information from being divulged externally in violation of law, the present guidelines or a research protocol", but the contents are not clear in practice. The proposed definitions will be useful when we describe and discuss the preferable mode of anonymization for a given polymorphism study.  (+info)

Ethics and ethics committees: HIV serosurveillance in Scotland. (8/40)

Knowledge of the heterosexual spread of HIV is needed to plan future health-care needs. In December 1989 we gained approval and finance for unlinked anonymous testing of neonatal Guthrie card samples in Scotland. Local ethics committee approval was required before testing could start. Twenty ethics committees were approached in the 15 Scottish health board areas. Nineteen of the committees have agreed, representing 99.6 per cent of births in Scotland. Our method of contacting ethics committees is discussed, as are the points raised.  (+info)

Social graphs derived from online social interactions contain a wealth of information that is nowadays extensively used by both industry and academia. However, as social graphs contain sensitive information, they need to be properly anonymized before release. Most of the existing graph anonymization mechanisms rely on the perturbation of the original graphs edge set. In this paper, we identify a fundamental weakness of these mechanisms: They neglect the strong structural proximity between friends in social graphs, thus add implausible fake edges for anonymization. To exploit this weakness, we first propose a metric to quantify an edges plausibility by relying on graph embedding. Extensive experiments on three real-life social network datasets demonstrate that our plausibility metric can very effectively differentiate fake edges from original edges with AUC (area under the ROC curve) values above 0.95 in most of the cases. We then rely on a Gaussian mixture model to automatically derive the ...
Conventional data uses anonymity techniques to hide personal information that can cause side link attacks. Anonymization methods, based on k-anonymity, have been widely employed for such purposes [1]. These methods fall into two broad categories. The first category constitutes of techniques that generalize data from the bottom of the taxonomy tree towards its top and are referred to as the bottom-up generalization (BUG) [2]. The second one is based on walking through the taxonomy tree from the top towards the bottom, known as the top-down specialization (TDS) [3]. However, traditional anonymization methods lack scalability and cannot, in general, cope with large sizes of data, as their performance degrades. Hence, a need for scaling up of the conventional methods is essential. Scaling up the conventional methods has resulted in several amendments to these fundamental techniques, including parallel BUG [4], hybrid BUG and TDS [5], and two-phase TDS [6].. All k-anonymity methods identify a set of ...
Guest Blogger and good friend T. Mark Bartley has graciously offered to share some of his deep insights into the problem of pain, suffering and how to use a urinal. Thanks Mark!. Henry David Thoreau said "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them." Why? Because men will not ask directions! Moses walked around in the desert for forty years and some have theorized that it could have been for this very reason. I am no different. I fell, broke my back and was taken to the hospital for my first overnight stay- at age forty six. Then a nurse handed me a urinal. She may have asked me if I knew how to use one- but it would not have mattered, I am a guy. I would have confidently assured her, "oh, sure". Men think things like: "I have seen one before and I mean, how hard could this be? I am a man and I know how to pee- I can even write my name in the snow, at least my initials! It has a lid, etc- no problem-". Ten stressful days later I realized that I had ...

Microbiome research encompasses sample types as diverse as the human gut, Antarctic soil, ocean water and acidic hot spring biofilms. These samples are challenging because they are difficult to lyse, with some microbes containing a tough extracellular matrix. Incomplete lysis of a microbial community results in an inaccurate representation of the microbial content of the sample. Additionally, PCR inhibitors present in these samples, especially humic acids, polysaccharides, polyphenolics, lipids and heavy metals, result in inaccurate quantitation of nucleic acids and may cause false negatives in qPCR. ...

