In RADIOTHERAPY, radiation dosage is expressed in gray units (Gy). In RADIOLOGIC HEALTH, the dosage is expressed by the product of absorbed dose (Gy) and quality factor (a function of linear energy transfer), and is called radiation dose equivalent in sievert units (Sv).Organotechnetium Compounds: Organic compounds that contain technetium as an integral part of the molecule. These compounds are often used as radionuclide imaging agents.Organophosphorus Compounds: Organic compounds that contain phosphorus as an integral part of the molecule. Included under this heading is broad array of synthetic compounds that are used as PESTICIDES and DRUGS.Urinary Bladder: A musculomembranous sac along the URINARY TRACT. URINE flows from the KIDNEYS into the bladder via the ureters (URETER), and is held there until URINATION.Echinostomatidae: A family of flukes (TREMATODA) characterized by a collar of spines at their anterior end. It is transmitted to humans by bites of infected ticks and occurs only in North and South America. Characteristics include a sudden onset with headache and chills and fever lasting about two to three weeks. A cutaneous rash commonly appears on the extremities and trunk about the fourth day of illness.Rickettsia rickettsii: A species of gram-negative, aerobic bacteria that is the etiologic agent of ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTTED FEVER. Its cells are slightly smaller and more uniform in size than those of RICKETTSIA PROWAZEKII.Tilia: A plant genus of the family TILIACEAE. Some species in this genus are called Limetree which is nearly the same as the common name for lime (CITRUS AURANTIIFOLIA). Some people are allergic to the POLLEN.Tsuga: A plant genus in the family PINACEAE, order Pinales, class Pinopsida, division Coniferophyta. They are coniferous evergreen trees and should not be confused with hemlock plants (CICUTA and CONIUM).Rickettsial Vaccines: Vaccines for the prevention of diseases caused by various species of Rickettsia.Encyclopedias as Topic: Works containing information articles on subjects in every field of knowledge, usually arranged in alphabetical order, or a similar work limited to a special field or subject. (From The ALA Glossary of Library and Information Science, 1983)EncyclopediasDictionaries, MedicalDictionaries as Topic: Lists of words, usually in alphabetical order, giving information about form, pronunciation, etymology, grammar, and meaning.Molecular Sequence Annotation: The addition of descriptive information about the function or structure of a molecular sequence to its MOLECULAR SEQUENCE DATA record.Databases, Genetic: Databases devoted to knowledge about specific genes and gene products.Transcriptome: The pattern of GENE EXPRESSION at the level of genetic transcription in a specific organism or under specific circumstances in specific cells.Patents as Topic: Exclusive legal rights or privileges applied to inventions, plants, etc.Oxygenators, Membrane: Devices in which blood and oxygen are separated by a semipermeable membrane, generally of Teflon or polypropylene, across which gas exchange occurs. The membrane may be arranged as a series of parallel plates or as a number of hollow fibers; in the latter arrangement, the blood may flow inside the fibers, which are surrounded by gas, or the blood may flow outside the fibers and the gas inside the fibers. (Dorland, 28th ed)Liquid Phase Microextraction: Miniaturized methods of liquid-liquid extraction.Membranes, Artificial: Artificially produced membranes, such as semipermeable membranes used in artificial kidney dialysis (RENAL DIALYSIS), monomolecular and bimolecular membranes used as models to simulate biological CELL MEMBRANES. These membranes are also used in the process of GUIDED TISSUE REGENERATION.Artificial Organs: Devices intended to replace non-functioning organs. They may be temporary or permanent. Even though Congress set up a framework for the use of the metric system in the nineteenth century,[88][Note 16] the United States continues to use US customary units, based on English measure passed by parliament under the reign of Queen Anne in 1706, for most purposes apart from science and medicine.[89] In Puerto Rico, metric units are widely used due to its Spanish colonial history.[90]. On 10 February 1964, the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology) issued a statement that it was to use SI except where this would have an obvious detrimental effect. In 1968 Congress authorised the U.S. Metric Study, the emphasis of which was to examine the feasibility of adopting SI.[91] The first volume was delivered in 1970.[92] The study recommended that the United States adopt the International System of units,[93] and in 1975 Congress passed the Metric ...
The metric system is the standard system of measurement in science. This module describes the history and basic operation of the metric system, as well as scientific notation. The module explains how the simplicity of the metric system stems from having only one base unit for each type of quantity measured (length, volume, and mass) along with a range of prefixes that indicate multiples of ten.
I have forgotten how many years ago that the Federal Government mandated the introduction of the "metric system". It is still around on many products but it has failed: Restraining orders are measured in feet, weather persons always use Fahrenheit, gasoline is sold by gallons, and meat, fruit, and vegetables are sold by the pound. And the NFL will never use the metric system. ...
A diagnostic X-ray system has an X-ray source that generates an X-ray conical beam, and a panel detector, which has numerous X-ray detection elements arrayed two-dimensionally, opposed to each other so that they can be rotated about the body axis of a subject. CT images of the subject are reconstructed based on projection data acquired by scanning the subject. The panel detector can be offset so that the center of the detecting surface of the panel detector extending in a direction perpendicular to the body axis can be displaced in a direction substantially perpendicular to a reference plane defined with an extension of a straight line linking the focal point of X-rays and a point on the body axis of the subject and with the body axis of the subject.
The International System of Units (Le Système International dUnités or SI) represents a modified version of the metric system that has been established by international agreement and currently is the official measurement system of most nations of the world. The SI promotes uniformity of quantities and units, minimizes the number of units and multiples used in other measurement systems, and can express virtually any measurement in science, medicine, industry, and commerce. In 1977, the World Health Organization recommended the adoption of the SI by the international scientific community. Since then, many biomedical publications throughout the world have adopted SI units
The United States is one of the few countries left in the world who still have not converted to using the Metric System as a standardized system of measurement. The real cause of this trouble is that we are tied to the international system of trade and thus made the victims of international chaos. The things now discussed by the parties are either symptoms or ineffective efforts to escape from the fundamental trouble. So long as we are tied to the international system, it does not matter a rap whether the system in this country is international capitalism or international socialism: or an unworkable mixture of the two, as at present. It is now proved that internationalism will not work for reasons we pointed out years ago. The truth we spoke is now shown to be a fact: unfortunately by the sufferings of the British people and the loss of British greatness. We still have to sell our exports in open competition on the ...
OHB System AG is one of the three leading space companies in Europe and is specialized on the integration of high-tech systems in order to create innovative spacecraft for various applications like, earth observation, navigation or reconnaissance. Particularly in case of optical payloads customer requirements are demanding and the associated systems engineering process is highly complex due to the strong interrelations between the various sub-systems and its multi-disciplinary nature. Requirements on pointing performance of a satellite may serve here as a very illustrative example. Pointing performance refers to the difference between the targeted line-of-sight and the actual viewing direction of the telescope or to knowledge of the actual viewing direction. Contributions to the pointing (knowledge) error can be manifold. Even at highest precision of the attitude and orbit control system (AOCS) of the satellite, there will ...

