Root canal shaping using rotary nickel-titanium files in preclinical dental education in Turkey. (57/81)

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the ability of a group of third-year dental students without any endodontic clinical experience to use the ProTaper Instruments (Dentsply Maillefer) to decrease the amount of straightening of curved canals on human molar teeth and to determine the incidence of instrument fractures and instrumentation time. Thirty-one undergraduate dental students in Turkey received a training session. The students prepared a total of 144 root canals in human mandibular or maxillary molar teeth with ProTaper. Fifty-six teeth were excluded due to unreadable image, misinformation, or straight or severe curve. Using pre- and post-preparation digital radiographs, the straightening of curved root canals was investigated. Loss of working length and incidence of fracture were also noted. A total of eighty-eight curved root canals were selected. Mesiobuccal or mesiolingual roots with curvatures of between 20 degrees and 43 degrees as assessed by Schneider's method and working length of between 15 mm and 22.5 mm were included in the study. The means of the curved root canals before and after the instrumentation were 29.5 degrees +/- 6 degrees and 27 degrees +/- 6.3 degrees , respectively. The means of the working length before and after the instrumentation were 19 mm +/- 2.1 mm and 18.3 mm +/- 1.9 mm, respectively. A statistically significant difference between straightening of curved root canals and loss of working length was found between before and after instrumentation (p<0.000). The mean straightening of curved root canals and loss of working length after preparation with the size F1 ProTaper file were 2.5 mm +/- 3.6 mm and 0.7 mm +/- 0.6 mm, respectively. Only two F1 ProTaper instruments fractured at the apical level. The study concluded that rotary instruments performed adequately with inexperienced operators who received a brief structured training session.  (+info)

Does a case completion curriculum influence dental students' clinical productivity? (60/81)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a new clinical curriculum on dental student productivity as measured by number of procedures performed in the student teaching practice. Harvard School of Dental Medicine adopted a new clinical education model for the predoctoral program in summer 2009 based upon a Case Completion Curriculum (CCC) rather than a discipline-based numeric threshold system. The two study groups (threshold group and case completion group) consisted of students who graduated in 2009 and 2010. Clinical performance was assessed by clinical productivity across five major discipline areas: periodontics, operative dentistry, removable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics, and endodontics. The relationships between the two study groups with regard to number of procedures performed by category revealed that the case completion group performed a significantly higher number of operative and removable prosthodontic procedures, but fewer periodontal and endodontic procedures (p+info)

The status of mineral trioxide aggregate in endodontics education in dental schools in Turkey. (61/81)

The aim of this study was to assess the current status of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) as an educational material in dental schools in Turkey. A survey was sent to senior members of the endodontic departments of seventeen dental schools; fourteen responded. All respondents reported that they used MTA in their clinical practice, with apexification, perforations, retrograde fillings, and root resorptions being the most frequently occurring treatment procedures. All reported that information was given to students regarding MTA mainly as part of the curriculum. The third and fourth years were the periods when MTA was introduced to students in most of the schools. Twelve schools reported that students had the opportunity to observe procedures in which MTA was used, but students had the chance to use the material in a very minor proportion of the schools, mainly under the supervision of clinical instructors. Ten schools agreed that MTA should be included in the regular endodontic curriculum. Financial constraints seemed to be the predominant reason for those who answered this question negatively, followed by difficult handling properties and low radiopacity of the material. Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that ways should be sought to prevent financial difficulties from depriving dental students of the opportunity to receive information about contemporary methodologies such as MTA utilization.  (+info)

New multipurpose endodontic device developed in Germany for use in predoctoral and continuing dental education and science. (62/81)

The purpose of this article is to describe a simple and versatile aid for the endodontic treatment of extracted teeth and its possible applications. The Med*-box is a new endodontic multipurpose device made of transparent acrylic that permits all elements of root canal treatment to be performed and evaluated either visually or radiologically. The Med*-box represents a valuable addition to the spectrum of educational and practical means in endodontic training. It is well suited for students, dentists, and endodontists for learning the handling of new materials, methods, and instruments in endodontics before they work clinically upon a patient. Also in the context of scientific endodontic issues, the Med*-box represents a simple, economical, and easily manageable aid.  (+info)

Loss of sight caused by calcium hydroxide paste accidentally splashed into the eye during endodontic treatment: case report. (63/81)

Calcium hydroxide, widely used in endodontic treatment, is a strong base that may cause irreversible injury to vital tissue that comes into contact with this substance. We present the first case of a dentist who accidentally splashed endodontic calcium hydroxide into her own eye. After washing with copious amounts of water for several minutes, she was treated in the hospital within 30 minutes of the accident. Because of the burning caused by the base solution, the dentist lost vision in the affected eye. She returned to the hospital several times for treatment of a corneal abscess and corneal fungal infection. She had the keloid that formed between the eyeball and eyelid removed 3 times. Calcium hydroxide can cause blindness when it comes into contact with the eye. Clinicians should take adequate precautions to prevent this serious complication. In case of an accident, it is important to wash the eye efficiently.  (+info)

Anatomical variation of mandibular second molar and its implications in endodontic treatment. (64/81)

The variations of anatomical and morphological characteristics of the teeth are very important for any practitioner. These differences in root morphology are influencing the success of the endodontic therapy and the long-term prognosis of the tooth, especially when it is an abutment for a prosthetic restoration. Before beginning an endodontic treatment, the clinician must take into account the morphological variations of the root anatomy. This article describes the therapeutic approach in a case of mandibular second molar with four canals abnormally located instead of three. This anatomical variation is a major risk for both endodontic and prosthetic treatment failure. The lack of knowledge of root and pulp anatomy permits the errors in diagnosing and treatment planning. Unfilled canals, left like this by omission, can compromise both the endodontic and prosthetic treatment. For the success of the any dental treatment is critical to know the normal configuration of the pulp and to be aware of the possible variations.  (+info)
