Abstract The ability to localize sounds in space is important to mammals in terms of awareness of the environment and social contact with each other. In many mammals, and particularly in humans, localization of sound sources in the horizontal plane is achieved by an extraordinary sensitivity to interaural time differences ITDs. Auditory signals from sound sources, which are not centrally located in front of the listener travel different distances to the ears and thereby generate ITDs. These ITDs are first processed by binaural sensitive neurons of the supe...

Sound localization and a treaded rover. 3 Comments. by:. Mike Nathan. May 23, 2011. recently wrote in to share a pair of projects that have been keeping him busy as of late. The first is a sound localization system not unlike one we showed you a few weeks ago. The difference is that his system displays the sound source via a set of LEDs rather than by motion, making it far less prone to interference by things like servo noise. His system uses four identical circuits, each of which are wired to a separate analog input on the Arduino. Each channel is adjustable, making it easy to tweak how the system responds to a particular sound. His second project is a sizable robot built on the Motoruino platform. His contraption features several stacked control boards that handle the bots locomotion as well as camera control. It connects to his computer via a Bluetooth module that boasts a 1 mile range, allowing him to control everything from his PC. is using the robot as a prototype for a much larger scale creation, and h...

The Kub was a compact, two-way, bass reflex loudspeaker using a 5.25-inch diameter paper cone woofer with flexible rubber surround and a 3" paper cone tweeter. The paper cone tweeter looks very different from the silk or metal dome tweeters seen in many modern loudspeakers. Cone tweeters are more directional than dome tweeters and consequently the listening 'sweet spot' tends to be much smaller. The bass port, which vents air taken from the space behind the woofer, is mounted on the front of the enclosure. The grille is designed to be removable. In the 1980s, the 'Council of Industrial Design' CoID considered the Keesonic Kub to be a 'good design' and it was consequently selected for ...

Description/Abstract Sound reproduction systems using open arrays of loudspeakers in rooms suffer from degradations due to room reflections. These reflections can be reduced using pre-compensation of the loudspeaker signals, but this requires calibration of the array in the room, and is processor-intensive. This paper examines 3D sound reproduction systems using spherical arrays of fixed-directivity loudspeakers which reduce the sound field radiated outside the array. A generalized form of the simple sourc...

*  Measuring the frequency response of a loudspeaker
... Home Library Application notes Measuring the frequency response of a loudspeaker. Measuring the frequency response of a loudspeaker. The Pico ADC-216 mentioned has been replaced by the PicoScope 4262. This application note describes a simple method for measuring the frequency response of a loudspeaker using the Pico ADC-216 oscilloscope. Normally, specialist equipment is needed to make these measurements due to the problems of echoes in the measuring environment. The output of a loudspeaker is difficult to measure because it has to be done with a microphone. Measurement microphones are usually omnidirectional which means that they pick up, not only the output from the loudspeaker, but also any background noise and sound reflected from objects around the loudspeaker. This means that echoes from the walls of the room where the measurements are done corrupt the direct output from the speaker. Another technique is to make the measurements outdoors with the test speaker and microphone at the top of a tower. T...

*  The Subcortical Auditory System: Psychophysics of Binaural Hearing
... Autocorrelation of the signals from each of the ears, as well as cross-correlation of the signals from both ears, are performed. Specific inhibition and excitation effects are extensively present. Figure A.2 : Architecture for an application oriented model of binaural hearing: Binaural signals as delivered by the ear-and-head array or its electronic simulation are fed into a model of the subcortical auditory system, implying simulation of the function of the cochleae and of binaural interaction as essential modules. the cochleae, including receptors and first neurons; plus a set of binaural processors to identify interaurally correlated contents of the signals from the two cochleae and to measure interaural arrival-time and level differences; along with, eventually, additional monaural processors. It can be shown that this stage renders a family of running interaural cross-correlation functions as output. Thus we arrive at a three-dimensional pattern interaural arrival-time difference, critical-band freq...

