A state of social disorganization and demoralization in society which is largely the result of disharmony between cultural goals and the means for attaining them. This may be reflected in the behavior of the individual in many ways - non-conformity, social withdrawal, deviant behavior, etc.

Building momentum: an ethnographic study of inner-city redevelopment. (1/28)

OBJECTIVES: One factor contributing to the decay of inner-city areas, and to consequent excess mortality, is the massive loss of housing. This report studied the effects of a redevelopment project on social functioning in an inner-city community. METHODS: This ethnographic study included the following elements: a longitudinal study of 10 families living in renovated housing, repeated observations and photographing of the street scene, focus groups, and informal interviews with area residents. The project was located in the Bradhurst section of Harlem in New York City and was focused on a redevelopment effort sponsored by local congregations. RESULTS: Those who were able to move into newly renovated housing found that their living conditions were greatly improved. Neighborhood revitalization lagged behind the rehabilitation of individual apartment houses. This uneven redevelopment was a visual and sensory reminder of "what had been." Residents missed the warmth and social support that existed in Harlem before its decline. CONCLUSIONS: Rebuilding damaged housing contributes greatly to the well-being of inner-city residents. The current pace and scope of rebuilding are insufficient to restore lost vitality.  (+info)

Auditory affective agnosia. Disturbed comprehension of affective speech. (2/28)

Hughlings Jackson noted that, although some aphasic patients were unable to use propositional speech, affective speech appeared to be spared. The purpose of this experiment was to study patients with unilateral hemispheric disease in order to ascertain if there are hemispheric asymmetries in the comprehension of affective speech. Six subjects had right temporoparietal lesions (left unilateral neglect) and six subjects had left temporoparietal lesions (fluent aphasias). These subjects were presented with 32 tape recorded sentences. In 16 trials the patients were asked to judge the emotional mood of the speaker (happy, sad, angry, indifferent) and in 16 trials the patients were asked to judge the content. Line drawings containing facial expressions of the four emotions or line drawings corresponding with the four basic contents were displayed with each sentence and the patient responded by pointing. All 12 subjects made perfect scores on the content portion of the test. On the emotional portion the right hemispheric patients scored a mean of 4-17 and the left hemispheric group scored a mean 10-17. The difference between these means is significantly (P less than 0-01) and suggests that patients with right hemispheric dysfunction and neglect have a defect in the comprehension of affective speech.  (+info)

Root shock: the consequences of African American dispossession. (3/28)

Urban renewal was one of several processes that contributed to deurbanization of American cities in the second half of the 20th century. Urban renewal was an important federal policy that affected thousands of communities in hundreds of cities. Urban renewal was to achieve "clearance" of "blight" and "slum" areas so that they could be rebuilt for new uses other than housing the poor. Urban renewal programs fell disproportionately on African American communities, leading to the slogan "Urban renewal is Negro removal." The short-term consequences were dire, including loss of money, loss of social organization, and psychological trauma. The long-term consequences flow from the social paralysis of dispossession, most important, a collapse of political action. This has important implications for the well-being of African Americans. It also raises important questions about the strength and quality of American democracy.  (+info)

Double dissociation of social functioning in frontotemporal dementia. (4/28)

BACKGROUND: Efforts to characterize changes in social functioning in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) have failed to elicit clear dissociation between frontal and temporal variants of the disease based on behavioral measures. METHODS: This study obtained premorbid and current first-degree relative ratings using an established measure of interpersonal functioning, the Interpersonal Adjectives Scales, to measure personality change in 16 patients with frontal variant (FLV) and 13 with temporal variant (TLV) FTD, and in a control group of 16 patients with AD. RESULTS: All three groups showed significant change over time in multiple domains, including increased introversion (FG) and submissiveness (HI). However, patients with both FTD subtypes evidenced significantly greater increases in overall interpersonal pathology vector length [VL] than did patients with AD, who remained within the normal range on all scores. Patients with FLV showed a 2 SD increase in submissiveness (HI), but their cold-heartedness (DE) change scores were not significantly different from those of patients with AD. Conversely, the TLV cold-heartedness (DE) score increased 2 SD compared to minimal change for the AD and FLV groups, yet change in submissiveness (HI) did not differentiate between AD and TLV groups. CONCLUSIONS: The Interpersonal Adjectives Scales differentiated both FTD groups from patients with AD on the basis of both degree and direction of personality change. Also, the two subtypes of FTD showed distinctly different patterns of change in social functioning: patients with temporal variant shifted toward severe interpersonal coldness with mild loss of dominance, whereas patients with frontal variant showed the opposite pattern.  (+info)

