(1/593) An extensive literature review of the evaluation of HIV prevention programmes.

This paper draws out and distils three key themes that have emerged from a substantial bibliographical review of a range of HIV intervention programmes, implemented throughout the world between years 1987 and 1995. Specifically, the paper assesses (1) to what extent intervention programmes have been tailored to meet the requirements and needs of specific target groups; (2) to what extent intervention programmes are supported by social and psychological theory of attitudinal and behavioural change, and also to what extent the results and findings from the interventions have amended existing theory; and, finally, (3) the range of methodologies employed in evaluating intervention programmes and also to what extent behavioural measures have been used in examining a programme's effectiveness. In light of these themes, the paper presents and discusses the principal factors thought to contribute towards the effectiveness of HIV intervention programmes.  (+info)

(2/593) Physical exercise habit: on the conceptualization and formation of habitual health behaviours.

An observation one can make when reviewing the literature on physical activity is that health-enhancing exercise habits tend to wear off as soon as individuals enter adolescence. Therefore, exercise habits should be promoted and preserved early in life. This article focuses on the formation of physical exercise habits. First, the literature on motivational determinants of habitual exercise and related behaviours is discussed, and the concept of habit is further explored. Based on this literature, a theoretical model of exercise habit formation is proposed. More specifically, expanding on the idea that habits are the result of automated cognitive processes, it is argued that physical exercise habits are capable of being automatically activated by the situational features that normally precede these behaviours. These habits may enhance health as a result of consistent performance over a long period of time. Subsequently, obstacles to the formation of exercise habits are discussed and interventions that may anticipate these obstacles are presented. Finally, implications for theory and practice are briefly discussed.  (+info)

(3/593) Unemployment and foster home placements: estimating the net effect of provocation and inhibition.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought, first, to explain and reconcile the provocation and inhibition theories of the effect of rising unemployment on the incidence of antisocial behavior. Second, it tested the hypothesis, implied by the provocation and inhibition theories, that the relationship between unemployment and foster home placements forms an inverted "U." METHODS: The hypothesis was tested with data from California for 137 months beginning in February 1984. RESULTS: Findings showed that the hypothesis was supported. CONCLUSIONS: Rising joblessness increases the incidence of foster home placements among families that lose jobs or income. Levels of joblessness that threaten workers who remain employed, however, inhibit antisocial behavior and reduce the incidence of foster home placements. This means that accounting for the social costs of unemployment is more complicated than assumed under the provocation theory.  (+info)

Peer education has grown in popularity and practice in recent years in the field of health promotion. However, advocates of peer education rarely make reference to theories in their rationale for particular projects. In this paper the authors review a selection of commonly cited theories, and examine to what extent they have value and relevance to peer education in health promotion. Beginning from an identification of 10 claims made for peer education, each theory is examined in terms of the scope of the theory and evidence to support it in practice. The authors conclude that, whilst most theories have something to offer towards an explanation of why peer education might be effective, most theories are limited in scope and there is little empirical evidence in health promotion practice to support them. Peer education would seem to be a method in search of a theory rather than the application of theory to practice.  (+info)

Defensiveness in intrapsychic and interpersonal activities is a generally accepted concept among psychodynamic theorists, but a theoretically grounded classification of emotional control processes is needed. As a result of intensive case-by-case clinical and empirical studies, such a system was assembled. The system is organized by three major categories of processes that can regulate emotions. These are sets of mental operations that control 1) content of thought and communications, 2) form of thought and communications, and 3) person schemas that organize beliefs and interpersonal expressions. Each category of defensive control processes is linked to observable outcomes at intrapsychic and interpersonal levels. The authors elaborate psychodynamic factors that are relevant to the treatment of panic disorder. They outline psychoanalytic concepts that were employed to develop a psychodynamic approach to panic disorder, including the idea of unconscious mental life and the existence of defense mechanisms, compromise formations, the pleasure principle, and the transference. The authors then describe a panic-focused psychodynamic treatment based on a psychodynamic formulation of panic. Clinical techniques used in this approach, such as working with transference and working through, are described. Consumer health information studies in library and information science (LIS) are typically not grounded within a theoretical framework. This article explains the importance of theory to LIS research in general, and the specific value of using theories from other disciplines to study consumers' health information-seeking behavior. The argument is supported with two examples: Miller's psychological theory of blunting and monitoring behavior and Granovetter's sociological theory of the strength of weak ties. Staddon and Higa's (1999) trace-strength theory of timing and memory for event duration can account for pigeons' bias to "choose short" when retention intervals are introduced and to "choose long" when, following training with a fixed retention interval, retention intervals are shortened. However, it does not account for the failure of pigeons to choose short when the intertrial interval is distinct from the retention interval. That finding suggests that stimulus generalization (or ambiguity) between the intertrial interval and the retention interval may result in an effect that has been attributed to memory loss. Such artifacts must be eliminated before a theory of memory for event duration can be adequately tested.  (+info)

This one is easy, you have so many more hormones flowing through your body that weren't there a month or so ago, and it takes your body time to adjust.  Then you have the baby and all the hormones go away, leaving you with more problems.