The aim of this paper is to explain the type(s) of power that the EU, on multiple dimensions and levels, has exerted in reaction to the Russia-Ukraine crisis. The approach developed here is intended to pave the way for new work that treats the EU as a serious actor on the international stage. This does not mean that the EU is necessarily successful overall, but that just like other actors, it uses different forms of power in different situations. This paper seeks to understand the EUs influence in the world while recognizing its embeddedness in an unpredictable and uncertain international system. Does the external context or structure of the international system constrain or enable the EUs exercise of power? And more specifically, to what extent has the Russia-Ukraine crisis serves as a critical juncture and catalyst for shaping the EUs power?. Download the paper (restricted ...
The Metric System (a Letter to the London Times).-Sir: I see that on Wednesday next, the 22d inst., the President of the Board of Trade is to receive a deputation from the Decimal Associations and others to urge on the Government, not merely the adoption of the decimal system of notation, but the compulsory application within two years of the metric system of weights and measures in its entirety. I have been hoping to see a letter in the Times from some person of importance calling attention to this deputation. I fervently trusted I should notice one from your correspondent, Mr. Herbert Spencer, who, a year or so back, contributed a series of thoroughly well-thought-out and logical articles, exposing the fallacy of the metric system; but if any such letter has appeared I have, unfortunately, missed it. I believe this agitation to be largely due to scientific professors who have been brought up on foreign books, and have found it too much ...

