Cross-sectional study of the association of abomasal displacement or volvulus with serum electrolyte and mineral concentrations in dairy cows. (26/1799)

The objective of this study was to evaluate serum mineral and electrolyte concentrations at the time of on-farm diagnosis of left displaced abomasum, right displaced abomasum, or abomasal volvulus in dairy cows. Data were collected from 104 affected cows and 96 control cows matched with cases, based on herd, parity, and stage of lactation. Cows with abomasal displacement or volvulus had significantly lower calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, and chloride concentrations and increased anion gap at the time of diagnosis compared with control cows from the same herds. The percentages of cases and controls with total serum calcium concentrations below the lower limit of the laboratory reference range (2.08 mmol/L [8.3 mg/dL]) were 70% and 23%, respectively. Based on the large percentage of cases with hypocalcemia, administering calcium salts at the time of treatment of field cases of abomasal displacement or volvulus may be beneficial.  (+info)

Cardiovascular evidence for an intermediate or higher metabolic rate in an ornithischian dinosaur. (27/1799)

Computerized tomography scans of a ferruginous concretion within the chest region of an ornithischian dinosaur reveal structures that are suggestive of a four-chambered heart and a single systemic aorta. The apparently derived condition of the cardiovascular system in turn suggests the existence of intermediate-to-high metabolic rates among dinosaurs.  (+info)

Nasogastric hyperalimentation through a polyethylene catheter: an alternative to central venous hyperalimentation. (28/1799)

We performed nasogastric hyperalimentation with polyethylene catheters and appropriate feeding solutions in 12 cachectic patients who had been referred as candidates for central venous hyperalimentation. Most patients had primary gastrointestinal disease. The duration of hyperalimentation averaged 31 days. Seven patients obtained rapid weight gain (average 0.3 kg/day) with the nasogastric hyperalimentation alone. An additional two were successfully repleted with the addition of parenteral fluids via peripheral veins. In the nine repleted patients, serum albumin rose by average 19%, 24-hr urine creatinine by average 21%, and triceps skinfold by average 46%. The nature of the weight gain in the nine successful cases was analyzed by the metabolic balance study technique. Average composition of the increment in weight was: 50% protoplasm, 48% extracellular fluid, 19% adipose tissue, and less than 1% bone. We conclude that nasogastric hyperalimentation can replace central venous hyperalimentation in a substantial proportion of patients now receiving the latter type of treatment.  (+info)

Effects of partial and total colectomy on mineral and acid-base homoeostasis in the rat: magnesium deficiency, hyperphosphaturia and osteopathy, in the presence of high serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D but normal parathyroid hormone. (29/1799)

The effects of colectomy on acid-base status, extra-osseous and bone minerals, calciotropic hormones and bone morphology have not yet been studied. To rectify this, groups of normally fed male rats were subjected to distal (n=11), proximal (n=12) or total (n=12) colectomy. Sham-operated rats (n=12) served as controls. At 112 (+/-2) days after colectomy the following changes were noted: (1) weight gain was delayed; (2) faecal excretion of calcium and phosphorus was normal, whereas that of magnesium was increased; (3) intestinal calcium secretion and absorption of calcium and phosphorus were normal, but magnesium absorption was decreased; (4) urinary excretion of magnesium was also decreased, that of phosphorus was increased, and that of pyridinium and deoxypyridinium tended to be high; (5) the serum levels of ionized magnesium, total calcium, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone were normal, while that of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D was markedly elevated; and (6) bone magnesium and phosphorus content were decreased, but bone calcium was normal, and thus the bone calcium/phosphorus ratio was high. These abnormalities were associated with moderate metabolic acidosis, as reflected by high urinary ammonium, low citrate and low total CO(2), but normal blood gases. Significant structural abnormalities of bone were not detectable, but trabecular bone tended to show rarefication. Distal colectomy had the least effect, whereas proximal and total colectomies had a distinct effect, on these parameters. It is concluded that colectomy in the rat causes: (1) a syndrome of magnesium deficiency of intestinal origin, compensated metabolic acidosis, urinary phosphorus loss, and high circulating 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels, with the degree depending on the extent of surgical resection; and (2) brittle bones, a feature characteristic of low bone magnesium and more generalized magnesium deficiency. The mechanisms leading to this syndrome are unknown, but altered tissue levels of magnesium and phosphorus may play a key role.  (+info)

Micronutrient supplementation and immune function in the elderly. (30/1799)

