*Wikipedia:United States Education Program/Courses/JHU MolBio Ogg 2012/Section 83

This will be a semester-long assignment, with milestones at various times to help ensure that progress is being made.. Students will be assigned to groups of two or three students each, and each group will have main responsibility for one Wikipedia article, and will act as a peer reviewer for one other group's article. The goal of the assignment is to make a substantive contribution to a Wikipedia article on a topic of Molecular Biology. Each group will choose an article that's in need of work, and your goal is to improve upon the article, within the timeframe of this semester.. Group members should, as much as possible, help each other out with questions about how to do things on Wikipedia. You should strive to communicate the Wikipedia way -- on user talk pages; but (especially before Unit 3) you can use the Blackboard discussion forum if you need to. If, as a group, you still have a question or a problem, don't hesitate to contact the Online Ambassador.. ...

*Q&A software

... is often provided to corporate and specialist sites, so the site and its users can be asked questions as well as provide or receive expert answers to them. This kind of software is particularly useful for responding to questions regarding specific industries. Users may learn by regularly answering questions or exchanging views with other industry specialists using the website. In the late 1990s, a free online service called Answer Point provided by Ask Jeeves, was launched, allowing users to ask questions and with the help of other people, have them answered. The slogan of the service, "The Ask Jeeves Answer Point is the place where you can ask and answer questions. Have a question? Post it! Know the answer? Post it!"[2], indicated the main function of it, which inspired the creation of later Q&A sites. The last archived version of the Ask Point was from late 2001 when it still allowed registration. Since then, more and more sites have begun to offer Q&A services. Google launched ...

*Privacy-enhanced Electronic Mail

PEM is a de facto file format for storing and sending cryptography keys, certificates, and other data, based on a set of 1993 IETF standards defining "privacy-enhanced mail." While the original standards were never broadly adopted, and were supplanted by PGP and S/MIME, the textual encoding they defined became very popular. The PEM format was eventually formalized by the IETF in RFC 7468. Many cryptography standards use ASN.1 to define their data structures, and Distinguished Encoding Rules (DER) to serialize those structures. Because DER produces binary output, it can be challenging to transmit the resulting files through systems, like electronic mail, that only support ASCII. The PEM format solves this problem by encoding the binary data using base64. PEM also defines a one-line header, consisting of "-----BEGIN ", a label, and "-----", and a one-line footer, consisting of "-----END ", a label, and "-----". The label determines the type of message encoded. Common labels include "CERTIFICATE", ...

*List of important publications in computer science

Description: One of the papers that started the field of on-line learning. In this learning setting, a learner receives a sequence of examples, making predictions after each one, and receiving feedback after each prediction. Research in this area is remarkable because (1) the algorithms and proofs tend to be very simple and beautiful, and (2) the model makes no statistical assumptions about the data. In other words, the data need not be random (as in nearly all other learning models), but can be chosen arbitrarily by "nature" or even an adversary. Specifically, this paper introduced the winnow algorithm.. ...

*Internet addiction disorder

... , more commonly called problematic Internet use (PIU), refers to excessive Internet use that interferes with daily life. Addiction is defined by Webster Dictionary as a "compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly: persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful". Problematic Internet use is also called compulsive Internet use (CIU), Internet overuse, problematic computer use, or pathological computer use (PCU), problematic Internet use (PIU), or Internet addiction disorder (IAD)). Another commonly associated pathology is video game addiction, or Internet gaming disorder (IGD). IAD was originally proposed as a disorder in a satirical hoax by Ivan Goldberg, M.D., in 1995, although some later researchers have taken his essay seriously. He used this term because it was a suitable fit to his parody. This idea he conjured was to demonstrate ...

On May 4, 2016, AT&T announced that it had entered into a new contract with Synacor for the company to take over the majority ...

