Color discrimination in carriers of color deficiency. (73/224)

Carriers of X-linked color vision deficiencies have previously been reported to exhibit mild abnormalities of color matching and discrimination. In a sample of 55 carriers of protan and deutan deficiencies and 55 age-matched normal controls, we measured chromatic discrimination along a red-green axis. We found that discrimination was impaired in the case of carriers of deutan deficiencies (which affect the middle-wave-sensitive cones of the retina), but was normal in the case of carriers of protan deficiencies (which affect the long-wave-sensitive cones). We argue that this result can be explained by the difference in the relative numbers of middle- and long-wave cones in heterozygous retinae: the imbalance of the two cone types is predicted to be much greater in the case of the deutan heterozygote than in the case of the protan heterozygote. In future studies it will be necessary to consider separately the two types of heterozygote.  (+info)

Cone contributions to signals for accommodation and the relationship to refractive error. (74/224)

The accommodation response is sensitive to the chromatic properties of the stimulus, a sensitivity presumed to be related to making use of the longitudinal chromatic aberration of the eye to decode the sign of the defocus. Thus, the relative sensitivity to the long- (L) and middle-wavelength (M) cones may influence accommodation and may also be related to an individual's refractive error. Accommodation was measured continuously while subjects viewed a sine wave grating (2.2c/d) that had different cone contrast ratios. Seven conditions tested loci that form a circle with equal vector length (0.27) at 0, 22.5, 45, 67.5, 90, 120, 145 deg. An eighth condition produced an empty field stimulus (CIE (x,y) co-ordinates (0.4554, 0.3835)). Each of the gratings moved at 0.2 Hz sinusoidally between 1.00 D and 3.00 D for 40s, while the effects of longitudinal chromatic aberration were neutralized with an achromatizing lens. Both the mean level of accommodation and the gain of the accommodative response, to sinusoidal movements of the stimulus, depended on the relative L and M cone sensitivity: Individuals more sensitive to L-cone stimulation showed a higher level of accommodation (p=0.01; F=12.05; ANOVA) and dynamic gain was higher for gratings with relatively more L-cone contrast. Refractive error showed a similar correlation: More myopic individuals showed a higher mean level of accommodation (p<0.01; F=11.42; ANOVA) and showed higher gain for gratings with relatively more L-cone than M-cone contrast (p=0.01; F=10.83 ANOVA). If luminance contrast is maximized by accommodation, long wavelengths will be imaged behind the photoreceptors. Individuals in whom luminance is dominated by L-cones may maximize luminance contrast both by accommodating more, as shown here, and by increased ocular elongation, resulting in myopia, possibly explaining the correlations reported here among relative L/M-cone sensitivity, refractive error and accommodation.  (+info)

Memory recall in arousing situations - an emotional von Restorff effect? (75/224)

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between memory recall and P300 amplitude in list learning tasks, but the variables mediating this P300-recall relationship are not well understood. In the present study, subjects were required to recall items from lists consisting of 12 words, which were presented in front of pictures taken from the IAPS collection. One word per list is made distinct either by font color or by a highly arousing background IAPS picture. This isolation procedure was first used by von Restorff. Brain potentials were recorded during list presentation. RESULTS: Recall performance was enhanced for color but not for emotional isolates. Event-related brain potentials (ERP) showed a more positive P300-component for recalled non-isolated words and color-isolated words, compared to the respective non-remembered words, but not for words isolated by arousing background. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that it is crucial to take emotional mediator variables into account, when using the P300 to predict later recall. Highly arousing environments might force the cognitive system to interrupt rehearsal processes in working memory, which might benefit transfer into other, more stable memory systems. The impact of attention-capturing properties of arousing background stimuli is also discussed.  (+info)

A low-power, LED-based, high-brightness anomaloscope. (76/224)

Color matches made with a Nagel anomaloscope are used in the differentiation of color vision deficiencies. When these color matches are made over a wide range of retinal illuminances, the changes in the color match provide information about the regeneration kinetics and the absorption spectra of the middle- and long-wavelength cone photopigments. These steady-state color matches vary with a variety of conditions, and may have value in screening for eye disease. Recently, high-brightness LEDs have become available that allowed us to construct a LED-based, high-brightness anomaloscope. We used inexpensive, low-energy components to replicate an earlier instrument, getting a maximum retinal illuminance over 5.6 log Trolands.  (+info)

Effects of motion and configural complexity on color transparency perception. (77/224)

