En familj DNA-virus med dubbelsträngade genom som främst angriper levern. Virusen orsakar hepatit hos människor och djur. Det finns två släkten, Avihepadnavirus och orthohepadnavirus. Hepadnavirus omfattar hepatit B-virus, ankhepatit B-virus, hägerhepatit B-virus, jordekorrehepatitvirus och murmeldjurshepatit B-virus.