*Internet in Thailand

Thailand obtained internet access in 1996 as the third country in South East Asia. Since then, the use of the Internet has become more popular in the cities and also more accessible to different areas in the country. 41 million people have regular access, just under 2/3rds of the population as of June 2016.According to a survey by Ookla in 2015, Thailand also has the 6th fastest Internet speed at 18.9 Mbit/s behind Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan and China. Broadband Internet is readily available in most cities and towns, and now are expanding to many smaller villages and in the countryside. As the statistics have shown, the majority of Internet users in Thailand still rely on dial-up access. TOT operates a nationwide local rate number, 1222, allowing dialing to most Internet service providers. Dial-up prepaid Internet packs can be readily bought in convenience stores and other places. Subscribers of fixed telephone lines by True Corporation have access to dial up Internet by dialing a ...

*Internet Standard

An Internet Standard is characterized by a high degree of technical maturity and by a generally held belief that the specified protocol or service provides significant benefit to the Internet community. Generally Internet Standards cover interoperability of systems on the Internet through defining protocols, message formats, schemas, and languages. The most fundamental of the Internet Standards are the ones defining the Internet Protocol.. An Internet Standard ensures that hardware and software produced by different vendors can work together. Having a standard makes it much easier to develop software and hardware that link different networks because software and hardware can be developed one layer at a time. Normally, the standards used in data communication are called protocols.. All Internet Standards are given a number in the STD series. The series was summarized in its first document, STD 1 (RFC 5000), until 2013, but this practice was retired in RFC 7100.. Documents submitted to the IETF ...

... uses a zone-based security framework that groups sites based on certain conditions, including whether it is an Internet- or intranet-based site as well as a user-editable whitelist. Security restrictions are applied per zone; all the sites in a zone are subject to the restrictions. Internet Explorer 6 SP2 onwards uses the Attachment Execution Service of Microsoft Windows to mark executable files downloaded from the Internet as being potentially unsafe. Accessing files marked as such will prompt the user to make an explicit trust decision to execute the file, as executables originating from the Internet can be potentially unsafe. This helps in preventing accidental installation of malware. Internet Explorer 7 introduced the phishing filter, that restricts access to phishing sites unless the user overrides the decision. With version 8, it also blocks access to sites known to host malware. Downloads are also checked to see if they are known to be malware-infected. In Windows ...

*Kaspersky Internet Security

Version 7.0 introduced a redesigned GUI. Components were renamed and reorganized; the Anti-hacker module was renamed to the Firewall, and the Anti-Spy module was integrated with the Privacy Control module. PC World described the new interface as "intuitive" and "great-looking".[6] Parental controls were introduced, with specific settings for different age categories, such as "child" or "parent". Within age categories are content categories, such as drugs or violence. Users can manually configure profiles. Filtering profiles can be associated with users. Since content is filtered at the network level, the feature will work with any Internet browser. The filter relies on a database of known URLs and can analyse websites in real-time. Attempts to access forbidden URLs are logged, and sites visited are tracked as well, raising privacy issues. Limits on Internet access may be set based on time, and chat rooms along with webmail sites can be manually blocked.[7] Spam filtering integrates with ...

All of them are connected with the central idea of designing or exploiting algorithms with the finite-time convergence property. In particular, the non-asymptotic estimation techniques (numerical differentiation, finite-time differentiators or observers) constitute a central objective of the project, explaining the name Non-Asymptotic estimation for on-line systems. Below, these 3 challenges will be shortly described in relation to the above indicators.. The researches developed by Non-A are within the continuity of the project-team ALIEN in what concerns the algebraic tools that are developed for finite-time estimation purposes. However, Non-A also aims at developing complementary estimation techniques, still aiming at the finite-time performance but based on the so-called higher-order sliding mode algorithms, interval estimation techniques and, as well as, fixed-time algorithms.. Non-A also wants to confront these theoretical challenges with some application fields:. ...

