Three-dimensional hindlimb kinematics of water running in the plumed basilisk lizard (Basiliscus plumifrons). (49/871)

Much of what is known about tetrapod locomotion is based upon movement over solid surfaces. Yet in the wild, animals are forced to move over substrates with widely varying properties. Basilisk lizards are unique in their ability to run across water from the time they hatch to adulthood. Previous studies have developed mechanical models or presented theoretical analyses of running across water, but no detailed kinematic descriptions of limb motion are currently available. The present study reports the first three-dimensional kinematic descriptions of plumed basilisk lizards (Basiliscus plumifrons) running across water, from hatchling (2.8 g) to adult (78 g) size range. Basilisks ran on a 4.6 m-long water track and were filmed with two synchronized high-speed cameras at 250 frames s(-1) and 1/1250 s shutter speed. All coordinates were transformed into three dimensions using direct linear transformation. Seventy-six kinematic variables and six morphological variables were measured or calculated to describe the motion of the hindlimb, but only 32 variables most relevant to kinematic motion are presented here. Kinematic variation among individuals was primarily related to size differences rather than sprint speed. Although basilisk lizards applied some of the same strategies to increase running velocity across water as other tetrapods do on land, their overall kinematics differ dramatically. The feet exhibit much greater medio-lateral excursions while running through water than do those of other lizards while running on land. Also, whereas the hindlimb kinematics of other lizards on land are typically symmetrical (i.e. limb excursions anterior to the hip are of similar magnitude to the limb excursions aft of the hip), basilisks running through water exhibit much greater excursions aft than they do anterior to the hip. Finally, ankle and knee flexion in early stance is a defining feature of a tetrapod step during terrestrial locomotion; yet this characteristic is missing in aquatic basilisk running. This may indicate that the basilisk limb acts primarily as a force producer - as opposed to a spring element - when locomoting on a highly damping surface such as water.  (+info)

Relationship between parathyroid gland size and responsiveness to maxacalcitol therapy in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. (50/871)

BACKGROUND: Although vitamin D has been reported to be useful in the treatment of patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism, it is not effective in some of them. The goal of this study was to see whether a relationship could be found between maxacalcitol responsiveness and parathyroid gland size. METHODS: Parathyroid gland size was measured by ultrasonography in 25 patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism [serum intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) >300 pg/ml, 58.1 +/- 2.8 years old, 15 males and 10 females], who were treated with maxacalcitol. Patients were divided into two groups according to the mean value of the maximum diameter of the glands: group S with a diameter <11.0 mm and group L with a diameter >or =11.0 mm. Between the two groups there were no significant differences in serum intact PTH, calcium or phosphate level or duration of haemodialysis. RESULTS: Mean (+/- SE) maximal diameter of detectable parathyroid glands was 11.0 +/- 0.7 mm before treatment. At 4-24 weeks after administration of maxacalcitol, intact PTH concentrations decreased significantly in group S (from 546 +/- 39 to 266 +/- 34 pg/ml at 24 weeks; P < 0.01), but did not significantly change in group L (from 481 +/- 39 to 403 +/- 49 pg/ml at 24 weeks). At 24 weeks after maxacalcitol administration, the number of detectable parathyroid glands was significantly decreased in group S (from 2.2 +/- 0.3 to 1.8 +/- 0.4; P < 0.05), but not in group L. Serum calcium increased significantly in group L (from 9.6 +/- 0.2 to 10.2 +/- 0.3 mg/dl; P < 0.05), but not in group S. There was a significant correlation between reduction in PTH and parathyroid gland size (r = -0.42, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that the responsiveness to maxacalcitol therapy of secondary hyperparathyroidism is dependent on parathyroid gland size and that the simple measurement of maximum parathyroid gland diameter by ultrasonography may be useful for predicting responsiveness to maxacalcitol treatment.  (+info)

Body part asymmetry in partial seizure. (51/871)

