What does it mean to be a donor offspring? The identity experiences of adults conceived by donor insemination and the implications for counselling and therapy. (9/609)

In the absence of research with adult donor offspring, this study begins to bridge that gap by asking individuals about their experiences as donor offspring and considering the implications for psychotherapeutic and counselling practice. Sixteen participants (13 male, three female, age range 26-55 years) recruited through donor insemination support networks in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, were sent semi-structured questionnaires by E-mail and post. Using identity process theory as a framework for understanding participants' accounts, the data were qualitatively analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Participants consistently reported mistrust within the family, negative distinctiveness, lack of genetic continuity, frustration in being thwarted in the search for their biological fathers and a need to talk to a significant other (i.e. someone who would understand). These experiences could be postulated as being indicative of a struggle to assimilate, accommodate and evaluate information about their new identities as donor offspring. Psychotherapists and counsellors need to be aware of these identity issues if they are to meet the needs of donor offspring within therapeutic practice.  (+info)

Embracing complexity: organicism for the 21st century. (10/609)

Organicism (materialistic holism) has provided the philosophical underpinnings for embryology since the time of Kant. It had influenced the founders of developmental mechanics, and the importance of organicism to embryology was explicitly recognized by such figures as O. Hertwig, H. Spemann, R. Harrison, A. M. Dalq, J. Needham, and C. H. Waddington. Many of the principles of organicism remain in contemporary developmental biology, but they are rarely defined as such. A combination of genetic reductionism and the adoption of holism by unscientific communities has led to the devaluation of organicism as a fruitful heuristic for research. This essay attempts to define organicism, provide a brief history of its importance to experimental embryology, outline some sociologically based reasons for its decline, and document its value in contemporary developmental biology. Based on principles or organicism, developmental biology should become a science of emerging complexity. However, this does mean that some of us will have to learn calculus.  (+info)

Protection of privacy by third-party encryption in genetic research in Iceland. (11/609)

As the new human genetics continues its dramatic expansion into many laboratories and medical institutions, the concern for the protection of the personal privacy of individuals who participate increases. It seems that even the smallest of laboratories must confront the issue of how to protect the genetic and phenotypic information of participants in their research. Some have promoted the use of anonymity as a way out of this dilemma. But we are reminded by others that the future cannot be predicted, and that future benefits may be lost when the links to these benevolent volunteers are gone forever. More recently, some ethical bodies have suggested, without specific recommendations, that a reversible third-party encryption system may be a solution to this problem. However, they have not provided a route or even examples of how to proceed. We present here the Icelandic approach to this issue by developing a third-party encryption system in direct collaboration with the Data Protection Commission (DPC) of Iceland. We have incorporated the encryption system within our sample collection and storage software, which minimises inconvenience but enhances security. The strategy assures a barrier between the laboratory and the outside world that can only be crossed by the DPC.  (+info)

The case for a new system for oversight of research on human subjects. (12/609)

The increasing emphasis on evidence-based clinical practice has thrown into sharp focus multiple deficiencies in current systems of ethical review. This paper argues that a complete overhaul of systems for ethical oversight of studies involving human subjects is now required as developments in medical, epidemiological and genetic research have outstripped existing structures for ethical supervision. It shows that many problems are now evident and concludes that sequential and piecemeal amendments to present arrangements are inadequate to address these. At their core present systems of ethical review still rely on the integrity and judgment of individual investigators. One possible alternative is to train and license research investigators, make explicit their responsibilities and have ethics committees devote much more of their time to monitoring research activity in order to detect those infringing the rules.  (+info)

Creating a new paradigm in nutrition research within the National Cancer Institute. (13/609)

Almost two decades after Doll and Peto (1981) provided evidence that one third of cancer deaths are related to diet, it remains unclear which dietary components may be key in cancer prevention. Although the complexity of the diet can become overwhelming, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has remained steadfast in its commitment to defining the roles that diet and nutrition have in the development of cancer and has provided increased research and training support to assist in unraveling this interrelationship. Evidence for this sustained commitment is highlighted by a fourfold increase in NCI expenditures for nutrition research and training from 1983 to 1998; this substantial increase reflects a trend that is occurring in some universities and the private sector. More than one third of the nutrition-related NCI research is funded by the Division of Cancer Prevention. Supported investigations cover the gamut from basic mechanisms of action of dietary constituents, methodology development, human metabolic studies, clinical trials of dietary modification and the chemopreventive potential of individual nutrients to population-based studies.  (+info)

Counter-matching in studies of gene-environment interaction: efficiency and feasibility. (14/609)

The interest in studying gene-environment interaction is increasing for complex diseases. However, most methods of detecting gene-environment interactions may not be appropriate for the study of interactions involving rare genes (G:) or uncommon environmental exposures (E:), because of poor statistical power. To increase this power, the authors propose the counter-matching design. This design increases the number of subjects with the rare factor without increasing the number of measurements that must be performed. In this paper, the efficiency and feasibility (required sample sizes) of counter-matching designs are evaluated and discussed. Counter-matching on both G: and E: appears to be the most efficient design for detecting gene-environment interaction. The sensitivity and specificity of the surrogate measures, the frequencies of G: and E:, and, to a lesser extent, the value of the interaction effect are the most important parameters for determining efficiency. Feasibility is also more dependent on the exposure frequencies and the interaction effect than on the main effects of G: and E: Although the efficiency of counter-matching is greatest when the risk factors are very rare, the study of such rare factors is not realistic unless one is interested in very strong interaction effects. Nevertheless, counter-matching appears to be more appropriate than most traditional epidemiologic methods for the study of interactions involving rare factors.  (+info)

The place of farm animal species in the new genomics world of reproductive biology. (15/609)

Reproductive studies on farm animals have been part of the underpinnings that have led to the ready availability of low cost, safe, and nutritious food in the developed world. They have also made a significant contribution to reproductive medicine. Yet at a time when world demand for food is increasing and the National Institutes of Health budget is set to double between 1998 and 2003, funding for animal agriculture remains low, erratic, and politically vulnerable. There are also those who question whether the food animals have value any longer as comparative models for studying reproduction as it related to human health and well being. In this paper I describe how such research is presently funded at the federal level and discuss why support for agricultural science is in decline, despite many unmet needs. I then suggest that the human genome project and the developing areas of comparative gene mapping and functional genomics are beginning to provide new impetus to studies on farm animal species. Finally I argue that although rodents and, above all, the mouse, with all its genetic advantages, occupy lofty positions as models for studying reproductive processes and their abnormalities in the human, there will continue to be a need to take a broader comparative approach that will inevitably involve farm animals.  (+info)

Gamete donation and anonymity: should offspring from donated gametes continue to be denied knowledge of their origins and antecedents? (16/609)

This paper presents the case for a change from the current practice of anonymity and secrecy in the use of donated gametes in medically assisted conception. It does so by describing history of the practice, various committees of enquiry over the years, their recommendations for consideration of the children created and the need for follow-up of the outcome; presenting the evidence from outcome studies both about child development and family relationships where secrecy is maintained about the child's origin and those where the practice is openly to acknowledge their origins. This is followed by an analysis of the experience and views of these children once they are adults. In discussion of the composite findings recurring themes emerge. From this it is concluded that offspring from donated gametes should not continue to be denied knowledge of their origins and antecedents. In the public debate, four schools of thought are identified. Possible practical scenarios to implement change are discussed. This paper argues that the fundamental issue regarding any of these remains-that priority in decision-making should be the lifelong well-being of the children being created.  (+info)
