Pneumonia from Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in a red panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens). (2/5)

A 9-year-old, male, captive red panda (Ailurus fulgens fulgens) in an urban zoo in the United Kingdom presented with respiratory distress and weight loss. The animal was euthanatized, and a postmortem examination was performed. The lungs were diffusely consolidated with extensive mineralization. Microscopically, there was extensive obliteration of normal pulmonary architecture by sheets and coalescing nodules of partially mineralized fibrous tissue and granulomatous inflammation centered on large numbers of nematode larvae and eggs. First stage nematode larvae were isolated from lung tissue and were characterized as Angiostrongylus vasorum on the basis of their morphology and sequencing of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene and the entire second internal transcribed spacer. Although A. vasorum has previously been reported in red pandas in a zoological collection in Denmark, this study is the first reported case in the United Kingdom and occurs against a background of geographical spread and increased incidence of disease in domestic and wild canids. Angiostrongylus vasorum should be considered a differential diagnosis for respiratory disease in the red panda and taken into account when planning parasite and pest control programs for zoological collections.  (+info)

The red panda is found in a mountainous band from western Nepal through northeastern India and Bhutan and into China, Laos and northern Myanmar. The species also lives throughout mountainous areas of southwestern China. Red pandas only live in temperate forests in the foothills of the Himalayas. They reside at altitudes generally between 1500 and 4800 meters where the temperature is generally cool, and there is little annual variation. A bamboo understory grows in these forests and provides the bulk of the red pandas diet. However, these patches of bamboo are only found in narrow bands throughout the red pandas range. Thus, although red pandas are distributed across thousands of miles of territory, they are restricted to these small, fragile areas.. The red pandas diet mostly consists of bamboo, very unusual for a mammal. Their broad teeth and strong jaws allow them to chew bamboos tough leaves and stalks. They also have a small, bony projection on their wrists that helps them grip bamboo ...

To genetically evaluate red pandas both in zoos and in Nepal. The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a charismatic, beautiful but threatened flagship species addressing Himalayan conservation issues. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists the conservation status of red pandas as vulnerable, with an estimated population of less than 10,000 adult individuals surviving in the wild. This status is currently under review. The species is elusive and sightings are particularly rare due to its low densities, biology and inaccessibility of its habitat. Most of the previous work on their status has been based on counting their scats. Scats, but also hair or urine (in snow), are sources of DNA and enable conservationists and researchers to draw various valuable conclusions in assessing the status of a target species. Located at the conservation genetics group of the Senckenberg Research Institute, our international project aims to establish a non-invasive genetic monitoring scheme for the genetic ...
Zoo keepers monitor the duo via a remote camera mounted in the nest box. "They sleep most of the time, but we also see Xiao grooming herself and the cub," said Lacey. Xiao leaves the nest box several times a day to eat climb in the exhibit. Xiao and her cub spend nearly all of their time tucked in a nest box within the red panda exhibit, where Xiao nurses, grooms, and sleeps next to her cub. This is natural behavior for red pandas, who nest in hollow trees in the wild. Cubs typically remain in the nest box for about three months, which means zoo guests have little chance of seeing the cub until late August or early September.. Three to four times a week, zoo keepers distract Xiao with a tasty bamboo branch and quickly weigh the cub. So far, the cub is gaining weight, and has more than tripled her birth weight of 139 grams to 454 grams (about one pound). Twice a week, they perform a more thorough exam on the cub, checking for any abnormalities.. The cubs eyes are now open, and she makes ...

The fur on a red panda was a new experience for me as it is soft thick and dense to protect them from cooler temperatures and fuzzy / rugged looking at times. So it wasnt a simple brushstroke I was after showing singular hairs as such, but a rough matted appearance to represent the wooley fuzzy look. I experimented with different techniques and found the best approach was to have your brush almost dry with the paint on it giving short quick bursts of direction, layering and movement is so important when capturing fur on any animal. ...
The Smithsonians National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute celebrated several births recently. During the past several weeks, 31 new residents have been born, many of which were endangered species. A short-eared elephant shrew was born May 8 at the Zoos Small Mammal House. A red panda gave birth to two surviving cubs May 27 at SCBI. This species is vulnerable because of habitat loss. Red pandas live in the cool temperate bamboo forests in parts of China, Nepal and northern Myanmar. There are fewer than 10,000 adult red pandas left in the wild ...

