The symposium presents, as usual, lots of great stuff. My favourite is this piece on peace among primates, partly because it features my old professor Hans Kummer of Zurich University who supervised, three decades ago, my diploma thesis on the social behaviour of Hamadryas baboons, and partly because it is about primate behaviour which is fundamental stuff when it comes to ...

If you believe that there is a God up there someplace ...

Humanism is important in medical practice, and is included as a component in most definitions of medical professionalism. A healthcare practitioner who acts humanely thinks about the person under his or her care in a holistic manner, and behaves accordingly. Such a practitioner considers multiple perspectives and includes the patient and family in the decision-making process, identifies where the patient's perspectives might conflict with his own, or with societal norms and values, and finally acts in a way that ...

I think I understand where you're coming from about "British English"; the variety of English spoken in Great Britain, Ireland, and surrounding islands should not be grouped together under the misleading umbrella of "British English". More precisely, British English BrE does not include Scots English nor Hiberno-English nor yet Lallans Scots which is "more like a separate language than a regional dialect". My diagnosis is that Robin, having seen what fun some people have by pigheaded trolling, but being unwilling to indulge himself in the mathematical version thereof, has found a hobbyhorse--or hobbypig--of his own, and will ride it to death as long as anyone replies to him, if not ...

... 'Joachim Kahl' born 1941 in Cologne, Germany is a German freelance philosopher whose work focuses on the criticism of religion, ethics and aesthetics. He became an atheist and described the reasons for his decision in his book ‘Das Elend des Christentums oder Plädoyer für eine Humanität ohne Gott’ ‘The Misery of Christianity or a Plea for Humanity without God’. During his work in Philosophy and Social Sciences at Marburg University between 1974 and 1984 Kahl gave regular seminars on the history of philosophy. Eine Philosophie für unsere Zeit’ ‘Secular Humanism. Kahl writes: “Richard Dawkins' book 'The God Delusion’ which I use as my main example of the ‘new atheism’ … is a document typical of intellectual ‘imperial insanity’. According to the historian Ludwig Quidde, who coined the term in 1894, imperial insanity includes two interrelating characteristics: a triumphalistic delusion of grandeur and a profound blindness of reality.” The delusion of grandeur consists of Dawkins’ “assumption that he ...

Geoffrey Scott architectural historian. Geoffrey Scott architectural historian. 'Geoffrey Scott' 11 June 1884 – 14 August 1929 was an English scholar and poet, known as a historian of architecture. His biography of Isabelle de Charrière entitled 'The Portrait of Zelide' won the 1925 James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Born in Hampstead, Scott was educated at Rugby School and New College, Oxford. While still an undergraduate he was befriended by Mary Berenson, leading to his admission to the Florence 'circle' of Bernard Berenson. From 1907 to 1909 he was employed by Berenson; he worked on the design of the garden of 'I Tatti', the Berenson villa, with Cecil Ross Pinsent. This led to work on other gardens. In 1914 the publication of ' The Architecture of Humanism ' made him a reputation. He married in 1916 Lady Sybil Cutting, widowed in 1910 who later married Percy Lubbock. With little in the way of career, it has been suggested that an unlikely love affair with Vita Sackville-West from 1923 to 1925 ...

... The Philosophy of Atheism. How to bring the masses back to the God idea, the spirit, the First Cause, etc. But where are the gods to make an end to all these horrors, these wrongs, this inhumanity to man. The human mind is realizing "that the universe is not the result of a creative fiat by some divine intelligence, out of nothing, producing a masterpiece chaotic in perfect operation," but that it is the product of chaotic forces operating through aeons of time, of clashes and cataclysms, of repulsion and attraction crystalizing through the principle of selection into what the theists call, "the universe guided into order and beauty." As Joseph McCabe well points out in his Existence ot God: "a law of nature is not a formula drawn up by a legislator, but a mere summary of the observed facts - a 'bundle of facts.' Things do not act in a particular way because there is a law, but we state the 'law' because they act in that way." The philosophy of Atheism represents a concept of life without any ...

