The Atlantic Neptune was remarkable, multi-volume set of sea charts and coastal views prepared from surveys by Samuel Holland, Thomas Hurd, and Charles Blaskowitz. The maps were prepared under the supervision of Des Barres and employed as many as twenty engravers and assistants. The Atlantic Neptune is one of the finest large scale sea atlases of the U.S. and Canadian Atlantic coast line ever produced. The maps in the atlas were produced over six year period (1775-81), and are well known for their accurate portrayal of various sounds, bays, bars, and harbors as well as navigational hazards. Since today is National Fritters Day, I thought it would be an appropriate time to celebrate the popular Keys delicacy--the conch fritter. No food is more synonymous with Keys heritage than the sweet meat of the queen conch. Conch became a staple food for the settlers of the Keys in the early 1800s when people from the Bahamas began migrating here, bringing their love of the sea snail with them. The first people who called themselves conchs were British sympathizers who escaped to the Bahamas during the American Revolution proclaiming that rather than fight, they would eat conch. As their descendants made their way back to Key West, they brought the name with them. Conch takes three to five years to mature and grows to be about one foot long and five pounds. They live on sandy bottoms, among beds of seagrass in warm shallow tropical waters near coral reef habitats. Even after the American Revolution, Rhode Islands royal charter from 1663 was not replaced with a new constitution, and the charter limited suffrage in the state to citizens who owned a certain amount of property. As the state became more populous and industrialized in the 1840s, this limitation applied to a fraction of the states residents. In 1841, a state constitutional convention was held that resulted in a Peoples Constitution. Thomas Wilson Dorr was elected governor under the new constitution in 1842. This constitution was not formally recognized by the states general assembly, which was governed by the royal charter.. ELLOGG, C. H. B., M. D., of Detroit, Mich., was born at Harrisburg, on the 26th of March, 1814. His grandfather, Thomas Kellogg, was a soldier of the American revolution, and lived to the age of one hundred and ten years. His father, Ebenezer Kellogg, served in the war of 1812 ; both were early settlers in Lewis county, N. Y. He obtained his education by attending the common school for a short period during a few winters. He began the study of medicine at the age of fifteen, with Dr. Asa Shaw, a student of Dr. J. H. Vincent, of Cold Brook, N. Y., and attended lectures at Fairfield. Then he traveled in South America, Africa and Arabia. His basic concept was that people should have a place in this world and not left to beg in the streets. Johnson came to this from many sources, including an energetic and fervent Christianity. Johnson was not a Leveler-in some ways the ancestors of modern socialists-but he was no supporter of the fairly new extremes of capitalism and the beginnings of imperialism either.
