The rapid translation from bench to bedside that has been seen in the application of regenerative medicine to cardiology has led to exciting new advances in our understanding of some of the fundamental mechanisms related to human biology. The first generation of cells used in phase l-ll trials (mainly bone marrow mononuclear cells) are now entering phase III clinical trials with the goal of producing a cell-based therapeutic that can change the outcome of cardiac disease. First generation cell therapy appears to have addressed safety concerns as well as showing "activity" in numerous published meta-analyses. With the knowledge gained to date, the field is moving towards the next generation of cells-the "engineered" cell-that have been developed to display a phenotype that will further enhance the myocardial repair/salvage process. This almanac review covers the latest basic research that may soon have application to humans as well as the results of the latest clinical trials.  (+info)

The issue of gender equity is one of enormous importance to the University. Ensuring that women are afforded equal and fair employment opportunities, at all faculty ranks, is essential if the University is to maintain a world-class faculty, recruiting and retaining the best and the brightest in each discipline. It is also required by anti-discrimination laws, which provide that it is unlawful to make employment decisions on the basis of gender. For these reasons, and in order to assess the status of women at Penn, a joint faculty/administration committee on gender equity published a report in Almanac (December 4, 2001) two years ago that dealt with this issue. The report addressed the distribution of women among the Standing Faculty and Standing Faculty-Clinician Educator ranks, their retention and promotion rates, the number holding leadership positions and endowed chairs, possible salary inequities, and quality of life issues. I can add with truth that no body wishes more ardently to see a good system commenced for raising the condition both of their body & mind to what it ought to be, as fast as the imbecillity of their present existence, and other circumstance which cannot be neglected, will admit. I have taken the liberty of sending your almanac to Monsieur de ...
The field of interventional cardiology continues to progress quickly. The efficacy of percutaneous interventions with newer generation drug-eluting stents has advanced a lot over the last decade. This improvement in stent performance has broadened the level of indication towards more complex interventions such as left main and multi-vessel PCI. Major improvements continue in the field of medical co-therapy such as antiplatelet therapies (bivalirudin, prasugrel, ticagrelor) and this will further improve outcomes of PCI. The same is true for intravascular imaging such as ultrasound IVUS and optical coherence tomography OCT. However, interventional cardiology has become a rather broad field, also including alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, etc. At the moment, the fastest growing area is the structural interventions, especially for aortic valve stenosis (transcatheter aortic valve implantation TAVI) and for mitral regurgitation (mitral clipping). This review covers ...