The Ananas Bar and Brasserie said the bright red-lipped urinals shaped like an open mouth were "a commonly used European design piece from female Dutch artist Meike van Schijndel".. "We sincerely apologise if they have caused offence. They are being removed today," a spokeswoman said in a statement.. The stylish restaurant opened three weeks ago, with the Sydney Morning Heralds food reviewer describing the urinals as "no real surprise here at Ananas, merely adding to the extraordinary collision of statements and intent".. But feminist, former political adviser and writer Anne Summers said the design was offensive. "Misogyny is very widespread, and this is just an example of misogyny," said Summers.. "The concept is pretty challenging and confronting. Theyre asking men to put their d(expletive) in these mouths as urinals.". ...
No, we arent talking about women who want to stand to go pee. Were talking about urinals in womens bathrooms that are carryovers from a time when men dominated society. Im ashamed to admit I was not aware of this, but turns out that at many prominent educational institutions, there are urinals in the womens bathrooms just because nobody can be bothered to remove them - Im talking Stanford, Hardvard, Princeton.. Hows that for making women feel like second class citizens? When it comes to a place like Stanford (and I should know, Ive been here since 98), the argument that "we dont have the money" just doesnt hold water. More like "we dont have the concern for women".. Check out the article, the author and I see eye to eye on this one. (via Fark). PS: We want pictures people!. ...

Medical researchers have long known that many serious diseases-including heart disease, asthma, and many forms of cancer-are hereditary. Until fairly recently, however, there was no easy way to identify the particular genes that are associated with a given malady. Now, researchers can conduct genome-wide association studies-by sequencing the DNA of human subjects-enabling them to statistically correlate specific genes to particular diseases.. In order to study the genetics of a particular disease, researchers need a large sample of people who have the disorder, which means that some these people are likely to be related to one another-even if its a distant relationship. This skews research results because certain positive associations between specific genes and the disease are false positives-the result of two people sharing a common ancestor. In other words, the research sample is not truly random, and researchers must statistically correct for the "confounding" that was caused by the shared ...

A while back I posted an article about a urinal which doubles as a video game, and this invention was actually well received, even though I still dont understand the allure. But this concept design for an e-Urinal really makes sense to me--a unit which is able to scan your urine and report possible health issues to you while you wait. And, while this particular model may still be in the conceptual stage of development, I can see this kind of thing catching on and changing the way our health issues are d...

This last one proved troublesome because, alas, I dont have a 9 inch dick…its 13. And its hard because my lower back hurts, and Im always tripping over it, and I have to stand on a step stool when I use the urinal so that it doesnt fall into the water and, alright, fine. I have an average sized dick. And this might not be a problem for everyone, but for the crazily insecure perfectionist that I was in my youth, it certainly was.. Perfectionist may seem like a strange word to use, so let me elaborate. I was OBSESSED with being amazing at everything I did from the first time I tried it. What this meant was that if I was good at something right away, I would stick with it, and if I thought I was going to be bad at something, I wouldnt even try it. Fortunately, I was naturally talented at a few things, or else I imagine I wouldve spent my days locked in my room, rocking back and forth in the fetal position afraid of failing.. For sex, this meant that I had already decided I could never be ...
WASHINGTON — If adopted, the Restroom Gender Parity in Federal Buildings Act (H.R. 4869) would require any federal building constructed for public use to have a 1:1 ratio for toilets and including urinals in womens and mens restrooms.
MsCaroline has no idea which, if any of these are true - her family, like most expats, flushes, and has had no problems. However, after almost 3 years back in Asia, she has seen any number of toilet arrangements throughout the region: squat toilets, toilets that include buckets of water next to them for manual flushing, toilets with no paper anywhere around them, toilets with overflowing paper bins (her least favorite) toilets with no doors, unisex toilets where one casually strolls past the gent standing at the urinal on ones way into the stall, toilets with hoses lying on the ground (presumably for both flushing and cleaning oneself.) On the other side of the coin, some of the public toilets she has run across in Asia are more luxurious than anything she will ever have in her home, and include things like automated air fresheners, privacy bells (masking sounds for the timid,) bidets, heated seats (not unlike the "Ass-blaster 9000" in the Asia Vus first apartment), and lovely family ...

Another question arises and that is, why did the Wakefield camp wait until nearly a year, when the statute of limitations for libel was up if the BMJ series about him was so damaging and defamatory? The first BMJ report on Wakefield was published 5 January 2011 and Wakefield filed suit on 3 January 2012. Wakefield has unsuccessfully sued Deer in the UK and was Wakefields undoing actually because the discovery provided Mr. Deer with the childrens anonymised medical records. A formidable hurdle for Wakefield to clear in his latest debacle is Texas Anti-SLAPP law which not only may not allow him to present his case to a jury but leaves him vulnerable to court, legal and punitive costs owed to Brian Deer and Fiona Godlee (editor of the BMJ). Of course this will be interesting to see how it plays out in the end but I dont think it will end well for Dr. Wakefield, although that may be what he intends ...

