Sodium-Phosphate Cotransporter Proteins
Sodium-phosphate cotransporter proteins are membrane transport proteins that facilitate the active transport of inorganic phosphate (Pi) and sodium ions (Na+) across the cell membrane. They play a crucial role in maintaining phosphate homeostasis within the body by regulating the absorption and excretion of phosphate in the kidneys and intestines. These proteins are driven by the sodium gradient generated by the Na+/K+ ATPase pump, which provides the energy required for Pi transport against its concentration gradient. There are two major types of sodium-phosphate cotransporters: type IIa and type IIb, which differ in their kinetic properties, tissue distribution, and regulatory mechanisms. Dysfunction of these proteins has been implicated in various pathological conditions, including renal phosphate wasting disorders, tumoral calcinosis, and certain forms of hyperparathyroidism.