Electrophysiological insights into conceptual disorganization in schizophrenia. (5/28)

Disorganized speech, or thought disorder, in schizophrenia may reflect abnormal processing of meaningful concepts. To examine whether schizophrenia involves abnormalities in how a meaningful context influences processing of concepts strongly, weakly, or not related to it, we used the N400, an event-related brain potential (ERP) index of semantic relatedness. ERPs were recorded from schizophrenia patients (n=18) and normal controls (n=18) while they viewed category definitions (e.g., a type of fruit), each followed by a target word that was either a high-typicality category exemplar (apple), low-typicality exemplar (cherry), or non-exemplar (clamp). Participants' task was to indicate via button-press whether or not the target belonged to the category. In both patients and controls, N400 amplitude was largest (most negative) for non-exemplars, intermediate for low-typicality exemplars, and smallest (least negative) for high-typicality exemplars. Compared to controls, patients showed a trend toward reduced N400 amplitude differences between non-exemplars and low-typicality exemplars. Most importantly, within patients, reduced N400 amplitude differences between high- and low-typicality exemplars were correlated with psychotic symptoms. This association of an N400 index of semantic processing with psychotic symptoms suggests that psychosis in schizophrenia may be associated with greater similarity in how concepts strongly and weakly meaningfully related to their context are processed.  (+info)

A heuristic indication and warning staging model for detection and assessment of biological events. (6/28)

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents a model designed to enable rapid detection and assessment of biological threats that may require swift intervention by the international public health community. DESIGN: We utilized Strauss' grounded theory to develop an expanded model of social disruption due to biological events based on retrospective and prospective case studies. We then applied this model to the temporal domain and propose a heuristic staging model, the Wilson-Collmann Scale for assessing biological event evolution. MEASUREMENTS: We retrospectively and manually examined hard copy archival local media reports in the native vernacular for three biological events associated with substantial social disruption. The model was then tested prospectively through media harvesting based on keywords corresponding to the model parameters. RESULTS: Our heuristic staging model provides valuable information about the features of a biological event that can be used to determine the level of concern warranted, such as whether the pathogen in question is responding to established public health disease control measures, including the use of antimicrobials or vaccines; whether the public health and medical infrastructure of the country involved is adequate to mount the necessary response; whether the country's officials are providing an appropriate level of information to international public health authorities; and whether the event poses a international threat. The approach is applicable for monitoring open-source (public-domain) media for indications and warnings of such events, and specifically for markers of the social disruption that commonly occur as these events unfold. These indications and warnings can then be used as the basis for staging the biological threat in the same manner that the United States National Weather Service currently uses storm warning models (such as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale) to detect and assess threatening weather conditions. CONCLUSION: Used as a complement to current epidemiological surveillance methods, our approach could aid global public health officials and national political leaders in responding to biological threats of international public health significance.  (+info)

Developmental trajectories of substance use from early to late adolescence: a comparison of rural and urban youth. (8/28)

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated differences in the development of heavy drinking and marijuana use among students in urban and rural areas and assessed whether any such differences can be accounted for by locality differences in racial/ethnic makeup, social disorganization/low social bonding, feelings of despondency and escapism, and the availability of drugs. METHOD: Drawn from 62 South Dakota middle schools involved in a drug prevention field trial, participating students were assigned to a locality category based on the location of their seventh-grade school. Schools in metropolitan areas were distinguished from schools in nonmetropolitan areas. Schools in nonmetropolitan areas were further distinguished into those in micropolitan (medium and large towns) and noncore (rural areas without towns and with small towns) areas. We used latent growth curve analysis to model the influence of locality on the development of heavy drinking and marijuana use from ages 13 to 19 and to determine whether differences in development across locality were attributable to location-based differences in race/ethnicity, social disorganization/bonding, feelings of despondency and escapism, and alcohol and marijuana availability. RESULTS: Heavy drinking increased at a faster rate among youth living in micropolitan areas compared with youth living in metropolitan areas. Marijuana use increased at a faster rate among youth living in metropolitan and micropolitan areas compared with youth living in noncore areas. Differences in the rate of change in heavy drinking were attributable to differences in the racial/ethnic composition of metropolitan and micropolitan areas. Differences in the rate of change in marijuana use were attributable to differences in residential instability and marijuana availability. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the diversity of drug use within rural communities, suggesting that living in a very rural area is protective against some forms of drug use but that living in a rural area that includes a medium or large town is not.  (+info)