Clinically differentiating between localisation related and generalised epilepsy is important because it carries significant implications for planning diagnostic management strategy. Asymmetry of body parts such as toes, popliteal crease levels, thumbs, cubital crease levels, and forehead and facial structures, are common in patients with localisation related epilepsy syndromes. We retrospectively studied 337 patients with seizure disorders. Body part asymmetry was routinely documented. Fifty-six were excluded because of non-epileptic seizures, pure psychiatric disorders, non-epileptic neurological disorders, brain tumours and strokes. The relationship between clinically detectable body asymmetry (BA) and the electro-anatomic characteristics of their epilepsy was explored. Body asymmetry was found in 88 out of 282 cases, in which 64 (73.5%) suffered from localisation related epilepsy. Among localisation related epilepsy, BA were found in 41.5% (n=64/154) of patients. In contrast, only 18.75% (n=24/128) of patients with generalised seizure disorders showed similar findings (P<0.0001). Among patients with partial onset seizures, lateralisation of BA was concordant with their seizure origin in 75.9% (n=41/54) and discordant in 24.1% (n=13/54). Investigation results of 10 partial epilepsy cases were non-lateralising at the time of study. Peak age of onset of concordant case was 0-5 years old while discordant group was 6-15 years old. We conclude that BA in patients with seizure disorder is a useful clue to diagnosis of localisation related seizure and may provide clues for lateralising seizure origin in partial onset seizures.  (+info)

Epizootiology and histopathology of Parvicapsula sp. in coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch. (52/871)

The epizootiology and histopathology of the myxosporean Parvicapsula sp. was studied during monthly health surveys of 4 groups of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch at a commercial farm in Puget Sound, Washington, USA, from 1984 to 1986. No Parvicapsula sp. was detected in histological samples taken from juvenile fish in fresh water, but the parasite was detected in fish from all groups 2 to 8 mo after transfer to seawater net pens. Groups placed in seawater net pens in November and December had a higher prevalence of infection, and a longer period of continuous detected infection, than those introduced into net pens in May. For the groups transferred to seawater in November and December, the highest infection prevalence (45 to 90%) was detected during the following March and April. Among 13 tissues examined histologically, only the pseudobranch and kidney were positive for Parvicapsula sp., with 26 (62%) of 42 positive fish showing infections only in the pseudobranch, 5 (12%) showing infections only in the kidney, and 11 (26%) showing infections in both organs. Both the pseudobranch and kidney were apparent primary infection sites, but pseudobranch infections appeared to persist longer in a population. Pseudobranch infections were frequently heavy and associated with extensive inflammation and necrosis of filament and lamellar tissues. The kidney had been the only infection site reported for Parvicapsula sp. in previous studies of coho salmon.  (+info)

Mucous cell responses in gill and skin of brown trout Salmo trutta fario in acidic, aluminium-containing stream water. (53/871)

Morphometric examination was carried out on the gills and skin of wild and caged hatchery brown trout Salmo trutta fario in an acidic (pH 4.9 to 5.4; Al 203 to 250 microg l(-1)) and in a non-acidic (pH 6.7 to 7.0; Al 27 to 67 microg l(-1)) stream in the Vosges Mountains (NE France) to assess the sublethal effects of acidic water on the mucous cell response. The caged fish were randomly collected after 2, 4, 7 and 11 d and the wild fish were obtained by electrofishing. After 2 d, a reduction of both mucous cell (MC) number and size was observed in the gills of fish held in the acidic stream, suggesting a massive mucus discharge. Hyperplasia and hypertrophy of cells immediately followed this mucus secretion. In the same fish population, skin examination showed a slight and delayed decrease of MC number but a significant increase of cell size. The number of mucous cells of gills and skin was similar in both wild trout populations, whereas a significant MC hypertrophy was observed in the wild fish of the acidic stream. The present field experiment indicates that caged fish could be useful as early indicators of acidification. In addition, the examination of wild populations suggested the occurrence of adaptive mechanisms, information that might be of importance in the context of river recovery programs.  (+info)

