Food chains intertwine locally into a food web because most organisms consume more than one type of animal or plant. PLANTS, which convert SOLAR ENERGY to food by PHOTOSYNTHESIS, are the primary food source. In a predator chain, a plant-eating animal is eaten by a larger animal. In a parasite chain, a smaller organism consumes part of a larger host and may itself be parasitized by smaller organisms. In a saprophytic chain, microorganisms live on dead organic matter.Food Analysis: Measurement and evaluation of the components of substances to be taken as FOOD.Feeding Behavior: Behavioral responses or sequences associated with eating including modes of feeding, rhythmic patterns of eating, and time intervals.Quality of Life: A generic concept reflecting concern with the modification and enhancement of life attributes, e.g., physical, political, moral and social environment; the overall condition of a human life.Population Dynamics: The pattern of any process, or the interrelationship of phenomena, which affects growth or change within a population.Food Supply: The production and movement of food items from point of origin to use or consumption.Quality Control: A system for verifying and maintaining a desired level of quality in a product or process by careful planning, use of proper equipment, continued inspection, and corrective action as required. (Random House Unabridged Dictionary, 2d ed)Quality of Health Care: The levels of excellence which characterize the health service or health care provided based on accepted standards of quality.Quality Assurance, Health Care: Activities and programs intended to assure or improve the quality of care in either a defined medical setting or a program. The concept includes the assessment or evaluation of the quality of care; identification of problems or shortcomings in the delivery of care; designing activities to overcome these deficiencies; and follow-up monitoring to ensure effectiveness of corrective steps.Food Preferences: The selection of one food over another.Food Labeling: Use of written, printed, or graphic materials upon or accompanying a food or its container or wrapper. The concept includes ingredients, NUTRITIONAL VALUE, directions, warnings, and other relevant information.Quality Indicators, Health Care: Norms, criteria, standards, and other direct qualitative and quantitative measures used in determining the quality of health care.Food Habits: Acquired or learned food preferences.Food Microbiology: The presence of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in food and food products. This term is not restricted to pathogenic organisms: the presence of various non-pathogenic bacteria and fungi in cheeses and wines, for example, is included in this concept.Food Industry: The industry concerned with processing, preparing, preserving, distributing, and serving of foods and beverages.Food Hypersensitivity: Gastrointestinal disturbances, skin eruptions, or shock due to allergic reactions to allergens in food.Food Handling: Any aspect of the operations in the preparation, processing, transport, storage, packaging, wrapping, exposure for sale, service, or delivery of food.Food Contamination: The presence in food of harmful, unpalatable, or otherwise objectionable foreign substances, e.g. chemicals, microorganisms or diluents, before, during, or after processing or storage.Health Food: A non-medical term defined by the lay public as a food that has little or no preservatives, which has not undergone major processing, enrichment or refinement and which may be grown without pesticides. (from Segen, The Dictionary of Modern Medicine, 1992)Food Safety: Activities involved in ensuring the safety of FOOD including avoidance of bacterial and other contamination.Fast Foods: Prepared food that is ready to eat or partially prepared food that has a final preparation time of a few minutes or less.Food Deprivation: The withholding of food in a structured experimental situation.Food, Fortified: Any food that has been supplemented with essential nutrients either in quantities that are greater than those present normally, or which are not present in the food normally. Fortified food includes also food to which various nutrients have been added to compensate for those removed by refinement or processing. (From Segen, Dictionary of Modern Medicine, 1992)Quality Improvement: The attainment or process of attaining a new level of performance or quality.

