... 'Eastern philosophy in clinical psychology' refers to the influence of Eastern philosophies on the practice of clinical psychology based on the idea that East and West are false dichotomies. Karen Horney studied Zen-Buddhism. 78 states that Karen Horney "was intensely interested in Zen Buddhism during the last years of her life." Also see DeMartino 1991. Erich Fromm collaborated with D. ... Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry: A Closer Look. Psychiatric medications, science, marketing, psychiatry in general, and occasionally clinical psychology. Tuesday, March 13, 2007. Bipolar in Kids: Diagnosis Extension Program. BP-NOS: In the February 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a study where the demon of bipolar disorder not otherwise specified bipolar NOS rears its ugly head. Some combination of the behaviors listed above generally occur for four to six hours at a time, except that his sleep is poor at times for a couple days at a time. If Kids Have Bipolar Disorder: Of course, the upshot to a bipolar diagnosis is that it requires treatment, so should we really be breaking out Zyprexa, Depakote, or Risperdal for Johnny. Do Kids Have Bipolar Disorder. It is this kind of diagnosis-extension program that leads many people to claim that psychiatry cares more about expanding market share than anything else. ... Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry: A Closer Look. Psychiatric medications, science, marketing, psychiatry in general, and occasionally clinical psychology. Conflicts, Bad Science, and Corlux: Part Two. Schatzberg is deeply involved with Corcept Therapeutics, a company that has repeatedly found that mifepristone Corlux/RU-486 is a dud for psychotic depression. Bernard Carroll has the next chapter in this interesting saga, dealing particularly with Stanford University's claim that Schatzberg was not involved in "managing or conducting any human subjects research" using Corlux. Carroll, however, notes that it seems very likely Schatzberg was indeed involved in Corlux research. Schatzberg had a key role in Stanford s clinical trials of Corcept s drug reported in 2001, 2002, and 2006. Labels: conflict of interest, Corlux, mifepristone. Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry: A Closer Look: Whose Gold Standard. Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry: A Closer Look. Psychiatric medications, science, marketing, psychiatry in general, and occasionally clinical psychology. Whose Gold Standard. Decision Resources has recently claimed that Zyprexa will remain the gold standard for schizophrenia treatment. Philip Dawdy found such a finding rather odd, as neither he nor many others including myself had ever found Zyprexa to be the most supported schizophrenia treatment. In addition, the same consulting firm has also claimed that Seroquel will become the gold standard for treating bipolar depression by 2010. It would appear that Decision Resources likes to bandy about the term gold standard quite a bit in their reports. In fact, look what happens when you combine gold standard with Decision Resources click here. I just find it odd when a company keeps churning out reports labeling various treatments as being the gold standard in the ...

Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry: A Closer Look: How Are Kids Diagnosed. Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry: A Closer Look. Psychiatric medications, science, marketing, psychiatry in general, and occasionally clinical psychology. Wednesday, March 28, 2007. How Are Kids Diagnosed. With the latest rage of bipolar disorder becoming the "hip" diagnosis for kids across some parts of the country, Philip Dawdy asks some excellent questions, both about Rebecca Riley and kids in general. If these same symptoms are not expressed at school, then maybe the controlled environment, positive peer interactions, relationship with the teacher, teacher's strong classroom management skills or whataver are helping Junior keep a lid on the problem behaviors at school. So if the kid can keep it together at school but not at home, is this the kid's problem or the parent's problem. There will always be bad apples who fabricate symptoms in their kids. Bad peers can lead a reasonably good kid down a pretty bad ...

(1/3) American Cancer Society Award lecture. Psychological care of patients: psycho-oncology's contribution.

The centuries-old stigma attached to cancer precluded patients' being told their diagnoses, and thus, delayed any exploration of how they dealt with their illness. This situation changed in the United States in the 1970s when patients began to be told their cancer diagnosis, permitting the first formal study of the psychological impact of cancer. However, a second and equally long-held stigma attached to mental illness has been another barrier and this has kept patients from being willing to acknowledge their psychological problems and to seek counseling. This "double stigma" has slowed the development of psycho-oncology. However, we began to see rapid changes occurring in the last quarter of the 20th century. Valid assessment instruments were developed which were used in well-designed studies. Data from these studies and clinical observations led to increased recognition that psychosocial services are needed by many patients and provide significant assistance in coping with illness. Psycho-oncology has two dimensions: first, the study of the psychological reaction of patients at all stages of the disease, as well as of the family and oncology staff; second, exploring the psychological, social, and behavioral factors that impact on cancer risk and survival. Psycho-oncology now has a recognized role within the oncologic community through clinical care, research, and training as it relates to prevention of cancer through lifestyle changes, evaluation of quality of life, symptom control, palliative care and survivorship. Presently, there are sufficient research studies from which standards of care have been established. Both evidence and consensus-based clinical practice guidelines have been promulgated. It now possible to monitor the quality of existing psychosocial services by using these benchmarks of quality that have evolved in recent years.  (+info)

(3/3) General practitioner referral rates to district psychiatry and psychology services.

