Im Manitoban and half Mennonite, and I would just like to point out that this article is regarding an ultra-conservative Mennonite colony in Bolivia. The colony just happens to be named the Manitoba colony for some reason. In Manitoba, the majority of Mennonites (not all) live in the community and the women are free to (mostly) do as they please. That being said, one of my best friends married into a strongly conservative Mennonite church. I was one of her bridesmaids, and she had to sit me down before the ceremony because part of their vows was based on the wife serving the man, man serving God thing that is so universally reviled by feminists. She knew I disagreed, but it was her wedding, and I appreciated that she had the presence of mind to warn me it was coming beforehand, but it still enrages and saddens me to think about it.I also do know men who are colony Mennonites, and although their wives and daughters are frequently with them, I do not know their names, nor have they ever spoken to ...

The objectives of the survey were to obtain a profile of the religious beliefs, attitudes, and practices of members of the participating [Mennonite] denominations...to identify trends in these areas that would provide clues regarding the impact of modernization on Mennonite life and thought....There was also interest in determining whether modernization involved increases in secularism, individualism, and materialism. BEEFSTEAK TOMATO: The beefsteak tomato is one of the largest tomato cultivars, with some varieties weighing in at over 2 pounds per tomato. This meaty tomato is grown in a rainbow of colors, from vibrant red to pale yellow to purple-black. Rather than maintaining a perfectly spherical shape as it develops, the beefsteak tomato takes on a decided kidney-bean shape, spreading out to the sides. The beefsteak tomato is one of the slowest-maturing tomatoes, with the largest beefsteak cultivars taking up to 90 days to produce ripe fruit. Typically, the beefsteak tomato vine will continue to produce and set fruit until the first frost. Tiffen Mennonite Tomato. Lycopersicon esculentum. Heirloom Mennonite variety. One of these colonist families remained Mennonite; others soon followed from the Lower Rhine region, and later from Hamburg-Altona in Germany, so that a Mennonite congregation was formed by 1690 (or 1702). This was not only the first Mennonite church to be established in America, but the first German settlement of any sort in North America. Germantown is to the Germans of America what Jamestown is to the English. In 1702, a lot was set-aside for a Mennonite meetinghouse that was built in 1708 on the site of the present little stone building erected in 1770.. In 1702 Matthias van Bebber started a new Mennonite settlement along Skippack Creek, some 15 miles to the northwest in what is now Montgomery County, which has since grown to numerous congregations in what came to be known as the Franconia district, extending 30 miles north and an equal distance west, covering most of the Montgomery County and Bucks County area and spilling over into the counties of Chester, Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton. ...
MAST. - Near Plevna, Howard Co., Ind., of consumption, David S. Mast. He was born May 8th, 1823, and died Sept. 30th, 1891, aged 68 years, 4 months and 22 days. He was married to Nancy Livengood Oct. 19th, 1851, and lived in matrimony 39 years, 11 months and 11 days. He was a member of the Amish Mennonite church. He was the father of 16 children of whom 13 survive him. He was very much concerned about his souls salvation. During his sufferings, he admonished others that were living too cold and unconcerned in the way of serving their Lord and Master. A few days before his departure he called for the ministers and his children to observe the communion with him, which was done at the house of his daughter where he and wife stayed. The day before he died they thought that he was dying, and word was sent to his children to come as soon as possible. Bro. N. Sproal came there at the same time. Bro. Mast however revived again, and he then asked Bro. Sproal whether his life would not soon be ended, ...
It is amazing how people can touch the lives of others. Today I went walking hoping to find a Mennonite church, Casa Horeb. Andrews host mom had told me where the church was as we were driving down the Periferico but I conveniently forgot which avenue she told me. I ended up walking six blocks too far because I thought I was supposed to go to 13th Avenue rather than 19th Avenue. But I am glad that I did. On 13th Ave. I asked a woman if she knew the Mennonite church. Of course she did not even know what a Mennonite is. She told me there were two churches on 13th Ave, but if I wanted to, I could go with them to an Evangelical church. It meant a lot that they invited me to their church, so I went and I really enjoyed my time with them. Their Evangelical style of worship is certainly not my style of Mennonite, but I enjoyed the energy. The ladys daughter was a huge help during the service and she tried to help me understand what was happening by whispering things in my ear… in Spanish. She is ...

Burton Stephen Lancaster (November 2, 1913 - October 20, 1994) was an American actor and producer. Initially known for playing tough guys with a tender streak, he went on to achieve success with more complex and challenging roles over a 45-year career in film and, later, television. He was a four-time nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actor (winning once), and also winning two BAFTA Awards and one Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Actor. Lancaster performed as a circus acrobat in the 1930s. After serving in World War II, the 32-year-old Lancaster landed a role in a Broadway play and drew the attention of a Hollywood agent. His breakthrough role was the film noir The Killers in 1946 alongside Ava Gardner. A critical success, it launched both of their careers. In 1953, Lancaster played the illicit lover of Deborah Kerr in the military drama From Here to Eternity. A box office smash, it won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and landed a Best Actor nomination for Lancaster. In ...

