Chorioretinitis may be associated with all forms of toxoplasmosis, but is usually a late sequel of congenital toxoplasmosis. The severe ocular lesions in infants may lead to blindness.

This measurement is often applied in the fitting of contact lenses and in diagnosing corneal diseases or corneal changes including keratoconus, which occur after keratotomy and keratoplasty.
Albinism affecting the eye in which pigment of the hair and skin is normal or only slightly diluted. The classic type is X-linked (Nettleship-Falls), but an autosomal recessive form also exists. Ocular abnormalities may include reduced pigmentation of the iris, nystagmus, photophobia, strabismus, and decreased visual acuity.
The functional superiority and preferential use of one eye over the other. The term is usually applied to superiority in sighting (VISUAL PERCEPTION) or motor task but not difference in VISUAL ACUITY or dysfunction of one of the eyes. Ocular dominance can be modified by visual input and NEUROTROPHIC FACTORS.
Either of the two principal arteries on both sides of the neck that supply blood to the head and neck; each divides into two branches, the internal carotid artery and the external carotid artery.

Disorders that feature impairment of eye movements as a primary manifestation of disease. These conditions may be divided into infranuclear, nuclear, and supranuclear disorders. Diseases of the eye muscles or oculomotor cranial nerves (III, IV, and VI) are considered infranuclear. Nuclear disorders are caused by disease of the oculomotor, trochlear, or abducens nuclei in the BRAIN STEM. Supranuclear disorders are produced by dysfunction of higher order sensory and motor systems that control eye movements, including neural networks in the CEREBRAL CORTEX; BASAL GANGLIA; CEREBELLUM; and BRAIN STEM. Ocular torticollis refers to a head tilt that is caused by an ocular misalignment. Normal visual acuity is expressed as 20/20 indicating that one can see at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. Visual acuity can also be influenced by brightness, color, and contrast.
A value equal to the total volume flow divided by the cross-sectional area of the vascular bed.

Filamentary keratitis or erosion of the conjunctival and corneal epithelium may be caused by these disorders. Sensation of the presence of a foreign body in the eye and burning of the eyes may occur.
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the transparent membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and covers the white part of the eye, resulting in symptoms such as redness, swelling, itching, burning, discharge, and increased sensitivity to light.
Abnormally low intraocular pressure often related to chronic inflammation (uveitis).

Filarial infection of the eyes transmitted from person to person by bites of Onchocerca volvulus-infected black flies. The microfilariae of Onchocerca are thus deposited beneath the skin. They migrate through various tissues including the eye. Those persons infected have impaired vision and up to 20% are blind. The incidence of eye lesions has been reported to be as high as 30% in Central America and parts of Africa.
The ten-layered nervous tissue membrane of the eye. It is continuous with the OPTIC NERVE and receives images of external objects and transmits visual impulses to the brain. Its outer surface is in contact with the CHOROID and the inner surface with the VITREOUS BODY. The outer-most layer is pigmented, whereas the inner nine layers are transparent.
A chronic blistering disease with predilection for mucous membranes and less frequently the skin, and with a tendency to scarring. It is sometimes called ocular pemphigoid because of conjunctival mucous membrane involvement.

Inflammation of the choroid in which the sensory retina becomes edematous and opaque. The inflammatory cells and exudate may burst through the sensory retina to cloud the vitreous body.

The application of drug preparations to the surfaces of the body, especially the skin (ADMINISTRATION, CUTANEOUS) or mucous membranes. This method of treatment is used to avoid systemic side effects when high doses are required at a localized area or as an alternative systemic administration route, to avoid hepatic processing for example.

The failure by the observer to measure or identify a phenomenon accurately, which results in an error. Sources for this may be due to the observer's missing an abnormality, or to faulty technique resulting in incorrect test measurement, or to misinterpretation of the data. Two varieties are inter-observer variation (the amount observers vary from one another when reporting on the same material) and intra-observer variation (the amount one observer varies between observations when reporting more than once on the same material).