Dear Cecil:. I conducted due diligence at your Web site, but found no reference to a delicate but vital question that has been nagging me for some time now. Can you please tell me whether it is more sanitary to aim directly for the back wall of a urinal or to splash into the water? Which minimizes splashback? Do urinal designers consider this in the same way that, say, auto designers use wind tunnels to minimize air resistance? This question takes on heightened urgency when I visit guests homes and the issue of auditory embarrassment is considered.. - Mathias Dubilier, Burlington, Vermont. Cecil replies:. Certain parties, and theyre not all necessarily female parties, are now rolling their eyes and making eww-ick noises, the wusses. Im sorry, but there are things the world needs to know. Well call this discussion Men Are Pigs, Part Two.. Men Are Pigs, Part One, which surely few have forgotten, dealt with the question of why toilet seats in public restrooms are U-shaped. In 1951, at the age of 31, Lacks visited Baltimores Johns Hopkins Hospital, which served black patients in segregated wards during the Jim Crow era, so doctors could find out what was causing pain in her lower stomach. It turned out there was a cancerous tumor that had grown at a terrifying rate on her cervix.. At the time, cervical cancer was prevalent among women and research samples were taken from those who were diagnosed with it. Richard Telinde, a doctor at Hopkins who led a research study on patients who tested positive, hoped to grow living samples from both normal and infected cells to better understand the cancer. He worked with his colleague Dr. George Gey, the head of tissue culture research at Hopkins, who was relentlessly determined to develop the first line of immortal human cells ― those that could repeatedly replicate themselves outside of the body without ever dying.. Soon after her first trip to the hospital, the excruciating pain Lacks felt began to worsen as her tumor ...

Novaquatis Novaquatis investigates the possibilities of urine source separation for improved wastewater management better water pollution control with respect to nutrients and micro-pollutants and the possibility of closing the nutrient cycles NOVA 2-2: Precipitation in urine conducting pipes and storage tanks (Dr. Tove Larsen, Dr. des. Kai Udert) NOVA 2-2 consists of a PhD thesis, which closely investigated precipitation in urine-collecting toilets, waterless urinals, and conventional urinals with field measurements, lab-scale experiments, and computer modeling. The PhD thesis was completed in 2002. The main crystalline compounds of precipitates from urine are struvite, hydroxyapatite, and calcite; the composition depending on the dilution with flushing water. Struvite is the main compound at low dilution, while calcite dominates at high dilution (Udert et al. 2003c, d). A high fraction of phosphate is incorporated into the precipitates. Dilution with tap water increases this fraction by ...
It seems that these flies bravely serve as targets for male homo sapiens to aim at. My theory, (which is, of course, thin on one end, much much thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the far end) is that urinals desire to maximize their resource input from said men and are willing to share some of their bounty with the fly to improve their overall target performance. This role used to be provided solely by the urinal cakes which will undoubtedly need to evolve further to stay fit in this new ecosystem. ...
Of the initially HIV-negative employees in the standard and intensive VCT arms, 95.4% and 93.2% respectively were still in employment and consented to anonymous HIV testing at the end of the intervention. Loss to follow-up before the second HIV test was 30.3% in the standard VCT arm and 32.2% in the intensive VCT arm. Mean VCT uptake during the previous two years was 70.7% in the intensive arm and 5.2% in the standard arm (p,0.001). In the standard VCT arm, 17.1% of participants accepted pre-test counseling and a voucher, but did not complete testing. Sixty-one sero-converters were identified during 5,022 person-years follow-up (PYFU; crude HIV incidence 1.21 per 100 PYFU; 95% CI: 0.92-1.64). HIV incidence was higher in the intensive VCT arm (mean per-site HIV incidence 1.37 per 100 PYFU) than in the standard VCT arm (mean per-site HIV incidence 0.95 per 100 PYFU), but the difference was not significant (unadjusted relative risk 1.44; 95% CI: 0.77-2.71). Users who are unfamiliar with bidets often confuse a bidet with a urinal, toilet, or even a drinking fountain. It is generally understood that the user should sit on a bidet facing the tap and nozzle for washing the genitalia, and should sit with back to the tap and wall when washing the anus and buttocks. For a thorough cleaning, the user should use a hand to scrub the area with soap after wetting, then rinse. A dedicated towel or wipe is often available for drying ...