The correlations obtained by the spectra with the reference values of the quality characteristics for calibrations are performed by the software that comes with the equipment. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS The calibrations from the 'Williams', 'Packams' and 'Carrick' pears were obtained as a way of estimating accurate values of soluble solids SS and pulp firmness PF, with the results being close to those obtained by the reference method. The results of the linear regressions for the values of the NIR-Case and of the soluble solids measured destructively reference method for the validation of the calibrations are shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Although this correlation coefficient between values obtained by both methods is lower R = 0.60 than the coefficients obtained for 'Packams' and 'Carrick', and the R values for the respective cultivars evaluated in this study were within the obtained values by other authors. The recent crisis involving Chinese milk adulterated with melamine once again brings food safety into the public spotlight. New Tools to Help Detect Melamine in Skim Milk Powder. The FDA has also found baby formula produced in the United States to be safe after establishing a maximum residue limit MRL of 1 part per million PPM and testing more than 70 products. The effects of such bans on the food production industry are multiple, profound, and far-reaching. However, the melamine crisis highlights a more sinister threat to food quality and safety: fraudulent food adulteration. Because every molecule of melamine contains six atoms of nitrogen, adding a small amount of melamine to milk significantly increases the amount of nitrogen detected in the test, resulting ...

A quick review of product recalls and withdrawals in any given week reveals that allergens, and the need to declare their presence in foods, represent a massive challenge for the global food industry. Stringer99 December 14, 2012, 10:28 AM. I have both for the glock 19/23, and more often than not I see the VM II get recommended over the crossbreed, and im left wondering why. To me as far as IWB holsters, thinness is everything. My VM II is 43mm in width, my crossbreed is 36mm in width. This alone makes the crossbreed much more comfortable as well as easier to conceal. Also, the snaps on the VM II are a bitch to close with or without belt and they are bulky, whereas the thin crossbreed steel clips just glide on and off. The crossbreed is adjustable, the VM II is not. The black dye on the VM II transfers to my hands. The VM II is more expensive, and usually requires a 6 month wait. As far as I can tell, the only thing the VM II has going for it, is it's prettier. If you enjoyed reading about "Crossbreed Supertuck vs Milt Sparks Versa Max 2" ...

... April 30, 1995 Luster straightens out freshness problems. This haircare producer begins filling creme relaxer into nestable yogurt-style cups with freshness seals. For Chicago IL-based ethnic haircare producer Luster Products Creme Relaxer is a core product. To eliminate the damage Luster Products began inserting a 1 1/4" paperboard ring on top of the jar for added box support. Typically used for dairy products these injection-molded containers allow the heat-seal application of a "freshness seal" much like the tamper-evident seals found on yogurt and sour cream containers. Luster Products took advantage of this new surface: a "freshness guaranteed" starburst and Luster logo are printed on the film to alert users that the package is new. From a single 8-oz PP jar Luster Products moved to two containers-a 16-oz cup made of high-density polyethylene and a custom-designed 18-oz PP cup-to better fit the different shaped cartons. Both taller and slightly wider than the previous jar the new cups eliminate the ...

Clearance rates CR of Daphnia and Brachionus were calculated from a decrease in chlorophyll-a concentration using the PHYTO-PAM fluorometer for non-sacrificial sampling of chlorophyll-a. Clearance rates of Daphnia were measured and compared with those based on the cell-counts method using an electronic particle counter Coulter counter. Chlorophyll fluorescence-based CR for Daphnia magna were very strongly correlated with Coulter-based CR, ...

Chesapeake Bay Life Algae Green algae. Green algae live predominantly in freshwater areas. They can often be found on rocks, floating wood, and covering the surface of stagnant water. In fact, algal growth is often what makes partially submerged rocks and wood slippery. Green algae contain photosynthetic chemicals in the same proportion as many terrestrial plants; for that reason, many scientists believe that land plants evolved from certain types of green algae. Many species are also important food and oxygen sources for freshwater ecosystems. *  Translation (biology)
In molecular biology and genetics, 'translation' is the process in which cellular ribosomes create proteins. The tRNAs carry specific amino acids that are chained together into a polypeptide as the mRNA passes through and is "read" by the ribosome. tRNAs have a site for amino acid attachment, and a site called an anticodon. Aminoacyl tRNA synthetase s enzyme s catalyze the bonding between specific tRNA s and the amino acids that their anticodon sequences call for. This aminoacyl-tRNA is carried to the ribosome by EF-Tu, where mRNA codons are matched through complementary base pair ing to specific tRNA anticodons. They are the aminoacyl site abbreviated A, the peptidyl site abbreviated P and the exit site abbreviated E. Translocation occurs, moving the tRNA in the P site, now without an amino acid, to the E site; the tRNA that was in the A site, now charged with the polypeptide chain, is moved to the P site. Even when working with ordinary eukaryotic sequences such as the Yeast genome, it is often desired to ...

