Peritoneal dialysis in anuric patients: old problems and new perspectives. (49/116)

Anuric patients are often excluded from peritoneal dialysis (PD) because of the fear that PD is inadequate to treat this higher-risk group of patients. However, advances in PD knowledge and technique allow better and adjusted treatments. There is now clinical evidence that anuric patients can be successfully treated with PD, while new solutions promise to mitigate some limitations of automated PD, such as sodium and fluid removal and preservation of membrane function.  (+info)

Renal tubular dysgenesis in Israel: pathologist's experience and literature review. (50/116)

BACKGROUND: Renal tubular dysgenesis is a rare lethal kidney abnormality clinically manifested by olighydramnios, anuria and respiratory distress. Most of the information on this entity is provided by case reports and short series. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incidence and comparative frequency of clinical manifestations in different etiologic-pathogenic variants of RTD in Israel and in summarized published data. METHODS: Stillborn and neonatal autopsy material from nine medical centers in northern and central Israel was studied. Information concerning pregnancy, labor and postnatal status and autopsy findings of cases with histologically, histochemically and immunohistochemically confirmed RTD were obtained from corresponding reports and from published material. RESULTS: From the 1538 autopsies of fetuses (2 20 weeks gestation) and neonates that were performed between 1976 and 2007 we identified 12 cases of RTD (0.78%). Abnormality occurred more often (1.4%) in the Upper and Western Galilee than in Israel as a whole. CONCLUSIONS: Our study and a review of the literature showed that the autosomal recessive variant of RTD was more frequent than twin-twin transfusion-induced. Most symptoms were similar in all variants of RTD, but their frequency was different in each of them.  (+info)

A case of primary cutaneous B-cell lymphoma of the knee. (52/116)

We report the case of a gentleman with a primary cutaneous B cell lymphoma of the leg who underwent an amputation and later died. This is an uncommon type of cutaneous lymphoma with poor prognosis and the case demonstrates how aggressive the tumor can become.  (+info)

Ureteric sludge syndrome. (54/116)

Four cases of a form of obstructive uropathy previously unreported in children are described. All presented with oligoanuria and either flank pain or fluid retention and had evidence of crystalline sludge in their lower ureters. Three cases had an underlying crystalluria.  (+info)
