Does a pinched nerve in the lumbar spine causes tenderness in the leg?

I know that a pinched sciatic nerve causes pain in the back of the thigh. Does a pinched nerve also causes tenderness in the back of the thigh - I mean would be the pain from a pinched sciatic nerve aggravated by applying pressure on the back of the thigh. 

I can't find a definite answer from this article about a herniated disc.

I'm asking because I want to know if it is possible to differ between a pinched nerve and muscle strain by checking the tenderness in the leg.
