The 21st Century Librarian. Vestia Solutions. Records Information Management. 902.293.3347. About Services Events Blog Contact. The 21st Century Librarian. Published April 30, 2013. Records Management RM is distinct from librarianship. Each field involves different skill sets, though there is much overlap between the two. Deep understanding of metadata, taxonomies and classification is fundamental to librarianship, and also foundational to a successful RM program. Before launching Vestia Solutions, we asked ourselves how librarians are perceived in the private sector. We delivered this question to most of the private sector professionals that we had the pleasure to meet with. To our surprise, most responses were quite positive, and sometimes flattering. Nevertheless, librarianship is not as fully understood as we d like it to be. Let s shed a little ...

... Your Neighborhood Librarian. just suck on ice cubes in 4/4 time if you're too cool to clap. Wednesday, November 08, 2006. Nine sisters-in-law. Nice shoes, girls. Now this is only six of 'em, the six that are Bob's actual sisters. Bottom step: Janie, public radio engineer 2nd step: Mary, pediatrician; Bob, public schools executive; Anne, teacher ret. 3rd step: Joe, practicing puppeteer; Therese, force of nature; Nancy, industrial designer at Fisher-Price and source of much xmas joy 4th step: Paul, the father-in-law I never met; Patsy with Ranger, cook and brain; Frances, everyone's mom; and Jim, who works for the diocese counseling kids and playing guitar. This was 1971, Paul and Frances' 25th wedding anniversary. You might think this would be a lot to marry into, and it is, really, it is. I love the noise though, and the music and laughter of this family. I'd give a lot for Mary's platform slingbacks in this picture. Ever since Frances's health began to decline a few years ago they've been going through ...

‘Predatory Reference’ an Interview with Bill Pardue about ‘Slam the Boards.’ Second Slam Coming Up on October 10, 2007. Marie L. Bill Pardue is the Virtual Services Librarian at the Arlington Heights IL Memorial Library. Bill initiated “Slam the Boards”. To get us started, tell me about “Slam the Boards” and especially how the idea occurred to you. Answers on my own and realized that it might be an opportunity for librarians to interact with users who don’t even realize that libraries have reference services. What were you hoping to achieve with “Slam the Boards”. On the asker/patron side, I’d just like a few answer board users to be pleasantly surprised that librarians don’t only provide people with books and videos, but also provide reference service. It just won’t happen, and people get some very good answers there. Marie: So, did Slam the Boards achieve what you had imagined. Bill: I think it did, partly because it had such a simple goal…get librarians involved, ...

Swiss Army Librarian condoms :: Brian Herzog. Swiss Army Librarian or, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Fear and Loathing at a Public Library Reference Desk. Sex…@ your library January 25th, 2007 Brian Herzog. So, I'm making my rounds just before we close last night, and what do I find. A condom and wrapper. Hooray. I know it's a fetish of sorts, and I've heard of libraries having trouble with patron fornication. Even another library I worked in had incidents before I was there. But this is the first time I've come face to face with it, so to speak. I talked to some of the other staff about it today, and we all agreed that yes, the place where the condom was found is a very secluded, blind corner, and yes, we need to address this. One of the other librarians asked if I could show her exactly where I found it, and when I took her back there - guess what we found. Another condom. Luckily, thankfully, although both were opened, neither were used although we didn't look too close. It could possibly be just kids ...

Peach Upside-Down and Empty Cake Tuesday, August 7, 2007. I Heart my KitchenAid mixer. Tonight, I tried to make the Fresh Fruit Upside-Down Cake from Baking Illustrated page 332. Oh, sooo close... This recipe calls for cooking some butter and brown sugar in a small saucepan to create a light caramel. That goes into a 9 x 3 pan and then the fresh fruit is placed on top. I used white and yellow peaches. I went to Surfas this weekend to pick up the special 9 x 3 pan - most pans are 9 x 2. The cake batter is created by mixing butter, flour, sugar, egg yolks and a bit of cornmeal. You also beat egg whites to stiff peaks and fold them into the mix. Now, I know I have praised my new digital scale and other new toys, but I sometimes forget to mention my very close and special friend, the KitchenAid mixer. It simply rocks. It beats, whips, blends, kneads, ...