While council members said they could not bend the rules for the church, several agreed to place a sign on the East McMurray Arrowhead Trail bridge during weeks not otherwise taken. The Peters Township High School Thespians have requested use of the bridge for a banner display from March 7-March 23. Members also suggested the church contact area businesses with digital signs, and told Abrew and Benya church members could place signs no larger than 6-square feet in private front yards. Also suggested was the church could attach fish fry advertisements for six weeks on the bottom of its off-premise sign on Valley Brook Road and on the directional, off-premise sign at the intersection of Washington and Valley Brook roads. ...
The councilman has said that, while he supports the firefighters, he believes that council violated its own home rule charter. The vote took place on Feb. 11 and, according to Harrison, did not, per the home rule charter, become effective until March 13. However, the ordinance was submitted to the Allegheny Bureau of Elections on Feb. 13 to meet the Feb. 19 deadline for referendum questions to be place on the May 21 ballot. ...
Accepted on December 14, 2011.. Introduction. Cardiomyopathies are myocardial disorders in which the heart muscle is structurally and functionally abnormal in the absence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, valvular disease and congenital heart disease, sufficient to cause the observed myocardial abnormality. They are classified into a number of morphological and functional phenotypes that can be caused by genetic and non-genetic mechanisms. A few key themes have been dominant in 2010 to 2011, foremost of which are the use (and interpretation) of increasingly sophisticated genetic analyses and the use of new non-invasive imaging techniques to study clinical phenotypes. There were few advances in treatment reported and it remains clear that there is a need for properly conducted randomised trials in all forms of cardiomyopathy.. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). HCM is defined by the presence of myocardial hypertrophy unexplained by loading conditions. It is a genetic disorder ...
The widespread application of specialist clinics for early evaluation of patients with chest pain has focused attention on the effectiveness of diagnostic testing. In a study of nearly 400 000 patients with suspected coronary artery disease, the diagnostic yield of cardiac catheterisation was only 37.6%, leading to calls for better strategies for risk stratification.1 As pointed out in correspondence, the low yield was probably due to verification bias, itself a consequence of basing referral decisions in low- risk populations on non-invasive tests such as exercise ECG.2 Similar considerations prompted the NICE guideline group to recommend a more selective approach to non-invasive testing based on a careful clinical assessment of disease probability in patients presenting with stable chest pain.3 For those, with unequivocal histories at the extremes of diagnostic probability (,10% or ,90%) no diagnostic tests were considered necessary, while for patients with a high probability of disease ...
We must capitalize on our special strengths to define specific and targeted academic opportunities in order to secure and differentiate our position among international research universities of the first rank. In realizing Franklins vision and the strategic objectives that emerge from it, we have identified five interdisciplinary areas in which we believe Penn is most likely to leverage its historic and contemporary strengths and successfully differentiate itself during the next eight years. The Urban Community Goal: As one of the nations premier academic institutions, Penn can and should be a nationally recognized leader in urbanism. Philadelphia, the nations fifth largest city, is a microcosm of the challenges facing American cities today. Our location creates many opportunities for model partnerships, analysis of the critical problems confronting cities, and the design and testing of new approaches to urban revitalization. We already have much strength in this area. Under the Urban Agenda ...

Guthrie continued to traverse the country and in 1940 met Pete Seeger at a folksong rally in California. Together they formed the Almanac Singers with Lee Hayes and Millard Lampell, which in turn inspired the Almanac House, a co-operative apartment in New York s Greenwich Village which became the focus of the East Coast folk movement. In 1942 Guthrie joined the short-lived Headline Singers with Leadbelly, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, before beginning his autobiography, Bound For Glory, which was published the following year. He and Houston then enlisted in the merchant marines, where they remained until the end of World War II, after which Guthrie began a series of exemplary recordings for the newly-founded Folkways label. The artist eventually completed over 200 masters which provided the fledgling company with a secure foundation. Further sessions were undertaken for other outlets, while Woody retained his commitment to the union movement through columns for the Daily Worker and People s ...

Articles and other contributions from writers, readers and cyclists across North America are served up in a rapid-fire, multi-course meal of thought provoking evangelism. I finish one letter to the editor which highlights the fragility of cycling and the mortality everyone faces then I jump to a tangential review of "The Great Muppet Caper" which reinforces the spirit to pedal forward or fall to that same inevitable mortal end like a puppet without a hand. Then on to a thoughtful and very funny interview with Jonny Waldman of San Franciscos Zero Per Gallon about the cost of cycling. Repeatedly, I read my own unarticulated thoughts about daily riding, history, transportation and our shared future. Words so in sync with my daily ponderings that they felt like cairns on the trail reassuring me that Ive found the path.. I strongly recommend picking up a copy to anyone with bikes-on-the-brain - and even more so to those without. The focus on pro-bike inspiration rather than anti-car politics is ...
Last November, Champaign resident Scott Willenbrock read in this column the story of another local man and University of Illinois faculty colleague, Phil Krein, who was installing solar panels on the roof of his garage. For Willenbrock, a professor of physics, the timing of that column was perfect.. Thats because he was in the midst of a project to make his own familys two-story colonial home, a conventional structure built in 1929, zero-net energy. In other words, they would generate on-site as much or more energy than they would use over the course of a year.. "Its one thing to build zero-net energy from the ground up," Willenbrock said to me, citing examples such as the Equinox House built by Ty and Deb Newell in Urbana. In that case, he pointed out, you can take advantage of a whole range of opportunities to insulate and weather-seal, and maximize the benefits of direct sunlight. "My question was, what about people who live in older houses, what can we do?". Willenbrocks question was ...