Retinal diseases refer to a diverse group of vision-threatening disorders that affect the retina's structure and function, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa, and macular edema, among others.
Infections of the eye caused by minute intracellular agents. These infections may lead to severe inflammation in various parts of the eye - conjunctiva, iris, eyelids, etc. Several viruses have been identified as the causative agents. Among these are Herpesvirus, Adenovirus, Poxvirus, and Myxovirus.
The dioptric adjustment of the EYE (to attain maximal sharpness of retinal imagery for an object of regard) referring to the ability, to the mechanism, or to the process. Ocular accommodation is the effecting of refractive changes by changes in the shape of the CRYSTALLINE LENS. Loosely, it refers to ocular adjustments for VISION, OCULAR at various distances. Inflammation of the eyelids.
The positioning and accommodation of eyes that allows the image to be brought into place on the FOVEA CENTRALIS of each eye.
Studies comparing two or more treatments or interventions in which the subjects or patients, upon completion of the course of one treatment, are switched to another. In the case of two treatments, A and B, half the subjects are randomly allocated to receive these in the order A, B and half to receive them in the order B, A. A refractive error in which rays of light entering the EYE parallel to the optic axis are brought to a focus in front of the RETINA when accommodation (ACCOMMODATION, OCULAR) is relaxed. This results from an overly curved CORNEA or from the eyeball being too long from front to back. It is also called nearsightedness.
A ubiquitous sodium salt that is commonly used to season food.
In screening and diagnostic tests, the probability that a person with a positive test is a true positive (i.e., has the disease), is referred to as the predictive value of a positive test; whereas, the predictive value of a negative test is the probability that the person with a negative test does not have the disease. Predictive value is related to the sensitivity and specificity of the test.
Refers to any inflammation of the sclera including episcleritis, a benign condition affecting only the episclera, which is generally short-lived and easily treated. Classic scleritis, on the other hand, affects deeper tissue and is characterized by higher rates of visual acuity loss and even mortality, particularly in necrotizing form. Its characteristic symptom is severe and general head pain. Scleritis has also been associated with systemic collagen disease. Etiology is unknown but is thought to involve a local immune response. Treatment is difficult and includes administration of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agents such as corticosteroids. Inflammation of the sclera may also be secondary to inflammation of adjacent tissues, such as the conjunctiva.

Procedures for finding the mathematical function which best describes the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. In linear regression (see LINEAR MODELS) the relationship is constrained to be a straight line and LEAST-SQUARES ANALYSIS is used to determine the best fit. In logistic regression (see LOGISTIC MODELS) the dependent variable is qualitative rather than continuously variable and LIKELIHOOD FUNCTIONS are used to find the best relationship. Rapid pneumatic and Mackey-Marg applanation tonometry to evaluate the postural effect on intraocular pressure. (1/599)

A postural study was conducted in three separate groups of subjects. The first group comprised 20 women volunteers with an average age of 20-75 years. In this group, the study was conducted by the pneumatonograph only. Mean pressure recorded was 15-65 +/- 0-25 mmHg and there was an average rise of 1-4 mmHg in supine posture. Groups 2 and 3 comprised 151 non-glaucomatous and 108 glaucomatous eyes respectively in the age range of 30 to 85 years. In these two groups, the study was conducted using the PTG and the Mackay-Marg tonometer. Clinical evaluation of the Mackay-Marg with the PTG gave significant correlation, with mean Mackay-Marg readings being 1-13 mmHg higher. The intraocular pressure when changing from seated to the supine position increased on average by 2-71 and 4-04 mmHg, respectively in Groups 2 and 3 and by 2-51 and 3-72 mmHg by Vackay-Marg, suggesting a higher change in glaucomatous subjects. Pressure on resumption of sitting was found to be lower than the initial pressure. Postural change also showed some direct relationship with age in non-glaucomatous subjects.  (+info)

Asymmetry in optic disc parameters: the Blue Mountains Eye Study. (2/599)

PURPOSE: To examine asymmetry in vertical optic disc parameters among subjects classified as normal, as having ocular hypertension (OH), and as having open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in a population-based sample. METHODS: The Blue Mountains Eye Study examined 3654 people aged 49 to 97 years, including 2929 normal subjects, 118 with OH, and 79 with OAG in the groups of interest for the asymmetry study. Optic disc parameters were measured in a masked manner from stereo optic disc photographs. RESULTS: Vertical disc diameter asymmetry (the absolute value of left minus right disc diameters) was similar among normal, OH, and OAG groups (median, 0.07-0.08 mm). Vertical cup- disc ratio asymmetry was higher in patients with OAG (median, 0.11) than in normal subjects (median, 0.06; P < 0.0001) and in those with OH (median, 0.05; P < 0.0001) but was similar between normal subjects and patients with OH (P = 0.17). A cup- disc ratio asymmetry of 0.2 or more was found in 24% of patients with OAG, compared with 1% of patients with OH and 6% of normal subjects. Corresponding rates for cup- disc ratio asymmetry of 0.3 or more in these three groups were 10%, 0%, and 1%, respectively. Using multiple linear regression, cup-disc ratio asymmetry was associated with disc diameter asymmetry and intraocular pressure asymmetry. However, these two factors explained only 3% of the variability of cup- disc ratio asymmetry and 20% of cup diameter asymmetry. CONCLUSIONS: Despite differences between the OAG group and either the OH or normal groups, asymmetry alone was not useful in identifying patients with OAG. At all levels of asymmetry, subjects were more likely to be classified as normal than with OH or OAG.  (+info)

The effect of miotics on the intraocular pressure of conscious owl monkeys. (3/599)

