Status of PharmD/PhD programs in colleges of pharmacy: the University of Tennessee dual PharmD/PhD program. (9/99)

OBJECTIVES: To describe the University of Tennessee PharmD/PhD program and assess the prevalence and characteristics of PharmD/PhD programs in the United States. METHODS: Survey instruments were mailed in May 2004 to UT dual-degree program participants and deans of US colleges and schools of pharmacy. RESULTS: University of Tennessee PharmD/PhD students completed more than 30 hours of graduate credit before obtaining their PharmD and 72.2% agreed or strongly agreed that the program met their professional goals. More than 40% of US pharmacy colleges and schools have or plan to have PharmD/PhD programs. A wide variation exists in the level of integration, PhD concentrations offered, entrance requirements, and student benefits. Most schools with PharmD/PhD programs had few students enrolled in the program, but attrition rates were low (<20%) for 69% of the schools. CONCLUSIONS: Dual-degree programs attract and retain pharmacy students in research programs and 47.6% of graduates entered academia and industry.  (+info)

Predictors of academic success in a doctor of pharmacy program. (10/99)

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the correlation between specific prepharmacy college variables and academic success in the Texas Tech doctor of pharmacy degree program. METHODS: Undergraduate and pharmacy school transcripts for 424 students admitted to the Texas Tech doctor of pharmacy degree program between May 1996 and May 2001 were reviewed in August of 2005. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS Release 11.5. The undergraduate college variables included prepharmacy grade point-average (GPA), organic chemistry school type (2- or 4-year institution), chemistry, biology, and math courses beyond required prerequisites, and attainment of a bachelor of science (BS), bachelor of arts (BA), or master of science (MS) degree. Measurements of academic success in pharmacy school included cumulative first-professional year (P1) GPA, cumulative GPA (grade point average of all coursework finished to date), and graduation without academic delay or suspension. RESULTS: Completing advanced biology courses and obtaining a BS degree prior to pharmacy school were each significantly correlated with a higher mean P1 GPA. Furthermore, the mean cumulative GPA of students with a BS degree was 86.4 versus cumulative GPAs of those without a BS degree which were 84.9, respectively (p = 0.039). Matriculates with advanced prerequisite biology coursework or a BS degree prior to pharmacy school were significantly more likely to graduate from the doctor of pharmacy program without academic delay or suspension (p = 0.021 and p = 0.027, respectively). Furthermore, advanced biology coursework was significantly and independently associated with graduating on time (p = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: Advanced biology coursework and a science baccalaureate degree were significantly associated with academic success in pharmacy school. On multivariate analysis, only advanced biology coursework remained a significant predictor of success.  (+info)

Critical appraisal rounds: a new training model for clinical pharmacologists. (11/99)

A new training model for critical appraisal in therapeutics is presented. Postgraduate trainees in Clinical Pharmacology are assigned to critically appraise scientific papers that faculty members were asked to review by Journals. The manuscripts were discussed in group rounds, allowing teaching of all aspects of therapeutics research. Formal evaluation of this model by trainees revealed high marks for "critical thinking", "learning study design", and "how to write/not to write".  (+info)

Preadmission predictors of PharmD graduates' performance on the NAPLEX. (12/99)

OBJECTIVES: To identify prepharmacy variables that predicted graduate performance on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) test. METHODS: Undergraduate and pharmacy school transcripts for 424 students admitted to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Doctor of Pharmacy program from the fall of 1996 to the fall of 2001 were reviewed. NAPLEX scores were provided by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP). Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS, 11.5. RESULTS: Grade point average, composite Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) score, and California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) score were each positively correlated with NAPLEX score (p < 0.001 for each). Type of school where organic chemistry was completed; age; advanced courses taken in chemistry, biology, and math; and attainment of a BS, BA, or MS degree were not significantly correlated with NAPLEX score (p > 0.05). When comparing students who successfully graduated and passed the NAPLEX with students who were academically suspended or who failed the NAPLEX, there were significant differences in mean PCAT scores, CCTST score, and age (p < 0.05 for all). Stepwise regression analysis applying all admission variables except PCAT subscores revealed a correlation between predictors (composite PCAT, prepharmacy GPA, and age) and NAPLEX score (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Composite PCAT score was the strongest predictor of success and failure on the NAPLEX. However, the combined predictive ability of PCAT and CCTST scores, prepharmacy GPA, and age was relatively low. Thus, a full review of each candidate's application is justified.  (+info)