According to research conducted by Aurora, Ont.-based Web portal HR.com, 75 percent of organizations capture information about the recruitment process the old-fashioned way. Based on a survey of more than 500 senior managers and executives, the recently published "Talent Management Metrics: A Survey of Current Practices" reports that even among larger companies companies with 20,000 employees or more the proportion using an online system to access recruitment data is less than 60 percent. The payoff for those that go the online route, though, is substantial, according to the papers author, HR.com Director of Research Claude Balthazard, Ph.D. Balthazard says that online systems offer enhanced use of recruitment metrics, easier processes, and employees who are more than twice as likely to be satisfied with their recruitment metrics interface ...
Thanks for gathering all this information into one place. Can we add some links to standards of genome annotation? In some bacteria for one example the tefA gene is annotated as a second copy of the fusA gene. The fusA encodes EF-G, the ribosomal translocase, while tefA encoded the ribosomal back-transloacase. They are quite similar in sequence, stucture and function so it is understandable that some annotators would confuse the two.. ReplyDelete ...
Internet-based interventions have been developed to improve access to audiovestibular health care. This review aimed to identify outcomes of Internet interventions for adults with hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular disorders. Electronic databases and manual searches were performed to identify studies meeting eligibility for inclusion. Fifteen studies (1,811 participants) met the inclusion criteria, with nine studies targeting tinnitus distress, five considering hearing loss, and one for vestibular difficulties. Only the tinnitus and hearing loss Internet intervention studies were eligible for data synthesis. Internet-based interventions for hearing loss were diverse. Overall, they showed no significant effects, although a statistically significant moderate effect (d = 0.59) was found after removing the study with the highest risk of bias (as a result of high attrition). Most Internet-based interventions for tinnitus provided cognitive behavioural therapy. They yielded statistically ...

Please welcome this weeks guest blogger, Tim Moore, from Disability Secrets and My Disability Blog. Please see the rest of Tims bio at the end of his post.. Recently, the Social Security Administration added a disability application process to their online services. The SSA website offers a disability starter kit, an online disability application, and an online disability report form.. While this may seem more convenient at first glance, there are still some problems associated with the SSA internet application process. And these problems add weight to the argument that a potential claimant might consider bypassing the online system in favor of visiting a field office and applying in person.. What does that argument, or rationalization, actually entail? Well, first of all, even if you complete your disability application and disability report online, you still need to provide the Social Security Administration with signed SSA-827 medical release forms. This can be done easily in person while ...

Chimarrão" and "tererê" are maté (dried, toasted and milled Ilex paraguariensis leaves and stemlets) beverages widely consumed in South America. This paper describes the application of HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS method for the identification and quantification of caffeoylquinic acids (CQA), flavonol glycosides and purine alkaloids in these beverages. The beverage samples were prepared from commercial lots of maté from Southern Brazil. The caffeoylquinic acids, 4,5-diCQA, 3-CQA, 5-CQA, and 4-CQA were the major compounds, having 238-289, 153-242, 183-263, and 123-188 μg/mL, respectively, for chimarrão and 206-265, 122-218, 164-209, 103-169 μg/mL, respectively, for tererê. n automated method for analyzing free non-cholesterol sterols in human serum using online solid phase extraction-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry is proposed herein. The method allows the determination of three phytosterols (sitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol) and two cholesterol precursors (desmosterol and lanosterol). The analysis of sterols in human serum is critical in the study of cholesterol-related disorders, such as inherited familial hypercholesterolemias. Special effort was made to isolate the analytes from the serum lipoproteins, their natural conveyance through the bloodstream. The sample treatment consisted of a Bligh-Dyer extraction followed by dilution of the extract. This treatment allowed the sample to be injected into the online system and ensured the correct detection of the analytes, while avoiding the matrix effects commonly related to serum samples. The analytical performance showed linear ranges that covered two orders of magnitude, with correlation coefficients

Im thrilled to announce something new today that has nothing to do with Sparky the Music Theory Dog (though Im sure hed approve): Braille Music Notator, an online system Ive been working on since early last year. Its still in development - Im calling it an "alpha" version because there are still a few features Id like to add - but its at the point where I could use some more folks tinkering with it.. What is it? Well, there are a few utilities out there - free and otherwise - that will translate a music score from a program like Finale or Sibelius into braille music notation, and they work pretty well as far as automatic translation systems go. But even if a translation system is advanced enough to avoid sometimes hilarious mistranslations, the result still often feels clunky and inefficient.. The idea behind Braille Music Notator is to encourage us sighted folk to learn a little braille music - its really not that hard - so that we can create legible, well-designed braille scores from ...