The number of referrals made to a district psychiatry service by each of the local general practitioners over a five year period was counted and a large variation in general practitioner referral rate was found. Ten referral letters from each of the general practitioners were independently assessed for the amount of detail included and a mean score for each general practitioner obtained. A significant negative correlation was found between referral rate and amount of detail in referral letters, that is low referrers wrote very detailed letters. The procedure was repeated over an 18 month period including referrals to the district psychology service. Referral rate to the psychologists was positively correlated with detailed referral letters, that is those who referred many patients to the psychologists wrote detailed letters. This study has indicated a wide variation in the use of the psychiatry and psychology services by general practitioners which cannot be explained solely on the basis of a general referral tendency. It is likely that constructive liaison between psychiatrists and general practitioners, especially those who refer a large number of patients, could enhance the care of patients with psychiatric disorder in general practice.  (+info)

How is medical marijuana working out in the states that have legalized it?

  • I'm doing a speech for school about medical marijuana. I know it's legal in several states. What I don't know is how well these programs are working out. I'm hoping to find the most successful examples of medical marijuana use. My goal is to find the best way to implement such a program in my state, Arkansas, where it is illegal to use marijuana for any reason. I'd like to hear about problems that have come up and what was done to correct them. I am a member of a group of 5 people doing the speech, which is pro legalization of medical marijuana. My portion is 'visualization', where I must speak for about 5 minutes about what it would be like if medical marijuana use were legalized in Arkansas.
  • The state that is probably the most advanced in this area is California. There are several cities and other localities in California that have more or less officially sanctioned medical marijuana and allow "compassion clubs" to operate. These are dispensaries that sell or give marijuana to people who have the proper permits. There have been some reported problems with these clubs. One is that they are sometimes not well-received by the local officials who are using any kind of excuse they can think of to shut them down. In many cases, they get the DEA to raid the places. In other places, such as the Oaksterdam area of Oakland, the facilities receive the support of the local community and were a large part of the reason that a former "war zone" area of Oakland has experienced a rebirth. See http://www.oaksterdamnews.com/ for more info on that. Local officials in some places have lodged complaints against the places such as that they are selling to people who aren't apparently sick. The state law, of course, does not require that people be visibly sick and no one can be diagnosed with anything simply by seeing them on the street. There have also been complaints that the compassion clubs occasionally get robbed. This is the same as complaining about convenience stores because they get robbed -- it is not really the fault of the person getting robbed and the solution is not to punish the victims of robbery. Another complaint is that they bring undesireable elements to the area or that they patrons take their purchased marijuana and sell it on the street. While these kinds of things may occur in some places that are not well-run, they are by no means universal. It depends largely on the management and local regulation of the individual clubs. In the places where they are properly regulated and have the support of the local officials, these problems are not significant. A better question is why marijuana use should be punished at all -- regardless of whether it is for medical purposes or "personal use" (non-medical). Every major study of the subject in the past 100 years has concluded that the marijuana laws were the product of racism, ignorance, and nonsense, and that they should have been repealed long ago because they do more harm than good. You can find the full text of these studies at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/studies.htm You can find a good short history of how marijuana became illegal at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm

What are some medical fields that do not involve seeing too much blood?

  • I want to be in the medical field and I know being in the medical field means that I will see blood and such. But what other careers (other than pharmacist, physical therapist) are there that do not deal with too much blood?
  • Medical receptionist, medical transcription, insurance coder, least but not last, cafeteria work!

How do i obtain my medical records for when i was in a psychiatric hospital?

