BACKGROUND: Estimates of energy intake are required for an understanding of growth and disease; however, few methods of energy intake in children have been validated. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to validate energy intake estimated by the Youth-Adolescent Food-Frequency Questionnaire (YAQ) against the criterion total energy expenditure (TEE) by doubly labeled water (DLW). DESIGN: Twenty-three boys and 27 girls (8.6-16.2 y of age) completed the YAQ and TEE measurements in 1 y. RESULTS: Energy intake by the YAQ (10. 03 +/- 3.12 MJ) and energy expenditure by DLW (9.84 +/- 1.79 MJ) were similar (P: = 0.91) with large lower (-6.30 MJ) and upper (6.67 MJ) +/-2 SD limits of agreement. When within-subject CVs of repeated measures of the DLW and YAQ methods were used, 25 of the 50 subjects were deemed to have misreported their energy intake. The discrepancy in energy intake (YAQ - TEE) was related to body weight (r = -0.25, P: = 0.077) and percentage body fat (r = -0.24, P: = 0.09) but not to age (r = -0.07, P: = 0.63) or the time between measures. From logistic regression, fatter boys were more likely to underreport energy intake than were fatter girls. CONCLUSION: The YAQ provides an accurate estimation of mean energy intake for a group but not for an individual.  (+info)

Nutrient-dense foods and exercise in frail elderly: effects on B vitamins, homocysteine, methylmalonic acid, and neuropsychological functioning. (26/1069)

BACKGROUND: Frail elders are at risk of suboptimal micronutrient status, functional decline, and neurologic disorders. The influence of oral multimicronutrients in physiologic doses and of moderately intense physical exercise on homocysteine (Hcy), methylmalonic acid (MMA), and neurologic functioning have not yet been investigated. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine the effects of enriched foods and exercise on blood vitamins, Hcy, MMA, and neuropsychological functioning in the frail. DESIGN: A 17-wk randomized controlled intervention trial was used to study 1) enriched foods plus a social program, 2) regular foods plus exercise, 3) enriched foods plus exercise, and 4) regular foods plus a social program. Enriched foods contained multiple micronutrients (25-100% of the Dutch recommended dietary allowances); exercises focused on strength, coordination, flexibility, and endurance. Vitamin (cobalamin, red blood cell folate, and pyridoxal 5'-phosphate), Hcy, and MMA concentrations were measured and 2 neuropsychological tests were conducted. RESULTS: Vitamin concentrations were higher in the supplemented groups than in the unsupplemented groups (P < 0.001; total n = 130). Compared with baseline, cobalamin in the supplemented groups was increased by 22%, plasma folate by 101%, red blood cell folate by 87%, and pyridoxal 5'-phosphate by 68%. Concentrations in the unsupplemented groups changed by -2%, -6%, 1%, and -13%, respectively. Hcy decreased by 25% and MMA by 30% in the supplemented groups, compared with a small increase in Hcy (2%) and decrease in MMA (9%) in the unsupplemented groups. Exercise did not significantly affect vitamin, Hcy, or MMA concentrations. No significant effect of either intervention was observed on the neuropsychological tests. CONCLUSIONS: The decrease in Hcy and MMA in frail elders confirms a subclinical metabolic deficiency state. Enriched foods containing physiologic amounts of micronutrients have a beneficial effect on these metabolites. No effects of B vitamins on mental health were identified.  (+info)

Consideration of possible legislation within existing regulatory frameworks. (27/1069)

Legislation on a particular food or on a particular claim to be used in connection with a food require a definition of the food and unequivocal requirements for the use of the claim. The definitions of prebiotics and probiotics presently place these terms between the categories for conventional foods and foods for special dietary uses. Because probiotics and prebiotics, as a group, do not fulfill the criteria for special dietary uses, they have to comply with the rules and laws for conventional foods even if the requirements for the use of the terms prebiotic and probiotic include effects on body functions. These effects on the health and wellness of the consumer and to stimulatory activity, eg, body defense mechanisms, can be used in claims that should underline the importance of the total dietary pattern. It is suggested that setting up rules for the use of the terms prebiotic and probiotic is preferable to creating new food standards.  (+info)

Preference by sheep and goats among hay of eight tall fescue cultivars. (28/1069)

Grazing ruminants use both visual cues and taste in selecting their diet. Preference during grazing may not be the same when forage is dried for hay and cut into lengths prior to feeding in confinement. Eight cultivars of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.), previously evaluated for preference while grazed, were harvested three times over a period of 2 yr. The hays were air-dried, baled, and passed through a hydraulic bale processor prior to feeding. Five experiments were conducted. All three harvests were evaluated with sheep and the last two also with goats, using six animals each time. During an adaptation phase, hays were offered alone as meals. In the experimental phase, every possible pair of hays (28 pairs) was presented for a meal. Data were analyzed by multidimensional scaling and by traditional analyses. Preference was significant among cultivars in all experiments. Multidimensional scaling showed that selection was based on two criteria with two dimensions being significant. Sheep preferred KENHY followed by KENTUCKY 31 and STARGRAZER but preferenced against BARCEL. HIMAG, MO-96, and C1 were intermediate and MOZARK was variable. Goats were similar to sheep in preferring KENHY followed by STARGRAZER and selected against MOZARK and BARCEL. KENTUCKY 31, HIMAG, MO-96, and C1 were intermediate. In all five experiments, the general association was positive for available carbohydrate fractions and negative for fiber fractions that contribute to cell wall rigidity.  (+info)