... In the Middle. Sunday, June 24, 2007. Frontpaging the Future. In this comment thread, Sylvia Huot asked a question that goes to the heart of the kind of thinking we attempt here at ITM : how to intertwine meditation upon past and future while retaining some confidence that we are doing justice to history. She writes: JJC said: 'The British Isles have been home to sophisticated peoples for millennia. We're still decoding the complicated messages they sent into a future so distant that. they could not possibly have imagined it, a megalithic version of the Long Now. So add this to our list of humanisms: the enduring desire to send beyond the horizon of our own mortality messages to be received and interpreted by future peoples whom we want to know that we lived, we were here, we did something in this land and at this time.' What I want to know is--how do you know that they had the desire you mention. How can you know they were thinking anything of the sort. They may, of course, have been thinking ...

« “The Art of Fielding”. What’s the meaning of all this. ». “The Swerve”. The Swerve  may sound like another baseball book, like a secret hidden pitch, but in fact it’s the story of the “hidden natural explanation for everything that alarms or eludes you,” namely atoms: it’s all “atoms and void and nothing else.”. But “nothing else”  is very misleading. Stephen Greenblatt ‘s account of how the fifteenth century rediscovery of Lucretius ‘ De Rerum Natura  modernized and humanized the world is chock full of unexpected atomic configurations. One of them is Montaigne ‘s cosmic speculation about going around the wheel more than once. It’s an intriguing, demystified, naturalistic intimation of Nietzsche’s version of the ancient hypothesis of eternal recurrence :. “Since the movements of the atoms are so varied,” he wrote, “it is not unbelievable that the atoms once came together in this way, or that in the future they will come together like this again, giving birth to another Montaigne.”. (2/70) Evaluating ethics competence in medical education.

We critically evaluate the ways in which competence in medical ethics has been evaluated. We report the initial stage in the development of a relevant, reliable and valid instrument to evaluate core critical thinking skills in medical ethics. This instrument can be used to evaluate the impact of medical ethics education programmes and to assess whether medical students have achieved a satisfactory level of performance of core skills and knowledge in medical ethics, within and across institutions.  (+info)

(3/70) Putting suffering into perspective: implications of the patient's world view.

The need for suffering patients to reexamine their assumptions about life presents therapists with unique challenges and opportunities. Patients with a religious world view often struggle with whether God cares about, or has sent, their pain. Atheistic patients also search for the meaning in their lives but reject the answers offered by traditional authorities. Patients who are uncertain or ambivalent about their world view may challenge a therapist to provide an audience, insight, or direction. Using case examples, the author explores the therapist's role in helping patients with differing world views to integrate their suffering.  (+info)

(4/70) Acting on an environmental health disaster: the case of the Aral Sea.

The Aral Sea area in Central Asia has been encountering one of the world's greatest environmental disasters for more than 15 years. During that time, despite many assessments and millions of dollars spent by large, multinational organizations, little has changed. The 5 million people living in this neglected and virtually unknown part of the world are suffering not only from an environmental catastrophe that has no easy solutions but also from a litany of health problems. The region is often dismissed as a chronic problem where nothing positive can be achieved. Within this complicated context, Medecins Sans Frontieres, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, is actively trying to assess the impact of the environmental disaster on human health to help the people who live in the Aral Sea area cope with their environment. Medecins Sans Frontieres has combined a direct medical program to improve the health of the population while conducting operational research to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the environmental disaster and human health outcomes. In this paper we explore the health situation of the region and the broader policy context in which it is situated, and present some ideas that could potentially be applied to many other places in the world that are caught up in environmental and human health disasters.  (+info)

(5/70) Reflections on a new medical cosmology.

