In patients with these disorders, the immune system, which is supposed to keep a person free of infections, attacks parts of the nervous system by mistake.. The inflammatory attacks are also referred to as demyelinating attacks because the immune system attacks and destroys myelin, the insulating material that surrounds nerves.