A low, moaning sort of sound cut Percy off in mid-stream. He looked around, saw nothing. Percy strained at the urinal, staring at the wall. The sound returned, sliding along the tiles, echoing off the porcelain, spiraling into a guttural, animalistic quaver that made his neck hairs stand on end. Percy wheeled about, eyes wide, searching the darkness. There, barely discernible in the corner, was a shadowy figure, hunkered down, squatting atop a toilet like a perched bird poised to lay an egg, one foot on each side of the rim. Percy strained to see. The figure appeared to be staring upward, as though lost in a trance. As Percy watched, a long, horrible groan escaped from the figures lips, a cry of anguish so wrenching that it seemed torn from his very soul. At that moment an orderly opened a door across the hall and a shaft of light fell through a bathroom window, across the tile floor, and fully illuminated the corner for an awful instant. The horrific scene revealed to Percy would be forever ...

ISO 45001 was proposed at the ISO in October 2013. The committee ISO/PC 283, created in 2013, had direct responsibility for the standardization process.[6] At least 70 countries contributed to the drafting process.[7] Preparation and committee work lasted until December 2015. From 2015 to 2017, a first draft failed to gain sufficient approval from ISO members and was revised in a second draft, which was approved and refined into a final draft.[6] In the final vote the standard garnered 62 votes in favour, nine abstentions and four votes against from France, India, Spain, and Turkey.[8] The standard was published on 12 March 2018.[6] ...

The background of this is as follows: In general, the Federal Administrative Court passes a judgment after a hearing and a deliberation. At that point in time, there is a ruling, the operative part of the judgment (so-called Tenor), but the text of the reasons for the ruling is not available yet. The written reasons will only be drawn up, a vote on them will be taken by the Senate, and they will be signed after the passing. Then the judgment will be delivered to all parties involved in the proceedings, anonymised and published.. ...
... 1. What is the structure of the Euromacs Database?. The Euromacs database is patient oriented. The database consists of two major parts: First implant and Follow-up:First implant-Investigations and assessments prior to implant (echo, hemodynamics, medication, swan ganz, laboratory data, etc.)-Implantation data-Investigations and assessments at dischargeFollow-up- Routine Follow-up (investigations and assessments) - Follow-up event includes:-Major and minor events-Weaning-Transplantation-Pump Exchange-Explantation of deceased patient. 2. What does pseudonymisation mean for my work with the Euromacs registry?. Euromacs uses pseudonymised data. In fact anonymised data would have been preferred, in order not to reveal the identity of the patient. For statistical and scientific reasons the registry needs to know some data which refer to a specific patient. These data are: date of birth and/or date of death, gender, ABO, date of implantation and hospital of implantation. In order to ...
In this webinar, Dr. Barry Mangum from Paidion Research and Dr. JF Marier from Certara discussed how pediatric considerations fit into the overall drug development program. They also made recommendations for addressing issues from both a practical and scientific perspective. Anonymized case studies were presented with a review of historical issues with a focus on solutions for today (ie, licensed comparators differences in US and EU, importation issues, and endpoint selection).. ...
Through monthly prevalence surveys conducted over 13 months, we assessed the heels of 520 patients who met the above criteria, finding 38 with heel pressure ulcers for a prevalence rate of 7.3 percent. One hundred of these 520 patients who consented and underwent a minimum of two heel ultrasounds at two-day intervals after the prevalence study made up the research sample. Scans were interpreted as normal, borderline, or abnormal. Ten (10.1 percent) of the 100 patients had normal ultrasound scans of both heels at baseline. The majority of scans were not normal. Eighteen (18.2 percent) patients had abnormal scans of both heels and 23 (23.2 percent) had an abnormal and borderline scan. Not enough visible pressure ulcers developed in the research population to answer the third question. A statistical correlation did not exist between abnormal scans and length of hospital stay or other associated factors, however the Braden friction/shear score showed a statistically significant relationship to ...

