Potential exposure to Australian bat lyssavirus, Queensland, 1996-1999. (9/573)

Two human deaths caused by Australian bat lyssavirus (ABL) infection have been reported since 1996. Information was obtained from 205 persons (mostly adults from south Brisbane and the South Coast of Queensland), who reported potential ABL exposure to the Brisbane Southside Public Health Unit from November 1,1996, to January 31, 1999. Volunteer animal handlers accounted for 39% of potential exposures, their family members for 12%, professional animal handlers for 14%, community members who intentionally handled bats for 31%, and community members with contacts initiated by bats for 4%. The prevalence of Lyssavirus detected by fluorescent antibody test in 366 sick, injured, or orphaned bats from the area was 6%. Sequelae of exposure, including the requirement for expensive postexposure prophylaxis, may be reduced by educating bat handlers and the public of the risks involved in handling Australian bats.  (+info)

Description of a presumptive hepatopancreatic reovirus, and a putative gill parvovirus, in the freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus. (10/573)

The redclaw freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus has a reputation for being hardy and resistant to handling stress. However, in recent years, possibly since 1996, C. quadricarinatus farmers in northern Queensland have noted a decrease in stress resistance in their stock. A presumptive reovirus in the hepatopancreas, and a putative parvovirus in the gills, were associated with chronic mortalities in C. quadricarinatus at one northern Queensland farm. Hypertrophic nuclei with marginated chromatin were observed in gill epithelium in moribund crayfish which had recently been relocated to a laboratory from the holding tank facility on the farm. Affected nuclei appeared to be vacant or contained a faint granular basophilia in H&E stained sections. However, toluidine blue staining revealed a homogeneously granular appearance of the nuclei. Transmission electron microscopy revealed approximately 20 nm diameter virus-like particles within the nucleus. Eosinophilic, Feulgen-negative, cytoplasmic inclusions were observed in distal hepatopancreatocytes in 1 moribund C. quadricarinatus collected from the same on-farm holding tank approximately 6 mo later. This crayfish did not display the gill lesions. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the inclusions contained icosahedral virus particles 35 to 40 nm in diameter. The histopathology and preliminary virus morphology of the presumptive hepatopancreatic reovirus, and the histopathology, ultrastructural pathology and preliminary virus morphology of the putative gill parvovirus, are reported herein.  (+info)

Infectivity, transmission and 16S rRNA sequencing of a rickettsia, Coxiella cheraxi sp. nov., from the freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus. (11/573)

A rickettsia-like organism isolated from infected, farm-reared Cherax quadricarinatus was cultured in the yolk sac of developing chicken eggs, but could not be cultured in 3 continuous cell lines, bluegill fry (BF-2), fathead minnow (FHM), and Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf-9). The organism was confirmed by fulfilling Koch's postulates as the aetiological agent of mortalities amongst C. quadricarinatus. When C. quadricarinatus was inoculated with the organism, mortality was 100% at 28 degrees C and 80% at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees C. Horizontal transmission with food and via the waterborne route was demonstrated, but mortalities were lower at 30 and 10% respectively over a 4 wk period. The 16S rRNA sequence of 1325 base pairs of the Gram-negative, obligate intracellular organism was 95.6% homologous to Coxiella burnetii. Of 18 species compared to this rickettsia, the next most closely related bacterium was Legionella pneumophila at 86.7%. The suggested classification of this organism is Order Rickettsiales, family Rickettsiaceae, tribe Rickettsieae, within the genus Coxiella. We suggest it should be named Coxiella cheraxi sp. nov.  (+info)

Occurrence and distribution of Legionella species in composted plant materials. (12/573)

Legionellae were found in many samples of composted plant matter obtained from home gardeners and from facilities which undertook bulk composting. The predominant species isolated from these composts was Legionella pneumophila, the strains of which belonged to serogroups other than serogroup 1. Other Legionella species were present in many samples. Legionella longbeachae serogroup 1, which is implicated in human infections in South Australia, was present in samples obtained from two of six facilities composting large volumes of material and from 3 of 30 gardeners. Many of the species or strains isolated from composts have not been implicated as causative agents of legionellosis in South Austrailia, but some cause infection in healthy and immunosuppressed persons.  (+info)

Community acquisition of gentamicin-sensitive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in southeast Queensland, Australia. (13/573)