*  Virtual surround
... 'Virtual surround' is an audio system that attempts to create the perception that there are many more sources of sound than are actually present. Such systems are popular among consumers who want to enjoy the experience of surround sound without the large number of speakers that are traditionally required to do so. A virtual surround system must provide a means for 2-dimensional imaging of sound, using some properties of the human auditory system. The way that the auditory system localises a sound source is a topic that is studied in the field of psychoacoustics. Thus, virtual surround systems use knowledge of psychoacoustics to "trick" the listener. Some methods use knowledge of head-related transfer function HRTF. With an appropriate HRTF the signals required at the eardrums for the listener to perceive sound from any direction can be calculated. Some virtual surround systems work by directing a strong beam of sound to reflect off the walls of a room so that the listener hears the reflection at a highe...

... Audience Introduces ClairAudient LSA 4+4 Full-Range Loudspeakers. Home Theater News. Bookshelf-Monitor Loudspeakers News. Written by Dick Ward. Monday, 21 December 2009. The ClairAudient LSA 4+4 is a loudspeaker with a design unlike many others. It was created to produce the best sound quality possible, of course, but by using different techniques than most. The 4+4 uses a total of eight drivers four facing forward and four facing to the rear that are housed in a 17 high, 15 wide, 12 deep enclosure. Unlike most loudspeakers though, the LSA 4+4 uses eight of the exact same Audience A3 drivers. Audience A3 drivers measure only 3 in diameter, but are capable of an impressive range. According to Audience, the A3 has a relatively flat response from 40Hz to 22kHz. By eliminating the need for separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, complications such as phase distortion and response degradation are eliminated. Each A3 driver has a magnesium alloy cone and a dust cape made to control high frequency cone brea...

*  Utah Loudspeakers
... A recent remark by message board poster indicating that many speakers sold under the Trusonic label were actually made by Utah got me to digging for evidence in support of this claim. In the process, I not only found evidence to support this contention, but I also came up with a family tree of sorts for Utah and Trusonic speakers circa 1970-74. Utah was primarily a raw driver manufacturer with a single plant located in Huntington Indiana. It flourished in the 1960s and 70s, as it undoubtedly made drivers for a large share of the one-piece console stereos that were proving increasingly popular by the mass market during the 60s and the 70s. In addition, I believe that they were a major supplier of drivers for many Allied house brand Knight speakers in the 1960s. In my 1970 Allied Radio catalog, they were selling complete Utah speaker systems as well as two and three-way single raw drivers right along those labeled as Knight. I suspect Utah also supplied Allied and later Radio Shack with raw replacement dri...

*  .. Low Frequency Sound Therapy .. No Responses (yet)
Thanks to new research though, there may now be a new treatment alternative to help relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Known as low frequency sound therapy, this treatment alternative may be just what you need to help get your health back on track. The pitch of the sounds that we hear are actually determined by the frequency that a sound wavelength is traveling at: a high pitch noise is traveling at a high frequency while a low pitch noise is traveling at a low frequency. Low frequency sounds are comprised of those sound wavelengths that are between the range of 17 Hertz and 0.001 Hertz. Humans cannot hear most of these low frequency sounds, because we only recognize sounds traveling at frequencies between 20 Hertz and 20,000 Hertz. Also known as infrasonic therapy IST , low frequency sound is thought to travel through the body , directly stimulating your cells. Though you cannot actually hear these sounds, your body does receive the sound wavelengths and responds to them by healing areas that are affected...

(1/773) Midbrain combinatorial code for temporal and spectral information in concurrent acoustic signals.

All vocal species, including humans, often encounter simultaneous (concurrent) vocal signals from conspecifics. To segregate concurrent signals, the auditory system must extract information regarding the individual signals from their summed waveforms. During the breeding season, nesting male midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus) congregate in localized regions of the intertidal zone and produce long-duration (>1 min), multi-harmonic signals ("hums") during courtship of females. The hums of neighboring males often overlap, resulting in acoustic beats with amplitude and phase modulations at the difference frequencies (dFs) between their fundamental frequencies (F0s) and harmonic components. Behavioral studies also show that midshipman can localize a single hum-like tone when presented with a choice between two concurrent tones that originate from separate speakers. A previous study of the neural mechanisms underlying the segregation of concurrent signals demonstrated that midbrain neurons temporally encode a beat's dF through spike synchronization; however, spectral information about at least one of the beat's components is also required for signal segregation. Here we examine the encoding of spectral differences in beat signals by midbrain neurons. The results show that, although the spike rate responses of many neurons are sensitive to the spectral composition of a beat, virtually all midbrain units can encode information about differences in the spectral composition of beat stimuli via their interspike intervals (ISIs) with an equal distribution of ISI spectral sensitivity across the behaviorally relevant dFs. Together, temporal encoding in the midbrain of dF information through spike synchronization and of spectral information through ISI could permit the segregation of concurrent vocal signals.  (+info)

(2/773) Desynchronizing responses to correlated noise: A mechanism for binaural masking level differences at the inferior colliculus.