The Writers Almanac with Garrison Keillor: Halleys Comet by Stanley Kunitz, and the literary and historical notes for Thursday, August 7, 2008.
Author Alex Palmer Haley knew he had roots in northwest Alabama, he just couldnt prove it. He had only an oral history passed down through generations of his family and a family legend that a plantation overseer in Marion County was the father of slave Alec Haley, Alex Haleys grandfather.Chris Haley, the son of Alex Haleys brother Julius, may now have lent truth to the story, simply by swabbing cells from his cheek. It was only family history for us, said Chris

Our very own Nettle Meadow Farm, makers of the delightfully sinful Kunik, are going o be featured on the new Food Network show, Will Work for Food next Monday, March 30th, and again on April 5th. Check out the calendar at saxelbycheese.com for air times. Nettle Meadow, a beautiful and rustic creamery nestled in the southern Adirondack state park, is as unlikely a cheese story as your bound to find. Started by Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase in a zany online real estate transaction from California, Nettle Meadow has blossomed into a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week cheese operation. Kunik, their signature cheese, is a rich triple creme crafted from the milk of their herd of goats and spiked with a bit of Jersey cream from a neighboring cow dairy. See what it takes to be a cheese maker and goat herd! Who knows, you might get bitten by the farmstead cheese bug and want to try it out for yourself ...

In the late winter of 1775, as the British Army occupied Boston and tensions between the Americans and Great Britain mounted, Samuel Adams took some preventive measures. If war came, he reasoned, the British would most probably send an army down from Canada along the line through Lake Champlain, Lake George, and the Hudson River. This maneuver, if successful, would cut off New England from the rest of the colonies and make the task of coordinating American resistance difficult indeed.. Therefore, Adams dispatched John Brown, a lawyer from western Massachusetts, on a journey to Canada to sound out Canadian attitudes toward possible American independence, and to check on the condition of the northern wilderness forts which had played such an important role in the French and Indian War. Foremost among these was Fort Ticonderoga, dubbed by the British the Gibraltar of America, a stone star fort originally built by the French at the chokepoint between Lake Champlain and Lake George. It had passed ...

Another quality he shares with my daddy is that of being a protector. Ive always felt safe with my daddy, and once I started getting old enough to think about marriage, I knew I wanted someone that would make me feel safe (I actually had a list).......yall all know that Im a worry-wort to the nth degree, so I knew that feeling safe was a must have. Ive always felt safe with Brad in every circumstance. He has directional sense like nobody else I know, and for someone who can get lost in a paper bag, thats a good thing. He can fix stuff, just like my daddy....and if something stumps him, hes not too proud to ask daddy for help. And, darn it, I love that too. He doesnt have an ounce of pride in his whole body. Along the sames lines, he doesnt feel the need to share his opinions with anyone else. Unlike me, who shares everything that I know and love with everybody; Brad wont give you an opinion unless you ask for it, and even then, youll have to press him for the particulars. And, its ...

It is amazing how radically the beach can change from visit to visit. I did not recognize the mouth of the Sioux River when we got there. For a long time the mouth of the river spanned about a hundred yards, but here it was, narrowed down to a stones throw by a new sand beach that has completely cut off the backwater that has been there as long as I have been a visitor. It must have been one whale of a storm that deposited thousands and thousands of yards of sand and changed the course of the river, but it will be a great place to cast a plug into the depths of the river mouth, and a fine destination for those August sun bathers and sand castle builders who care to walk the distance from the parking area ...

What to do. The best strategy is to avoid being bitten in the first place. The methods you use to avoid ticks work for chiggers also: stay away from bushy, woodsy places. Tuck your pants legs into your boots. Take a hot, soapy shower as soon as you get home. And dash a little powered sulfur around your ankles; that will repel the chiggers. Fill an old sock with flowers of sulfur (see your druggist), and just beat your ankles with it before you head into the garden. Sulfur is a good inorganic miticide ...

