News media coverage of human papillomavirus. (65/796)

BACKGROUND: Now that human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing is being incorporated into cervical cancer screening programs, salient and accurate media information about HPV will be crucial to inform women's screening choices and to manage psychosocial responses to HPV DNA test results. METHODS: The authors conducted a content analysis of 111 news stories about HPV from the 10 most circulated newspapers and from 3 major television networks for the period from January 1995 through July 2002. Stories were assessed for predominant theme (STD, cancer, or new tests); information about symptoms, transmission, prevention, and cancer-causing properties of HPV; screening test descriptions; and recommended screening guidelines. RESULTS: Thirty-six percent of stories primarily were about new tests for HPV or cervical cancer, 30% of stories focused on cervical cancer or its link to HPV, and 27% of stories emphasized sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or genital warts. Seventy-nine percent of stories mentioned that HPV is an STD, and 50% of stories reported that HPV is very common. Twenty-six percent of stories reported that most women with HPV will not develop cervical carcinoma. Of 81 stories that mentioned a screening test for HPV or cervical carcinoma, 38% reported the sensitivity of the test; 30% mentioned wrong, uncertain, or unnecessary test results; and 25% mentioned consequences of such results. CONCLUSIONS: Media coverage of HPV could better fulfill women's educational needs by including information about low-risk and high-risk types of HPV and their differing links to cervical cancer; describing HPV prevention, transmission, and symptoms; explaining the benefits and consequences of HPV testing; and outlining the latest screening guidelines in every story.  (+info)

Citizen centered health and lifestyle management via interactive TV: The PANACEIA-ITV health system. (66/796)

In the context of an IST European project with acronym PANACEIA-ITV, a home care service provisioning system is described, based on interactive TV technology. The purpose of PANACEIA-ITV is to facilitate essential lifestyle changes and to promote compliance with scientifically sound self-care recommendations, through the application of interactive digital television for family health maintenance. The means to achieve these goals are based on technological, health services and business models. PANACEIA-ITV is looking for communication of monitoring micro-devices with I-TV set-top-boxes using infrared technology, and embodiment of analogous H/W and S/W in the I-TV set-top-boxes. Intelligent agents are used to regulate data flow, user queries as well as service provisions from and to the household through the satellite digital platform, the portal and the back-end decision support mechanisms, using predominantly the Active Service Provision (ASP) model. Moreover, interactive digital TV services are developed for the delivery of health care in the home care environment.  (+info)

Children who become active. (67/796)

OBJECTIVES: This article examines factors associated with children aged 4 to 11 becoming and remaining active, and how this differed according to their weight. DATA SOURCE: The data are from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth: cycle 1 (1994/95) for the cross-sectional analysis, and cycles 1, 2 and 3 (1994/95 to 1998/99) for the longitudinal analysis. ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES: Estimates of physical activity levels in 1994/95 among acceptable-weight and overweight/obese children are presented by age, sex and selected activities (TV viewing, playing computer/video games, and hours of physical education at school). Logistic regression models were constructed for children who were inactive in 1994/95, focusing on the selected activities as predictors of adopting and maintaining an active lifestyle. MAIN RESULTS: Factors associated with children adopting and maintaining an active lifestyle differed, depending on their weight. For overweight/obese children, but not for acceptable-weight children, a relatively high number of physical education hours was predictive of becoming physically active, while frequent TV viewing lowered the odds.  (+info)

Dynamics of terminal arbor formation and target approach of retinotectal axons in living zebrafish embryos: a time-lapse study of single axons. (68/796)

In a variety of species, developing retinal axons branch initially more widely in their visual target centers and only gradually restrict their terminal arbors to smaller and defined territories. Retinotectal axons in fish, however, appeared to grow in a directed manner and to arborize only at their retinotopic target sites. To visualize the dynamics of retinal axon growth and arbor formation in fish, time-lapse recordings were made of individual retinal ganglion cell axons in the tectum in live zebrafish embryos. Axons were labeled with the fluorescent carbocyanine dyes Dil or DiO inserted as crystals into defined regions of the retina, viewed with 40x and 100x objectives with an SIT camera, and recorded, with exposure times of 200 msec at 30 or 60 sec intervals, over time periods of up to 13 hr. (1) Growth cones advanced rapidly, but the advance was punctuated by periods of rest. During the rest periods, the growth cones broadened and developed filopodia, but during extension they were more streamlined. (2) Growth cones traveled unerringly into the direction of their retinotopic targets without branching en route. At their target and only there, the axons began to form terminal arborizations, a process that involved the emission and retraction of numerous short side branches. The area that was permanently occupied or touched by transient branches of the terminal arbor--"the exploration field"--was small and almost circular and covered not more than 5.3% of the entire tectal surface area, but represented up to six times the size of the arbor at any one time. These findings are consistent with the idea that retinal axons are guided to their retinotopic target sites by sets of positional markers, with a graded distribution over the axes of the tectum.  (+info)

The decline of smoking in British portraiture. (69/796)