Coronaviruses are a genus of bugs that cause respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, sometimes mild and sometimes fierce, in humans, other mammals and birds. They became infamous by association in 2003 because the agent for severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, is a coronavirus. That one emerged suddenly in southern China, passed from person to person and from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, then went swiftly onward by airplane to Toronto, Singapore and elsewhere. Eventually it sickened about 8,000 people, of whom nearly 10 percent died. If not for fast scientific work to identify the virus and rigorous public health measures to contain it, the total case count and death toll could have been much higher ...

When French zoologist Frédéric Georges Cuvier described the Red Panda in 1825, he thought the animal was a type of raccoon, and so placed it in the Procyonidae. It was British zoologist John Edward Gray who placed it in its own family, Ailuridae, in 1843 based on differences in its physiology and behavior. At one time the Red Panda has even been considered to belong to a new and ultimately rejected family called the Ailuropodidae together with the Panda Bear. This theory was rejected after the recognition that the Panda Bear is, as its name suggests, a true bear within the family Ursidae ...
Big changes are happening at the red panda exhibit. Were saying goodbye to two old friends, hello to a new one, and maybe preparing for a new arrival.. Zoo fans got to know Maliha the red panda cub in 2014. Maliha was born to mother Xiao and father Junji on June 9. A team of zoo keepers and veterinarian staff monitored the little cub closely for the first few months, while the path to her exhibit remained closed in an effort to minimize disturbances. Near the end of the 2014 season, Maliha did venture out into her exhibit and zoo guests had a chance to meet her before we closed in October.. Zoo staff is happy to report that Maliha is still thriving and that the Fort Wayne Childrens Zoo has received a new breeding recommendation for Xiao!. The breeding of red pandas is overseen by the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a program of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. The goal of the SSP is to maximize genetic diversity in zoo-dwelling populations of endangered and threatened animals.. What does all ...

With its 733,643 people, Bhutan is the 163rd largest country in the world by population. It is the 135th largest country in the world by area with 38,394 square kilometers. In 1865, Britain and Bhutan signed the Treaty of Sinchulu, under which Bhutan would receive an annual subsidy in exchange for ceding some border land to British India. Under British influence, a monarchy was set up in 1907; three years later, a treaty was signed whereby the British agreed not to interfere in Bhutanese internal affairs, and Bhutan allowed Britain to direct its foreign affairs. This role was assumed by independent India after 1947. Two years later, a formal Indo-Bhutanese accord returned to Bhutan the areas annexed by the British, formalized the annual subsidies the country received, and defined Indias responsibilities in defense and foreign relations. Marwell Zoo is set in 140 acres beautifully landscaped grounds in Hampshire. It is quite an expensive day out but well worth it. I have been to other zoos in the past and often felt let down by the way the enclosures are laid out that you dont get to see the animals very well. Marwell, however, does this very well. We saw all the animals - even the elusive Red Panda (well some of it sleeping up in the tree!). The whole park is just a delight, you are able to see the animals really well and up close, there is lots of information about them and their natural habitats and conservation information too. The park also has lots of areas to picnic and cafes, an education centre and adventure playgrounds for the children, including this big slide that Imogen describes as being like a big elephants trunk, we all had a go at this one (climbing up inside the pyramid bit wasnt easy for the adults though!). But hey it was great fun ...

Genera In Family: +- 1500 genera, 23000 species: worldwide, many habitats. Note: Flower and head types differ in form and sexual condition. A disk flower has a generally radial corolla, with a cylindric tube, expanded throat, and generally 5 lobes. Disk flowers are generally bisexual and fertile but occasionally staminate with reduced ovaries. Discoid heads comprise only disk flowers. A radiant head is a variant of a discoid head, with peripheral disk flower corollas expanded, often bilateral. A ray flower corolla is bilateral, generally with a slender tube and flattened petal-like ray (single lip composed of generally 3 lobes). Ray flowers are generally pistillate or sterile (occasionally lacking styles). Radiate heads have peripheral ray flowers and central disk flowers. Disciform heads superficially resemble discoid heads, with pistillate or sterile flowers that lack rays, together with or separate from disk flowers. A ligulate flower is bisexual, with a bilateral, generally ephemeral corolla ...