The biosynthesis of eicosanoids has been intensively studied in mammals and it is known that they are synthesised from the fatty acid, arachidonic acid, through either the cyclooxygenase COX pathway; the lipoxygenase LOX pathway; or the cytochrome P450 epoxygenase pathway. However, little is still known about the synthesis and structure of the pathway in invertebrates. Results: Here, we show transcriptomic evidence from Daphnia magna Crustacea: ...

... Nanotechnology. November 15, 2012 Nanoparticles: A greater danger to the environment than previously thought November 15, 2012. This has been shown in a new study of the University of Koblenz-Landau. Thus, the offspring of water fleas Daphnia magna exposed to nanoparticles of titanium dioxide react significantly more sensitively than the offspring of parents from a control group. According to the dosage of the nanoparticles, the offspring are two to five times more sensitive to these particles than untreated water fleas. In concentrations 50 times less than the usual effect threshold in parents, titanium dioxide - previously thought to be toxicologically harmless - already showed considerable effects in the following generation. Whether similar and other effects occur with other nanomaterials or organisms is not known at present. Standard tests not suited "The study substantiates that nanomaterials, due to their special properties, can induce surprising effects", explains Professor Ralf Schulz of the ...

... SCIENCE OBSERVER Rip Van Winkle Ecology Biologists awaken dormant eggs to observe life from the past and tease out how it differs from what lives today Catherine Clabby Scientists always seek new peepholes into the past. With these eggs, Hairston and others capture changes prompted by competition between organisms, exposure to human-made pollution and other environmental pressures. Pollution increased phosphorus levels in the lake, which increased the population of cyanobacteria, better known as blue-green algae. Filter-feeding Daphnia hatched from eggs dating from the 1960s could extract very little nutrition from the algae. But Daphnia hatched from eggs dated to the 1970s had adapted to extract more. In 2007, Ellen Decaestecker of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and colleagues reported, also in Nature, evidence for the so-called Red Queen hypothesis after studying diapausing eggs of both Daphnia and a parasite in European lakes. By testing both organisms, Decaestecker found that in as little ...

*  How to raise daphnia
... Tropical Fish. Tropical Fish. Raising Daphnia. Daphnia are small aquatic crustaceans that live in fresh water. The tropical fish books often mention daphnia as a food for fish. The best containers I have found for raising daphnia are the small plastic children’s wading pools about 3-4’ in diameter. Fill the pool with water, add a little soluble plant fertilizer like Miracle Grow, and some green water. If you don’t have green water just add some aquarium water. In about a week the water will start to turn green. If conditions are right, you will have a bloom in 2-3 weeks. From time to time you might also collect other critters like mosquito larvae, glass worms, or blood worms. Some people are concerned that the daphnia pool will become a major mosquito breeding ground. I try to collect all of them both to feed the fish and to keep the adult mosquito population down. Either the daphina keep the water too clean and the female mosquitoes won't lay eggs there, or the daphnia eat the newly hatched ...

PMID: 684554 Owner: NLM Status: MEDLINE. Abstract/OtherAbstract:. From 1969 to 1973, average expenditures for food at home reported by Retirement History Study respondents increased by almost the same proportion--30 percent--as did the food component of the consumer price index. The analysis was based largely on a regression technique that identifies the factors most important in explaining the variation in food expenditures. Size of household was the most important predictor of both the total level of household food expenditures and the per person level. With size of household and income taken into account, a number of socioeconomic ...