Social disorganization theory is one of the most enduring place-based theories of crime. Developed by Clifford Shaw and Henry McKay, this theory shifted criminological scholarship from a focus on the pathology of people to the pathology of places. Shaw and McKay demonstrated that delinquency did not randomly occur throughout the city but was concentrated in disadvantaged neighborhoods in-or adjacent to-areas of industry or commerce. These impoverished neighborhoods were in a constant state of transition, experiencing high rates of residential mobility. They were also home to newly arrived immigrants and African Americans. In these areas children were exposed to criminogenic behavior and residents were unable to develop important social relationships necessary for the informal regulation of crime and disorder. Social disorganization theory held a distinguished position in criminological research for the first half of the 20th century. Although the theory lost some of its prestige during the 1960s ...

The Chicago Area Project was a practical attempt by sociologists to apply their theories in a city laboratory. Subsequent research showed that the youth athletic leagues, recreation programs, and summer camp worked best along with urban planning and alternatives to incarceration as crime control policy. Such programs are non-entrepreneurial and non-self-sustaining, and they fail when local or central government does not make a sustained financial commitment to them. Although with hindsight, the schools attempts to map crime may have produced some distortions, the work was valuable in that it moved away from a study of pattern and place toward a study of function and scale. To that extent, this was work of high quality that represented the best science available to the researchers at the time. The Social Disorganization Theory itself was a landmark concept and, as it focuses on the absence or breakdown of social control mechanisms, there are obvious links with social control theory. This article addresses the question of the structure of local child welfare activities in light of community-level factors. It poses the following research questions: how are different community-level factors related to child welfare client structures in communities and what is the extent to which these factors explain structural differences? The applied theoretical framework is based on social disorganization and strain theories as well as human developmental approach. The data has been collected from two Finnish national databases and it consists of variables containing 257 Finnish municipalities. The method of analysis is multinomial logistic regression. The results suggest that the local child welfare structures are tied to social disorganization, policing and culture as well as to the intensity of control in the communities. In general, the more fragile the communal structures, the more last-resort child welfare there is in the community. Combining fragile communal structures with weak ...
In the discussion on values Levin once again appeals to the environment to explain the strong individual dominance drive among Africans (p. 140) and a supposedly cooperative and democratic European temperament. Levin writes, Recall the hypothesis that conditions in northern Eurasia strongly favored cooperation (p. 168). In fact Levins analysis is totally erroneous: it is African society that has been criticized, as being incompatible with the individualism required of market economies. It is in Africa and other areas of the African world rather than in Europe that the idea of the extended family, with its concomitant principles of cooperation and altruistic obligation, is held to be widespread. But I do not make an essentialist argument here. Human social relations are determined maximally by the principle of sociological contingency: individualism and anomie are rampant in large urban areas while cooperation and altruism are more common in the rural areas of whatever continent. So again, ...

After the Ekiti governorship election, where it was bested by the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raised a terse allegation that it was outdone in that election by vote buying by its conqueror. The noise was so pervasive that it soon became a national anthem. Yea, Vote buying has become a new demon riddling the countrys electoral system and the survival of the countrys democracy was rested on crippling this anomie! Yea, it sounded good as that frenzy trended! Sure, the PDP must find a convenient alibi for its failure. It couldnt fault the transparent manner the election was conducted. It couldnt compare the election with the notorious brigandage it did in Ekiti in 2014 whose noxious trails still ricochet today. It cant even see the similarity between the election and what PDP had been dishing to Nigerians as elections when its dubious reign lasted. So vote-buying suddenly ceased to be one of the ageless acrid tools in PDPs multifarious election-rigging ...