We examined the adequacy of decorrelation of the responses to dichotic noise as an explanation for the binaural masking level difference (BMLD). The responses of 48 low-frequency neurons in the inferior colliculus of anesthetized guinea pigs were recorded to binaurally presented noise with various degrees of interaural correlation and to interaurally correlated noise in the presence of 500-Hz tones in either zero or pi interaural phase. In response to fully correlated noise, neurons' responses were modulated with interaural delay, showing quasiperiodic noise delay functions (NDFs) with a central peak and side peaks, separated by intervals roughly equivalent to the period of the neuron's best frequency. For noise with zero interaural correlation (independent noises presented to each ear), neurons were insensitive to the interaural delay. Their NDFs were unmodulated, with the majority showing a level of activity approximately equal to the mean of the peaks and troughs of the NDF obtained with fully correlated noise. Partial decorrelation of the noise resulted in NDFs that were, in general, intermediate between the fully correlated and fully decorrelated noise. Presenting 500-Hz tones simultaneously with fully correlated noise also had the effect of demodulating the NDFs. In the case of tones with zero interaural phase, this demodulation appeared to be a saturation process, raising the discharge at all noise delays to that at the largest peak in the NDF. In the majority of neurons, presenting the tones in pi phase had a similar effect on the NDFs to decorrelating the noise; the response was demodulated toward the mean of the peaks and troughs of the NDF. Thus the effect of added tones on the responses of delay-sensitive inferior colliculus neurons to noise could be accounted for by a desynchronizing effect. This result is entirely consistent with cross-correlation models of the BMLD. However, in some neurons, the effects of an added tone on the NDF appeared more extreme than the effect of decorrelating the noise, suggesting the possibility of additional inhibitory influences.  (+info)

(3/773) Early visual experience shapes the representation of auditory space in the forebrain gaze fields of the barn owl.

Auditory spatial information is processed in parallel forebrain and midbrain pathways. Sensory experience early in life has been shown to exert a powerful influence on the representation of auditory space in the midbrain space-processing pathway. The goal of this study was to determine whether early experience also shapes the representation of auditory space in the forebrain. Owls were raised wearing prismatic spectacles that shifted the visual field in the horizontal plane. This manipulation altered the relationship between interaural time differences (ITDs), the principal cue used for azimuthal localization, and locations of auditory stimuli in the visual field. Extracellular recordings were used to characterize ITD tuning in the auditory archistriatum (AAr), a subdivision of the forebrain gaze fields, in normal and prism-reared owls. Prism rearing altered the representation of ITD in the AAr. In prism-reared owls, unit tuning for ITD was shifted in the adaptive direction, according to the direction of the optical displacement imposed by the spectacles. Changes in ITD tuning involved the acquisition of unit responses to adaptive ITD values and, to a lesser extent, the elimination of responses to nonadaptive (previously normal) ITD values. Shifts in ITD tuning in the AAr were similar to shifts in ITD tuning observed in the optic tectum of the same owls. This experience-based adjustment of binaural tuning in the AAr helps to maintain mutual registry between the forebrain and midbrain representations of auditory space and may help to ensure consistent behavioral responses to auditory stimuli.  (+info)

(4/773) Auditory perception: does practice make perfect?

Recent studies have shown that adult humans can learn to localize sounds relatively accurately when provided with altered localization cues. These experiments provide further evidence for experience-dependent plasticity in the mature brain.  (+info)

(5/773) Single cortical neurons serve both echolocation and passive sound localization.

