Ancient mitochondrial M haplogroups identified in the Southwest Pacific. (1/7)

Based on whole mtDNA sequencing of 14 samples from Northern Island Melanesia, we characterize three formerly unresolved branches of macrohaplogroup M that we call haplogroups M27, M28, and M29. Our 1,399 mtDNA control region sequences and a literature search indicate these haplogroups have extremely limited geographical distributions. Their coding region variation suggests diversification times older than the estimated date for the initial settlement of Northern Island Melanesia. This finding indicates that they were among the earliest mtDNA variants to appear in these islands or in the ancient continent of Sahul. These haplogroups from Northern Island Melanesia extend the existing schema for macrohaplogroup M, with many independent branches distributed across Asia, East Africa, Australia, and Near Oceania.  (+info)

Mesopotamian medicine. (2/7)

Although the Mesopotamian civilisation is as old as that of Egypt and might even have predated it, we know much less about Mesopotamian medicine, mainly because the cuneiform source material is less well researched. Medical healers existed from the middle of the 3rd millennium. In line with the strong theocratic state culture, healers were closely integrated with the powerful priestly fraternity, and were essentially of three main kinds: baru (seers) who were experts in divination, ashipu (exorcists), and asu (healing priests) who tended directly to the sick. All illness was accepted as sent by gods, demons and other evil spirits, either as retribution for sins or as malevolent visitations. Treatment revolved around identification of the offending supernatural power, appeasement of the angry gods, for example by offering amulets or incantations, exorcism of evil spirits, as well as a measure of empirical therapy aimed against certain recognised symptom complexes. Medical practice was rigidly codified, starting with Hammurabi's Code in the 18th century BC and persisting to the late 1st millennium BC. Works like the so-called Diagnostic Handbook, the Assyrian Herbal and Prescription Texts describe the rationale of Mesopotamian medicine, based predominantly on supernatural concepts, although rudimentary traces of empirical medicine are discernible. There is evidence that Egyptian medicine might have been influenced by Mesopotamian practices, but Greek rational medicine as it evolved in the 5th/4th centuries BC almost certainly had no significant Mesopotamian roots.  (+info)

Maimonides: an early but accurate view on the treatment of haemorrhoids. (3/7)

Moses Maimonides was not only one of the most influential religious figures of the middle ages, but also a pioneer in a wide variety of medical practices. A brief history of his life, and what is known about his medical education, is given here. His paper on haemorrhoids is summarised, as well as a review of the current understanding of the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of this common condition. The comparison of Maimonides' writings to modern understanding of not only the prevention and treatment of haemorrhoids, but also his approach to the patient as a whole in terms of pre- and postoperative care, demonstrate how ahead of his time this great philosopher was.  (+info)

A description of the methods used to obtain information on ancient disease and medicine and of how the evidence has survived. (4/7)

This paper summarises the common modalities that are available for researching ancient medicine and disease as well as explaining how some of these sources have survived to modern day. These are explained under the three broad headings of palaeopathology, artefacts, and texts. The descriptions use a variety of examples from ancient societies including in the Bronze Age, Babylonia and Assyria, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and ancient Rome to help explain these modalities. In addition, a review of the advantages and disadvantages of using these tools is included to help current and future historians in stimulating future research in this fascinating area.  (+info)

Anatomical and genetic study of an ancient animal tooth showing brachyodont and hypsodont mixed taxonomical characteristics. (7/7)

A non-human dental piece was found in a Roman Empire tomb dated the 3rd century A.C. in Zaragoza (Spain). The morphology of this piece showed mixed brachyodont (carnivores) and hypsodont (herbivores) characteristics. As a result, the taxonomical assignation of the piece was impossible. Therefore, a protocol based on the DNA sequence of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial region (COI) was applied. For this purpose, a pair of primers able to amplify this region in a large variety of animals was designed. The results point to a species of the Genus Bos (Family Bovidae). This assignation was later confirmed by these quencing of a short fragment of the mitochondrial D-loop region. A complete morphological description of the tooth is presented together with the DNA sequence study and comparison protocol.  (+info)

Genetic Diversity and Relationships of Korean Chicken Breeds Based on 30 Microsatellite Markers Korean Native Chicken;Microsatellite;Genetic Diversity;Genetic Relationship; The effective management of endangered animal genetic resources is one of the most important concerns of modern breeding. Evaluation of genetic diversity and relationship of local breeds is an important factor towards the identification of unique and valuable genetic resources. This study aimed to analyze the genetic diversity and population structure of six Korean native chicken breeds (n = 300), which were compared with three imported breeds in Korea (n = 150). For the analysis of genetic diversity, 30 microsatellite markers from FAO/ISAG recommended diversity panel or previously reported microsatellite markers were used. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 15 per locus, with a mean of 8.13. The average observed heterozygosity within native breeds varied between 0.46 and 0.59. The overall heterozygote deficiency ($F_{IT}$) in