Performance of light vs heavy steers grazing Plains Old World bluestem at three stocking rates. (29/1069)

Live weight gains of light and heavy calves grazing Plains Old World bluestem at three stocking rates were evaluated during the summers of 1997 and 1998. Initial weights of mixed-breed light-weight steers (LHT) were 141 SD = 17 kg (n = 214) in 1997 and 160 SD = 23 kg (n = 193) in 1998. Initial weights of mixed-breed heavy steers (HWT) were 265 SD = 17 kg (n = 115) in 1997 and 248 SD = 13 kg (n = 126) in 1998. Initial stocking rates for both sizes of steers were as follows: light, 392 kg of live weight/ha; moderate, 504 kg of live weight/ha (increased to 616 kg live weight/ha in 1998); and heavy, 840 kg of live weight/ ha. Averaged gain and gain/hectare are reported as stocking rate by steer type within year. Heavy steers had greater ADG than LHT steers during both years. Forage intake, expressed as a percentage of BW, was greater (P = 0.05) for LHT (3.1%) than for HWT (2.8%) calves. Grazing time (min/d; 1998 only) was greater (P = 0.05) for LHT (665) than for HWT (624) steers. Forage CP and in vivo digestible organic matter (DOM) were slightly greater (P < 0.05) in pastures grazed by HWT vs LHT cattle. Gain/hectare was greater (P < 0.05) for LHT than for HWT calves at all three stocking rates during both years. A linear decline in ADG was observed (P < 0.07) as stocking rates increased for HWT steers in 1997 and LHT steers in 1998. However, ADG did not decline with increasing stocking rate for LHT calves during 1997 or HWT calves during 1998. Forage intake was not different among stocking rates in either 1997 or 1998. Grazing time was greatest (P < 0.05) for steers in the moderate and heavy stocking rates. Forage in vivo DOM decreased (P < 0.05) as stocking rate increased. Both LHT and HWT steers had lower (P < 0.05) ADG at all three stocking rates during 1998 compared with 1997. Despite lower ADG, LHT steers had greater gain/hectare than HWT steers during both 1997 and 1998.  (+info)

Dietary intakes and socioeconomic factors are associated with the hemoglobin concentration of Bangladeshi women. (30/1069)

Iron deficiency anemia affects a large number of women in developing countries, especially during child-bearing years. The hemoglobin concentration is useful for identifying iron deficiency anemia. The main objectives of this study were, first, to extend algorithms for calculating bioavailable iron from mixed diets, taking into account the enhancers and inhibitors of iron absorption under alternative assumptions on body iron stores. Second, a comprehensive longitudinal model was developed for the proximate determinants of hemoglobin concentration that included the subjects' dietary intakes, nutritional status, morbidity and socioeconomic factors and the unobserved between-subject differences. The model for hemoglobin concentration was estimated using three repeated observations on 514 free living women in Bangladesh. Socioeconomic factors affecting the iron intake from meat, fish and poultry and from all animal sources were also modeled. The main results were that bioavailable iron, women's height and mid upper arm circumference and intake of iron tablets were significant predictors of hemoglobin concentration. Increases in household incomes were associated with higher intake of iron from meat, fish and poultry and from all animal sources. The algorithms for estimating bioavailable iron showed the importance of assumptions regarding body iron stores and underscored the need to develop suitable algorithms for subjects in developing countries.  (+info)

Seasonal variation of nutrients and energy in tambaqui's (Colossoma Macropomum Cuvier, 1818) natural food. (31/1069)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of fruits and seeds as food items in the natural diet of the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). During one year, tambaqui's stomach contents were collected, and their nutritional and energetic values were determined. During the flooding period, and while the river water was rising, which coincided with a high availability of fruits and seeds, the protein content of food was low (11%-15% of dry matter basis), whereas in the dry season, when tambaqui fed mainly zooplankton, there was a high protein content (45%-57% of dry matter basis). Lipid, carbohydrate, crude fiber, ash and gross energy contents of the diet varied depending on the river water level and the food items ingested.  (+info)

Folate intake of the Dutch population according to newly established liquid chromatography data for foods. (32/1069)

BACKGROUND: Determining folate intake is difficult because existing folate data in food-composition tables are scarce and unreliable. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were first to analyze 125 of the most important foods that contribute to folate intake in the Netherlands and second to estimate the folate intake of a representative sample of the population. DESIGN: We analyzed the folate content of foods by using a newly developed HPLC trienzyme method combined with an affinity chromatography cleanup step. These results were then used to estimate the folate intake of persons aged 1-92 y who participated in the second Dutch National Food Consumption Survey (DNFCS) in 1992 (n = 6218). RESULTS: For 35 important folate-containing foods, the mean relative folate contents measured by HPLC were 66%, 80%, and 77% of values for comparable foods included in the British food-composition table; the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food table; and the US Department of Agriculture database, respectively. P values for comparison of relative values with 100% were 0.001, 0.171, and 0.144, respectively. The mean dietary folate intake of the DNFCS participants was 182 +/- 119 microg/d. Intake of supplement users (n = 86) was 344 microg/d, with 147 microg/d from supplements. On the basis of these findings, 42% of men and 54% of women do not meet current Dutch recommendations of 60 microg/d for children and 200 microg/d for adults. CONCLUSIONS: Total folate quantities in foods, analyzed by HPLC, are approximately 25% lower than amounts listed in recent food-composition tables estimated by use of the microbiological method. On the basis of these new data, approximately 50% of a representative Dutch population sample does not meet the current recommendations for folate intake.  (+info)