0014]Exemplary embodiments of the present invention disclose a non-transitory computer-readable recording medium comprising an executable program, which when executed, performs the steps of providing a search area for providing a search service on a screen of the bidirectional broadcasting terminal in response to key input of a user input unit. The step includes receiving a search request from a user terminal during a broadcast program. The step also includes determining whether the search request matches with criteria of a search engine for providing a first search window to the search area, wherein the first search window is to display a representative keyword that is automatically provided as an input for searching. The criteria for the matching is based on an identification of the broadcast program. The step includes determining whether the search request matches with the criteria for providing a second search window formed adjacent to the first search window. And the second search window is ...
Geologists study rock layers to locate water and other valuable resources that form over millions of years. These collected studies also helped work out our understanding about how the Earth formed and was changed by climate and movements of the earths crust. More than 500 distinct geologic units have been identified so far in Illinois.. Geologists have discovered a lot about Illinois in the 40 years since the publication of the reports used initially to build ILSTRAT. But without a major paper publication to gather them all together, those revisions and revelations remain scattered in presentations, papers, and notebooks of individual investigators. Many of these pending updates await capture in ILSTRAT by those same investigators, and going forward it will spur regular updates as a ready repository for new discoveries to advance the scientific picture. In effect, ILSTRAT provides both a baseline for understanding the stratigraphy of Illinois, and more importantly, a framework to update and ...

The release reads: PHILIPS SURVEY REVEALS ONE IN 10 AMERICANS BELIEVE ONLINE HEALTH INFORMATION SAVED THEIR LIFE Survey findings point to the potential of integrated health information technologies and how they will transform the continuum of healthcare A recent U.S. survey commissioned by Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a leading health and well-being company, found that consumers believe web-enabled, mHealth and mobile apps are part of their health care solutions and key to living long lives. For example, one in 10 Americans (11 percent) surveyed believe that if it were not for web-based health information, "they might already be dead or severely incapacitated." In addition, a quarter of those surveyed use symptom checker websites or home-based diagnosis technology as much as they visit the doctor, while another 27 percent use these interactive applications instead of going ...

by Sharon Jordan, Labour Ward Co-ordinator, North Bristol Trust.. I have been training midwives, obstetricians and anaesthetists in Neonatal Resuscitation for the last 11 years, and it is rewarding to see how confidence grows in a skill that is not practiced frequently. As Labour Ward Co-ordinator you are often first on the scene to answer an emergency bell and initiate resuscitation of a compromised baby, but midwives only really gain practice in this area if the baby they deliver themselves is sick, and even then, may hand over the resuscitation to the help that has arrived, as they need to attend to the womans care, usually to manage the third stage of labour. In the training sessions, role-play is used but the resuscitation is not carried out in real time. This enables the midwives to develop a deeper understanding of the physiological process in each step of the resuscitation. There is always an initial hesitation when a volunteer is requested to step forward to show how they would ...
How to Find, Access and Understand Online Health Information: And how to communicate what you find to your health care professional. A Haiku Deck by kamrcr
A trunked voice/data subscriber is provided that operates in either a voice mode, or one of three data modes. In a first data mode, the voice/data subscriber monitors the voice control channel to enable rapid participation in a voice call. In a second data mode, the subscriber monitors an assigned data channel until either commanded to change modes or until there has been no data activity for a predetermined time interval. Lastly, the subscriber may operate to remain in the last mode used so that, over time, the subscriber resides primarily in the mode predominately used. According to the invention, the voice/data subscriber must request a channel for each voice transmission. However, a data channel request need only be transmitted in no data channels are currently reallocated. If a data channel has been allocated, the subscriber may transmit at any time without first requesting access.
Juno Online Services, also called simply Juno, is an Internet service provider based in the United States. It is a subsidiary of United Online, which in turn is a subsidiary of investment bank B. Riley Financial. United Online is also the parent of NetZero and BlueLight Internet Services. Juno was founded in May 1996 by Charles Ardai, Brian Marsh and Clifford Tse, with equity capital provided by the D.E. Shaw Group and headquarters in the same Midtown Manhattan building as Shaw. In August 1996, it began a free e-mail service -- a customer would install the proprietary Juno client which would allow them to send and receive email of about 35 kilobytes in size. Version 1 did not offer attachments or other features. The user could write emails with the Juno client and would periodically sign in by dial-up. Upon doing so, the Juno client would upload any emails the user had written, download any new incoming emails in the online mailbox, and download targeted advertisements, which were displayed in ...
This review examines the application of online interventions to the treatment of obesity. The unprecedented prevalence rates of overweight and obesity worldwide are indicative of the need to develop efficacious treatment alternatives. While research suggests that diet, physical activity and behaviour therapy are core components of effective obesity treatment programs, their ability to penetrate large portions of the population is limited. The empirically verified effectiveness of online interventions for disorders such as depression and social phobia, coupled with unparalleled rates of internet access, suggest that online interventions for overweight and obesity are a feasible and logical treatment modality. A limited number of randomised controlled trials reviewed in this article have evaluated the efficacy of this treatment alternative. Results are promising and encourage further use, development and empirical research in this area ...