Students perceptions of the incorporation of games into classroom instruction for basic and clinical pharmacokinetics. (13/99)

OBJECTIVE: To develop classroom games as alternatives to traditional pharmacokinetic instruction. DESIGN: three classroom games were created for the following purposes: simple semester review, application of pharmacokinetics in a community-pharmacy setting, and development of critical thinking skills and concept application. All the games incorporated some degree of group activity. ASSESSMENT: A survey was conducted of students' attitudes towards the incorporation of games into the classroom. A comparison of final examination scores to scores from the previous year was used to determine whether incorporating games hindered learning. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, students found the games enjoyable, but some students questioned how much they learned. Although the games appeared to have a positive impact on grades and incorporated more than just factual, book knowledge (eg, critical thinking skills), determining how these games improved learning will require further assessment.  (+info)

Integrating virtual patients into a self-care course. (14/99)

OBJECTIVE: To develop, implement, and evaluate the use of virtual patients as a teaching tool for third-professional year PharmD students within an advanced elective self-care course. DESIGN: Practicing community pharmacists, faculty members, and pharmacy residents with alias e-mail accounts served as virtual patients and corresponded on a weekly basis via e-mail with pharmacy students regarding an assortment of fictional health concerns. Self-care inquiries were e-mailed to the students who replied and then forwarded their response to the course coordinator for evaluation and class discussion. At the end of the course, students were asked to assess the value of the learning activity. ASSESSMENT: Students demonstrated significant improvement in knowledge, problem-solving, communication, and professional skills upon course completion. Student's assessments of the virtual patient activity have suggested positive feedback on developing self-care skills, patient interactions, and group dynamics. CONCLUSION: This teaching tool was designed to enhance student's knowledge base, assessment, and counseling skills when interacting with patients in various situations. Instructor evaluation of responses, student feedback, and self-evaluation indicated the activity improved overall knowledge and communication skills.  (+info)

A model for supporting and training clinical pharmaceutical scientist PhD students. (15/99)

OBJECTIVES: To enhance the clinical training and financial support of graduate students in a Clinical Pharmaceutical Scientist PhD Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. DESIGN: The School of Pharmacy and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center entered into a collaborative agreement to develop the Clinical Scientist Associate (CSA) program, as well as financially support students enrolled in a Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD program. These clinical training experiences are in addition to the didactic and laboratory experiences in the pharmaceutical sciences graduate program. ASSESSMENT: Since 2002, three students have participated as CSAs, simultaneously working on their graduate research and meeting the requirements of the CSA program. CONCLUSIONS: The CSA program is a novel model for clinical training and support of post-PharmD graduate students enrolled in a PhD clinical pharmaceutical scientist program.  (+info)

Pharmacy students' knowledge of the Medicare drug benefit and intention to provide Medicare medication therapy management services. (16/99)

OBJECTIVES: To examine PharmD students' knowledge about Medicare Part D and their attitudes toward and intention to provide Medicare medication therapy management services (MTMS). METHODS: Fourth-professional year students were given a self-administered survey instrument that assessed: (1) knowledge about Medicare Part D; (2) attitudes, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, and intention to provide Medicare MTMS; and (3) demographic and experience information. RESULTS: Ninety-five students responded for a response rate of 94%. Students showed good basic knowledge about Medicare Part D, with a mean score of 94%. Almost 60% of students agreed that they intended to provide Medicare MTMS, but agreement dropped to 37% when they were asked if they were willing to take initiative to provide MTMS. CONCLUSIONS: The lack of willingness to take initiative to provide Medicare MTMS suggests that colleges and schools of pharmacy must strengthen efforts to encourage students to take on the role of service provider.  (+info)