You re pretty big, so you might have a chance. From the offered opinions you would have thought I was working with the Berserkers from Clive Barker s Cabal. Cabal was later made into the movie Nightbreed, which was actually a pretty good translation of the book. Young Adults can be trying, but in the end it is both a joy and fulfilling to work with them. Monday, November 07, 2011 Movember - is it a Commonwealth thing. At the end of October this year a friend of mine posted that his doctor had found a tumor during a checkup of his manly parts. This timing was such that I decided I'd get involved in the Movember movement this year. Over the past few days I noticed something really odd. Canada is leading the amount raised by a large margin. Know where the US is, with it's 10-times the population. 4th. Behind Canada, the UK, and Australia. It's not as though the US has a lower incidence of prostate cancer or other men's health issues than any of those other three countries. I know the economy's in the pits, but it's can't be that bad, can it. According to Wikipedia, while the Movember movement did begin in Australia, it expanded to Canada and the ...

In 2002 I trained for and ran the Chicago Marathon. And although some find that wording pretentious, I always say I trained for and ran a marathon because the training was the bigger challenge by far. I am eternally indebted to the excellent trainers and mentors I encountered through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society s Team in Training program. They told me not to be intimidated when the faster runners passed me by, reminded me to keep my gloves on even when I had shed most of my other layers, and they encouraged me to leave something on the course at the place where I realized I would in fact finish the race. Another bit of wisdom they drilled into me was that if I felt I was unraveling, it was probably time to lengthen my stride. This was counterintuitive: it essentially meant to slow down so I could speed up, or at least that s how ...

... Monday, January 17, 2011. L.K. Madigan and her struggle. Last week, YA author L.K. Madigan posted very, very sad news in her Livejournal. She was recently diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. L.K. Madigan is the author of two YA stories neither of which I have read sadly Flash Burnout on my TBR pile and The Mermaid's Mirror. You can read her entire poignant entry and well, if you're like me, it's probably going to make you tear up a bit. Cancer is such a difficult, difficult disease so I hope you will join me in donating to The American Cancer Society in Madigan's name. I cannot think of one person in my life who hasn't been touched by cancer in some way, through someone they know and love or from themselves, so please consider giving. The class of 2009 YA debutantes are doing a special giveaway in honor of L.K. Madigan so I urge you to go and enter and spread the word about her books. I'm also giving away an E-copy of L.K. Madigan's most recent release, The Mermaid's Mirror. Either Kindle or Nook ...

Lemon Squeezer and other friendly tools Sunday, February 24, 2008. I think I'm in love with another kitchen product. Again. This time, it is my new lemon squeezer. Damn, it is great. I've seen them in the store for years. And I always thought it was a gimmick. Sorta like 50% of Bed, Bath and Beyond's inventory. Really, do you need a "soda can holder" for the refrigerator. But I was so wrong. This lemon squeezer is my new best friend. Seriously. It is heavy, but not too heavy. I thought it would be an ergonomic trap - leading me directly from the kitchen to the hand-therapist in 10 seconds. But, no. It is so much easier to use than a standard manual juicer...and it drains the lemon of all their juice. The lemon squeezer. It's a good thing. And I'm sorry I mocked you. I just finished reading A Haystack Full of Needles  by Jim Hornthal. This work is a TedBooks venture and is pretty short about 80 pages on my iPad . It offers some great, concrete examples of current discovery and how it helps everyone, from travelers to music lovers, find exactly the information that they need. Here is a brief summary from the website:. Discovery is something being explored by libraries and librarians more and more these days. This Library Journal article  from March 15, 2011 discusses how discovery services can help increase the usage and “findability” of resources, enabling people to get the information they want without having to wade through the information glut that exists in just plain Google or catalog searching. 34 discusses discovery services as well. (1/169) The evolving role of the librarian in evidence-based medicine.

