It became a crown colony in 1933, achieving independence in 1964. The name possibly comes from a pre-Indoeuropean root mel, high, referring to its rocks, but a more picturesque origin derives the name from the Greek melitta or melissa, honey, with reference to its early fame for its honey production. Two new sesquiterpenes from Alisma orientalis. (1/3)

Two new sesquiterpenoids named alismorientols A (1) and B (2) were isolated from the rhizomes of Alisma orientalis collected in Sichuan province, People's Republic of China. Their structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic analyses (1D and 2D NMR data including HSQC, HMBC, COSY, and ROESY) and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) bioassay revealed that compound 1 showed moderate anti-HBV activity in vitro with IC50 for HBsAg: 1.1 microM, for HBeAg: 14.7 microM.  (+info)

The rhizomes of Alisma orientale and alisol derivatives inhibit allergic response and experimental atopic dermatitis. (2/3)

The 70% ethanol extract of the rhizome of Alisma orientale (Alismatis rhizome) (AOE) was prepared and found to significantly inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX)-catalyzed leukotriene (LT) production from rat basophilic leukemia (RBL)-1 cells and beta-hexosaminidase release by antigen-stimulated RBL-2H3 cells. It also attenuated delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction in mice. Among the three major triterpene constituents isolated (i.e., alisol B, alisol B 23-acetate, alisol C 23-acetate) as active principles, alisol B and its 23-acetate strongly and significantly inhibited LT production and beta-hexosaminidase release between 1-10 microM. On the other hand, all these alisol derivatives significantly and strongly inhibited DTH response after oral administration. In addition, AOE (200 mg/kg/d) was for the first time found to considerably alleviate hapten-induced dermatitis symptoms in NC/Nga mice, an animal model of atopic dermatitis. These results indicate that alisol derivatives possess inhibitory activities on immediate-type as well as delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions and may contribute to the anti-allergic action of AOE.  (+info)

An oral anti-fungal drug treatment for toe nail fungus may produce side effects. But the above mentioned Chinese medicine is cheap and effective towards toe nail fungal infection. There is also a "Fungo Lotion" that can be use to kill the fungus that spreads beneath or around the nails. The above mentioned "Fungo Lotion" contains melia, dictamium, borel and cnidium in a vinegar-sugar combination solution. This solution acts as a poison for the fungus and thus dies ...
The peri said that with the bottom number crossing 90 in the evening, the past history, and the previous consistent pattern of +10/+5 points every 7-10 days with the last 3 births, she was inclined to send my wife right to the hospital. We were at **** ("the baby factory") because that was the only office with an open appt for today. We are delivering at **** where they have their other office, so we came up with a "compromise." She sent my wife home to continue bedrest and do the 24 hour. If the blood comes back with anything tomorrow - into the hospital. If the urine comes back with protein - into the hospital. If the top number crosses 170 or that bottom number crosses 95, into the hospital. In the meantime, I am to check BP at least 3 times a day and she is to see the peri once a week ...

In the Enoteca di Palo, we entered while the owner was being interviewed by Public TV and was in the process of describing the merits of the Monte di Grazia Tintore no less! We were amazed. The interview over, Lou DiPalo (we think it was he) took us through his range and we immediately found a white we had never heard of: Mantonico. A not so quick Google throws up the slightly worrying information that Mantonico (or Montonico) Nero is nothing else by a synonym for Gaglioppo but fortunately the white Mantonico is something completely independent - Un vitigno misterioso, sicuramente proveniente dalla Grecia, deriverebbe, infatti, dalla voce "mantonikos", che significa indovino, profeta. Three Australian Sisymbrium orientale and one Brassica tournefortii biotypes are resistant to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides due to their possession of an ALS enzyme with decreased sensitivity to these herbicides. Enzyme kinetic studies revealed no interbiotypic differences within species in Km (pyruvate) (the substrate concentration at which the reaction rate is half maximal) but a greater Vmax (the rate when the enzyme is fully saturated with substrate) for two of the resistant S. orientale biotypes over susceptible levels. F1 hybrids from reciprocal crosses between resistant and susceptible biotypes of S. orientale showed an intermediate response to chlorsulfuron compared to the parental plants. ALS herbicide resistance in S. orientale segregated in a 3:1 (resistant:susceptible) ratio in F2 plants with a single rate of chlorsulfuron, indicating that resistance is inherited as a single, incompletely dominant nuclear gene. Two regions of the ALS structural gene known to vary ...
Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a prime reason for numerous failed oncotherapy approaches. In the present study, we investigated whether Alisol F 24 acetate (ALI) could reverse the MDR of MCF-7/DOX cells, a multidrug-resistant human breast cancer cell line. We found that ALI was a potent P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibitor, in the Caco-2-monolayer cell model. ALI showed a significant and concentration-dependent cytotoxic effect on MCF-7/DOX cells in combination with doxorubicin by increasing intracellular accumulation and inducing nuclear migration of doxorubicin. However, ALI had no such effect on MCF-7 cells. In addition, ALI also promoted doxorubicin-induced early apoptosis of MCF-7/DOX cells in a time-dependent manner. These results suggest that ALI can enhance chemosensitivity of doxorubicin and reinforce its anti-cancer effect by increasing its uptake, especially inducing its nuclear accumulation in MCF-7/DOX cells. Therefore, ALI could be developed as a potential MDR-reversing agent in cancer