Since the nineteenth century the theory and practice of mainstream Western medicine has been grounded in the biomedical model. In the later years of the twentieth century, however, it has faced a range of serious problems, which when viewed collectively, remain unresolved despite a variety of responses. The question we now face is whether these problems can be dealt with by modifying and extending the principles underlying the biomedical model, or whether a more radical solution is required. Recent critiques of Western medicine have focused mainly on the biopsychosocial model in relation to the former approach, but it will be contended that this cannot deal adequately with the challenges that medicine currently faces, because although it addresses both the scientific and humanistic aspects of medicine it fails to harmonise them. I shall therefore argue for the necessity of a more radical approach, and suggest that what is required to accomplish this is the development of a new medical cosmology, rooted in an older and more global framework. Such a fundamental change would inevitably involve a long term process which it is not yet possible to fully comprehend let alone specify in detail. Some of the necessary features of such a new medical cosmology can, however, already be distinguished and the outline of these is described.  (+info)

(6/70) A necessary inhumanity?

It is argued that the phrase "Necessary Inhumanity" more accurately describes the alienation required of doctors in some circumstances, than do modern sanitised coinages such as 'clinical detachment.' 'Detachment' and 'objectivity' imply separation, not engagement: creating distance not only from patients, but from the self: the process may well be required, but where it becomes too extreme or prolonged, it can damage everybody, including patients, family members, doctors themselves, and wider society. An awareness of the history of health care in the context of our society might assist self reflection--might help keep initiates in touch with the culture they have been induced to leave and might help them remain humane despite the bruising process of training.  (+info)

(7/70) Don't cry for us Argentinians: two decades of teaching medical humanities.

Medical humanities--history, literature, anthropology, ethics and fine arts applied to medicine--play an important role in medical education. For more than 20 years an effort has been made to obtain an academic identity for such a multidisciplinary approach. A distinction between humanitarianism and humanism is attempted here, the former being associated with medical care and the latter with medical education. In order more precisely to define the relationship between the arts and medicine, an alternative term "medical kalology", as-yet-unsanctioned, coined after the rules of medical terminology, is proposed. The Department of Medical Humanities in the School of Medicine, National University La Plata, submits the following apologia: Don't cry for us Argentinians, since the teaching of medical humanities has helped our doctors to function more truly humanistically during the past two decades, as we intend to continue with this calling in the future.  (+info)

(8/70) Use of animals in research: a science--society controversy? The American perspective: animal welfare issues.

My paper will focus on those events happening within the United States during the last year. The issue of including or excluding rats, birds and mice from inclusion under the Animal Welfare Act has been a difficult battle for both those that wish to exclude them and those that wish to include these animals under this legislation. As of the writing of this abstract, the Senate, which originally intended to include rats, birds and mice under the Animal Welfare Act, has passed an amendment which will permanently exclude their listing under this Act. During the last several years it has become clear that refinement, as one of the 3Rs, has and will become the most important set of activities to add humanness to animal experimentation. It is clear that refinement approaches provide the opportunity to possibly eliminate or significantly minimize any pain or distress in animal protocol. My presentation will focus on CAAT's (http://caat.jhsph.edu) activities in this important area. Understanding potential health hazards to environmental industrial chemicals has become a major focus of activity both in the US, Europe and Japan. These programs offer the first opportunity to provide information, in the public domain, on these chemicals. One of the consequences, however, is the potential requirement for large numbers of animals. In the presentation, I will focus on two approaches to significantly including the 3Rs in these important programs. Although it is common practice in Japan to recognize contributions of laboratory animals through a day of memorialization, this has not been the case in the United States. During the last year, several activities have been initiated to begin to institutionalize memorial services for animals used in research. As the host institution of Altweb (http://altweb.jhsph.edu), the alternative web site internationally, current statistics and accomplishments will be provided on its worldwide utilization.  (+info)

religious humanism

  • This is seen as giving rise to a false etymological assumption that "secular humanism" and "religious humanism" are both descendants of an older humanist movement, when in fact the phenomenon of religious people self-identifying either as "humanists" or "religious humanists" is a relatively recent occurrence, dating only from the late 20th century. itself

  • The term "secular humanism" itself originates from a condemnatory 1961 American Supreme Court judgment ( Torcaso v. As society progresses from religion to humanism, and more and more people are realising just how stressful?