Librarians' participation in evidence-based medicine (EBM) is rooted in past practices, most notably in clinical medical librarianship. EBM extends the librarians' role beyond identification of the literature to involvement in practicing and teaching quality filtering and critical appraisal of the literature. These activities require librarians to acquire new knowledge and develop new skills. A professional development program for librarians at the Library of the Health Sciences (LHS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is described. The program's goals are to increase librarians' skills and support the EBM curricular initiative at the UIC College of Medicine (COM). The unique program has been a collaborative effort of the LHS and the COM. The locally developed classes provide librarians with instruction in clinical study designs, statistical concepts, and critical appraisal of the literature. Other interventions such as an EBM round table are also described. The programs' success is measured by librarians' growing involvement in EBM medical curricula, journal clubs, and morning reports. Additionally, librarians gained competence in new skills and professional satisfaction from working collegially with COM students, residents, and faculty.  (+info)

(2/169) Web-based distance continuing education: a new way of thinking for students and instructors.

As people have more difficulty taking time away from work to attend conferences and workshops, the idea of offering courses via the Web has become more desirable. Addressing a need voiced by Medical Library Association membership, the authors developed a Web-based continuing-education course on the subject of the librarian's role in evidence-based medicine. The aim of the course was to provide medical librarians with a well-constructed, content-rich learning experience available to them at their convenience via the Web. This paper includes a discussion of the considerations that need to be taken into account when developing Web-based courses, the issues that arise when the information delivery changes from face-to-face to online, the changing role of the instructor, and the pros and cons of offering Web-based versus traditional courses. The results of the beta test and future plans for the course are also discussed.  (+info)

(3/169) Expediting the transfer of evidence into practice: building clinical partnerships.

A librarian/clinician partnership was fostered in one hospital through the formation of the Evidence-based Practice Committee, with an ulterior goal of facilitating the transfer of evidence into practice. The paper will describe barriers to evidence-based practice and outline the committee's strategies for overcoming these barriers, including the development and promotion of a Web-based guide to evidence-based practice specifically designed for clinicians (health professionals). Educational strategies for use of the Web-based guide will also be addressed. Advantages of this partnership are that the skills of librarians in meeting the needs of clinicians are maximized. The evidence-based practice skills of clinicians are honed and librarians make a valuable contribution to the knowledge-base of the clinical staff. The knowledge acquired through the partnership by both clinicians and librarians will increase the sophistication of the dialogue between the two groups and in turn will expedite the transfer of evidence into practice.  (+info)

(4/169) Republican Scientific-Medical Library, The Republic of Armenia: progress and programs.

In 1990, the Republican Scientific-Medical Library (RSML) of the Ministry of Health of Armenia in collaboration with the Fund for Armenian Relief created a vision of a national library network supported by information technology. This vision incorporated four goals: (1) to develop a national resource collection of biomedical literature accessible to all health professionals, (2) to develop a national network for access to bibliographic information, (3) to develop a systematic mechanism for sharing resources, and (4) to develop a national network of health sciences libraries. During the last decade, the RSML has achieved significant progress toward all four goals and has realized its vision of becoming a fully functional national library. The RSML now provides access to the literature of the health sciences including access to the Armenian medical literature, provides education and training to health professionals and health sciences librarians, and manages a national network of libraries of the major health care institutions in Armenia. The RSML is now able to provide rapid access to the biomedical literature and train health professionals and health sciences librarians in Armenia in information system use. This paper describes the evolution of the RSML and how it was accomplished.  (+info)

(5/169) Study to assess the compensation and skills of medical library professionals relative to information technology professionals.

PURPOSE: The study seeks to determine how medical library professionals performing information-technology (IT) roles are compensated and how their positions are designed compared to information technology staff in their institutions. METHODS: 550 medical library directors in hospital and academic medical libraries were surveyed. The data was then compared to survey data from other compensation studies of the IT industry. RESULTS: There is a gap in compensation between medical library professionals and IT professionals performing similar functions using information technology. Technology-intense library jobs are compensated at higher levels than more traditional jobs. CONCLUSIONS: To compete with IT salaries, managers of medical library professionals will need to be ever more cognizant of the employment practices of IT professionals in nonmedical library disciplines. It is typically in the medical library's best interest to ensure that IT-related jobs, accountabilities, and capabilities of the medical library are known and understood by others, especially in the human resources and information technology staff departments.  (+info)

(6/169) Web-based Loansome Doc, librarians, and end users: results from a survey of the Southeast Region.