Home monitoring of refractory epilepsy patients has become of more interest the last couple of decades. A biomedical signal that can be used for online seizure detection at home is the electrocardiogram. Previous studies have shown that tonic-clonic seizures are most often accompanied with a strong heart rate increase. The main issue however is the strong patient-specific behavior of the ictal heart rate features, which makes it hard to make a patient-independent seizure detection algorithm. A patient-specific algorithm might be a solution, but existing methods require the availability of data of several seizures, which would make them inefficient in case the first seizure only occurs after a couple of days. Therefore an online method is described here that automatically converts from a patient-independent towards a patient-specific algorithm as more patient-specific data become available. This is done by using online feedback from the users to previously given alarms. By using a simplified ...

I am working on my Thesis which is basically 2D CFD simulation of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. I need to calculate the torque generated by a wind turbine in order to find Cp. In this regard I am running 2D simulation with sliding mesh technique and saving the case/data file after every 10 degrees of rotation hence I have 36 files for one complete revolution. Now I am reporting the value of forces in X and Y direction (Fx and Fy) from each case/data file for all 3 Blades. Then I calculate Torque on each blade using formula ...

I have had an area of concern (to me) on my nose for over 3 years. Have been to the dermatologist numerous times during this period and she said it was nothing. I finally insisted on a biopsy and it came back as superficial basal cell. They are recommending Mohs surgery but I am nervous about it as it is in a location (right side tip) that could possibly require extensive reconstruction surgery. I had a consult with the surgeon this weekend and he said the lesion appears small and probably wouldnt require reconstruction (forehead flap) but wouldnt know for sure until they did the surgery. I asked about using Aldara and both my dermatologist and Mohs surgeon agreed I could try that and then be reevaluated after that treatment.. Now Im reading all the scary reviews of bad side effects online for Aldara. Cant decide if I should just do the Mohs or try the Aldara.. I had Mohs 13 years ago (also on my nose but on the far side-2 passes). The closure was just 7 stitches and no scars left ...
Want to cross-reference your medical symptoms, read up on heart disease or map out an exercise plan? Simply key a few words into a search engine and youll be bombarded with links to numerous health web sites. These days, all it takes is a computer with internet access and youve got a wealth of health information at your fingertips. The hard part is deciding whether that information can be trusted.. "The world wide web is well-named after its biological counterpart, the spider web," said Glenn Nemec, a Monticello family physician and member of the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians. "The spider has to sift through dust, leaves and grass to get his meal. When it comes to medical information on the web, we humans have the same problem. We need to sort through a lot of junk to get stuff fit for consumption.". So how does the average person figure out whats good or bad information? Family physicians will tell you there is no foolproof way to do it without the help of your doctor - so dont ...