Background & Aims: Fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) are used widely in colorectal cancer screening. Programs use the same fecal hemoglobin threshold for colonoscopy referral for men and women, but it is unclear whether FIT performs equally in both sexes. We therefore assessed FIT performance in men and women. Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed, in which a total of 10,008 average-risk subjects (age, 50-74 y) were invited for first-round screening and 8316 average-risk subjects (age, 51-74 y) were invited for second-round screening with a single FIT. Subjects with a hemoglobin (Hb) level of 10 µg hemoglobin (Hb)/g (or =50 ng/mL) feces or higher were referred for colonoscopy. The test characteristics were assessed by sex for a range of FIT cut-off values. Results: In total, 59.8% of men and 64.6% of women participated in the first round (. P < .001). You "uninvent" when you believe that something we use or do that is popular and taken for granted is now regrettable and we should turn back the clock on it. You could probably come up with a few. Here are nine fresh ones from me.. Our Way of Keeping Count.. Our brought-from-England system of inches and yards, and pints and quarts and miles, water freezing at 32 degrees and boiling at 212 and so on, is clumsy and crazy. Well, thats undeniable to anybody who has seen the metric system which is standard to countries big and small all around the world now. We are the big and stupid stand-out.. Metric was a French invention in the late 1700s. It has swept the world. The metric system is infinitely better because it is based on 1 and 10 and 100 all the way up into the zillions.. How better? By making it easy for us to weigh bananas and ...
Amount of substance is a standards-defined quantity that measures the size of an ensemble of elementary entities, such as atoms, molecules, electrons, and other particles. It is sometimes referred to as chemical amount. The International System of Units (SI) defines the amount of substance to be proportional to the number of elementary entities present. The SI unit for amount of substance is the mole. It has the unit symbol mol. The proportionality constant is the inverse of the Avogadro constant. The mole is defined as the amount of substance that contains an equal number of elementary entities as there are atoms in 12g of the isotope carbon-12. This number is called Avogadros number and has the value 7023602214085700000♠6.022140857(74)×1023. It is the numerical value of the Avogadro constant which has the unit mol-1, and relates the molar mass of an amount of substance to its mass. Therefore, the amount of substance of a sample is ...

Metrology is the science of measurement. It involves the formulation of the theoretical principles related to the definition of the International System of Units (Système International d Unités, SI) and the development of the technology for realising these units in practise. Reliable measurement is important all areas of human activity. Decisions are based on measurement results. Incorrect measurement results can lead to incorrect decisions, which may have significant health, economic or environmental consequences. Applications of sources of optical radiation are wide-ranging, including: medical treatment, diagnosis and sterilisation; quality control in production processes; stimulation of plant growth in agriculture; lighting and signalling for transport; interior and exterior lighting for buildings; solar power generation; and earth observation. The spectral power distribution of a source ...

Abstract:The international system is going through a period of fundamental change, which has similarities with earlier periods in history. Such periods of change might usher into war and instability if it turned out to be impossible to arrive at a new international order. The current period of change is characterized by the collapse of a liberal international order, which was established under conditions of Western hegemony. The coming anarchy is the consequence of unforeseen structural changes wrought about by globalization and other developments associated with the global spread of the liberal order.

This Briefing Report was prepared for the seventh ITU Regulatory Colloquium, held at ITU Headquarters in Geneva on 3-5 December 1997. The topic of the Seventh Colloquium was a detailed examination of the present crisis in the international system by which payments are made between countries for international telecommunications services (known, for short, as the "accounting rate" problem). The Colloquium examined in detail alternatives to the present system as well as means by which the system may be adjusted to reflect current realities. ...

Special Rapporteurs can - but dont always - use their special status in effective and innovative ways. As demonstrated by the efforts of Paul Hunt, the former Special Rapporteur on Health, the mandate has the potential to influence issues of concern to womens rights and human rights within the international system. Paul Hunt focused most of his mandate on emphasizing that maternal mortality is and should be treated as a human rights issue. He presented the argument in his 2006 report to the General Assembly; it was the main topic of his visit to India in 2007; the central theme of his 2007 statement to the HRC; and a side panel to an HRC session in 2008, amongst other interventions. His persistence resulted in a 2009 resolution by the HRC that recognized maternal mortality as a human rights issue.[vi] ...

