... December 8, 2011 By John Unguris in Physics / General Physics. PhysOrg.com -- An international collaboration led by the NIST Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology has used scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis SEMPA to acquire images of the magnetic structure inside patterned nickel-palladium NiPd thin film nanostructures, revealing peculiar magnetization textures that can affect the behavior of these ferromagnetic alloys in experimental applications. NiPd alloys are used for studying how ferromagnets affect nearby superconductors. They are also good electron spin injectors and spin analyzers being applied to the development of carbon nanotube-based electronics using electron spin spintronics. The magnetic orientation of nano-patterned NiPd thin film contacts was expected to be simple, controlled primarily by the shape of the patterned film and the applied magnetic field. The SEMPA measurements, along with magnetic force microscopy and spin-polarized photoemission electron microsc...

It is often abbreviated as 'IU' in English; as 'UI' in Romance languages for example, Spanish 'unidad internacional', French 'unité internationale', Italian 'unità internazionale', Romanian 'unitate internațională' ; as 'IE' in several Germanic languages for example, German 'Internationale Einheit', Dutch 'internationale eenheid' ; or as other forms for example, Russian 'МЕ', Международная единица ' ', Hungarian 'NE', 'Nemzetközi Egység'. 1 Many biological agents exist in different forms or preparations e.g. The goal of the IU is to be able to compare these, so that different forms or preparations with the same biological effect will contain the same number of IUs. To do so, the WHO Expert Committee on Biological Standardization provides a reference preparation of the agent, arbitrarily sets the number of IUs contained in that preparation, and specifies a biological procedure to compare other preparations of the same agent to the reference preparation. Since the number of IUs contained in a new substance is a...

Work to date had identified six areas that provided fertile ground for future considerations: the intersessional process; the confidence-building measures; science and technology; the Implementation Support Unit; international cooperation and assistance; and compliance and verification. Participants also drew attention to aspects of past intersessional processes that might need to be re-examined, including: possible overlaps and repetitions between Meetings of Experts and Meeting of States Parties; opportunities to continue discussions between meetings, especially through the use of modern information technology; and avoiding too much of a health security focus that would detract from the core security function of BWC. The discussions identified a number of possible topics for future attention, including: improving the CBMs and further transparency measures; broader compliance issues and declarations; implementing and coordination measures for Article X, including building disease surveillance and response ca...

Thanks to the United States Global Leadership Council for hosting us this morning. Next week, leaders from around the world will gather in Germany to advance goals shared by people of every nation: economic empowerment, education, and good health. The eagerness of children to learn, the desire of individuals to provide for themselves and their families, and the longing of mothers to see their babies grow up healthy are universal. Yet poverty, a lack of education, and disease have kept millions from around the world from fulfilling these fundamental desires. Today the governments and citizens of many countries are working to overcome these crises. And the American people are proud to stand with them. T...

(1/2447) A comparative analysis of surveyors from six hospital accreditation programmes and a consideration of the related management issues.

PURPOSE: To gather data on how accreditors manage surveyors, to compare these data and to offer them to the accreditors for improvement and to the scientific community for knowledge of the accreditation process and reinforcement of the credibility of these processes. DATA SOURCE: The data were gathered with the aid of a questionnaire sent to all accreditors participating in the study. RESULTS: An important finding in this comparative study is the different contractual relationships that exist between the accreditors and their surveyors. CONCLUSION: Surveyors around the world share many common features in terms of careers, training, work history and expectations. These similarities probably arise from the objectives of the accreditors who try to provide a developmental process to their clients rather than an 'inspection'.  (+info)

(2/2447) Eradication: lessons from the past.

The declaration in 1980 that smallpox had been eradicated reawakened interest in disease eradication as a public health strategy. The smallpox programme's success derived, in part, from lessons learned from the preceding costly failure of the malaria eradication campaign. In turn, the smallpox programme offered important lessons with respect to other prospective disease control programmes, and these have been effectively applied in the two current global eradication initiatives, those against poliomyelitis and dracunculiasis. Taking this theme a step further, there are those who would now focus on the development of an inventory of diseases which might, one by one, be targeted either for eradication or elimination. This approach, while interesting, fails to recognize many of the important lessons learned and their broad implications for contemporary disease control programmes worldwide.  (+info)

(3/2447) Candidate parasitic diseases.

This paper discusses five parasitic diseases: American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease), dracunculiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis and schistosomiasis. The available technology and health infrastructures in developing countries permit the eradication of dracunculiasis and the elimination of lymphatic filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti. Blindness due to onchocerciasis and transmission of this disease will be prevented in eleven West African countries; transmission of Chagas disease will be interrupted. A well-coordinated international effort is required to ensure that scarce resources are not wasted, efforts are not duplicated, and planned national programmes are well supported.  (+info)

(4/2447) The future role of international agencies in control of acute respiratory tract infections.