Boy I sure have the easy part to pregnancy!


Why am I attracted to men that are taken?


For some reason, I tend to be more sexually attracted to men who are already involved with other women. I don't want to date them, it's just a strong sexual attraction. I know you don't know my personal life, but is there a general psychological theory that might explain why I (and some other women) are this way?

Please no, "because you're a slut" answers. I never pursue these men, I'm just really attracted to them.

There are theories,  about this, and most of them say that it is safer for you emotionally.  A practioner would look for abuse, lack of trust because of childhood difficulties, and perhaps an inability or fear of getting emotionally involved,  or a lack of knowledge in how to develope close, loving relationships.
Fantasies are safer also.


When raising kids do any parents read parenting books?


I know there are a lot of parenting books out there, child psychology books, baby and me, etc. I know there are psychological theories about the stages that a child goes through when growing up, and I am a firm believer of it. Do any parents agree? And the ones that do, do you find the books helpful? And the ones that don't, why? I talked to my mom, and she told me that she never read any of those books, and well I turned out just fine! I'm going to medical school and going to be a doctor soon.

I loved the what to expect series...What to Expect the First Year, and What to Expect the Toddler Years. They were really informative. I liked that they broke down child development month by month, so you really did know what to expect and what was the norm.

Also, I found the Happiest baby on the Block book helpful (taught me how to swaddle and soothe my newborn), and a book I read on infant sleep that I can't remember the name of (Healthy Sleep Habit...maybe?)

Of course no one book is going to TELL you how to parent your child, but I think people that don't read at all are really doing themselves a disservice. I am an avid reader to begin with, so I enjoy reading other case studies and having solid information to help me figure out what works and what doesn't and why.

You HAVE to take what you read and decipher what makes the most sense, not believe everything you read blindly. I think that is a no-brainer!!!

Why didn’t the Germ Theory develop earlier? Was the Greek teaching of “Humors” to blame?


The Greek theory that an imbalance of humors caused disease delayed investigation into other causes. Is there a record of anyone publicly doubting this theory and presenting new theories before the advent of the Germ Theory?

Well, it wasn't until Antonie van Leeuwenhoek used the the microscope that people even knew about germs, so it's not even applicable until at least the 1670s. But then, the Germ Theory didn't really take off until Louis Pasteur in the 1860s, which is 200 years after.

However, I'm not sure exactly why it took 200 years. You might look into the contemporary reactions to Ignaz Semmelweis, the Hungarian doctor who pioneered doctor handwashing to lower the incidents of fever in childbirths. Also, I think part of the problem was that though the germ theory of disease was more correct by its inception, it had a lot of problems with it in its early conception, so in that way doctors were in some ways justified in being a little resistant to it.


What are the alternative beliefs to the germ theory of disease?


There are some alternative medicine supporters who deny the germ theory of disease or at least claim that it is not the primary source of most illnesses. What do these practitioners believe is the cause of disease instead? What evidence do they have to support this. Just out of curiosity, what were the common beliefs about the cause of diseases before the germ theory was discovered, and how are they related to the modern alternative beliefs?
I'm not questioning the germ theory of disease. I'm just curious how germ theory deniers explain the existence of disease without the germ theory.

There is no evidence to support their "beliefs". Germ theory denialists refuse to accept the overwhelming scientific evidence supporting the germ theory. Note that these people are crazy;  they have no problem completely ditching biology. Just to get a general idea of the level of BS we are talking about:  Germ theory denialists make creationists look sane.

What are the psychological reasons behind men who fantasize of their wife being pleased sexually with other men? Lots of talk on risks of actualizing such fantasies it but I’ve not seen any answers that speak to the psychological reasons.

What are the mental repercussions/psychological effects of death on children?


I'm writing a paper on euthanasia. One point I make is that it helps end family suffering, and I want to make a comment on the mental repercussions/psychological effects of death in the family to children.

I know that there definitely are, I've witnessed my little brother go from bad to worse in the past six years since my grandfather passed away.

I just need to know if anyone is better at searching the internet for some sites that may have information along these lines?

Death brings up all our questions, and makes us look differently at life.  If you have not spoken to your bro about it all, then you should and get him some help.(therapy and someones to talk to)...dont let him go down hill.

Are there any psychological characters of type 1 diabetes?
So far  I have : Higher risk for eating disorders, depression, and dementia/

Even though type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, I guess quality of life could be decreased in some people who have it. A major diagnosis that is going to affect you for the rest of your life frequently causes depression - both at the time of diagnosis and throughout your life due to dealing with the constant monitoring and care that type 1 diabetes requires.
I recently read a nursing journal article that young females with type one diabetes are at higher risk for anorexia nervosa due to the strict adherence of a 'diabetic diet' and it discussed insulin omission with this. 

I haven't heard about the dementia one though - hope you're not right there!