AU - Scarpelli, Marina. PY - 2010. Y1 - 2010. N2 - Surgery, and radiation therapy remain the standard treatments for newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. Nonetheless, these aggressive treatments are associated with decreased quality of life with altered sexual and urinary functions. Using modern risk stratification, several centers have gained significant experience in identifying patients with a low risk of prostate cancer progression and have adopted an active surveillance program with delayed, selective, or curative therapy. Interestingly, only limited numbers of patients under active surveillance require additional treatment. Recent data suggest that delayed treatment does not appear to alter the clinical outcome among those highly selected patients. A better understanding of the molecular ...
All this data is publicly available, in 60+ separate PDF files, from the USGS website.. This excel file also includes data, when provided by USGS (partial datasets), for the following: US capacity utilization rate, company count, plant count, average product price, average natural gas price, and net import reliance, among others.. In addition, it includes the total US ammonia capacity, presented in Table 4 of the Mineral Yearbook (partial dataset 1958-1978, unbroken data 1979-2015).. Ill update this spreadsheet whenever USGS publishes new data (next expected: 2017).. To avoid confusion, the spreadsheet presents raw data given in metric tons (from 1988) in separate rows from raw data given in short tons (up to 1987). In addition to the raw data, the file includes rows of data with unit conversions, creating consistent, usable data series (unit conversions: short/metric tons, and contained nitrogen/product tons).. Note that USGSs "Salient Ammonia Statistics" series extends further back than ...
Low-risk prostate cancer (PCa) patients have excellent outcomes, with treatment modality often selected by perceived effects on quality of life. Acute urinary symptoms are common during external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), while chronic symptoms have been linked to urethral dose. Since most low-risk PCa occurs in the peripheral zone (PZ), we hypothesized that EBRT using urethral sparing intensity modulated radiation therapy (US-IMRT) could improve urinary health-related quality of life (HRQOL) while maintaining high rates of PCa control. Patients with National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) defined low-risk PCa with no visible lesion within 5 mm of the prostatic urethra on MRI were randomized to US-IMRT or standard (S-) IMRT. Prescription dose was 75.6 Gy in 41 fractions to the PZ + 3-5 mm for US-IMRT and to the prostate + 3 mm for S-IMRT. For US-IMRT, mean proximal and distal urethral doses were limited to 65 Gy and 74 Gy, respectively. HRQOL was assessed using the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index

The influence of different brewing conditions on the concentration of the main caffeoylquinic acids (3-caffeoylquinic acid (3-CQA), 4-caffeoylquinic acid (4-CQA), and 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA)) was investigated. For this purpose, twenty-four coffee brews were extracted and analyzed using HPLC-DAD at 325 nm. Our findings demonstrate the great impact of brewing techniques on the caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs) content. The major isomer was 3-CQA, accounting for about 50% of the total CQAs, followed by 5-CQA and 4-CQA, accounting for about 24–36% for each one. The total content of CQAs was in the range of 45.79 to 1662.01 mg/L, found in iced cappuccino and pod espresso, respectively. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that coffee brews, in particular those prepared using pressurized methods, can be considered as the potential sources of antioxidants such as CQAs.

Someone asked me how my blog and newspaper column came to be titled "Bleachers Brew". Its like this, its an amalgam of sorts of two things: The bleachers area in the stadium/arena where I used to sit when I would watch baseball, football, and basketball games and Miles Davis great jazz album Bitches Brew. Thats how it got culled together. I originally planned on calling it "The View from the Big Chair" that is a nod to Tears For Fears second album, Songs from the Big Chair. So there. ...