In the past such cranes would indicate construction of new major buildings or infrastructure. I knew immediately what these cranes represented; the dismantling of community history. The cranes are beginning to dismantle the last of the giant ore docks, constructed nearly a century ago during the heyday of iron ore mining in the region. Back then great steamers tied up at the docks, to be filled with iron ore from the iron ranges, brought to Ashland by rail to be shipped to the steel mills of Gary, Cleveland, Buffalo and other great Midwest manufacturing centers. Jobs were plentiful, paid well, and the citys population was double what it is now. Those ore docks have been an icon of Ashland and the region for a hundred years, once pointed to by all with pride, and with confidence in the future. In later years the ore docks were pointed to with pride in the city and the regions past. There has been great lamentation in recent years, not for the economic decline of the city and the region, for few ...
Howard Sterns career is one of the most inspiring and hilarious success stories of the information age. The timid little boy, became a tortured adolescent outcast and eventually a thoughtful and tenacious communicator who cheerfully destroyed stale, corporate, macho radio culture and replaced it with the sometimes pornographic, passionate, political energy of working class male truth. His audience grew by the millions and he expanded the medium by dominating the syndication landscape and building a strong creative arterial highway to television. His boundless creative vision met legal resistance from the FCC. Now his show expands across the planet via satellite and internet technology. Howard Stern cannot be kept down. He has inspired legions of leaders and artists and workers. This film is the first touching chapter of his extraordinary life and meteoric rise. Being a working man isnt easy. Howard understands.. ...

But these fears of the virtual are not new. The move from the physical world to a more virtual world has been going on for a very long time. I was reminded of this as I was reading T.J. Stiles National Book Award-winning biography, The First Tycoon, The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt. In the first decades of the 19th century, the economy consisted of individual proprietors and limited partnerships. As the first corporations began to be chartered to build canals and railroads, the concept of what constituted a business began to become untethered from the hard and comforting reality of the physical world. The structure of the corporation not only created a new entity that had a legal life of its own (including legal immortality), the stock issued by the corporation began to move away from an accounting-based recognition of the value of the corporations real property. Stocks began to be issued for financial reasons and were now free to seek their value in the open market. This uncoupling of ...
by Herman Beavers. It is perhaps too common to think that holding the hand of a toddler while crossing a busy street is an apt metaphor for the mentoring relationship, especially when it comes to fostering undergraduate research. Beyond the obvious miscue of infantilizing the student, approaching mentoring relationships with this mindset has the unintended consequence of communicating a lack of faith in the mentees abilities. In order to avoid falling into this pattern, Ive identified three tenets for mentoring undergraduate research that I hope will lead to a satisfying experience for both mentors and mentees. At a time when Penn seeks ways to be more inclusive, mentoring is perhaps the most efficacious way both to ensure that we identify students possessing the capacity to do independent research and that in doing so, we help them realize their fullest potential. In a departure from the standard approach, I will begin with the third tenet and end with the first. And so the third tenet of ...
To make an invention, even to possess the talent to do this, was, however, not enough. Capital and plant and the commercial ability to win acceptance for ones product from the public were needed. Now, the "business talent" for promoting an invention and bringing it to market, as Jermey Bentham, the philosopher of utilitarianism, had written long ago, seemed to occur in men "in inverse proportion to the talent for creating inventions." As Bentham defines the problem, your typical "poor inventor" must somehow "penetrate the antechamber of the rich or the noble whom it may be necessary to persuade… Admitted to their presence, how will the necessitous man of genius behave when he has arrived there? Often he will lose his presence of mind, forget, stammer…and retire, indignant that his merits should be misappraised." Obsessed with his overruling idea, he remains unware of related problems and practical conditions which must be dealt with before his novel product can be brought to general use. ...