We tested whether motion and configural complexity affect perceived transparency. A series of five coherent chromatic transformations in color space was applied across a figure: translation, convergence, shear, divergence and rotation. The stimuli consisted of a bipartite or a checkerboard configuration (10 x 10 degrees), with a central static or moving overlay (5 x 5 degrees). Three different luminance conditions (the plane of chromatic transformation oriented toward higher, lower, or equal luminances) were also tested for each of three modulation depths. For each stimulus, the observer judged whether the overlay appeared transparent or not. The main results indicated an interaction between the type of chromatic transformation and stimulus motion and complexity. For example, convergences are judged to appear transparent significantly more often when motion is added for bipartite configurations, or when they are generated in a checkerboard configuration. Surprisingly, shears that have been reported to appear opaque, are more frequently reported to appear transparent with short vector lengths and when combined with motion. Other transformations are also affected by motion, although the effectiveness of figural complexity on transparency seems to depend on both the type of color shifts and the presence of motion. The results indicate that adding motion and stimulus complexity are not necessarily neutral with respect to the chromatic shifts evoking transparency. Thus, studies that have used motion to enhance transparency may yield different results about the color shifts supporting transparency perception from those that did not. The same might be supposed for stimulus complexity under some conditions.  (+info)

Anomalous trichromats' judgments of surface color in natural scenes under different daylights. (78/224)

Deuteranomalous trichromacy, which affects medium-wavelength-sensitive cones, is more common than protanomalous trichromacy, which affects long-wavelength-sensitive cones. The aim of the present work was to test the extent to which these two kinds of anomalous trichromacy affect surface-color judgments in the natural world. Simulations of 18 natural scenes under different daylight illuminants were presented on a high-resolution color monitor to 7 deuteranomalous, 7 protanomalous, and 12 normal trichromatic observers, who had to discriminate between reflectance and illuminant changes in the images. Observers' ability to judge surface color was quantified by a standard color-constancy index. Deuteranomalous trichromats performed as well as normal trichromats, but protanomalous trichromats performed more poorly than both. The results are considered in relation to the spectral coverage of cones, rod intrusion, and the characterization of anomalous trichromacy by the Rayleigh match.  (+info)

Severity staging by early features of age-related maculopathy exhibits weak relationships with functional deficits on SWS grating acuity. (79/224)

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between short-wavelength-sensitive (SWS) resolution acuity and epidemiologically defined stages of early age-related maculopathy (ARM). METHODS: Subjects consisted of 88 adults aged 51 to 87 years. Psychophysical testing was undertaken in only one eye of each subject (the study eye). All study eyes had a LogMAR acuity of 0.30 (20/40 Snellen) or better. SWS and achromatic grating resolution acuity were measured at 6 degrees eccentricity from the fovea. Stereoscopic color fundus photographs centered on the macula were taken on both eyes of each subject and were graded using the Wisconsin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading System (WARMGS). After grading, features of ARM were combined to assign a severity stage from 0 to 5 using the methods described by the Rotterdam Eye Study. Relationships between visual function, study eye ARM stage, and fellow eye status were examined with the use of standard statistical analysis. RESULTS: Although SWS resolution acuity was significantly reduced in eyes classified as having any ARM compared with eyes classified as having no ARM (P = 0.002), there was no relationship between the severity of functional deficits and the morphologic severity from stage 1 to stage 4. On reassigning subject eyes to a revised severity staging (stage 0, stages 1 to 4 combined, and stage 5), SWS acuity was significantly different among these three groups (P < 0.001). No significant relationship was found between achromatic resolution acuity and ARM staging. The status of the fellow eye (advanced macular degeneration present or absent) was not significantly related to visual function in the study eye. CONCLUSIONS: Significant functional deficits in SWS resolution acuity were found in eyes with ARM features, but the severity of functional loss did not correlate well with the currently accepted method of assigning a morphologic severity stage. Longitudinal studies may reveal further information on the relationships between functional deficits, ARM status, disease progression, and outcome.  (+info)

From lower to higher colour metrics: a historical account. (80/224)

BACKGROUND: 'Lower colour metrics' describes the laws of colour mixture as manifest in trichromatic colour space and best known in its two-dimensional projection, the chromaticity diagram. 'Higher colour metrics' describes how distance in this colour space translates into perceptual difference. It is higher in the sense that it builds on the fundamentals of lower colour metrics. METHODS: A historical account is given of the development of higher colour metrics, with many ups and downs, since Helmholtz started it at the end of the 19th Century. RESULTS: Despite long periods of silence, Helmholtz's basic ideas have survived by successfully extended modelling, which could also account for seemingly paradoxical effects of luminance and saturation on colour discrimination. CONCLUSION: The subject theme, which presently is at a low tide of interest, deserves the renewed interest of colour vision researchers.  (+info)