The candela per square metre (cd/m2) is the derived SI unit of luminance. The unit is based on the candela, the SI unit of luminous intensity, and the square metre, the SI unit of area.. Nit (nt) is a non-SI name also used for this unit (1 nt = 1 cd/m2).[1] The term nit is believed to come from the Latin word nitere, to shine.[2]. As a measure of light emitted per unit area, this unit is frequently used to specify the brightness of a display device. The sRGB spec for monitors targets 80 cd/m2.[3] Typically, calibrated monitors should have a brightness of 120 cd/m2. Most consumer desktop liquid crystal displays have luminances of 200 to 300 cd/m2.[4] High-definition televisions range from 450 to about 1500 cd/m2.. ...
When the six protocols were compared after stratifying patients according to different AS criteria, the University of Toronto protocol had a significantly higher rate of extracapsular extension at 17.1% and pathological T3 disease at 19.1% than the John Hopkins protocol (3.3% extracapsular extension, P=0.05 and 3.3% pathological T3 disease, P=0.03) and PRIAS criteria (8.0% pathological T3 disease, P=0.04) [Table 5]. This observation can be explained by the difference in stringency of the two protocols. The University of Toronto criteria selected patients by two factors only: PSA of ,10 ng/mL and Gleason score of ≤6; PSA density, number of positive biopsy cores, and percentage of core involvement were not considered. On the contrary, the John Hopkins criteria applied very strict criteria: a PSA density of 0.15 ng/mL/mL. In addition, only patients with T1 disease with at most two positive cores during biopsy and no more than 50% involvement of each core were selected (Table 1). Contrary to our ...
Purpose: Risk of suicide is increased among men with prostate cancer. We investigated this association among men with low-risk cancer, usually detected by prostate specific antigen (PSA)-testing. Patients and Methods: Relative risk (RR) of suicide was calculated by use of Poisson regression analysis within the Prostate Cancer data Base Sweden (PCBaSe) 2.0, a nation-wide, population-based database, comparing 105,736 men diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1997-2009 to 528,658 matched prostate cancer-free men. Results: During the first 6 months after diagnosis, there were 38 suicides among men with prostate cancer; incidence rate 0.73 per 1000 person-years (PY) and 30 suicides in the comparison cohort; 0.11 per 1000 PY, corresponding to a RR of suicide of 6.5 (95% confidence interval (CI) 4.0-10). Risk was highest among men with distant metastases, incidence rate 1.25 per 1000 PY, RR 10 (95% CI 5.1-21) but risk was also increased for men with low-risk tumours, incidence rate difference 0.45 per ...
PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility and the early toxicity of focal brachytherapy in highly selected localized prostate cancer patients.. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-one patients underwent a focal brachytherapy between February 2010 and March 2012, representing 3.7% of the cases treated by our group during this period. Patient selection was based on (at least) two series of prostate biopsies and a high-resolution MRI. Only patients with very limited and localized tumors, according to strict criteria, were selected for the procedure. The technique used a real-time procedure with the implantation of free 125I seeds and dynamic dose calculation. The prescribed dose for the focal volume was 145Gy.. RESULTS: The treated volume corresponded to a mean value of 34% of the total prostatic volume (range, 20-48%). For the focal volume, the mean D90 and V100 was 183.2Gy (range, 176-188Gy) and 99.3% (range, 98.8-100%), respectively. The technique was performed in an hour and a half. When compared with a ...

With regard to the pterygopalatine suture, Ghoneima et al. in a clinical investigation conclude that the cited suture cannot be split when tooth-borne expanders are used for rapid palatal expansion [11]. However, MSE has shown that the pterygopalatine suture was split, as the pyramidal process of the palatine bone was pulled away from the medial and lateral plates of the pterygoid process, leaving detectable openings on the CBCT in 16 out of 30 sutures (53%) (Fig. 7). Seven patients showed openings in both the right and left pterygopalatine sutures, one patient in the right suture only, and one patient in the left one only.. The average width of openings between pterygoid plates was 1.4 and 2.2 mm for the right and left suture, respectively. The width depends on the size of the pyramidal process of the palatine bone that presents large variability in shape and size among the population [30]. Also, if partial disengagement of the pyramidal process from the pterygoid process takes place, such in ...

Invented as breath-analyzing products by Smith and Wesson in the late 1950s, but now, breathalyzers are instruments that are utilized in a number of professions to determine the amount of blood alcohol content by analyzing a breath sample obtained from an individual. Literally dozens of breathalyzer models exist, most hand-held. Because of their frequent use as evidence in criminal courts, their design and performance is subject to highly prescribed regulations.. Alcohol is not digested in the body; it is simply absorbed into the tissues of the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines and eventually excreted. In part, alcohol leaves the body via the breath; because the percent of the total blood alcohol that exists this way is predictable, the alcohol content of the breath can be used to calculate the total blood alcohol content, or BAC.. While the principles behind breathalyzers are sound, they can only more or less estimate BAC since they do not measure it directly. An artificially high or low ...