Since no METHOD= option is used in the PROC CALIS statement, maximum likelihood estimates are computed by default. In the PATH statement, you specify the functional relationships of the variables in the model. These functional relationships are represented as single-headed paths in the path diagram. There are five entries in the PATH statement. You specify the relationships between the latent constructs and the observed variables in the first three path entries. For example, the first entry states that Anomie and Powerless67 are measured indicators of the latent variable Alien67. The path effects or coefficients from the latent factor to these measured indicators are fixed at 1.0 and 0.833, respectively. Similarly, in the next two path entries, you define the relationships between the latent factors Alien71 and SES and their measured indicators. The last two path entries in the PATH statement represent the functional relationships among the latent variables in the model. SES has effects on ...
In 1975, Walker Percy wrote a now-famous essay for Esquire called, simply, Bourbon. This was long before the stuff became a cult and a bottle of 23-year-old Pappy could set you back more than two thousand dollars. In the piece, Percy confesses up front that hes no connoisseur (his preferred brand was Early Times, and he was no stranger to the rather rougher satisfactions of long-ago labels like Two Natural); his subject lay in the aesthetic of bourbon drinking and the pleasure of knocking [it] back. I will have to take his word for it. I dont like bourbon.. Let me say up front that I do like Walker Percy. You will not find a bigger fan than me. I reread The Last Gentleman every year and Lancelot and Love in the Ruins almost as much. I reread the bourbon essay too, quite a bit, because like so much of what Percy wrote, it makes me sit up and say, Yes, yes, I know that! It also makes me laugh out loud. To (very loosely) paraphrase Percy, there are few better defenses against the anomie ...
Mass antisemitism is one of the acute ills of our current world. It has broken out with a violence unparalleled in modern civilization. In some respects the mass antisemitism of our day has a different significance from that of the past. Currently, it is a reflection of the warp of our social order. The system of capitalist economy has broken down in many countries and is seriously threatened in our own; a diffuse process of social disorganization is taking place, which is unleashing powerful destructive forces. Antisemitism is one outstanding expression, among others, of this process of social disintegration. It is linked with war, with economic revolution and counter-revolution. It is one by-product of the fight between the old and the new; between the enlightened forces of progressive change and the reactionary powers of industrial, land owning and fascist groups, seeking desperately to preserve and fortify ruling privileges in a failing economic system. With this vast upheaval, there is a ...
This paper tested a new conceptual model suggesting that risk perception is a significant mediator between perceived neighbourhood disorder and a sense of (un)safety. Three components of risk perception were evaluated: perceived vulnerability, controllability and probability of occurrence of specific offences. Using photo-simulation, three places with different levels of physical and social disorder were created and 120 British students rated the level of disorder, risk and safety of each place. Results showed that risk perception partially mediated the relationship between perceived disorder and safety. Perceived vulnerability was the strongest predictor and mediator in all three places but most significantly in the degraded place. Findings indicated that the more disordered a place is perceived the more a person relies on the perception of risk to estimate how safe she or he might be. Investigating the interpretive processes that occur when people estimate risk and safety, is crucial.. ...

The Practice of Optimism. The test of all beliefs is their practical effect in life. It be true that optimism compels the world forward, and pessimism retards it, them it is dangerous to propagate a pessimistic philosophy. One who believes that the pain in the world outweighs the joy, and expresses that unhappy conviction, only adds to the pain. Schopenhauer is an enemy to the race. Even if he earnestly believed that this is the most wretched of possible worlds, he should not promulgate a doctrine which robs men of the incentive to fight with circumstance. If Life gave him ashes for bread, it was his fault. Life is a fair field, and the right will prosper if we stand by our guns.. Let pessimism once take hold of the mind, and life is all topsy-turvy, all vanity and vexation of spirit. There is no cure for individual or social disorder, except in forgetfulness and annihilation. Let us eat, drink and be merry, says the pessimist, for to-morrow we die. If I regarded my life from the point of ...

Screen time activities (e.g., television, computers, video games) have been linked to several negative health outcomes among young people. In order to develop evidence-based interventions to reduce screen time, the factors that influence the behavior need to be better understood. High neighborhood disorder, which may encourage young people to stay indoors where screen time activities are readily available, is one potential factor to consider. Results are based on 15,917 youth in grades 6-10 (aged 10-16 years old) who participated in the Canadian 2009/10 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Survey (HBSC). Total hours per week of television, video games, and computer use were reported by the participating students in the HBSC student questionnaire. Ten items of neighborhood disorder including safety, neighbors taking advantage, drugs/drinking in public, ethnic tensions, gangs, crime, conditions of buildings/grounds, abandoned buildings, litter, and graffiti were measured using the HBSC student