Over the last 35 years, researchers from the Laboratory of Biological Anthropology at the University of Kansas have been working with Mennonite communities to better understand evolutionary patterns of fission-fusion in relationship to their genetic history and population structure. In this study, short tandem repeat (STR) markers from the nonrecombining region of the Y chromosome (NRY) provided increased resolution of the molecular population structure for these groups. NRY is known to be informative for determining paternal genetic ancestral patterns in recently derived human populations. Mennonites represent a branch of the Anabaptist movement that began in northern and central Europe in the 16th century and maintain a well-documented migration and genealogical history. Provided this historical information, we investigated the genetic relationship of 15 NRY STR loci within five Mennonite communities from Kansas (Goessel, Lone Tree, Garden View, and Meridian) and Nebraska (Henderson). We sought to
Mennonite Brethren Bible Institute (MBBI) was the expression of a denomination that placed a high value on biblical literacy. From the outset of their arrival in British Columbia, Mennonites quickly organized local congregations, and soon thereafter, Bible schools. Such institutions, it was felt, would shield young people against the prevailing secularism and also provide a generous supply of workers for local church ministries.. Soon after the establishment of the South Abbotsford Mennonite Brethren Church in 1932, Kornelius H. Klassen called together a group of like-minded members for the purpose of planning a Christian school. This vision came to life on 26 September 1936 with the introduction of an evening program and Cornelius C. Peters, a European trained teacher, as the first instructor. Some 30 students enrolled for classes that first winter. The South Abbotsford Bible School functioned until 1941 when owing to the World War II, classes were suspended.. However, war conditions did not ...

3BL Media) Atlanta, GA - August 31, 2012 - A large new observational study finds more evidence of an association between daily aspirin use and modestly lower cancer mortality, but suggests any reduction may be smaller than that observed in a recent analysis. The study, appearing early online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI), provides additional support for a potential benefit of daily aspirin use for cancer mortality, but the authors say important questions remain about the size of the potential benefit.. A recent analysis pooling results from existing randomized trials of daily aspirin for prevention of vascular events found an estimated 37% reduction in cancer mortality among those using aspirin for five years or more. But uncertainty remains about how much daily aspirin use may lower cancer mortality, as the size of this pooled analysis was limited and two very large randomized trials of aspirin taken every other day found no effect on overall cancer mortality.. For the ...
BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors are advised to follow lifestyle recommendations on diet, physical activity, and body fatness proposed by the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute of Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) for cancer prevention. Previous studies have demonstrated that higher concordance with these recommendations measured using an index score (the WCRF/AICR score) was associated with lower cancer incidence and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between pre-diagnostic concordance with WCRF/AICR recommendations and mortality in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. METHODS: The association between the WCRF/AICR score (score range 0-6 in men and 0-7 in women; higher scores indicate greater concordance) assessed on average 6.4 years before diagnosis and CRC-specific (n = 872) and overall mortality (n = 1,113) was prospectively examined among 3,292 participants diagnosed with CRC in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort (mean follow
With all emerging modern technologies that reduce the dose to normal tissues, there are predictions of decreased late toxicity, especially important in this young and favorable-risk patient population. Unfortunately, many late effects of treatment develop decades later, and these findings are not available to inform treatment decisions today. In the absence of this information, practitioners must rely on worst-case scenario results from radiation treatments delivered using larger fields, higher doses, and more intensive combination chemotherapy regimens. Alternatively, models may allow prediction of toxicities that patients will experience after these more gentle treatment regimens. An early publication used the International Commission on Radiological Protection calculation scheme to calculate cancer incidence from dose distributions and found that proton treatment would result in lower cancer incidence than photon treatment. In the report by Rechner et al. described above, the authors used ...
Aboriginal artist and carver Isadore Charters worked on his healing pole under a tent during breaks at the B.C. MB convention, May 3-4. Charters, who lives in Chilliwack, B.C., and attends Sardis Community Church, is carving the totem to give expression to elements that brought comfort and healing following his experiences in the Indian residential school system. Images on the yellow cedar pole will include Jesus, a nurturing nun, blankets from both Aboriginal and Mennonite traditions, and even Zorro.. When I carve on this pole, I let go of my anger and my hurt. The new me comes out because I know that people are trying to help and not just trying to forget, says Charters. The pole is travelling to churches and communities throughout B.C., spurring conversations focused on healing, truth telling, and relationship building. Begun in 2011, the pole will be displayed at the site of Charters residential school in the B.C. Interior when complete.. Between 1831 and 1996, more than 150,000 ...
I dont think Ive ever written about anger. Indeed, it is hard to even acknowledge I could be angry. If I learned nothing else in my childhood, it was that a Mennonite woman should never be angry. Anger was the opposite of who Jesus was and what a Christ-like woman should ever feel.

Looking at the young man standing proudly in uniform between his father and brother, it would be easy to forget that Isaiah Shank, now a Fire Academy graduate and Adams County Junior Firefighter, was once a tiny baby with very serious medical needs.. Cindy Shank, Isaiahs mother, was 20 weeks pregnant when she and her husband, Dean, received the news that their baby would be born with a cleft palate. When Isaiah was born, the Shanks were referred to Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic (LCPC) which was an hour away from them.. He was born in Hershey, so we were confused why we had to come to Lancaster, said Cindy, about the referral. But we dont have any regrets!. Isaiah, now 15, had ten surgeries and seven years of speech therapy to bring him to the place he is today. His parents attribute his progress to the care of his medical team.. The first time the Shanks visited LCPC, Isaiah was two weeks old. They came to find the best bottle for him to use with the cleft. Isaiah was considered a moderate ...

She tapped into her Mennonite connections, travelling to Germany herself to recruit new immigrants from German Mennonite families that had a history of migration. Many had moved to Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall from Russia or Kazakhstan, where they had lived in the countryside in a climate comparable to Manitobas.. Some had relatives and friends in the area. Often, they spoke little English.. All of this, combined with Winklers heritage - it was established as a Mennonite community in the 19th century - made it easier for them to integrate.. Of the 50 families Dyck recruited for a pilot project, 42 were still around 10 years later. It was one of Canadas first experiments with nominating people through provincial immigration programs, a system that has since expanded to all provinces.. Since that first pilot, Winkler has drawn people from Latin America, the Philippines and India, among other places. Today, the fourth most commonly spoken language in the city is Tagalog..