Solstice is Prineville, Oregons sole brewery, and their first winter seasonal (released in 2013, I believe) was a 9-something percent abv strong ale they named "Winter Schnocker." They took that first beer, and put some in a CW Irwin Whiskey barrel from Bend-based Oregon Spirit Distillers, left it for most of the year, and bottled it up special as their first bottled beer in time for the 2014 holiday season. It came out of the barrel at 10.5% abv.. I like what Solstice has been doing and try to get out there for lunch and beers when I can (its a bit of a drive, about 25 miles) and have enjoyed their beers. So I picked up a bottle of this at The Brew Shop out of support for the local brewing scene. Unfortunately, and I hate to say it, it didnt hold up as well in the barrel as I would have hoped. (Unless of course I had a bad bottle.). Appearance: Dark brown, with amber highlights, just like the color of the bottle. Clear with a minimal bit of foam that fell to a thin ring quickly.. X-Ray Detectors are basically those instruments that are employed to gauge the flux, spatial distribution, spectrum, and the other related characteristics of X-Rays. They can be segregated into two major types imaging detectors and dose measurement devices. The analog X-Ray systems normally employ photographic plates and films for image detection. Nevertheless, as there has been a shift in technology from analog to digital X-ray systems, the photographic plates and films are have been substituted by digital image plates that are itself the flat panel detectors.. Flat panel detectors are said to be highly sensitive and they are much faster than a photographic film. As technology and demand for digital X-Ray systems is reaching great heights, the X-ray detectors will call for much stronger structure possessing high transmission capability, temperature endurance, as well as resistance to ionizing radiations. Market size on the basis of type spans flat panel ...
The pterygopalatine fossa (PPF), is an important small anatomic space which communicate the middle cranial fossa, orbital, nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, foramen lacerum and the infratemporal fossa. Represents a major pathway of spread of malignancy and infection in the deep face. It is a pyramidal space with an upper base , located down the orbital apex. The bony structure which delimited the PPF are: - Anterior wall: Maxillary tuberosity. - Posterior wall: the anterior face of the pterygoid apophysis. - Medial wall: vertical lamina of the palatine. - Lateral wall: free. - Superior wall: great wing of the sphenoid. - Inferior wall: is represented by the apex of the pyramid, shaped by the union of the maxillary tuberosity and the pterygoid apophysis. The PPF has 8 communications in form of orifices or osseous ducts. - Anterosuperiorly: communicates with the orbit through the inferior orbital fissure. - Posterosuperiorly: Foramen rotundum and Vidian canal communicates with the middle cranial ...

For these reasons, the U.S. Public Health Service emphasizes that an individual be considered to have serologic evidence of HIV infection only after an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) screening test is repeatedly reactive and another tests such as the Western Blot (WB) or immunofluorescence assay has been performed to validate results. Repeating initially reactive EIA tests increases diagnostic specificity by decreasing the possibility of technical laboratory error. High-specificity, supplemental tests should be conducted by a laboratory with high performance standards. While it is claimed that WB false negatives are low, in clinical trials, 10 to 15 percent of tests produced an indeterminate result. Despite the existence of a licensed WB test, many laboratories use unlicensed WB tests or fail to meet acceptable performance standards. In addition, laboratories often use their own criteria for interpreting test results. Results of proficiency testing studies indicate that the predictive value of both ...

Within the Movember Foundations Global Action Plan Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance (GAP3) initiative, 25 centers across the globe collaborate to standardize active surveillance (AS) protocols for men with low-risk prostate cancer (PCa). A centralized PCa AS database, comprising data of more than 15 000 patients worldwide, was created. Comparability of the histopathology between the different cohorts was assessed by a centralized pathology review of 445 biopsies from 15 GAP3 centers. Grade group 1 (Gleason score 6) in 85% and grade group ≥2 (Gleason score ≥7) in 15% showed 89% concordance at review with moderate agreement (κ = 0.56). Average biopsy core length was similar among the analyzed cohorts. Recently established highly adverse pathologies, including cribriform and/or intraductal carcinoma, were observed in 3.6% of the reviewed biopsies. In conclusion, the centralized pathology review of 445 biopsies revealed comparable histopathology among the 15 GAP3 centers with a low ...