Cardiomyopathy syndrome in farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar: occurrence and direct financial losses for Norwegian aquaculture. (54/871)

Cardiomyopathy syndrome (CMS) was first diagnosed in the mid-1980s in farmed Atlantic salmon in Norway, and later also in Scotland and the Faeroe Islands. In Norway the number of diagnosed cases increased from 25 to 103 in the period from 1998 to 2001 according to the National Veterinary Institute (NVI) records. Very little is known about the causes of the disease and there is no documentation of its impact on the farmed salmon industry. This field survey was performed to collect information on occurrence, risk factors and the economic importance of CMS in sea farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in Norway. Data were collected in January 2001 from a total of 174 groups of farmed salmon which had been previously transferred to sea during 1999 and 2000. Approximately 11.5% of all groups of salmon in our study experienced cases of CMS. Affected fish were presumably in generally good condition prior to time of death. In fish which had completed the seawater production cycle, CMS occurred more than 1 yr (median 395 d, >2 kg body weight) after seawater transfer. In fish transferred into the sea during autumn 2000 which had not completed the seawater cycle during the study period, CMS was diagnosed at a weight as low as 700 g. Although sudden death is characteristic, CMS may be regarded as a chronic disease, with moderately elevated mortality rates at site level. Affected groups showed significantly increased mortality, causing a direct annual financial loss for the industry of Euros 4.5 to 8.8 million on fish farms. Preventive prescheduled slaughtering of salmon, which is performed on many affected farms, may be too costly when done too early.  (+info)

Experimental manipulation of egg carotenoids affects immunity of barn swallow nestlings. (55/871)

The yolk of bird eggs contains maternal carotenoids that may act as antioxidants thus influencing offspring performance and survival. However, to our knowledge, this hypothesis has not been subjected to experimental tests and the function of transmission of carotenoids to the egg is largely unknown. We directly manipulated the concentration of the main carotenoid (lutein) in the eggs of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) and analysed the effect of experimental manipulation on growth of nestlings and two fundamental components of their acquired immunity. Nestlings hatched from lutein-inoculated eggs had larger T-cell-mediated immune response compared with those of two control groups. T-cell-mediated immune response predicted nestling survival until fledging. However, lutein inoculation did not affect antibody response to an immunogen, body mass, tarsus length or plumage development. Nestling body mass and plumage development declined with egg laying order, but the effects of lutein inoculation were independent of egg laying order for all traits. Our results show that maternal yolk carotenoids can have a major effect in promoting a fundamental component of immunity that predicts offspring survival and suggests that adaptive early maternal effects can be mediated by transmission of antioxidants to eggs.  (+info)

The evolution of cursorial carnivores in the Tertiary: implications of elbow-joint morphology. (56/871)

The evolution of cursorial adaptations in Tertiary (65-1.65 Myr ago) carnivores has been a contentious issue. Most such studies have focused on the relationship between hind limb proportions and running speed. Here, we show morphometrically that in extant carnivores, the elbow joint has evolved in two distinct directions with mutually exclusive implications for locomotor ability and prey procurement. Some carnivores retain supinatory ability, allowing them to manipulate prey and other items with the forepaws. Such carnivores can become very large. Other carnivores lose the ability to supinate and become cursors. This allows for only moderate size increase. Modern carnivores above ca. 20 kg body mass are committed to one or other of these strategies. This threshold coincides with a postulated threshold in carnivore physiology. The biaxial pattern mostly follows phylogenetic lines, but a strong selective regime can override this signal, as shown by the extant cheetah. Oligocene (33.7-23.8 Myr ago) and early-middle Miocene (23.8-11.2 Myr ago) carnivores follow the same pattern, though in the Miocene the pattern is shifted towards larger body mass, which may be owing to the extraordinary richness of browsing ungulates at this time.  (+info)