Immunologic function, particularly cell-mediated immunity, declines with age, contributing to the increased incidence of infectious diseases in the elderly. Nutrition may play a pivotal role in maintaining immune competence in older adults. Most studies to date have focused on micronutrient deficiencies and supplementation, sometimes using "mega-dose" formulations. Multivitamin/mineral supplements or specific micronutrients such as zinc and vitamin E may be of value; however, data suggest there is likely a therapeutic range for many micronutrients, and oversupplementation may be harmful. Specific alterations of dietary lipids may also be useful for modulating immune responses in the elderly. This review summarizes the prevalence of vitamin and mineral deficiencies in older adults and highlights the outcomes of trials of micronutrient supplementation to augment immune function in the elderly.  (+info)

Effects of pasture applied biosolids on performance and mineral status of grazing beef heifers. (31/1799)

Angus x Hereford heifers (n = 50) were randomly assigned to bahiagrass pastures treated with biosolids varying in mineral content and evaluated for mineral status, with special attention to Cu. Biosolids and NH4NO3 were all applied at the rate of either 179 kg N/ha (X) or twice this (2X). Fertilizer was applied to .81-ha pastures for the following treatments: 1) Baltimore biosolids (1X = 179 kg N/ha); 2) Baltimore biosolids (2X = 358 kg N/ha); 3) Tampa biosolids (1X = 179 kg N/ha); 4) Tampa biosolids (2X = 358 kg N/ha); or 5) control NH4NO3 (1X = 179 kg N/ha) applied at two times. Pastures were divided into five blocks with each treatment represented once in each block. Copper loads varied from 8.8 to 42.2 kg/ha, and Mo loads varied from .27 to 1.11 kg/ha. Heifers (two per pasture) grazed their assigned pastures exclusively for 176 d. Liver biopsies were taken from all animals at d 1, 99, and 176, and blood samples on d 1, 50, 99, 135, and 176. Liver and plasma were analyzed for selected mineral contents, and blood was analyzed for hemoglobin and hematocrit. Experimental animals were generally low in mineral status when assigned to pastures and deficient in Se and P. By d 50, plasma Ca, Mg, Se, P, and Zn were adequate for all treatments. Plasma Cu declined (P < .03) for all treatments from d 50 to 176. Plasma Cu reflected depleted liver Cu storage, with the two Tampa and highest Baltimore treatment means lower in plasma Cu than the control at 176 d. Liver Fe concentrations were adequate for all treatments, and Mo concentrations (< 2.18 mg/kg) did not approach levels indicative of toxicity. Liver Cu declined (P < .05) with time for all treatments. By d 99, animals receiving the two Baltimore treatments and the lowest Tampa application rate had lower (P < .05) liver Cu than the control, and all treatments were lower at 176 d. The decline of animal Cu status (liver and plasma) reflects the low Cu status of bahiagrass and the possibility of high forage S (.30 to .47%) interfering with Cu metabolism. Forage Mo was low but was slightly higher in biosolids-treated pastures. High levels of biosolids applications to bahiagrass pastures were not detrimental to mineral status except Cu, which had a tendency to decline in plasma and for all biosolids treatments declined in liver.  (+info)

Determination of intravenous non-protein energy and nitrogen requirements in growing rats. (32/1799)

Two experiments were conducted to estimate total non-protein energy and nitrogen requirements in growing healthy male Wistar rats nourished by parenteral nutrition. In experiment 1, non-protein energy varying from 30 to 70 kcal/day/rat were administered to animals receiving a constant dose of 80 mg nitrogen, plus vitamins and minerals. In experiment 2, nitrogen dosages varying from 0 to 280 mg N/day/rat with a constant dose of 60 kcal non-protein energy were studied. The formulation of the amino acid solution used in both experiments was based upon recommended oral amino acid requirements for growing rats. Dextrose served as the source of non-protein energy. Weight gain and nitrogen balance during a 6-day experimental period were used to determine requirements. Plasma free amino acids were also analyzed to evaluate the amino acid solution. Results indicate that under total parenteral nutrition conditions 578 to 621 mg/kg body weight3/4 nitrogen and 171 to 182 kcal/kg body weight3/4 non-protein energy are required to achieve growth of approximately 3 g/day. Inconsistent responses of plasma amino acid concentrations to the amounts infused were observed. It is suggested that the determined requirements can be applied as guidelines to research using the rat as an animal model in total parenteral nutrition.  (+info)