Source: United Nations (1953) Comparative Survey on Juvenile Delinquency, part-iv, Asia and Far East, New York, (p.4).. Robert K Merton in his work Social Structure and Anomie 1938, has pinpointed social structural processes as the ultimate source of the problem of juvenile delinquency emphasizing the facts that there are flows and contradiction in the organization. A person is trust into anomy when the goal of society are denied to him although he has scrupulously adhered to the institutionalize means whereby other people ordinarily achieve this goal. Due to such contradiction, an anomic individual usually searches for alternative means to achieve his goals in a deviant pattern.. Healy and Bronner, (Bela, 1964), in their study, New Light on Delinquency, come to a conclusion that, in nearly all the delinquent cases their are clear evidence that those who were found delinquent were very unhappy in their life circumstances due to lack of affection.. Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health 2018, 15(1), 156; doi:10.3390/ijerph15010156. Sammanfattning. This study addressed school-contextual features of social disorder in relation to sixth-grade students experiences of bullying victimization and mental health complaints. It investigated, firstly, whether the schools concentrations of behavioural problems were associated with individual students likelihood of being bullied, and secondly, whether the schools concentrations of behavioural problems and bullying victimization predicted students emotional and psychosomatic health complaints. The data were derived from the Swedish National Survey of Mental Health among Children and Young People, carried out among sixth-grade students (approximately 12-13 years old) in Sweden in 2009. The analyses were based on information from 59,510 students distributed across 1999 schools. The statistical method used was multilevel modelling. While students own behavioural problems were associated with an elevated ...
Data for this project was compiled from a variety of sources. To generate the homicide rate (per 100,000), homicide incident counts were obtained from HOMICIDES IN CHICAGO, 1965-1995 (ICPSR 6399). This dataset includes tract identifiers that allow for merging with other tract characteristics. The population sizes used in the denominator of the homicide rate were obtained from the decennial United States Census files for each decade from 1980-2000, and cubic spline interpolation was used to generate intercensal estimates. The homicide rate was calculated per 100,000 population. Due to a high degree of skewness in the homicide rate, the study analyses used the natural log of the homicide rate. One objective was to examine the relationships between homicide trends and various characteristics of neighborhood structure identified as relevant by the social disorganization perspective. These variables were drawn from the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1980 [UNITED STATES]: SUMMARY TAPE FILE 3A ...
2) ignorance about the multiplication rule of probability for criminal behavior. Namely, failure to recognize that criminal behavior is determined by the interaction of multiple variables or factors.. Regarding the first error, research in criminology and psychology has identified numerous variables that may increase an individual tendency to commit crime. These variables range from social disorganization, dysfunctional environments, crime learning conditions, developmental problems, lack of social control, lack of education, stigmatization, cognitive deficiencies, impulsivity, childhood trauma, as well as some associated demographic variables such as gender, social class and race. The distinction between the relative frequency and the absolute frequency can be explained with the following examples:. Research has shown that people with only high school education are more likely to commit crime than people with graduate degrees. The same can be said about high impulsive persons, who are more ...

In this paper, we study the effect of displacement of population into cities on urban conflict in developing countries. To do so, we construct a novel measure of exposure to floods, using data on more than 3,300 flood events worldwide, as an exogenous source of population displacement. We combine this with city level observations of more than 9,000 urban social disorder events. Exposure to floods is found to be associated with higher likelihood and frequency of urban social disorder. Our evidence suggests that the effects of floods on urban disorder occur mainly through the displacement of population into large cities. Exploring the information on urban disorder events in more detail, we find that the association between city growth and urban disorder is strongest for events related to public service provision, wages and food prices.. The research team was positively surprised by the resulting large size of the difference between the two conditions, obtained only after one minute and a half of testing, and was equally astonished that the difference in conditions did not exist when the faces were inverted. The study also confirmed that the region for face perception lies primarily in the posterior part of the brains right hemisphere. The ability to recognize a face is a common problem in cases of sudden onset of posterior brain damage, neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia and social disorders such as autism. Rossion points out that an advantage of using this highly sensitive SSVEP methods is that it can be used and compared objectively in different human populations - adults, infants, children, neurological patients, people with long-life face recognition impairments or autism - without requiring complex instructions and a long testing duration.. Face recognition involves the most ...