At least 12 different genetic tests for prostate cancer are under development. The two tests currently available are Oncotype DX (Genomic Health, Redwood City, California) and Prolaris (Myriad Genetic Laboratories, Salt Lake City). Both tests can identify which low-risk patients are "truly" at low risk and can be managed by active surveillance and which ones should seek immediate treatment.. Genomic Prostate Score. The Oncotype DX prostate cancer assay can determine whether men with newly diagnosed low-risk prostate cancer (ie, Gleason score of 6) are appropriate candidates for watchful waiting or harbor more aggressive disease sugesting the need for primary treatment with surgery or radiotherapy.. Recently launched by Genomic Health Inc, the Oncotype DX prostate cancer assay is similar (in the sense that it assays gene expression) to the Oncotype DX breast cancer assay used to determine whether women with node-negative early breast cancer should be treated with chemotherapy and whether women ...
June M. Chan, MD, University of California at San Francisco, and co-authors reported that men who exercise vigorously at least 3 hours a week have favorable changes in gene expression patterns in normal prostate tissue. This finding builds on a previous study showing that men with prostate cancer who exercised vigorously more than 3 hours a week were much less likely to have progressive disease or die of prostate cancer, and provides some insight into the mechanisms by which vigorous exercise may be protective against recurrence of prostate cancer.. The study included 70 men diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer who were treated with active surveillance. These men were previously enrolled in a trial of nutritional supplements and provided biopsy tissue at baseline. In the men who reported vigorous exercise at least 3 times per week (n=23), 184 genes were differently expressed in normal prostate tissue versus those who did not exercise 3 times per week (n=47).. Up-regulated genes included known ...
An increasing number of men diagnosed with localized, low-risk prostate cancer are choosing to closely what cyst on ovary fibroid a is their cancer with periodic testing and to defer therapy unless any follow-up testing indicates that the cancer is progressing; this approach is called active surveillance. To women out there, if you reading: it will require patience, change, and consistency but mostly loving yourself enough to understand you are worth the effort. Because the fibroid growths grow in dimensions and amounts the signs and symptoms become severe and intolerable. I dont know aboutt the nhs but I would think they will kick you out asap as they need the beds. CT Scans are not the preferred method to diagnose fibroids, but they can be useful in showing calcified fibroids in particular.
Prostate cancer: >>> the big scam. "What you dont know cant hurt you" may not sound like a very reliable medical maxim.. But when it comes to cancer, you can bet your prostate its true.. Thats because what you DO know usually leads to a surgery that you probably never needed.. And when it comes to prostate cancer surgery,. that means side effects such as impotence and incontinence.. Thats an awfully high price for a little bit of needless knowledge,. and its all because of those needless PSA tests.. Ive been called a lot of unkind words for saying that PSA tests are unnecessary and unreliable,. and now Im waiting for my apologies.. The latest vindication can be found in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute,. where I read a new study that concluded that PSA tests have. led to mass over-diagnosis and mass over-treatment.. At the same time, a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that. surgery to remove low-risk prostate cancer tumors can be delayed for years. with no ...
Tests on the new treatment, carried out at University College London Hospital, showed that around half (49 per cent) of 413 patients with low-risk prostate cancer went into complete remission compared with 13.5 per cent in the control group who were given no treatment. Publishing results of the tests in The Lancet Oncology, lead investigator Professor Mark Emberton, Dean of UCL Medical Sciences and Consultant Urologist at UCLH, said: "This is truly a huge leap forward for prostate cancer treatment.. "In 1975 almost everyone with breast cancer was given a radical mastectomy, but since then treatments have steadily improved and we now rarely need to remove the whole breast.. "In prostate cancer we are still commonly removing or irradiating the whole prostate, so the success of this new tissue-preserving treatment is welcome news indeed.". The therapy, involves injecting a light sensitive drug into the bloodstream and activating it with a drug to destroy tumour tissue, while leaving healthy tissue ...

