Ailuridae
Ailuridae is a family of mammals that includes only one extant species, the red panda (Ailurus fulgens). Red pandas are small, arboreal animals native to the forests of the Himalayas and southwestern China. They have a raccoon-like face and a long, bushy tail. Ailuridae is part of the superfamily Musteloidea, which also includes families such as Mustelidae (weasels, otters, and relatives) and Procyonidae (raccoons, coatis, and relatives). Historically, red pandas were classified within the raccoon family due to similarities in their behavior and appearance, but more recent genetic evidence has confirmed their distinctness as a separate family.
