Effects of underfeeding and refeeding on weight and cellularity of splanchnic organs in ewes. (1/38)

We assessed the effects of a long and severe period of underfeeding, followed by a rapid refeeding with a high-concentrate diet, on weight, protein mass, and cellularity of the splanchnic organs in adult ewes. Twenty-four ewes, allocated to four groups of six, were fed a forage diet (50% regrowth of natural grassland hay and 50% wheat straw) either at maintenance (groups M and MO) or at 40% maintenance (groups U and UO) for 78 d. Groups M and U were then slaughtered, and groups MO and UO were subsequently overfed a high-concentrate diet (52% hay, 20% barley, 16% rapeseed meal, 4% fish meal, and 8% Megalac) at 236% maintenance for 26 d before being slaughtered. During the experiment, feed was adjusted to maintain feed supply at a constant percentage of animal requirements. After slaughter, fresh weight, dry weight, and protein mass of the reticulorumen, omasum, abomasum, small intestine, large intestine, and liver were measured. Cellularity was assessed from nucleic acids and protein contents for both ruminal mucosa and muscular-serosa layers, jejunum, and liver. The concentrations of ubiquitin and cathepsin D mRNA were measured in ruminal mucosa and muscular-serosa layers and in jejunum. Underfeeding decreased protein mass of splanchnic organs, especially in liver (-29%) and reticulorumen (-39%). Refeeding previously underfed animals increased protein mass of liver (+102%) and small intestine (+59%). No carry-over effect of the previous level of intake (UO vs. MO) was observed on the protein mass of splanchnic tissues after 26 d of refeeding. Variations in liver mass were mainly due to hypertrophy, as determined by the protein:DNA ratio, whereas variations in small intestinal mass were mainly due to hyperplasia, as determined by the amount of DNA. By contrast, changes in rumen mass associated with increasing ME intake seemed to be related to hypertrophy in the muscular-serosal component and hyperplasia in the epithelial component. The concentrations of ubiquitin and cathepsin D mRNA in the rumen and jejunum were not modified by feeding level, demonstrating that the expression of these genes for proteolytic enzymes was unchanged under these conditions.  (+info)

Stomach motility in insulin-treated sheep. (2/38)

The effect of insulin-induced hypoglycaemia on the motility of the reticulum, rumen and abomasum of sheep was investigated using small lightly inflated balloons connected to transducers and a multichannel recorder. The principle response recorded was an inhibition of reticulo-ruminal and abomasal motility, occurring in 'resting' cycles only, and not during eating or rumination. The only hypermotility recorded was that shown by the abomasum just before the onset of inhibition. Ruminating cycles were recorded as frequently during hypoglycaemia as in control periods, and showed no abnormality. The inhibition was reversed by intravenous glucose or adrenaline and by feeding or ruminating.  (+info)

Nitric oxide-containing neurons in the bovine gut, with special reference to their relationship with VIP and galanin. (3/38)

The presence and distribution of nicotinamide dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d)-containing neurons have been studied by means of NADPH-d histochemistry in different regions of the adult cow gut, from the esophagus to the rectum. NADPH-d and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) were constantly recognized to be colocalized in the same neuron. The colocalization of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and galanin in such nitrergic neurons was also studied by means of combined histochemical and immunofluorescence techniques. NADPH-d-positive neurons were present along the myenteric plexus of the entire gut, and in the submucous plexus from the abomasum to the rectum. Notably, they formed two types of nerve networks in the submucous connective tissue of the jejunum-ileum. NADPH-d-positive innervation of the muscle layers occurred throughout the tract, and sometimes a clear correspondence was noted between the number of reactive fibres and the thickness of the muscle. Nitrergic fibres also occurred in the mucosa and often were in relation to glands and blood vessels. The nitrergic neurons varied in size, shape, and intensity of staining, and often their terminals were seen to surround unstained perikarya. Various types of neurons were recognized on the basis of their chemical content; one of them contained galanin, VIP and NOS simultaneously. The present results suggest that the nitrergic neurons of the bovine gastrointestinal tract play roles presumably for controlling the motility of the gut and the conduction of interneuronal impulses.  (+info)

Fusobacteriosis in captive wild-caught pronghorns (Antilocapra americana). (4/38)

An outbreak of Fusobacterium necrophorum-induced septicemia occurred in a group of 40 captive wild-caught pronghorns (Antilocapra americana). Primary pododermatitis or necrotic stomatitis progressed to produce fatal septicemia with metastatic lesions in the forestomachs, lung, liver, and cecum in 38 of the animals. Two remaining animals were euthanatized because of chronic pododermatitis. Housing the animals in a pasture previously used by bovids and heavy rains with persistence of ground water pools in the pasture were contributing factors in the pathogenesis of this outbreak.  (+info)

The provision of solid feeds to veal calves: I. Growth performance, forestomach development, and carcass and meat quality. (5/38)

Growth performance, forestomach development, and carcass and meat quality of veal calves fed a milk replacer diet (Control) were compared to those obtained from calves fed the same liquid diet plus 250 g x calf(-1) x d(-1) of dried beet pulp or wheat straw. Three groups of 46 Polish Friesian calves, balanced according to initial BW, were assigned to the three dietary treatments in a fattening trial, which lasted 160 d. The provision of either solid feed did not affect the milk replacer intake. However, calves' ADG was increased (P < 0.01) only by feeding the beet pulp diet. The administration of both solid feeds improved calves' health status; calves fed solid feeds required fewer iron treatments for low hemoglobin and needed less medical treatments for respiratory or gastrointestinal diseases. In comparison to the Control calves, the provision of wheat straw and beet pulp increased iron intake throughout the fattening period by 41 and 130%, respectively. However, only calves fed beet pulp showed higher levels of hemoglobin and plasma iron concentrations (P < 0.05), whereas the same blood parameters were similar between Control calves and those fed wheat straw. At slaughter, both solid feeds led to empty forestomach weights heavier than those of Controls without reducing dressing percentage. A lower (P less than .10) net output of diaminopimelic acid as an indicator of bacterial CP and DM was associated with a lower (P less than .10) net output of CP from the stomach of steers fed HM diets. This lower net output of CP from the stomach, coupled with no effect (P greater than .10) of Mo on CP in the small intestine, indicated that less CP was absorbed from the small intestine. Supplemental Mo in association with S appeared to prevent (P less than .10) an apparent higher net output of methionine from the stomach when supplemental S alone was in the diet. Ytterbium attached to sorghum was used as a particulate marker. Duodenal, ileal, and fecal samples were taken 1 h postfeeding after a 14-d adaption to diets. Whole samples were analyzed. Preduodenal starch digestion (%) was 89, 83, 76, and 70, and starch digestion over the total tract was 99, 97, 95 and 91 for R, U, A, and D, respectively. Starch digestion proximal to each site (duodenum and ileum) was enhanced (P less than .05) by R and U compared with D. Within the small intestine, there was a linear relationship (P less than .003) between starch digestion and daily starch supply. However, digestibility of starch in the small intestine (mean = 45%) was not different among diets. Apparent digestibility of starch in the large intestine was not significantly different from digestibility in the small intestine.