OBJECTIVE: To examine time trends in the portrayal of smoking in a national collection of portraiture and to compare this with the similar trends for television and film. METHODS: A compact disc produced by the National Portrait Gallery in London, UK, was systematically searched for artworks produced in the years 1950 to 1999. A "smoking portrayal" in an artwork was defined as having a cigarette, cigar or pipe in the mouth or hand of a named individual. RESULTS: Out of 1063 artworks included in the analysis, 53 portrayed smoking by identifiable individuals (5.0%). The rate of portrayal was highest in the 1950s (10%) and 1960s (11%) and then declined sharply thereafter (p value for trend < 0.00001). Smoking virtually disappeared from portraiture in the 1990s (at 0.6%). The median age of the smokers portrayed was significantly higher in the 1970 to 1999 period when compared to the 1950 to 1969 period. CONCLUSIONS: The decline of smoking in this collection of portraiture is consistent with the decline in smoking in the UK over these decades, but contrasts with trends for increasing smoking portrayal described elsewhere for film and television.  (+info)

Fine forecasts: encouraging the media to include ultraviolet radiation information in summertime weather forecasts. (70/796)

Melanoma and skin cancer are largely attributable to over-exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Reports of UVR levels within media weather forecasts appear to be well received by the public and have good potential to communicate the need for appropriate sun protection to a broad audience. This study describes provision of UVR messages by New Zealand newspapers, radio and TV stations over a 4-year period, and examines the impact of an intervention which aimed to address media concerns about the financial costs of accessing UVR information for broadcast. Newspaper and radio presentation of UVR information increased immediately after these costs were removed; however, among radio stations it dropped in subsequent years. Among those media that were presenting UVR, this information was broadcast throughout the summer period and repeated throughout the day. Furthermore, most reports included concomitant, behavioral sun protection messages. At the final assessment (summer 2001/02), 66% of radio stations, both TV channels and 48% of newspapers reported UVR information in summertime weather reports. Efforts to further increase UVR presentation will need to address media concerns about time constraints on weather forecasts and media perceptions of poor audience demand or understanding of some UVR messages.  (+info)

Children's food consumption during television viewing. (71/796)

BACKGROUND: Television viewing is associated with childhood obesity. Eating during viewing and eating highly advertised foods are 2 of the hypothesized mechanisms through which television is thought to affect children's weight. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to describe the amounts and types of foods that children consume while watching television, compare those types with the types consumed at other times of the day, and examine the associations between children's body mass index (BMI) and the amounts and types of foods consumed during television viewing. DESIGN: Data were collected from 2 samples. The first sample consisted of ethnically diverse third-grade children, and the second consisted predominantly of Latino fifth-grade children. Three nonconsecutive 24-h dietary recalls were collected from each child. For each eating episode reported, children were asked whether they had been watching television. Height and weight were measured by using standard methods and were used to calculate BMI. RESULTS: On weekdays and weekend days, 17-18% and approximately 26% of total daily energy, respectively, were consumed during television viewing in the 2 samples. Although the fat content of the foods consumed during television viewing did not differ significantly from that of the foods consumed with the television off, less soda, fast food, fruit, and vegetables were consumed with the television on. The amount of food consumed during television viewing was not associated with children's BMI, but in the third-grade sample, the fat content of foods consumed during television viewing was associated with BMI. CONCLUSIONS: A significant proportion of children's daily energy intake is consumed during television viewing, and the consumption of high-fat foods on weekends may be associated with BMI in younger children.  (+info)

An active motor model for adaptation by vertebrate hair cells. (72/796)

Bullfrog saccular hair cells adapt to maintained displacements of their stereociliary bundles by shifting their sensitive range, suggesting an adjustment in the tension felt by the transduction channels. It has been suggested that steady-state tension is regulated by the balance of two calcium-sensitive processes: passive "slipping" and active "tensioning." Here we propose a mathematical model for an adaptation motor that regulates tension, and describe some quantitative tests of the model. Slipping and tensioning rates were determined at membrane potentials of -80 and +80 mV. With these, the model predicts that the I(X) curve (relating bundle displacement and channel open probability) should shift negatively by 124 nm when the cell is depolarized, with an exponential time course that is slower on depolarization from -80 to +80 mV than on repolarization. This was observed: on depolarization, the I(X) curve shifted by an average of 139 nm, and displayed the expected difference in rates at the two potentials. Because the negative shift of the I(X) curve on depolarization represents an increase in the tension on transduction channels, the model also predicts this tension should cause an unrestrained bundle to pivot negatively by 99 nm on depolarization. Such movement was observed using high-resolution video microscopy; its amplitude was variable but ranged up to about 100 nm, and its time course was asymmetric in the same way as that of the I(X) curve shift. In additional comparisons, the active bundle movements and I(X) curve shift exhibited a similar steady-state voltage dependence, and were both reversibly abolished by reduced bath Ca2+ or by the transduction channel blocker streptomycin. Lastly, among different cells, the amplitude of the movement increased with the size of the transduction current. Thus, a quantitative mechanical model for adaptation also accounts for the observed mechanical behavior of the bundle, suggesting that the same mechanism is responsible for both, and that adaptation is mediated by an active, force-producing mechanism.  (+info)