The intraocular pressure of conscious, unsedated owl monkeys (Aotus trivirgatus) was measured with an applanation tonometer. Untreated eyes of the conscious animals were found to have higher values than those reported for owl monkeys anesthetized with pentobarbitone. Locally applied pilocarpine, carbachol, and oxotremorine gave concentration-related reduction in pressure, oxotremorine being the most potent and having longer duration of effect than the other compounds. Slight reductions were also observed with aceclidine and R. S. 86. These results are discussed in relation to the effects of miotics in man.  (+info)

Age-related abnormalities in arterial compliance identified by pressure pulse contour analysis: aging and arterial compliance. (4/599)

The objective of this study was to evaluate age-related changes in pulsatile arterial function. Aging alters arterial pulsatile function and produces consistent changes in the pressure pulse contour. A reduced systemic arterial compliance that can be derived from analysis of the pulse contour is regarded as the best clinical index of impaired pulsatile arterial function and may mark the presence of early vascular damage. We analyzed intra-arterial brachial artery waveforms in 115 healthy normotensive volunteers (83 men, 32 women) and radial artery waveforms obtained with the use of a calibrated tonometer device in 212 healthy volunteers (147 women, 65 men). A computer-based assessment of the diastolic pressure decay and a modified Windkessel model of the circulation were used to quantify changes in arterial waveform morphology in terms of large artery or capacitive compliance, oscillatory or reflective compliance in the small arteries, inertance, and systemic vascular resistance. Large artery compliance and oscillatory compliance correlated negatively with age for both invasive and noninvasive groups (r=-0.50 and r=-0.55; r=-0.37 and r=-0.66; P<0.001 for all). The slopes of the regression lines for the decline in oscillatory compliance with age were significantly steeper than those recorded for large artery compliance estimates. The change in blood pressure with age independently contributed to the decrease in large artery compliance but not oscillatory compliance in both groups. Consistent age-related changes were found in the pressure pulse contour by analysis of waveforms obtained invasively or noninvasively from the upper limb. The change in the oscillatory or reflective compliance estimate was independent of blood pressure change and may represent a better marker than large artery or capacitive compliance of the degenerative aging process in altering pulsatile arterial function.  (+info)

Elevation of human intraocular pressure at night under moderate illumination. (5/599)

PURPOSE: An endogenous elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) occurs at night in healthy young adults. The authors studied whether or not this IOP elevation can be detected under moderate illumination. METHODS: Twenty-five healthy volunteers, ages 18 to 25 years, were housed overnight in a sleep laboratory under a strictly controlled light-dark environment. Intraocular pressure was measured in the supine position every 2 hours, using a pneumatonometer. An 8-hour sleep period was assigned to each volunteer according to individual's accustomed sleep cycle. In the early part of this assigned period, sleep was encouraged with room lights off. Researchers performed IOP measurements at two time points with the aid of night vision goggles. In the middle to the late part of the assigned period, lights were turned on twice for a 1-hour interval. The light intensity was the same as before the bedtime. At the ending of each light period, IOP was measured under illumination. RESULTS: Average IOP was significantly higher in the assigned sleep period versus outside the period. The trough of mean IOP occurred just before the bedtime, and then IOP gradually increased and peaked at the end of the 8-hour assigned sleep period. The difference between the trough and peak IOP was 3.5 +/- 0.7 mm Hg (mean +/- SEM, n = 25). Within the assigned sleep period, the average IOP determined under illumination was significantly higher than the average IOP preceding the illumination. CONCLUSIONS: Elevation of IOP occurred during the assigned sleep period with two 1-hour light exposures of moderate intensity. Environmental light at night had no significant effect on the nocturnal IOP elevation in healthy young adults.  (+info)

Augmentation of central arterial pressure in type 1 diabetes. (6/599)

OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis is more severe in individuals with diabetes. Whether diabetic subjects have accelerated arterial hardening (i.e., arteriosclerosis) is less clear. Arteriosclerosis increases pulse-wave velocity and can augment central arterial pressure due to early wave reflection. The aim of this study was to determine whether subjects with type 1 diabetes had evidence of increased arterial stiffness by using pulse-wave analysis. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Radial artery pressure waveforms were obtained noninvasively by applanation tonometry (PWV Medical Blood Pressure Analysis System, Sydney). A central aortic waveform can be derived by using a transfer function used in previous studies during cardiac catheterization. A total of 89 subjects with type 1 diabetes (46 men and 43 women, aged 34.0 +/- 11.0 years, duration of diabetes 13.1 years [interquartile range 5.8-24.3], HbA1c 8.2 +/- 1.7%) and 95 control subjects (44 men and 51 women, aged 36.1 +/- 12.0 years) were studied. The central aortic waveform allowed the determination of 1) the aortic augmentation index (AAI), a parameter that reflects the degree to which central arterial pressure is augmented by wave reflection, and 2) the subendocardial viability ratio (SEVR), which is a measure of myocardial perfusion relative to cardiac workload. RESULTS: In multivariate analysis, diabetes was an important determinant of AAI (P = 0.001). The higher AAI was mainly evident in the men, for whom diabetes was a highly significant covariate (P = 0.006); this was not the case for diabetic women (P = 0.2). Nondiabetic men had a lower AAI than nondiabetic women (103.7 +/- 18.6 vs. 117.0 +/- 22.3%, respectively, P = 0.002), but this difference was abolished by diabetes (110.7 +/- 18.5 vs. 116.1 +/- 18.7%, respectively, P = 0.2). Subjects with type 1 diabetes had a significantly lower mean SEVR compared with control subjects (139.2 +/- 28.3 vs. 163.6 +/- 27.4%, respectively, P < 0.0001). In multivariate analysis, diabetes was an important determinant of SEVR (P = 0.001). A significant interaction between diabetes and age was evident (P = 0.0001), which suggests that the effect of age is modified by diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that central systolic blood pressure is increased in relatively young individuals with type 1 diabetes, although myocardial perfusion related to cardiac workload is decreased. These changes can be explained by more rapid pulse-wave velocity resulting from arterial stiffening.  (+info)

Effects of oxygen and carbogen breathing on choroidal hemodynamics in humans. (7/599)

PURPOSE: Previous studies in humans have demonstrated that oxygen (O2) reduces retinal vessel caliber and blood flow, whereas carbon dioxide (CO2) usually has opposite effects. The influence of O2 and CO2 on choroidal circulation is not fully understood, however. This study was conducted to determine the effects of systemic hyperoxia and hypercapnia on global choroidal hemodynamics, as evaluated by pulsatile ocular blood flow (POBF) tonography. METHODS: In this experiment, 16 and 22 healthy volunteers breathed 100% O2 and carbogen, respectively. POBF and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured twice with a UK OBF tonograph for each of the following conditions: in ambient room air breathing, after breathing pure O2 or carbogen through a face mask, and in ambient room air 10 minutes after mask removal. Heart rate (HR), hemoglobin oxygen saturation level (SaO2), and systemic arterial blood pressure (BP) were monitored throughout testing. The end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) level and respiratory rate (RR) were also recorded during carbogen breathing. RESULTS: Results revealed that HR was reduced (P<0.004) and SaO2 was increased (P = 0.0001) by both oxygen and carbogen breathing. Systemic arterial BP remained stable throughout the experiment. EtCO2 was increased during carbogen breathing (P = 0.0001), whereas RR was reduced (P = 0.0175). IOP was significantly decreased during both phases of the experiment (P = 0.0001). Finally, POBF was not altered by pure O2 breathing, but it increased on average by 7.7% during carbogen breathing (P = 0.0222). CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained with POBF tonography indicate that the choroid reacts to increased blood CO2 concentration, but not to systemic hyperoxia, in a manner similar to that in retinal and brain vessels.  (+info)

Twenty-four-hour pattern of intraocular pressure in the aging population. (8/599)

PURPOSE: To characterize the 24-hour pattern of intraocular pressure (IOP) in a sample of the aging human population. METHODS: Twenty-one healthy volunteers 50 to 69 years of age were housed in a sleep laboratory for 24 hours. Experimental conditions were strictly controlled with a 16-hour light period and an 8-hour dark period. Sleep was encouraged in the dark period. Intraocular pressure was measured using a pneumatonometer every 2 hours (total of 12 times). Measurements were taken in both the sitting position and the supine position during the light/wake period but only in the supine position during the dark period. RESULTS: When the sitting IOP data from the light/wake period and the supine IOP data from the dark period were considered, elevation and reduction of IOP occurred around the scheduled lights-off and lights-on transitions, respectively. Mean IOP in the dark period was significantly higher than mean IOP in the light/wake period. The trough appeared at the end of the light/wake period, and the peak appeared at the beginning of the dark period. The magnitude of trough-peak difference was 8.6+/-0.8 mm Hg (mean +/- SEM). Cosine fits of 24-hour IOP data showed a significant 24-hour rhythm. When IOP data from just the supine position were analyzed, the trough-peak IOP difference was 3.4+/-0.7 mm Hg, with similar clock times for the trough and the peak. Cosine fits of supine IOP data showed no statistically significant 24 hour rhythm. CONCLUSIONS: Nocturnal elevation of IOP occurred in this sample of the aging population. The trough of IOP appeared at the end of the light/wake period, and the peak appeared at the beginning of the dark period. The main factor in the nocturnal IOP elevation appeared to be the shift from daytime upright posture to supine posture at night.  (+info)