The pallid bat uses passive listening at low frequencies to detect and locate terrestrial prey and reserves its high-frequency echolocation for general orientation. While hunting, this bat must attend to both streams of information. These streams are processed through two parallel, functionally specialized pathways that are segregated at the level of the inferior colliculus. This report describes functionally bimodal neurons in auditory cortex that receive converging input from these two pathways. Each brain stem pathway imposes its own suite of response properties on these cortical neurons. Consequently, the neurons are bimodally tuned to low and high frequencies, and respond selectively to both noise transients used in prey detection, and downward frequency modulation (FM) sweeps used in echolocation. A novel finding is that the monaural and binaural response properties of these neurons can change as a function of the sound presented. The majority of neurons appeared binaurally inhibited when presented with noise but monaural or binaurally facilitated when presented with the echolocation pulse. Consequently, their spatial sensitivity will change, depending on whether the bat is engaged in echolocation or passive listening. These results demonstrate that the response properties of single cortical neurons can change with behavioral context and suggest that they are capable of supporting more than one behavior.  (+info)

(6/773) Functional selection of adaptive auditory space map by GABAA-mediated inhibition.

The external nucleus of the inferior colliculus in the barn owl contains an auditory map of space that is based on the tuning of neurons for interaural differences in the timing of sound. In juvenile owls, this region of the brain can acquire alternative maps of interaural time difference as a result of abnormal experience. It has been found that, in an external nucleus that is expressing a learned, abnormal map, the circuitry underlying the normal map still exists but is functionally inactivated by inhibition mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors. This inactivation results from disproportionately strong inhibition of specific input channels to the network. Thus, experience-driven changes in patterns of inhibition, as well as adjustments in patterns of excitation, can contribute critically to adaptive plasticity in the central nervous system.  (+info)

(7/773) Sensitivity to simulated directional sound motion in the rat primary auditory cortex.

Sensitivity to simulated directional sound motion in the rat primary auditory cortex. This paper examines neuron responses in rat primary auditory cortex (AI) during sound stimulation of the two ears designed to simulate sound motion in the horizontal plane. The simulated sound motion was synthesized from mathematical equations that generated dynamic changes in interaural phase, intensity, and Doppler shifts at the two ears. The simulated sounds were based on moving sources in the right frontal horizontal quadrant. Stimuli consisted of three circumferential segments between 0 and 30 degrees, 30 and 60 degrees, and 60 and 90 degrees and four radial segments at 0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees. The constant velocity portion of each segment was 0.84 m long. The circumferential segments and center of the radial segments were calculated to simulate a distance of 2 m from the head. Each segment had two trajectories that simulated motion in both directions, and each trajectory was presented at two velocities. Young adult rats were anesthetized, the left primary auditory cortex was exposed, and microelectrode recordings were obtained from sound responsive cells in AI. All testing took place at a tonal frequency that most closely approximated the best frequency of the unit at a level 20 dB above the tuning curve threshold. The results were presented on polar plots that emphasized the two directions of simulated motion for each segment rather than the location of sound in space. The trajectory exhibiting a "maximum motion response" could be identified from these plots. "Neuron discharge profiles" within these trajectories were used to demonstrate neuron activity for the two motion directions. Cells were identified that clearly responded to simulated uni- or multidirectional sound motion (39%), that were sensitive to sound location only (19%), or that were sound driven but insensitive to our location or sound motion stimuli (42%). The results demonstrated the capacity of neurons in rat auditory cortex to selectively process dynamic stimulus conditions representing simulated motion on the horizontal plane. Our data further show that some cells were responsive to location along the horizontal plane but not sensitive to motion. Cells sensitive to motion, however, also responded best to the moving sound at a particular location within the trajectory. It would seem that the mechanisms underlying sensitivity to sound location as well as direction of motion converge on the same cell.  (+info)

(8/773) Influence of head position on the spatial representation of acoustic targets.