We will arise very early this morning in order to arrive at Angkor Watt for sunrise. The huge temple is fantastic in the early morning light and will be a great start to a full day of exploring the incredible ruins of Cambodias ancient Khmer empire. After sunrise most tourists depart for Siem Reap for breakfast, but we will bring a packed breakfast in order to visit Angkor Watt after sunrise when its less crowded. We will spend the majority of the morning at Angkor Watt, the largest religious structure in the world. The grandeur of this temple is unmatched with its exquisite bas-reliefs, flooded moat, sandstone causeway, carved outer walls and three storey central temple. After Angkor Watt we will visit the decaying temple of Ta Prohm whose walls and spires are still draped in vegetation including enormous trees whose roots meander over and through the temple stones. Ta Prohm looks much as most of the ruins did when they were first discovered giving it an other-worldly feel. We will have a ...

Chicken Breed Information - Penedesenca - These beautiful Spanish breed birds lay very dark brown eggs, and are so unique that theyll be the talk of your flock. Colored eggs are always a more brilliant color early every laying season, and slowly fade as the season progresses. They have unusual combs, called carnation combs, or kings combs. These start as a regular single comb at the front, and then split into several lobes at the rear like a crown. These birds are very active, and like most Mediterranean breeds, wont be suited to the coldest weather due to their large combs and smaller body size. However, they do wonderfully in heat. And have we mentioned the dark brown eggs? Oh, the eggs!
Chicken Breed Information - Crevecoeur - Crevecoeurs are a beautiful, black, crested breed with a V-shaped comb, named after the Crevecoeur village in Normandy, France--the region from which they originated. They were originally developed for meat production but are also good layers. Extremely popular in France in the early twentieth century, Crevecoeur numbers deteriorated sharply during World War II and are critically endangered now. They can be purchased at a few of the major hatcheries.
Media reports indicate that Sofia Vergara has admitted to considering freezing her eggs. This is so that she can have children with boyfriend Nick Loeb in the future.

My research focuses on understanding the evolutionary relationships of ancient land plants, especially ferns and horsetails, by integrating evidence from morphology, molecules (DNA sequence data from multiple genes), and the fossil record. I use an explicit phylogenetic framework to examine the morphological evolution of various sporophytic and gametophytic characters within vascular plants, and to gain insight into the evolution of various life history traits and the body plans that typify vascular plants. A phylogenetic perspective also informs my molecular evolutionary studies that attempt to elucidate why we observe remarkable rate heterogeneity in chloroplast genes in land plant phylogeny ...

Anyone who follows the theoretical computer science blogs knows that two peoples-the Technicians and the Conceptualists-have been warring over the same tiny piece of land (the STOC/FOCS accepted papers list) for well over a generation. The most fundamentalist of the Conceptualists believe that STOC and FOCS were promised to them in a divine covenant with Merlin, while moderates simply point out that the Conceptualists have maintained a continuous presence in these conferences since the time of Cook and Karp, always turning STOCward in prayer on the day of the submission deadline; and that, if not for STOC and FOCS, conceptual papers might get wiped entirely off the face of the earth (or worse, shunted to CCC). For their part, the Technicians see the Conceptualists as unwelcome usurpers, infiltrating an ancient land of log factors with bizarre new models and definitions; and suggest that, if the Conceptualists feel so wronged by physicists, biologists, and economists who refuse to see the natural ...
And now, David has a post up, Yamnayas exotic ancestry: The Kartvelian connection. You can read the post yourself, but he presents TreeMix results which strongly imply that the Near Eastern gene flow into the Yamnaya population derives from one with a relationship to modern Kartvelian groups, the most prominent of which are Georgians. This is not entirely surprising. Ive seen similar things, though Im not sure what to think of this. Going back to Dienekes post he suggests that It is, perhaps, in the ancient land of the Colchi, protected by the Black and Caspian seas, and by tall mountains on the remaining sides, that something resembling the ur-population survived. That is, the people of the trans-Caucasian region may preserve elements of the deep ancestral heritage of the Middle East which was to some extent effaced by later migrations. I have some Assyrian genotypes, and this population has strong affinities with Armenians and Georgians. Additionally, I believe that much of the west ...

Coucou de Rennes are chickens with fluffy plumages and a striking appearance. Theyre considered critically endangered chickens; however, some breeders are deliberately raising them to ensure the breed is very much available.. Their plumages are tinted with blue, white, and grey colors. Theyre white-skinned and usually bred for their tasty meat and showmanship. Theyre available in some museums and always a beautiful sight to behold.. They continue to lay eggs into their older years, so you can expect a steady supply of eggs from them. They adapt to both hot and cold seasons. As such, there are fewer chances of them getting diseases during both periods, as long as you adequately care for them.. However, they arent sociable. Coucou de Rennes doesnt want to be handled. They dont make a lot of noise but arent birds that allow close relationships. They love to forage vigorously, making them active. You must provide the space to free-range as much as they want.. Some of the most prominent ...

