Amyloid beta-Peptides
Amyloid beta-peptides (Aβ) are small protein fragments that accumulate and form amyloid plaques, which are a characteristic feature of Alzheimer's disease in the brain. These peptides are produced through the normal processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), but in Alzheimer's disease, an imbalance between production and clearance leads to their accumulation and aggregation into toxic oligomers and larger fibrillar structures. The buildup of Aβ is believed to contribute to neuronal dysfunction and death, ultimately leading to the cognitive decline seen in Alzheimer's disease.