Achievements in the control of acute respiratory infection (ARI) owe much to international collaboration in research, education, and delivery of services. This article highlights some of the current activities of the many international agencies involved and summarizes thoughts on their future roles. Key recent scientific advances include better surveillance, new and improved vaccines, refinement of standard clinical management plans and behavioral change techniques, and demonstration of the effectiveness of their application. Agencies involved include the World Health Organization, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, national government agencies for overseas aid, many academic departments, and professional lung health associations. However, much remains to be done, especially in collaborative research, in the devising, implementing, and evaluating of health care delivery systems in low-income countries, and in mobilizing political will and resources. These are tasks beyond the capacity of any lone agency. Success will depend on how effectively we collaborate.  (+info)

(6/2447) The efforts of WHO and Pugwash to eliminate chemical and biological weapons--a memoir.

The World Health Organization and the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (Nobel Peace Prize 1995) have been involved in questions concerning chemical and biological arms since the early 1950s. This memoir reviews a number of milestones in the efforts of these organizations to achieve the elimination of these weapons through international treaties effectively monitored and enforced for adherence to their provisions. It also highlights a number of outstanding personalities who were involved in the efforts to establish and implement the two major treaties now in effect, the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972 and the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993.  (+info)

(7/2447) Feasibility of finding an unrelated bone marrow donor on international registries for New Zealand patients.

Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is the treatment of choice for several hematological conditions. Unfortunately, for the majority (70%) of patients an HLA-matched sibling donor is not available and a matched unrelated donor must be found if they are to proceed to allogeneic transplantation. Most of the donors on international registries are of Caucasian ethnic origin. It has been recognized that patients from certain racial groups have a reduced chance of finding an unrelated donor. This study reports the feasibility of finding an unrelated donor for our local New Zealand patients of Caucasian, New Zealand Maori and Pacific Islander ethnic origin presenting with transplantable hematological conditions at a single center. The search was performed on international registries using HLA-A,B and DR typings for our patients. Six of six and five of six matches were evaluated. We have shown that Maori and Pacific Islanders have significantly lower hit rates than Caucasians when searched for 6/6 antigen matches, but there was no significant difference between the three ethnic groups in finding a 5/6 antigen matched donor. This study supports the policy of the New Zealand Bone Marrow Donor Registry in recruiting New Zealand Maori and Pacific Islanders.  (+info)

(8/2447) Hazardous wastes in eastern and central Europe: technology and health effects.

Issues of hazardous waste management are major concerns in the countries of eastern and central Europe. A National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences-supported conference was held in Prague, Czech Republic, as a part of a continuing effort to provide information and promote discussion among the countries of eastern and central Europe on issues related to hazardous wastes. The focus was on incineration as a means of disposal of hazardous wastes, with discussions on both engineering methods for safe incineration, and possible human health effects from incineration by-products. Representatives from government agencies, academic institutions, and local industries from 14 countries in the region participated along with a few U.S. and western European experts in this field. A series of 12 country reports documented national issues relating to the environment, with a focus on use of incineration for hazardous waste disposal. A particularly valuable contribution was made by junior scientists from the region, who described results of environmental issues in their countries.  (+info)

How to become an international adoption social worker/Case worker?

I want to become an international adoption social worker or case manager, but i don't know where to start. I want to build profiles of children and families, and i want to find families for children.
----------

Assuming you live in the USA, then you need to have a college degree in some type of human services field such as social work or psychology.  In California, where I live, with a BA in a human services field, you can be a caseworker in a county agency (CPS/foster care).  You can't do adoption homestudies or match children and families with having a Master's Degree in a human services field with an MSW (Master's in Social Work) preferred.  To work for private agencies who do international adoption, usually need  Master's Degree and in some cases, you need to be licensed (LMFT or LMFC).  So if you don't have a degree - work on that.  Look to volunteer or get an entry level job working with children in a group home or foster home type setting.  If you have your degree, then look at entry level jobs with your local state or county.  Adoption jobs, at least in my county, are highly coveted.  Most people start in other positions and transfer into adoptions once there is an opening.  Good luck to you!

How much does it cost for international students to get birth control pill from Planned Parenthood?