More importantly, in the initial analysis, those with diabetes were found to have significant improvements in their HbA1c levels - seeing a decline from a mean 7.1% to a mean 6.1%. This is again a study that finds diet alone improves HbA1c significantly while also reducing or eliminating medication!. Now one would think that results like this, and others before it, would inspire those whom remain skeptical to see the value in such a dietary approach; after all, it is helping those with chronic health conditions to lose weight, improve specific risk markers and also reduce medication requirements.. Well, not so fast say the experts sought for comment by the CBC for their article!. Here, we demonstrate that the confocal spot-detection method (Escobar et al., 1994), when used in combination with a low-affinity Ca2+ indicator (DiGregorio and Vergara, 1997) and a high-resolution stage-scan device, can be used to characterize the rapid formation and dissipation of fluorescence domains in re- sponse to single APs. We find that OGB-5N fluorescence transients recorded in a single scan, that is from a series of spot locations separated by 200-300 nm, exhibit dramatic changes in their magnitude and time courses. Three dimensional plots of a family of scanned fluorescence transients against the spot displacement show the existence of AP-induced fluorescence domains. We demonstrate that the measurement of the FWHM of an isochronal ΔF/F plot, at early times after AP invasion, provides an estimate of the Ca2+ domain size. Moreover, mathematical model simulations suggest that the FWHM of the isochronal ΔF/F plots can be used to estimate the size of the Ca2+ entry site. Consistent with ...

Turkey is a rich ancient land with a rich history and varied traditions. Turkey is noted to be the land of origin of the progenitors of the famous St. Huberts hounds. The country has made yet another contribution to the world of dog lovers. Paleontologists have used a fossil from the most precisely dated beaked whale in the world to pinpoint for the first time a date when East Africas mysterious elevation began.. The 17 million-year-old fossil is from the Ziphiidae family. It was discovered 740 kilometers inland at a elevation of 620 meters in modern Kenyas harsh desert region and is the only stranded whale ever found so far inland on the African continent, said SMU vertebrate paleontologist Louis Jacobs.. Uplift associated with the Great Rift Valley of East Africa and the environmental changes it produced have puzzled scientists for decades because the timing and starting elevation have been poorly constrained. Determining ancient land elevation is very difficult, but the whale provides one near sea level.. Its rare to get a paleo-elevation, Jacobs said, noting only one other in East Africa, determined from a lava flow.. At the time the whale was alive, it would have been swimming far inland up a river with a low gradient ...
The contradiction between the letter of the Covenant of the League of Nations and the policy of the Allies is even more flagrant in the case of the independent nation of Palestine than in that of the independent nation of Syria. For, in Palestine we do not propose even to go through the form of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants of the country. The four great powers are committed to Zionism and Zionism, be it right or wrong, good or bad, is rooted in age-long tradition, in present needs, in future hopes, of far profounder import than the desires and prejudices of the 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land. In my opinion that is right. What I have never been able to understand is how it can be harmonised with the Anglo-French declaration, the Covenant, or the instructions to the commission of Enquiry… In fact, so far as Palestine is concerned, the powers have made no statement of fact that is not admittedly wrong, and no declaration of policy which, at least in the ...

The Asian countries are probably best known, where monsters are concerned, for their depictions of vengeful female ghosts. It should come as no surprise that these ancient lands would also be home to a host of strange demons, spirits, and monsters unlike anything with which most Westerners are familiar.. One of the most intriguing of these Asian monsters comes from China. Called the jiang-shi, it is a bizarre hybrid of vampire and zombie known primarily for its habit of hopping after its victims. While this is an unintentionally humorous aspect of the creature, the jiang-shi is far more sinister than its stunted mobility would imply.. Jiang-shi translates to stiff corpse. Its most famous feature is its movement by hopping, arms outstretched, because its body has already succumbed to rigor mortis. The jiang-shi, though frequently referred to as a vampire, developed independently of Western vampires-it likely arose as an extension of the Chinese hungry ghost.. It is in fact more akin to the ...

Thank you Madam Chair,. In searching for the truth, South Africa wishes to propose a revision of the Codex General Guidelines on Claims (CAC/GL 1-1979) which was revised in 1991, and specifically point 3.4 that prohibits Claims as to the suitability of a food for use in the prevention, alleviation, treatment or cure of a disease.. Thirteen years have passed since the last revision of these guidelines. In this time a huge body of scientific information has become available to prove without dispute that point 3.4 is no longer sustainable or morally justifiable considering Codexs mandate that when setting forth a standard or guideline, Codex Committees must base all decisions on scientific evidence.. Scientific evidence now proves beyond a doubt that food and nutrients can offer an alternative option in the prevention, alleviation and cure of disease. Nutritional cures include classical deficiency diseases and metabolic disorders. Taking into account the role of genetic dispositions, ...