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) susceptible to gentamicin has been reported in a number of countries in the 1990s. To study the acquisition of gentamicin-sensitive MRSA (GS-MRSA) in southeast Queensland and the relatedness of GS-MRSA to other strains of MRSA, 35 cases of infection due to GS-MRSA from October 1997 through September 1998 were examined retrospectively to determine the mode of acquisition and risk factors for MRSA acquisition. Thirty-one isolates from the cases were examined using a variety of methods (antibiotyping, phage typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis [PFGE] fingerprinting, and coagulase typing by restriction analysis of PCR products) and were compared with strains of local hospital-acquired gentamicin-resistant MRSA (GR-MRSA) and of Western Australian MRSA (WA-MRSA). Only 6 of 23 cases of community-acquired GS-MRSA had risk factors for MRSA acquisition. Twenty of 21 isolates from cases of community-acquired infection were found to be related by PFGE and coagulase typing and had similar phage typing patterns. Hospital- and nursing home-acquired GS-MRSA strains were genetically and phenotypically diverse. Community-acquired GS-MRSA strains were not related to nosocomial GR-MRSA or WA-MRSA, but phage typing results suggest that they are related to GS-MRSA previously reported in New Zealand.  (+info)

Confirmation of the role of the Mayo Risk Score as a predictor of resource utilization after orthotopic liver transplantation for primary biliary cirrhosis. (14/573)

Resource utilization is an important consideration when patients are selected for orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The Mayo Risk Score has been proposed to help predict optimum time for OLT. We assessed the relation between Mayo risk score, Child-Pugh score, and resource utilization and outcome after OLT for primary biliary cirrhosis. The mean Mayo risk score was greater in patients who died than in the survivors (8.6 +/- 1.4 v 7.1 +/- 1.8; P <.05). There was a positive correlation between Mayo risk score and the 4 resource variables studied (intraoperative blood requirements, time ventilated, and duration of intensive care unit and hospital stays). Patients with a Mayo risk score greater than 7.8 used almost twice the resources of patients with a risk score less than 7.8. A positive correlation also existed between Child-Pugh score and duration of hospital stay. The mean Child-Pugh score in patients who died was greater than that in survivors (10.7 +/- 2.0 v 8.5 +/- 2.8, P =.03). This study confirms that Mayo Risk score is an important predictor of resource utilization and outcome after OLT.  (+info)

Differences in the susceptibility of some penaeid prawn species to gill-associated virus (GAV) infection. (15/573)

Four species of penaeid prawn cultured in Australia (Penaeus monodon, Penaeus esculentus, Marsupenaeus japonicus and Fenneropenaeus merguiensis) were injected with a virulent preparation of gill-associated virus (GAV). P. monodon (average weight = 8.9, 13.9 and 19.2 g), P. esculentus (average weight = 19.5 g), F. merguiensis (average weight = 10.5 g), and small (average weight = 5.8 g) M. japonicus displayed overt signs of disease and mortalities which reached 82 to 100% within 23 d post-injection. Cumulative mortalities in P. esculentus and F. merguiensis were significantly lower than for P. monodon of the same size class. Medium (average weight = 13.0 g) M. japonicus also developed overt signs of disease but cumulative mortalities were not significantly higher than uninfected controls. Large (average weight = 20.3 g) M. japoncius did not display symptoms of disease and there were no significant mortalities up to 23 d post-injection.  (+info)

Melanocortin-1 receptor genotype is a risk factor for basal and squamous cell carcinoma. (16/573)

MC1R gene variants have previously been associated with red hair and fair skin color, moreover skin ultraviolet sensitivity and a strong association with melanoma has been demonstrated for three variant alleles that are active in influencing pigmentation: Arg151Cys, Arg160Trp, and Asp294His. This study has confirmed these pigmentary associations with MC1R genotype in a collection of 220 individuals drawn from the Nambour community in Queensland, Australia, 111 of whom were at high risk and 109 at low risk of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Comparative allele frequencies for nine MC1R variants that have been reported in the Caucasian population were determined for these two groups, and an association between prevalence of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, solar keratosis and the same three active MC1R variant alleles was demonstrated [odds ratio = 3.15 95% CI (1.7, 5.82)]. Three other commonly occurring variant alleles: Val60Leu, Val92Met, and Arg163Gln were identified as having a minimal impact on pigmentation phenotype as well as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma risk. A significant heterozygote effect was demonstrated where individuals carrying a single MC1R variant allele were more likely to have fair and sun sensitive skin as well as carriage of a solar lesion when compared with those individuals with a consensus MC1R genotype. After adjusting for the effects of pigmentation on the association between MC1R variant alleles and basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma risk, the association persisted, confirming that presence of at least one variant allele remains informative in terms of predicting risk for developing a solar-induced skin lesion beyond that information wained through observation of pigmentation phenotype.  (+info)