I'm an international student and thinking about getting birth control pill from Planned Parenthood.
I have no income in U.S., and I have insurance which all undergrad student in my college have to get. I'm not sure about the insurance, so if in the case that the insurance does not cover the cost for the pills, how much do you think I need to pay?
----------

In my situation, as a american citizen but with a low student income (they just ask how much you make) I was given a free exam, free STD testing, free birth control pills and a brown baggie of free condoms. (yea!)
Planned Parenthood is very understanding, and Im sure they will work with you to get you what you need at a low (if any) cost.
The best thing is just to go to a clinic, talk to the woman at the desk and she'll answer all your questions.
If you have some sort of insurance, the MOST you could expect to pay, even if you went for a perscription from a more costly gynocologist, would be somewhere from $25-$30 dollars per each month of pills. Planned Parenthood would cost much less.

good luck!

What would be a good international food to sell for a fundraiser?

We are having an international food sale at school where all the clubs sell food. What is something that would be both apetizing and cheap? (And easy to obtain, and large amounts) Something like chow mein?
----------

Back in high school I used to help sell burritos twice a year for the Spanish club. We would get at least tortillas and ground beef donated by the supermarket (you'd be surprised.. grocery stores love to donate to schools, it's good PR for them) and spend a couple hours assembling burritos.

In each one we'd add:
rice
cheese
cilantro
seasoned beef
sour cream
lettuce

and wrap em up! We did this the night before, wrapped each one in foil, Then to reheat them right before we sell them, we'd just stick em on a big tray and heat them in the oven for about ten minutes. We sold them for $1.50 and sold out every single time, we're talking hundreds of burritos here, gone in just an hour.

What is the difference between JA Henckels Twin and International Knives?

What is the difference in quality between JA Henckels Twin knives and the JA Henckels International knives.  The price differs greatly but is the international line still a really good quality?
----------

Obviously International knives are lower quality. main difference and the most substantial being the steel used in the blade.
Twin star line uses X50CrMoV15 steel, which is pretty good steel by western knife standards. Henckel refers to that as high carbon non stainless.

International line is however referred as high quality stainless. Which is just an obscure marketing term for low carbon stainless steel.

More details on the steel -
http://zknives.com/knives/kitchen/misc/articles/kkchoser/kksteelp2.shtml

In short the steel is cheaper and will not hold the edge as well as Twin line. Plus handle materials are lower quality.
Fit and finish is pretty much the same, so if that's your primary concern then go for it.
If the knife performance is your main criteria then no, international line isn't the same quality as twins.
Although, it all depends if you sharpen your knives or not.
If you don't then it doesn't matter what's the steel in the blade, it'll dull anyway and after a while both types will be equally dull.

it's not that hard to sharpen the knife with something as simple as sandpaper and mousepad - http://zknives.com/knives/articles/sandpapermousepad.shtml

Simple question, What popular international beer is not in australia?

They sell inconsequential insipid Corona, Bud, a few GB and  Japanese beers.

Bring earplugs for the other passengers in your immediate vicinity. That's just in case the little ones start to cry from the pressure of the plane. Also, make sure their sucking on something to help their inner ear stabilize during take-offs and landings. Good Luck!

How much caffeine does one sachet of international roast coffee contain?

It's just that International Roast coffee, even though I don't particularly like it, always seems to keep me up for a lot longer, so it'd be interesting to see how much caffeine it contains as opposed to some other brands.
----------

Not sure but I had some yesterday and made it with 2 heaped teaspoons in a mug. I had two in quick succession and was flying. I had to have a sit down and a couple of pints of beer to stop shaking.

What international foods go well with rice?

My college is hosting an international foods dinner THIS FRIDAY (Oct. 22nd, 2010). We're thinking of making a big vat of rice and a couple of things you can put on top of or mix with rice. So far, our ideas are a curry sauce, a khoresh (a type of Persian sauce), and red beans and rice. Does anyone have any other ideas? We are going to use some kind of white rice.
----------

For rice related dishes that's fast and easy to make in bulk:

1) Onigiri: http://food.3yen.com/wp-content/images/onigiri.jpg Lovely isn't it. LOL
2) Teriyaki chicken bowl. Pre-made chicken breast pieces - Costco. Pre-made sauce - Costco. Mixed vegetables - Frozen section.
3) Mango and sticky rice. Finding your mango source is the biggest problem. http://mouthwateringsf.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/mango-rice.jpg
4) Musubi: http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/spam_musubi.jpg
5) Pork chop and rice. Pork chop and rice was served in many different countries and they were made with different styles. I'd recommend deep fried pork chops mainly because of the shorter cooking time.
6) Chinese minced beef over rice: http://http.cdnlayer.com/smoola/00/00/34/1030d8b54f013192_m.jpg

If you only need to make one or two batches, GUMBO would be very nice. :)