Information diffusion in online social networks has received attention in both research and actual applications. The prevalence of online social networking sites offers the possibility of mining for necessary information. However, existing influence maximization algorithms and newly proposed influence diffusion models do not distinguish between seed nodes (or pilot users) and nonseed nodes and assume all nodes are cooperative in propagating influence. This thesis investigates models and heuristics for noncooperative information diffusion in online social networks. It consists of three parts: tragedy of the commons in online social search (OSS), influence maximization in noncooperative social networks under the linear threshold model (LTM), and influence maximization in noncooperative social networks under the independent cascade model (ICM). Firstly, the tragedy of the commons problem in OSS is considered. I propose an analytical model that captures the behavior of OSS nodes, and, from a ...
We have investigated whether there is evidence of target-directed growth of retinal axons to the tectum, and whether the surface of the rostral brainstem is an obligatory substrate for growing optic axons by transplanting embryonic mouse retinae to the cerebral aqueduct of neonatal rats. Such retinae emit axons that grow dorsally through the brain parenchyma to reach the superficial layers of the superior colliculus either by running dorsally along the midline, or by following a dorsally directed, radially arching course through the brain parenchyma. Studies of the early outgrowth pattern from transplanted retinae, and comparison studies of the axonal outgrowth from similarly placed cortical grafts suggest that outgrowth of retinal axons is target-directed and specific to optic axons.

Objective: We assessed the causes of imbalance of oxygen transport by continuously measuring oxygen consumption (VO2) during hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in pigs. Methods: Six pigs (17.2±1.6 kg) underwent hypothermic (32°C) CPB for 180 min with 120 min of aortic crossclamping (ACC). An AMIS 2000 mass spectrometer was adapted for the on-line measurement of VO2. Arterial lactate was measured at the beginning of CPB, the end of hypothermia, before and 10 min after ACC release, 20 min later, and at the end of CPB. Results: Arterial lactate increased from 1.8±0.7 to 5.1±1.8 mmol/L during CPB. Hypothermia reduced VO2 by 0.63±0.29 ml/min/kg per °C, but lactate increased to 4.2±1.5 mmol/L ( ...

We characterized ED patients pre-visit Internet search terms using a qualitative approach and looked at the relationship between these search terms and the patients final diagnoses. We found the majority of patients searched online for symptoms rather than for specific diagnoses. Previous studies using web-analytics of Internet queries similarly noted that the majority of searches focused on symptoms.11 However, in contrast to studies in other settings, in this sample of ED patients very few searches focused on treatment. For example, in a sample of orthopedic patients 21% sought information about treatment, and in a sample of melanoma patients 96% sought information about treatment.12,13 The higher ratio of treatment-related searches in the outpatient clinic and specialty context contrasts with our ED data. However, our report is unique in illuminating the frequency and nature of Internet search strategies that may serve as the genesis of the decision to seek unscheduled ED ...

Green tea as most as people know, it comes from leaves of tea plants. Nowadays people like to drink it very much. In my opinion, you should know about the benefits of green tea for three reasons. First , drinking green tea can repress cholesterol which leads to high blood pressure. Green tea polyphenols are effective in lowering blood sugar. Moreover, catechins are effective for preventing cancer and it can help prevent the decay of your tooth. Second, green tea can make your weight loss. If you drink green tea, you can lower cholesterol because it increases the bodys rate of burning calories. Drinking green tea regularly will increase your metabolism and help burn energy safely and naturally. It prevents obesity. Finally, high grade green tea from 100% quality tea leaves is the most beneficial. In conclusion, green tea is good for health because it contains good nutrients. Have you got any ideas about green tea? ...

Another benefit of fertile conversion is that not all of the plutonium produced in the fuel is fissioned before the fuel is discharged. The residual plutonium at discharge (typically about 1% of the heavy metal mass) can potentially be recovered in reprocessing and either recycled in a thermal reactor (as is the case today in France) or in a fast reactor. Thermal reactor plutonium recycle as Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuel gives approximately a 15% increase in the energy recovered from the original uranium ore. On the other hand, plutonium recycle in a fast reactor gives the possibility of much higher energy recovery in a breeding cycle, with the possibility of a fully self-sustained fuel cycle with minimal uranium ore input required. In principle, it is possible to attain about a 50 to 100-fold improvement in the energy extracted from uranium ore. This is the justification for fast reactors, which would allow a country to be strategically independent of the uranium market. However, the practical ...