Sound localization in humans relies on binaural differences (azimuth cues) and monaural spectral shape information (elevation cues) and is therefore the result of a neural computational process. Despite the fact that these acoustic cues are referenced with respect to the head, accurate eye movements can be generated to sounds in complete darkness. This ability necessitates the use of eye position information. So far, however, sound localization has been investigated mainly with a fixed head position, usually straight ahead. Yet the auditory system may rely on head motor information to maintain a stable and spatially accurate representation of acoustic targets in the presence of head movements. We therefore studied the influence of changes in eye-head position on auditory-guided orienting behavior of human subjects. In the first experiment, we used a visual-auditory double-step paradigm. Subjects made saccadic gaze shifts in total darkness toward brief broadband sounds presented before an intervening eye-head movement that was evoked by an earlier visual target. The data show that the preceding displacements of both eye and head are fully accounted for, resulting in spatially accurate responses. This suggests that auditory target information may be transformed into a spatial (or body-centered) frame of reference. To further investigate this possibility, we exploited the unique property of the auditory system that sound elevation is extracted independently from pinna-related spectral cues. In the absence of such cues, accurate elevation detection is not possible, even when head movements are made. This is shown in a second experiment where pure tones were localized at a fixed elevation that depended on the tone frequency rather than on the actual target elevation, both under head-fixed and -free conditions. To test, in a third experiment, whether the perceived elevation of tones relies on a head- or space-fixed target representation, eye movements were elicited toward pure tones while subjects kept their head in different vertical positions. It appeared that each tone was localized at a fixed, frequency-dependent elevation in space that shifted to a limited extent with changes in head elevation. Hence information about head position is used under static conditions too. Interestingly, the influence of head position also depended on the tone frequency. Thus tone-evoked ocular saccades typically showed a partial compensation for changes in static head position, whereas noise-evoked eye-head saccades fully compensated for intervening changes in eye-head position. We propose that the auditory localization system combines the acoustic input with head-position information to encode targets in a spatial (or body-centered) frame of reference. In this way, accurate orienting responses may be programmed despite intervening eye-head movements. A conceptual model, based on the tonotopic organization of the auditory system, is presented that may account for our findings.  (+info)

I think the "psshht" sound of beer and soda cans sound different from each other.  Do you think so too?

Yes, they do. The beer can when opened should sound a little flatter than the soda can. The carbonation of the soda would place more inner pressure on the can, causing it to release more rapidly when opened.

Is an ultra sound the only way to predict baby's weight and does every doctor do them?

I am 31weeks 3days and I start my every 2 week appointments tomorrow. I was just wondering is an ultra sound the only way to predict the baby's weight and does every doctor do them to predict it?
----------

My doctor makes pretty good accurate estimates just by feeling the baby. She estimated my first baby to be about 7 lbs a few days before delivery and she was born 6 lbs 13.5 oz. She estimated my second baby to be about 9 lbs and she was born about 14 hours later weighing 8 lbs 14 oz. She's pretty good at it! If you are measuring large your doctor may order an ultrasound or if you are having any problems but just to check size I would think most doctor's would not order an ultrasound. I had several ultrasounds with my first two pregnancies because of difficulties with the pregnancy or the baby. With my first I had high blood pressure and they did an ultrasound every week from 36 to 38 weeks (when I delivered). With my second pregnancy it was determined at my 20 week ultrasound that my daughter had an enlarged kidney so I had to have an ultrasound every 2-3 weeks to keep an eye on it, so I had many, many ultrasounds! With my current pregnancy I have not had an ultrasound since my 20 week ultrasound and as of now nothing is scheduled, even though my baby is measuring ahead by a few weeks. I guess it all depends on the doctor and their particular practice! Good luck!

* I just wanted to add that ultrasounds are not very good at determining baby's weight late in the third trimester! A friend of mine had an ultrasound at 38 weeks and was told the baby was about 5 lbs. She went out and bought all kinds of preemie clothes and preemie diapers and her daughter was born at 39 weeks, 5 days at 10 lbs 11 oz! That was waaaaayyyy off! LOL!

What causes the cracking sound in our bones? Is it good or bad cracking bones?

I like to crack my knuckles and neck, and if possible my back, especially when I am tired! Cracking bones makes me feel sooooo good. But what causes the sound? Is it bad to crack our bones?
----------

The sound is caused by gases that are being releases from the fluid that is in between joints. This gas builds up bubbles which are released when you crack your knuckles or other bones. This is not harmful as long as you don't overly crack them. However there is some controversy that says it can cause soft tissue damage and make the joint weak but this is only if the joint is cracked too much all of the time. If it causes pain then you shouldn't crack the bone any more, and if not then it is probably fine.