I admire but disagree with Michael Kinsleys Sunday column on Bush the Thinker. His argument is this: Bush, contrary to Kinsleys own preconceptions, has been growing intellectually, as proved by his State of the Union and inaugural addresses. In particular, Kinsley believes Bush is parting ways with his neocon tutors by blaming terrorism on tyranny, an argument Kinsley characterizes as a variation on the old root-causes school of crime, which said that crime was caused by poverty and other social disorders that schooled would-be good citizens in cruelty and unfairness. Kinsley quotes Bush saying: The peace we seek will only be achieved by eliminating the conditions that feed radicalism and ideologies of murder. If whole regions of the world remain in despair and grow in hatred, they will be the recruiting grounds for terror. Kinsley goes on to compare Bushs insight here with one of Emma Goldmans that, terrorism . . . is inevitable so long as tyranny continues, for it is not the ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Neighborhood effects on an individuals health using neighborhood measurements developed by factor analysis and cluster analysis. AU - Li, Yu Sheng. AU - Chuang, Ying Chih. PY - 2009/1. Y1 - 2009/1. N2 - This study suggests a multivariate-structural approach combining factor analysis and cluster analysis that could be used to examine neighborhood effects on an individuals health. Data were from the Taiwan Social Change Survey conducted in 1990, 1995, and 2000. In total, 5,784 women and men aged over 20 years living in 428 neighborhoods were interviewed. Participants addresses were geocoded with census data for measuring neighborhood-level characteristics. The factor analysis was applied to identify neighborhood dimensions, which were used as entities in the cluster analysis to generate a neighborhood typology. The factor analysis generated three neighborhood dimensions: neighborhood education, age structure, and neighborhood family structure and employment. The cluster analysis ...
Recent epidemiologic studies reveal that alcohol use and anxiety continue to be prevalent problems beginning in the adolescent years. This chapter presents a study that explores the specific associations between these two highly prevalent disorders and a protective factor shown in previous research to be robust in adolescents': spirituality. This investigation is especially germane to adolescents as prior studies have indicated that the protective qualities of spirituality may be more robust in adolescents than adults, suggesting a potential role of spirituality in onset of these disorders. Substance use was associated with relational spirituality -a sense of personal ongoing connection with the Creator. In contrast, anxiety was associated with the quality of interpersonal relationships within a religious community. The results of the study suggest that substance use might best be understood as primarily a spiritual disorder, while anxiety may be fundamentally a social disorder.Keywords:adolescent;
If we can agree that poverty is a social problem, we are led to another question: what sort of social problem is it? For some, it is a social problem because people should not be poor: it involves social injustice. For others, poverty is a social problem because poor people behave badly (or bring up children poorly): it involves social disorder. We therefore have another parting of the ways, with some believing that social justice requires poor people to become less poor, and others believing ...

This publication presents results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) national Crime Victimisation Survey, conducted from July 2009 to June 2010 using the ABS Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS). The survey collected data about victims for a selected range of personal and household offences, whether victims reported these incidents to police, characteristics of victims and characteristics of their most recent incident, and peoples perceptions on social disorder in their local area. This is the second crime victimisation survey conducted by the ABS since it was redesigned in 2008-09. Time series data are included to compare results with the 2008-09 Crime Victimisation Survey ...

This article has been cited by other articles in PMC.. This article examines the most significant, contradictory evidence pertaining to autism. The first section of the article includes reports of recovery from autism, data obtained from studies involving oxytocin, early deprivation, autism in preterm children, late-onset autism, and symptom overlap among ASD, social phobias and personality disorders. In the second section of the article, we offer a model that better incorporates current findings and address controversies that continue to surround ASD. We propose an umbrella term social inhibition disorders which integrates autism spectrum disorders and social phobias, as well as schizoid, schizotypal, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. It would also include quasi-autism, which has been found in early deprivation studies, autism in preterm children, and cases of late-onset autism presenting after herpes encephalitis infection. Finally, we discuss suggestions for further research ...
Downloadable! In the neighbourhood effects literature, the socialisation mechanism is usually investigated by looking at the association between neighbourhood characteristics and educational attainment. The step in between, that adolescents actually internalise educational norms held by residents, is often assumed. We attempt to fill this gap by looking at how educational commitments are influenced by neighbourhood characteristics. We investigate this process for migrant youth, a group that lags behind in educational attainment compared to native youth, and might therefore be particularly vulnerable to neighbourhood effects. To test our hypothesis we used longitudinal panel data with five waves (N=4179), combined with fixed-effects models which control for a large portion of potential selection bias. These models have an advantage over naïve OLS models in that they predict the effect of change in neighbourhood characteristics on change in educational commitment, and therefore offer a more dynamic
Children with autism see simple movement twice as quickly as other children their age, and this hypersensitivity to motion may provide clues to a fundamental cause of the developmental disorder, according to a new study. Such heightened sensory perception in autism may help explain why some people with the disorder are painfully sensitive to noise and bright lights. It also may be linked to some of the complex social and behavioral deficits associated with autism, says Duje Tadin, one of the lead authors on the study and an assistant professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. We think of autism as a social disorder because children with this condition often struggle with social interactions, but what we sometimes neglect is that almost everything we know about the world comes from our senses. Abnormalities in how a person sees or hears can have a profound effect on social communication.. Although previous studies have found that people with autism possess ...