Development of sensitive and reproducible assays for clinical and life science research of C. trachomatis is essential to monitor and help prevent further spread of this pathogen. DNA was purified from 130 urine research samples using a fully automated protocol on the BioRobot® M48 workstation together with the MagAttract® DNA Mini M48 Kit. Purified DNA performed well in a real-time PCR assay being developed for the amplification of Chlamydia trachomatis DNA. Comparison of this easy-to-use proce
Literature indicates that point mutations in codon 12 of the Ki-ras2 gene are associated with colon cancer. The detection of a point mutation in the high background of wild-type cells is very difficult, which represents a problem for many research projects focused on processes that take place during cancerogenesis. Therefore, a quick and easy, yet reliable method of detecting single point mutations is preferred. This article shows an application example for Peptide Nucleic Acid (PNA) oligomers in combination with Hybridization Probes on the LightCycler Instrument. Here, PNAs suppress the codon 12 wild-type PCR product, as they bind to nucleic acids with higher stringency, compared to deoxyribonucleotides, and do not serve as primers for Taq polymerase. Due to these properties, PNAs can be used to detect single point mutations in research samples in a high background of wild-type sequences.. ...

I was charged with dwi and Ive been going to treatment clinic for a 9-month program where they regularly take urinal samples for drug testing. I completed 8 months already, all tests were negative until last week. I was tested positive for opiates and I couldnt find explanation to it. To be honest I didnt know what it was before. On the day of my test I did eat poppy bagel around noon, and I did have some poppy cake over the weekend. I eat poppy bagels 2-3 times a week. I also drink tonic water from time to time(I just checked that it is with quinine) and energy drinks (monster and redbull). Im pretty sure I drank tonic water night or two before the day they took urinal sample. Could tonic water and poppy bagels could be the reason for positive? They said they would retest the same urine sample..I told them about poppy bagel and they were skeptical, I havent told them about tonic water, which I think could be the true cause. I do take painkillers for headache sometimes, when I dont get ...
Today I am walking to work already in a good mood. I had a good date the night before and although I didnt get laid as planned, I did have a wonderful time. I am still sipping the coffee from the meditation moment of the day and walking into work. One block before I get to the bar, I notice a little pebble of what looks like human shit. While disgusted, I am not that astonished and keep walking. Once at the bar, everything seems as it always is. I am ready for a good day. I keep telling myself that it can only get better. I go to the restroom before I clock in. Once in the there, while waiting for a free urinal, I watch a drunken man trying to aim into the large urinal only to hit his feet and the feet of two other men near him who dont notice. This, I dont blame him for, because I too have the same issue sometimes even when sober. Once done, he hiccups, burps and starts the difficult mission of trying zip his fly. This fly zipping takes the drunken sap another 4 minutes because while he is ...

What is curious about Allreds embracing of this law is that it is overtly sexist. The law suggests that a woman who is viewed as unchaste is so harmed that she constitutes a crime victim. Chastity is defined by Websters as "(a) : abstention from unlawful sexual intercourse; (b) : abstention from all sexual intercourse." The law is based on the out-dated notion that a woman who has sex before marriage is damaged and subject to social stigma. To put it more colloquially, such a woman was viewed as a "slut or prostitute." That is precisely the outrageous view voiced by Limbaugh in relation to Fluke and led to a worldwide condemnation. Now, Allred wants him prosecuted under a law that assumes that is based on the same assumption. The law was not designed to prevent women from being called sluts. Laws like Floridas code provision were designed on the belief that a woman who is unchaste is a slut - and that "good" women should never be accused of sex before marriage. So Allred wants Limbaugh ...
Downloadable! Electoral institutions that encourage citizens to vote are widely used around the world. Yet little is known about the effects of such institutions on voter participation and the composition of the electorate. In this paper, I combine a field experiment with a change in Peruvian voting laws to identify the effect of monetary (dis-)incentives on voting. Using the random variation in the fine for abstention and an objective measure of turnout at the individual level, I estimate the elasticity of voting with respect to cost to be -0.21. Consistent with the theoretical model presented, the reduction in turnout induced by the reduction in the fine is driven by voters who (i) are in the center of the political spectrum, (ii) are less interested in politics, and (iii) hold less political information. However, voters who respond to changes in the cost of abstention do not have different preferences for policies than those who vote regardless of the cost. Further, involvement in politics, as
The electronic system is a black box. I develop software myself but you dont have to do it to know that. There is basically no way you can test it and be sure UNLESS you verify a large amount of ballots with paper trail and not the ones the government lets you check and then only for each occassion in which a thorough recount of paper ballots is done under that condition. Thing is: the paper trail does not work. Dont you believe me? I sent you a link where you can see the governor of a state tearing to pieces the paper ballot and voting again because the paper ballot was wrong and that was an officialist. Oppos who tried to do that were thrown to jail for destroying electoral material, but big officialist honchos could revote until the paper trail gave them the right answer. Hello? Hugos dad also tried to vote and several times the machine produced the wrong vote ...