Health in Bhutan is one of the governments highest priorities in its scheme of development and modernization. Health and related issues are overseen by the Ministry of Health, itself represented on the executive Lhengye Zhungtshog (cabinet) by the Minister of Health. As a component of Gross National Happiness, affordable and accessible health care is central to the public policy of Bhutan. The Constitution of Bhutan charges the Royal Government with ensuring a "safe and healthy environment," and with providing "free access to basic public health services in both modern and traditional medicines". The Ministry of Health has provided universal health care in Bhutan since the 1970s. Health care infrastructure and services are planned and developed through Five Year Plans (FYP) of the Ministry of Health. The second democratically appointed Health Minister, Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, is the head of the Ministry of Health. Two major pieces of Bhutanese legislation establish a framework for personnel and ...
Bhutanese architecture consists of Dzong and everyday varieties. Dzongs in Bhutan were built as fortresses have served as religious and administrative centers since the 17th century. Secular lordly houses emerged as a distinct style in the late 19th century during a period of relative peace in Bhutan. Throughout its history, Bhutan has mainly followed the Tibetan tradition of Buddhist architecture. The Driglam Namzha codifies the traditional rules for the construction of the dzongs as well as ordinary buildings. Under the direction of an inspired lama the fortress is constructed by citizens who historically participated as part of their tax obligation to the state. Modernly, however, traditional structures are built by wage laborers, straining the governments ability to repair and preserve dzongs in particular. Traditional architecture remains alive in Bhutan. As recently as 1998, by royal decree, all buildings must be constructed with multi-coloured wood frontages, small arched windows, and ...

Polylychnis is a monotypic genus endemic to the Guiana Shield. Results from Tripp (in press) place the genus as highly nested within Ruellia. Morphologically, it is very similar to Ruellia, and indeed shares a similar pollen sculpturing. It differs perhaps only by having small projections on the nectary that surrounds the ovary base. However, Ruellia ovaries have never been systematically surveyed to an extent that permits a thorough examination of this potential difference. Based on molecular data and morphological similarity, the new combination Ruellia fulgens (Bremek.) E. Tripp was recently made.. ...
As my plane glides over the lush, green forest on the side of the mountains and descends into the narrow valley where the airport is located, I start to feel ...happy? Yes, happiness is the motto of the country of Bhutan-which is actually a kingdom. Interestingly, Bhutan is known for its development philosophy of Gross National Happiness. While working to finalize the poverty mapping work that our World Bank team has been collaborating on with Bhutans National Statistics Bureau (NSB) and the Gross National Happiness Commission (GNHC), I realized that I am happy not just because I have had the opportunity to be in such a beautiful place, but also as I have had the chance to work with some highly dedicated, capable (and yes, happy!) civil servants. The poverty-mapping exercise in Bhutan was carried out by a joint team of staff members from the NSB and the World Bank. The team uses a

Bhutan is a small Himalayan country experiencing vast changes as its traditional, Buddhist, collectivist culture meets Westernized culture in the process of globalization. The significant differences in culture and the idealization of the West has led to an increase in mental health issues in Bhutan, especially among the youth population. The government has recognized this and supports the growth of mental health professions. Currently, there are few mental health workers in Bhutan, but they have recently initiated a Bachelors-level counselor training program and have provided brief training to teacher counselors in schools to better address the rising problems. However, there is no information about how to internationalize the counseling profession to fit Bhutanese culture, and specifically to be most beneficial for clients. In this phenomenological study, I interviewed twelve Bhutanese mental health clients about their experiences with counseling. Their responses ultimately showed that the development

What could be cuter than a baby panda cub? How about three baby panda cubs. Earlier this year three baby panda cubs were born at the Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, China. The first baby panda born was a female and her two brothers were born within the next four hours. The triplets are the only surviving panda bear triplets in the world.. The pandas are now 100 days old, weigh 11 pounds and have two teeth each. They are healthy and growing bigger and stronger every day. Dong Guixin, general manager of Chimelong Safari Park, said that physical exams show that the pandas are all healthy and doing well.. They are doing so well that the park is going to start putting them on display for visitors to see. The exhibit will open on Wednesday, but will only be open for a short time each day. The pandas will need to get used to the attention and since they are still so young, they still need a lot of care and attention form their handlers.. ...