First is the encouragement to seek an understanding of nature. This urging is inspirationally conveyed by the whole book, but is in greatest concentration in the monthly and geographic essays. Most people still havent a clue about the plants and animals they walk and drive past every day. (I will be bold like Leopold and suggest these things although I cannot provide statistics.) The average city-dweller does not know the names or the life histories of more than two or three of the "weeds" that poke through the cracks in his walkway, much less the little arthropods that dwell on those. Suburbanites see more of the land community around them, but are nearly as ignorant. Rural folk have a better track record in some ways, but much rural activity is often concerned with converting land to human use rather than working with it or cultivating its natural bounty. And most rural people do not have more than a passing acquaintance with the animals and plants with which they share their home life and ...

1961: Escapee is no dummy: A 31-year-old Bloomsbury man, an inmate at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, "employed an elaborate ruse" to make his escape. Guards at the prison discovered a stack of benches against the inside of a 14-foot prison wall. A rope made of twisted bedding was hanging down the outside of the wall. He had carefully constructed a dummy and left it in his bed. He had stuffed pajamas with bedding and wadded paper to simulate his body and placed a plaster head on the pillow. The head was complete with glued human hair, apparently collected at the prison barbershop. On the head was a pair of earphones used by prisoners when listening to the prison radio system. The escaped prisoner formerly lived in Phillipsburg, Blairstown and New Village. He was arrested in 1951 for stealing cattle. In 1956 he was arrested for selling a tractor on which a bank held title and for burglaries in Easton. The alarm issued following his escape described him as unarmed and probably not ...

By Frank Chamberlain. Cotton has been one of the major cash crops for Erath County and the rest of Texas since the late 19th century. It represents 35% of the entire crops harvested in Texas, and a quarter of the cotton produced in the entire nation is grown in the state. Throughout the twentieth century, Texas has led all other states in cotton production in most years. In fact, the state legislature designated cotton as the official state fabric in 1997. [Texas Almanac 380, 593-594]. Cotton was first recognized as a valuable commodity in Erath County around 1880. At this time, a railroad was laid through the region which allowed easy transportation of cotton bales. Previously, growing cotton was not a viable economic option due to the difficulties in transporting the product. Soon, nearly fifty gins were established throughout the county, with half a dozen located in both Stephenville and Dublin alone. These area gins were producing around 40,000 bales per year by the turn of the century. ...

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy in women with operable breast cancer is routinely used in some countries for staging the axilla despite limited data from randomized trials on morbidity and mortality outcomes. We conducted a multicenter randomized trial to compare quality-of-life outcomes between patients with clinically node-negative invasive breast cancer who received sentinel lymph node biopsy and patients who received standard axillary treatment. METHODS: The primary outcome measures were arm and shoulder morbidity and quality of life. From November 1999 to October 2003, 1031 patients were randomly assigned to undergo sentinel lymph node biopsy (n = 515) or standard axillary surgery (n = 516). Patients with sentinel lymph node metastases proceeded to delayed axillary clearance or received axillary radiotherapy (depending on the protocol at the treating institution). Intention-to-treat analyses of data at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery are presented. All statistical tests were ...
At 9:04 pm Eastern Daylight Time on May 31st, the full moon over North America will turn blue.. Not really. But it will be the second full moon of May and, according to folklore, that makes it a Blue Moon.. If you told a person in Shakespeares day that something happens "once in a Blue Moon" they would attach no astronomical meaning to the statement. Blue moon simply meant rare or absurd, like making a date for "the Twelfth of Never.". But "meaning is a slippery substance," writes Philip Hiscock of the Dept. of Folklore, Memorial University of Newfoundland. "The phrase Blue Moon has been around a long time, well over 400 years, and during that time its meaning has shifted.". The modern definition sprang up in the 1940s. In those days the Maine Farmers Almanac offered a definition of Blue Moon so convoluted even professional astronomers struggled to understand it. It involved factors such as ecclesiastical dates of Easter and Lent, tropical years, and the timing of seasons according to the ...