  • and painful life can be, will assisted suicide lose its stigma, and be the most attractive option for suffering people who would like it to be available for when they want it, over useless therapists, prescribed drugs, and psychiatric wards?
  • This is proof we are slaves, if we are free, why can't we kill ourselves? i will tell you why because we are worker bees why the ruling class run away with everything. If society really cared about people it would hand out suicide kits to save people having to hang themselves off a tree in the middle of a cold, dark and damp forest. So no, the media will always keep people thinking suicide is a terrible thing and people trying to end their misery is worse than murder.

why do you think michelangelo's painting exemplifies the spirit if humanism in the arts?

Good Books for Introducing a 4 to 5 Year Old to Humanism, Skepticism & World Religions?

  • Not a single all-inclusive book, mind you. I'm looking for books that introduce each of these concepts in a form that would be coherent to a preschool child. My daughter reads on a 2nd to 3rd grade level alone, and appreciates and enjoys having read to her (but may not understand absolutely all of) chapter books like the Narnia Chronicles, Secret Garden, things of that sort - just to give a rough idea of what level of reading material I'm seeking.
  • Good question! I think that is all important - except the Skepticism because that is something life teaches for free. I found a book on World religions, and I think that a Chicken Soup for the Child's Soul would be great for ideal humanistic lessons. http://www.amazon.com/Kids-World-Religions-Jennifer-Glossop http://www.amazon.com/Chicken-Soup-Childs-Soul-Character-Building Now I think I am going to order both those books for my girls too! Reading is so important.

Humanism/Hedonism Tattoo?

  • I've been interested in getting a tattoo for sometime and I think I would like something involving humanism and hedonism in a balanced, ying and yang sort of sense. Originally I thought about getting the words literally spelled out with one on each arm. However, after seeing a friend do this with another concept I don't care for it much. My question is essentially what do you feel would be a good symbol for hedonism, seeing as humanism has an "official" symbol, or any design ideas with this concept. Thanks!
  • you could have the little humanism dude, and then like an aura surrounding him symbolizing the whole hedonism - pleasure thing in this aura could be anything that you enjoy, music, art, so forth and etc. i dunno... just a thought

Teens: What do you think about religion? What is your philosophy?

  • What do you believe in? What do you think about atheism and/or secular humanism? What about mormonism, or catholicism? Basically, what do you think about religion: do we need it, or not? I want some teenage answers here, to enlighten our generation.
  • I am an Atheist. My mom doesn't like the idea, but I told her that I can choose my own religion. (I'm 14) I don't believe parents should pressure their child into being something instead of letting them figure out their own beliefs by themselves. Just my opinion.

Should we euthanize SEVERELY handicapped/disabled babies?

  • The most flourishing cultures of the ancient world had citizens of great intelligence and strength, who had with every new generation experienced physical progress and intelligence, all thanks to euthanasia. The highest of social levels, the rulers of advanced societies saw nothing but true human sympathy and actual humanism in the act of euthanasia. They truly had societies of happy and fulfilled people who actually were able to give real contributions to society (unlike disabled people nowadays) and make planet Earth flourish, not just technologically (which is the only progress nowadays). The fact that a disabled person has to go through life knowing that he/she will most probably never experience the beauty of physical power, develop an empiristic perspective of life knowing or for the worst part, never experience the act of love with another person is absolutely horrifying for me. The fact that people actually know that a disabled person will live a life not having any of this in it, and not wanting to stop it is inhumane. A true act of sympathy and love, a true act of humanism is euthanasia of the disabled, thus stopping suffering, thus enabling the human mind and body to evolve further than we are now. It's horrifying how the world is full of moralists who constantly keep building up a wall of ignorance that does not enable human beings to develop physically and mentally. For example, if a baby is born without sight or hearing, and missing both arms, and is in constant pain, why would you keep the baby? This child will grow up without experiencing the beauty of the world. It will become trapped in its own shell, not knowing of any form of existence, other than through its sense of touch. It will feel pain every second. Would you allow a human to go through all that? Lets say we could kill it painlessly, it will die without suffering. Please do not bring God, or religion into this. I want a intelligent response to this, not religious morals. I know those babies are still humans, but they are in PAIN for the rest of their life. What justifies keeping them alive so they will feel pain for its whole life?
  • This type of individual should not have to experience the pain of life. Life is suppose to be special.