  • Im interested in reviewing my medical records for when i was in the hospital for reasons of my diagnoses, notes they kept of me, symptoms i showed my reactions to things, just everything from when i was in. I know i would have to call the hospital but would i have to go in person to sign for them? What exactly do i ask for? Someone told me in my other post about the same question, that psychiatric records are way different to try getting than a regular medical record. Is this true and if so, why?
  • You just need to call them and request a copy of your complete medical file (or records) while you were under the services of their facility. You might ask if you need to individually contact each physician that worked with you... Sometimes they require the request in writing, or they require that you come personally (with I.D.) to sign for your records, and don't be surprised if they ask you to pay for a copy of your records. Unfortunately, a lot of facilities and private practices request a fee for the release of your records. Good luck!

How soon after a medical abortion did you have your next period?

  • I had a medical abortion 6 weeks ago today. I still haven't had a normal period and there are no signs of it coming. I'm just curious about when it came back for most other women. I don't think I'm pregnant, so I'm not worried about that. I'd just like for my cycles to get back to normal so I can get on with my life. Thanks.
  • Wow, since no one has actually bothered to answer this question, I'm going to be the first (I really don't understand why people have to use this as a forum for their pro-life nonsense.) After my abortion, I had my first "period" about 2 weeks afterwards (although the nurses after the operation said it would be about 3-4 weeks before this would happen so I guess it's different for every woman.) I was later told that this wasn't a period but instead it was normal bleeding that occurs after the procedure. It hurts a LOT. Then about 5-6 weeks after that, my nomal period resumed. So you should be fine but if you're still worried, see a doctor. It's very unlikely that you could still be pregnant after a medical abortion as there is so little room for error but you never can be too careful. Or maybe it's the stress of the whole situation you've just been through that's preventing your period coming back.

Is there any doctors or medical institutions who can help me start a medical transcription company ?

  • I want to start 10 seater medical transcription company in india and i m looking for a break. I can provide the services at a very competitive cost (10 cents per line) and can produce 800 lines per seat per day.
  • Medical transcription is becoming a big trend in todays medical field. Especially with smaller MD offices. They do not have the staff to do this task. So usually, one would have several MD offices on contract to do their tanscriptions. Good money too. Local community colleges offer a course. In just a short time you could be certified. Check your local community college or look in the free ADs paper, like "thirty nickel", or "green sheet" there is usually ads in them that could help you. Good Luck David F

if i HAD a medical marijuana card can still i become a firefighter?

  • okay so im looking into getting a medical marijuana card and im a freshman in college right now. i want to later eventually, hopefully became a firefighter and i was just wondering if anyone knows if they would care if i had it. i wouldnt renew it, i was just planning on letting it expire after a year. thanks!
  • In order to get a medical marijuana card you must have a debilitating condition. Now if you have a debilitating medical condition, how can you possibly be in good enough shape to handle what is one of the most physically demanding jobs in the world? If you put this on your record you will exempt yourself from many employment opportunities. I use marijuana as a medicine. I don't need it to survive, but since I'm over 50, broke up from years in the Army and the oilfield, it's undeniable that I can receive "Palliative Relief" (as our state law defines it) with the use of marijuana, and I enjoy is effects. Look man, my heart goes out to you, but if you want a career in public service, do not do this. If you want to use marijuana socially, you must be discreet-I spent many years in the Army indulging from time to time. We're only a few years away from total legalization. Until then you've got to play the game. Be smart and KISS.

What does a medical license entitle a doctor to practice in Michigan?

  • What I'm looking for is: With a medical license, does that give a doctor free reign over any field and any practice? Does a person NEED to have a license in order to perform a surgery, etc...? Sources would be amazing :) This is for trail evidence in school and websites are being very vague.
  • In theory, a medical license gives someone legal permission to do just about anything he/she wants, medically. Kinda stupid, but true. In reality, this is, of course, is not the case. There are restraints, such as the terms of malpractice insurance, threats of a lawsuit, peer pressure, hospital privilege limitations, personal integrity and commons sense. Occasionally the restraints fail, and patients suffer the consequences. Usually, the only damage to the doctor is higher malpractice costs.

Is medical assitant a way to start in the medical field?

  • I was wondering if i made the right choice to start off in the medical field which is Medical Assistant. I heard from some people who had graduated from the program that it is hard to find a job.
  • What exactly do you want to do or be? To be a nurse, you would need more schooling. But being a medical assistant alone, is a wonderful job. You could become the Head Med. Assistant, which would mean more $$. Talk to the office manager. She might have some ideas for you. Be aware of working with a lot of women. Women ten to get pretty B****y! So stay out of gossiping and back-stabbing, and just do your job!! :)