OBJECTIVES: The study examines how Loansome Doc services are implemented and used by libraries in the Southeast Region and describe end users' experiences with and attitudes toward Loansome Doc. METHODS: 251 active DOCLINE libraries and 867 Loansome Doc users were surveyed. RESULTS: Roughly one half of the libraries offered Loansome Doc services. Of those that did not, most indicated no plans to offer it in the future. The majority had a small number of end users and experienced minimal increases in interlibrary loan activity. Problems were relatively rare. Satisfaction with Loansome Doc was high among all types of libraries. End users were usually physicians or other health care professionals who requested articles for research and patient care. Most learned about Loansome Doc through PubMed or Internet Grateful Med. End users appeared to be largely self-taught or received informal instruction in Loansome Doc. Loansome Doc filled document requests in a timely manner, and end users reported being satisfied with the service. CONCLUSIONS: Greater promotion of what Loansome Doc is and how it can benefit libraries can increase the number of participating libraries. While satisfaction of Loansome Doc end users is high, satisfaction could be increased with more help on the PubMed screen, more library training, and faster delivery methods.  (+info)

(7/169) Health sciences libraries in Kuwait: a study of their resources, facilities, and services.

The purpose of this study was to examine the current status of health sciences libraries in Kuwait in terms of their staff, collections, facilities, use of information technology, information services, and cooperation. Seventeen libraries participated in the study. Results show that the majority of health sciences libraries were established during the 1980s. Their collections are relatively small. The majority of their staff is nonprofessional. The majority of libraries provide only basic information services. Cooperation among libraries is limited. Survey results also indicate that a significant number of health sciences libraries are not automated. Some recommendations for the improvement of existing resources, facilities, and services are made.  (+info)

(8/169) Bringing the best of medical librarianship to the patient team.

This article introduces a series of articles examining the state of the medical library profession as practiced in the clinical context. It is widely understood that many changes across the spectrum of medical librarianship practice have been brought about by both technological advances and economic realities. These changes have created strains felt by many in the profession. Discussions of evolving roles for medical librarians that have gone on for years have taken on a new sense of urgency, not just because support of library services is at stake, but also because new opportunities, which many are eager to explore, await librarians. In June 2000, an editorial appearing in a mainstream medical journal proposed a reinvention of clinical librarianship that, if designed as presented in the editorial, would have a dramatic effect on current hospital-based library practice. This series of articles was developed in an effort to provide thoughtful consideration of the "informationist" model and to present new ways to look at the core competencies that define the profession.  (+info)

isn't it kind of sad to see libraries going all digital and laying off librarians?

  • They already had to lay off the librarians in our county and now they are getting rid if books, replacing them with nooks to cut cost. While it is neat what technology can do, it is kind of sad not being able to physically search for a book. Are they ridding libraries of librarians in your school district or public library and replacing them with technology?
  • No currently our Library is going strong. If they were to try and do away with the BOOKS in our library I would be one of those who would stand up for the actual BOOKS. .

Why do librarians think they are intelligent?

  • Whenever i am in the library the librarians give me dirty looks. Just because they stack books on shelves all day why do they think they are so clever ? Anyone can stack books on shelves. It is the same as stacking shelves in a supermarket. Half of them probably can't even read.
  • I work in a University library, but I'm not a librarian, I'm a library assistant. Most of the qualified librarians (which do require two degrees) are working behind the scenes doing tasks that not many people could do. I know I couldn't. I have a bachelor's degree and you basically must have a degree to work in a library due to the high level of competition for the job. So you can assume that all people you encounter in a library have a degree. The reasons why the people you encounter are rude is one of two options 1. That person is a complete a**hole and it has nothing to do with working in a library, they would be an a**hole no matter where they work. 2. They are tired and stressed from dealing with the public, most of which are pleasant and grateful for the help they receive, but some of whom are demanding, rude, aggressive and leave you feeling drained and attacked. I feel like that quite often. Using your brain all day everyday is draining anyway, trying to do that while being badgered and abused is even harder. I am going to bed now, I need my energy to deal with the hordes tomorrow. It can be a rewarding job helping people but there are bound to be some people that are oblivious to the fact that they are dealing with a real human being and not a robot punchbag. Thanks for listening.