Why are drug addicts stigmatized?

  • If society promotes humanism and drug users are caught, they are treated like criminals. Why must a drug addict go to jail, instead of receiving counseling? It's obvious they turn to drugs to escape something. The greatest irony is that alcohol is legal and it is a drug that makes you very aggressive and dangerous, whereas most illegal drugs do not. I don't care about drug merchants, as I know any illegal business is more profitable than a legal one.
  • Drug addicts are stigmatized by the legal system out of ignorance of judges and prosecutors and the prison system. A drug addict does not belong in jail if his only crime was being an addict. It takes up space that should be used for those who are a danger to society. There should be in place a law that says that drug addicts after arrest should immediately be put in rehab and helped with their withdrawal and required to spend enough time with counseling that a healthy human being will be put back in society. The awful shame is that addicts are arrested and put in jail and forced to go through excruciating withdrawal symptoms without any medical help. This is inhumane. The Constitution prohibits cruel and unusual punishment and that is exactly what is happening. As for the stigmatization of those that we see who are addicted to drugs we can't help but think that they can get help and choose rehab rather than continuing the cycle of addiction. You are right about alcohol being a drug that also causes a severe change in the behavior and brain thoughts of a person. But society did try Prohibition and it didn't work. I don't think anybody has a solution for that.

AP EURO summer assighnment?

  • My summer assignment is to write an essay on how the Renaissance was a dramatic change from the middle ages. I was thinking of doing an introduction on how the middle ages began and how powerful church and feudalism became. Here is my introduction... Please is it good? I need opinions. - How was The Renaissance a dramatic change from the Middle Ages? The Renaissance, which is the translation of “Rebirth” in Italian, was a period of change, progress, and a new outlook on life in Europe from as early as the 14th century to the 17th century. This was a period of time that brought back Roman and Greek ideas as well as the thoughts of Humanism, Secularism, and Individualism. This period of advancement was a big change from the Middle Ages (350 A.D to 1450 A.D) that placed the Church and Feudalism as the center of society. The Middle Ages began to develop when the Western Roman Empire began to fall apart due to Barbarians and Germanic tribes attacking the empire from the north. This resulted in this part of the empire becoming a land of kingdoms which helped start a new era in Europe: The Middle Ages. While the Western Roman Empire did not bounce back the Eastern Roman Empire began to flourish in trade, wealth, and the growth of Roman Catholicism. This resulted in this part of the empire being re-named into the Byzantine Empire with its capital Constinople named after the Roman Empire's first Christian Emperor, Constantine the Great. In the West the Germanic tribes took over, great cities became no more, trade was destroyed, and Roman law ceased to exist. In the early Middle Ages the Roman Catholic Church was a civilized force. This resulted in the conversion of many Germanic tribes to Christianity. People crowded together for protection in small towns and villages that became isolated from leftover cities in the countryside. Cities were less common and the land was divided into small "countries" that was divided into large estates. During this time Feudalism became its basic government, the Church had a firm hand on society, famine became common, the Black Plague killed 1/3 of Europe's population, and the Crusades were fought. This time of gloom and depression was just a long winter waiting for a large “enlightening” sun to melt the misery away.
  • Looks good, but the one thing I would change is that in AP classes you use C.E. for AD, and B.C.E for BC