But the Eastern Himalayas, a region spanning Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, north eastern India and the far north of Burma, is also one of the areas most under threat from climate change, a report by WWF warns.. It is feared the impacts of a warming climate, such as melting glaciers and flooding, will exacerbate existing environmental threats including logging, overgrazing, the wildlife trade and pollution.. Already only a quarter of the regions original habitat, which includes the lowland home of Asian elephants, clouded leopards, cobras and geckos and the high northern region where snow leopards, red pandas and blue sheep are found, remains.. The region harbours 10,000 plant species, 300 mammals, 977 bird species, 176 reptiles and 269 types of freshwater fish, has the highest density of the Bengal tiger and is the last bastion of the greater one-horned rhino, WWF said.. To characterize the computed tomography (CT) features of thoracic lesions caused by infection with Angiostrongylus vasorum, pre- and postcontrast CT was performed in six experimentally infected Beagles 13 weeks postinoculation and in four of these 9 weeks postchemotherapy. Findings were compared with survey radiographs and necropsy findings. A multicentric bronchoalveolar pattern more pronounced at the lung periphery was present radiographically. On CT, the predominant abnormality underlying this alveolar pattern was multiple large nodules merging to areas of consolidation, and containing air bronchograms of varying extent. These nodular changes corresponded to histopathologic granulomata, consisting mainly of macrophages, multinucleated giant cells, and lymphocytes that had accumulated around larvae and eggs. Morphologically, no bronchial changes were observed on CT or histologically. Quantitatively, however, on CT there was evidence of bronchial thickening at 13 weeks postinoculation and mild ...

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is the etiological agent of one of the most infectious diseases of domestic dogs, also known as a highly prevalent viral infectious disease of carnivores and posing a conservation threat to endangered species around the world. To get a better panorama of CDV infection in different Orders, a retrospective and documental systematic review of the role of CDV in different non-dog hosts was conducted. The bibliographical data were collected from MedLine/PubMed and Scopus databases. Data related to Order, Family, Genus and Species of the infected animals, the presence or absence of clinical signs, mortality, serological, molecular or antigenic confirmation of CDV infection, geographic location, were collected and summarized. Two hundred seventeen scientific articles were considered eligible which includes reports of serological evaluation, and antigenic or genomic confirmation of CDV infection in non-dog hosts. CDV infects naturally and experimentally different members of the

Fossa (animal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaFossa (animal) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most of the details of reproduction in wild populations are from the western dry deciduous forests; determining whether or not certain of these details are applicable to eastern populations will require further field research.[15] Mating typically occurs during September and October,[4] although there are reports of its occurring as late as December,[15] and can be highly conspicuous.[9] In captivity in the Northern Hemisphere, fossas instead mate in the northern spring, from March to July.[16] Intromission usually occurs in trees on horizontal limbs about 20 m (66 ft) off the ground. Frequently the same tree is used year after year, with remarkable precision as to the date the season commences. Trees are often near a water source, and have limbs strong enough and wide enough to support the mating pair, about 20 cm (7.9 in) wide. Some mating has been reported on the ground as well.[15]. As many as eight males will be at a mating site, staying in close vicinity to the receptive female. The female ...

Ferret - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaFerret - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In common with most domestic animals, the original reason for ferrets being domesticated by human beings is uncertain, but it may have involved hunting. According to phylogenetic studies, the ferret was domesticated from the European polecat (Mustela putorius), and likely descends from a North African lineage of the species.[25] Analysis of mitochondrial DNA suggests that ferrets were domesticated around 2,500 years ago, although what appear to be ferret remains have been dated to 1500 BC.[26] It has been claimed that the ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate ferrets, but as no mummified remains of a ferret have yet been found, or any hieroglyph of a ferret, and no polecat now occurs wild in the area, that idea seems unlikely.[27] Ferrets were probably used by the Romans for hunting.[28][29] Colonies of feral ferrets have established themselves in areas where there is no competition from similarly sized predators, such as in the Shetland Islands and in remote regions in New Zealand. ...