Can Librarians show their tattoos at work?

  • I want to be a librarian. Would I have to covor up my tattoos while I work?
  • Tattoos are generally fine, a bad attitude towards one group of people or another is not. I don't believe having a tattoo is a "protected class" so in your interview you might be asked how would you respond to an elderly man who disapproves of your tattoo, and if you responded that you would tell him to drop dead, then you wouldn't get the job,...obviously. People without tattoos aren't asked that question, again obviously, and interviewers in some locations MUST ask each interviewee the same questions, so they wouldn't be able to ask you about your tattoos which could work against you because a potential employer needs to know how you would respond to criticism. This is something that sounds pretty obvious as opposed to a flower on your ankle. If I were you, if there was a question that asked you how you would handle an abusive patron - there often is at least one - then have a canned response ready that would include your tattoo example. Beyond that, libraries, like many other institutions competing for attention and business, want to make a positive impression. For some, that would be attained by hiring someone with tattoos, for others it would be by hiring people in a suit. Unlike my regular advice, which is "Try to look as professional as you can." for you I would advise to try to look nice, but casual and with lots of energy because you'll be a niche employee, filling a role that us old folks can't fill.

Why are librarians always cranky?

  • Seriously, they are always cranky, but why?
  • Ah god, I started laughing when I read this, I have a librarian at my local library who is a total sex-pot, haha. She always wears these extremely low cut shirts and she flirts with every guy in sight. She dresses like she was a waitress at Hooters for god sakes. My library excursions just became a lot more enjoyable since she showed up on the scene haha....and yes, she is young and all the other older librarians hate her.

Do you buy your childrens' librarian a holiday gift?

  • We participate in several childrens progams at our local library every week and I am contemplating getting them some sort of Christmas/Holiday gift. They are really a wonderful set of librarians and my son loves them to pieces. Do you buy a gift for your librarian? We're pretty poor at the moment, any suggestions for what would make a thoughtful yet inexpensive gift/gesture? The problem with a gift card is that there are 5 different librarians that are responsible for the childrens programs, and can't really afford to get one for each of them.
  • I *love* the idea of donating a children's book in their name. I also like the idea of giving a small plate of goodies for everyone to enjoy -- cookies, peanut brittle, etc. Even having your child(ren) write a thank you note to the library would be a thoughtful (and free) gesture that would be much appreciated. One cute and simple idea that we're doing this year for all teachers (including gym/music/art teachers, aides, etc.) is to put some Hershey kisses in the bottom of a whisk, wrap it in a plastic baggie (so the kisses don't fall out), and tie a note on that reads... We "whisk" you a merry Kiss-mas! My daughter already passed out a few of them at school, and the teachers thought they were really cute. (One teacher said she's going to use the idea herself for her own child's teachers.) It's a way of showing your appreciation on a low budget, and it's lots of fun! I love that you're thinking of the librarians!

What is up with those ugly librarian glasses women are wearing these days?

  • Every male acquaintance and friend I have spoken to have agreed that these librarian glasses are ridiculous and are detrimental to anyones looks. Not one male I have spoken to find these to be attractive so why wear them unless you are a librarian or are reading a book.
  • That is a matter of opinion. I know of many guys who find those glasses attractive. Women find them attractive as well, otherwise we wouldn't wear them. Perhaps one of the reasons they're so popular is because of the popularity of Tina Fey and Sarah Palin. Surely you don't think Tina Fey is unattractive?

What is it about libraries that make little kids and babies start crying and screaming?

  • And how come librarians seem to be deaf to the racket -- and unable to see the babies pounding the daylights out of fragile keyboards? Our library does have a nursery with PCs, but the librarians apparently are reluctant to mention it.
  • An employee in a librarian wouldn't interfere with a strangers child no matter what the racket is. It's just a downside you'll have to face. Plug in some earphones and listen to some slow paced music. I find it easier to concentrate when I listen to deadmau5's songs or even classical music.