N2 - The Neighborhood Voice is a vehicle customized for conducting health research in community settings. It brings research studies into neighborhoods affected most by health disparities and reaches groups often underrepresented in research samples. This paper reports on the experience and satisfaction of 599 African American women who participated in research on board the Neighborhood Voice. Using bivariate, psychometric, and logistic regression analyses, we examined responses to a brief post-research survey. Most women (71%) reported that they had never previously participated in research, and two-thirds (68%) rated their Neighborhood Voice experience as excellent. Satisfaction scores were ...
BACKGROUND: Since 1991, unlinked anonymous HIV testing of homosexual/bisexual males attending genitourinary clinics in Edinburgh and Glasgow has been conducted and resulting prevalence data have been published annually. More detailed information which provides an understanding of what proportion of HIV infected men attending genitourinary clinics in central Scotland (i) remain undetected, (ii) acquire sexually transmitted infections following HIV diagnosis, and (iii) possibly become HIV infected either abroad or following sex with someone from abroad, is reported by the authors. METHODS: Unlinked anonymous HIV testing of syphilis serology specimens from homosexual/bisexual males attending genitourinary clinics during 1991-5. RESULTS: Of 3468 specimens tested, 165 (4.8%) were HIV positive. Thirty five per cent (57) of all HIV positive specimens were from men whose infection remained undetected following clinic attendance. Of the 80 attenders who knew themselves to be HIV positive before their ...
Background: This study was carried out among undergraduate students at the University of Tuzla (Bosna and Herzegovina) with the objective of examining gender differences in the body mass index (BMI) and the level of Physical Activity (PA) among respondents. Material/Methods: This study was conducted to: determine the body mass index (BMI) and the average weekly number of hours of sport activity in the last six months (PA). A research sample was made of female students (n = 330) in the chronological age of 19.3+1.5 yrs, 60.7%, and of male students (n = 213) in the chronological age of 20.0+1.8 yrs, 39.2%. Results: On average, the students (both female and male) spend 5.60 (5.03) hours on physical activity per week. Female students spend 4.05 (4.32) hours, while male students dedicate 8.11 (5.30) hours to physical activities. It can be concluded that in principle the students practice physical activities and recreation, but still 1/5 of all students are inactive. The obtained results for the BMI ...
Ben Seisler, a Boston lawyer, was a sperm donor while he was in law school. He was shocked to discover that he is the biological father of more than 70 kids. He learned this because he is registered on an online registry called the Donor Sibling Registry which matches children conceived by sperm donors with their biological fathers and half-siblings. Based on his calculations,
Consent forms are the principal method for obtaining informed consent from biomedical research participants. The significance of these forms is increasing as more secondary research is undertaken on existing research samples and information, and samples are deposited in biobanks accessible to many researchers. We reviewed a selection of consent forms used in European Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) and identified four common elements that were found in every consent form. Our analysis showed that only two of the four most commonly found elements in our sample of informed consent forms were required in UK law. This raises questions about what should be put in informed consent forms for research participants. These findings could be beneficial for the formulation of participant information and consent documentation in the future studies.