Abstract: What do searchers find when they look for literature on homosexuality? This question has profound implications for older as well as younger gays in their coming out, as well as in their subsequent identity development. Library records provide credible data to answer the question, since they represent relatively free sources of information, unlike data from bookstores, publishers, and some World Wide Web sites. The records of WorldCat, the worlds largest union database of library records, comprise over 30 million records listed in the Online Computer Library Center. For the purposes of the study, 18,757 records listed under "Homosexuality," "Gay Men," and "Gays" were downloaded; records for "Lesbian" and "Lesbians" were not examined. Findings of the study suggest that while there has indeed been considerable growth in terms of the quantity of gay literature produced since 1969, such gains maybe offset by the deteriorating quality of cataloging copy, which makes the experience of ...

Nursing students need substantial access to information resources that include books, journal articles, research databases and videos as well as library services such as classes, research support and interlibrary loan. Online nursing programs present unique challenges to libraries because libraries were traditionally oriented to serve on-campus students and faculty. When Duquesne introduced the first online PhD in Nursing in 1997, libraries were in the early stages of offering online access to information resources and services. Twenty years later, libraries offer similar collections and services to online and on-campus learners. Specific library services to online nursing students include:. Collections. Libraries have been rapidly adding electronic collections for the last 20 years. Online access to PubMed, CINAHL, and other research databases has been widely available since the 1990s, and subscriptions to electronic nursing and medical journals have become virtually universal. Librarians make ...
Whether called "pump bump" (for association of shoe pumps causing irritation on the back of the heel), Haglund, bone spur or exostosis of the calcaneous, is normally the same CPT code 28118. Excision of a bone spur through the Achilles tendon can also be reported using 28118 because the attaching or reattaching of the Achilles tendon to get to this spur would be considered inherent in the removal of the spur. CPT code 28118 represents, "Ostectomy, calcaneus." Now CPT code 28119 represents, "Ostectomy, calcaneus; for spur, with or without plantar fascial release," which would be reported when there is a spur on the bottom of the foot and a plantar fascial release may also be performed.. ...

Seven East African maize populations were crossed in a diallel series. The seven parents and 21 crosses (excluding reciprocals) were evaluated at two locations; Jimma and Mettu, in the Southwestern part of Ethiopia in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The objectives were (1) to determine the extent of genetic diversity among the populations based on the level of yield heterosis of their F1 progenies and (2) to identify heterotic populations that could be used as sources of inbred lines in a hybrid breeding programme. The study indicated wide genetic diversity among some of the populations as indicated by high level of yield heterosis over the mid- and high-parent. Hence, Kitale Composite B (KCB) and Abo-Bako, Ukuruguru Composite A (UCA) and Abo-Bako, and UCA and KCB were found to be the most genetically diverse populations showing high-parent yield heterosis of 55.3, 41.3 and 36.0%, respectively. On the other hand, A-511 was observed to be genetically closely related ...
Hydroxyl radical (.OH) formation by neutrophils in vitro requires exogenous iron. Two recent studies [Britigan, Rosen, Thompson, Chai & Cohen (1986) J. Biol. Chem. 261, 17026-17032; Winterbourn (1987) J. Clin. Invest. 78, 545-550] both reported that neutrophil degranulation could potentially inhibit the formation of .OH, but differed in their conclusions as to the responsible factor, myeloperoxidase (MPO) or lactoferrin (LF). By using a previously developed spin-trapping system which allows specific on-line detection of superoxide anion (O2-) and .OH production, the impact of MPO and LF release on neutrophil .OH production was compared. When iron-diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid-supplemented neutrophils were stimulated with phorbol myristate acetate or opsonized zymosan, .OH formation occurred, but terminated prematurely in spite of continued O2- generation. Inhibition of MPO by azide increased the magnitude, but not the duration, of .OH formation. No azide effect was noted when MPO-deficient ...

Online courses are distributed on the Internet through Wake Techs Blackboard server, providing students with a convenient alternative to traditional on-campus classes. Online courses begin on the first day of the term. Students taking an online course must have access to a personal computer with Internet connection and browser software. Hybrid courses combine regular classroom meetings with online instruction distributed through Blackboard, reducing the number of hours a class meets on campus. Check the course schedules in WebAdvisor to determine when your hybrid course will meet on campus.