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is tumour almost exclusively seen in adolescent males, constituting less than 1% of all neoplasms in head and neck. They are benign and locally spreading and are highly vascular in nature and thus prove to be a surgical challenge because of its complex anatomical location. Here, we present a case report of a 18-year-old male presenting with a mass in his left nasal cavity, with recurrent epistaxis and nasal obstruction. Computed tomography imaging revealed a non-encapsulated lobulated heterogeneous mass lesion in the naso-pharynx and left posterior choana of the nasal cavity, extending to pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossa, masseter space of left side ...
Analog X-ray systems, which had major share in the market until 2005, are being replaced by advanced technologies such as computed radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR). Advantages such as low dosage, better image quality, enhanced image storage, and immediate image analysis have made the latter more attractive over conventional analog systems. The availability of image detectors technologies like CCD, CMOS and flat panel detectors are being used to retrofit and convert the old existing analog X-ray units into CR and DR systems; this is driving the up-gradation of analog systems into digital.. Hospital and diagnostic centers are continuously adapting to the change in technology to provide better services for their patients. Concerns over excess radiation exposure, poor image quality, time required, and requirement of large space has forced many to adopt and upgrade into digital X-ray systems. ...

The point is, if you are pregnant I recommend that you make sure that you are getting enough Vitamin D. Start today. Not only does it reduce rates of RSV, your body needs it for cardiovascular health, a thriving immune system and strong bones. One may ask how much is enough Vitamin D and where do I get it?- The latest recommendations (as of November 2010) for daily intake is the same for men and women under age 70, 600 international units, and 400 IU for children. Now there is debate that because of these new study findings, perhaps pregnant women should get more than that. It remains to be seen. The caveat with Vitamin D is that if you take too much it can lead to toxicity. (Vitamin D poisoning can lead to dehydration, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, muscle weakness, irritability, fatigue and kidney stones. Pregnant women have enough issues with those conditions without taking a vitamin supplement that would make them worse.) ...
Difficulties in establishing requirements for vitamin D arise from the limited number of food sources available, lack of knowledge of precise body needs, and degree of synthesis in the skin by irradiation. The amount needed can vary between winter and summer in northern climates. In addition, life-style determines the degree of exposure to sunlight and would therefore influence individual need. This is especially true of the elderly and invalids who do not go outside and therefore may need supplementary vitamin D. Growth demands in childhood, during pregnancy, and during lactation necessitate increased intake. The daily recommendation for young adults is 7.5 mcg and older adults 5.0 mcg. The RDA standard is 10 mcg, or 400 international units (IU), of cholecalciferol daily for children and for women during pregnancy and lactation. One IU of vitamin D is equivalent to biologic activity of 0.025 mcg of pure crystalline vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol). Adults over ...
The plasma HCV RNA level was measured using Roche TaqMan HCV RNA assay. The lower limit of quantification was 25 international units per milliliter (IU/mL) and the lower limit of detection was 10 IU/mL. Two results are reported: 1) Protocol defined SVR: undetectable HCV RNA at 24 weeks after the last planned dose of study treatment without any confirmed detectable HCV RNA between end of treatment visit (up to Week 48) and 24 weeks after last planned dose (up to Week 72); 2) SVR as per FDA guidance (snapshot analysis): undetectable HCV RNA at 24 weeks after the last planned dose of study treatment. Analysis was based only on the HCV RNA assessment in visit window (+/-2 weeks); if there were more than 1 assessment in the window, the last measurement was used ...
The FDA also advised manufacturers of liquid Vitamin D supplements that droppers accompanying these products should be clearly and accurately marked for 400 international units (IU). In addition, for products intended for infants, FDA recommends that the dropper hold no more than 400 IU.. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recommended a dose of 400 IU of Vitamin D supplement per day to breast-fed and partially breast-fed infants. The easiest way to ensure that an infant will not get more than the recommended dose is to use a product supplied with a dropper that will give no more than 400 IU per dose. The AAPs recommendations are provided here ...
The National Institutes of Health recommend people up to age 50 receive 200 international units (IU) of vitamin D per day. This increases to 400 IU after age 51 and 600 IU after age 71. This can come from supplements or sunlight; the University of Cincinnati recommends several 15-minute sessions of sunshine exposure per week.Source:National Institutes of Health: Vitamin D Fact SheetUniversity of Cincinnati: Vitamin D
Finding the cause of your breathing problem may help determine vitamin deficiencies and lead to the right vitamins t you need to add to your diet. As an example, when you are deficient in vitamin C, you are more prone to irregular breathing problems linked to asthma. It is thus recommended that you take approximately 25 to 150 international units of this vitamin to help correct the cause of your breathing problem. Deficiencies in vitamins A, B, D, C and E can all cause breathing problems that are linked to COPD, asthma and chronic bronchitis. ...