The FIS won the municipal elections by a landslide and were poised to win the nation?s first national elections. However its right was denied through illegal means, unconstitutional and not even in the nation?s interest. The FIS was never a militant organisation nor an extremist movement like what it has been attempted to made as later on. The FIS grew from the grassroots, the trend of the masses who were wishing for change. For years the old regime of the FLN could not bring advancement or development for the country. The FLN government was fraught with corruption and inefficiencies that were prevalent and would usually accompany weak socialist regimes all over the middle east and the third world. So when the oil boom was over and oil could not support its economy, Algeria underwent an economic crisis and social disorder. Social upheaval took to the streets in the form of food and price riots which was beyond the regime?s will to contain. The FLN regime had to call upon the syeikhs, imams and ...
Up to a million Japanese teens and twenty-somethings are refusing to come out of their rooms, reports Phil Rees in the BBC. Doctors are blaming the epidemic on a social disorder known as hikikomori(Japanese for withdraw from society), caused by severe academic pressures and an inability to talk to their families. Some observers are blaming traditional Japanese poetry and music that celebrates the nobility of solitude, or the fact that its not unusual for young men to remain under their parents care until theyre in their 30s and 40s in some cases. Hikikomori is more likely to strike eldest sons, according to some studies, and the disorder does not exist outside of Japan ...
In this population-based cohort of older adults, greater neighborhood-level social cohesion was associated with significantly reduced risk of stroke mortality but not incident stroke. The association with stroke mortality was independent of known stroke risk factors and neighborhood-level socioeconomic status and was not attenuated by the control for individual-level measures of social network and engagement. Findings suggest that aspects of the neighborhood social environment may affect stroke risk among older adults, a demographic group in which neighborhood effects may be particularly salient.11. The observed protective effect of neighborhood cohesion on stroke mortality is consistent with previous studies. Neighborhood-level cohesion has been linked to heart disease,24 all-cause mortality,25 self-rated health,26,27 smoking,28 physical activity,29,30 hypertension,31 and measures of mental health.26,32 The findings of this study are also consistent with the overlapping literature on the health ...

Weight: All analysis of the data should be weighted using the total survey weight. The cell-level file includes a separate weight for each outcome and mediator measure that is the sum of weights for all observations in the cell with valid data for the measure (for example, wt_happy_scale123_ad is the weight for the subjective well-being scale measure, mn_happy_scale123_ad. In the pseudo-individual file, mn_f_wt_totsvy is the average of the total survey weight variable for all observations in the cell.. In the original individual-level file, the total survey weight (f_wt_totsvy) is calculated as the product of three component weights:. 1. Randomization ratio weight - At the start of the MTO program, random assignment (RA) ratios were set to produce equal numbers of leased-up families in the low-poverty and traditional voucher groups based on expected lease-up rates. The initial ratios were 8 to 3 to 5: eight low-poverty voucher group families to three traditional voucher families to five ...

We analyze the effect of industry, region, and time on new businesssurvival rates by means of a multi-dimensional approach. The data relateto West German districts in the 1983-2000 period. The survival chancesof start-ups tend to be relatively low in industries characterized by ahigh minimum efficient size and high numbers of entries. We find thatregional characteristics play a rather important role and thatintroducing the regional dimension leads to considerable improvements ofthe estimation results. The significance of the regional dimension isalso reflected in a remarkably high level of neighborhood effects. ...
