International trade began along with the carriage trade along the Yangtze River.A Customs Office was established in 1685 to collect import taxes in response to the growing arrival of foreign ships. By the nineteenth century Shanghai was a paradise of international trade in textiles, porcelain and industrial raw materials with a large service economy of banking, printing, architecture and pharmaceuticals. This set the stage for the Opium Wars of the nineteenth Century. The British were doing a booming business taking opium from India and selling it in China, to offset their transportation costs of whatever they wanted to...

The marshes and mudflats of the San Francisco Estuary have been invaded by several non-native, invasive species of Spartina cordgrass, which are threatening the ecological and hydrologic balance of the ecosystem. Most Spartina control work requires specialized equipment with specially trained operators and crews, capable of working in the marsh environment. Spartina control work is complicated by several factors, including the presence of similar-appearing native plants such as Spartina foliosa and Scirpus, the presence of endangered species California clapper rail, salt marsh harvest mouse, and others, and the challenges of working in a tidal environment, with salt water inundating the worksite twice a day and presence of slippery mudflats and...

The pH , salinity, and water levels of estuaries vary, depending on the river that feeds the estuary and the ocean from which it derives its salinity oceans and seas have different salinity levels. These can become estuaries if there is a stream or river flowing into them. Circulation within estuaries. Estuarine circulation is common in estuaries; it occurs when fresh or brackish water flows out near the surface, while denser, saline water flows inward near the bottom. Estuaries can be grouped based on the circulation of water within them. River output greatly exceeds marine input; there is little mixing, and thus a sharp contrast between fres...

... Physical Natural Environment Fish The Severn Estuary and the waters further west to Bridgwater Bay have a very rich fish community with a combined total of 111 species 1. Though some of these are probably accidental marine visitors and only rarely observed such as the basking shark and sunfish, with others inadvertently swept downstream from rivers, it is considered that the fish assemblage in the Severn Estuary is one of the most diverse in the UK 2. It is also one of the more important nursery areas in Britain 3. Fish species may be categorised according to their lifecycle see Box 1. The most abundant in terms of both species and overall numbers are the marine estuarine-opportunists 4. These rely on the Estuary for some aspect of their life-cycle primarily juveniles that utilise the Estuary as a nursery such as sprat, bass see Fig. 1 and whiting. Other categories include predominantly marine and freshwater species that stray into estuarine waters, as well as small numbers that are truly estuarine and w...

MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN A FINE SAND TIDAL ESTUARY AFTER MEASURES OF RIVER IMPROVEMENT. G Hovers. Artificial shipping channels in fine sand tidal estuaries are difficult to maintain. The further deepening of the fairway necessitated the artificial narrowing of the river bed. In the improved river bed a continuous shifting of sediments is taking place, which is mainly due to the incessant action of the tidal currents. If one has a good knowledge of the natural shifting processes, it is possible nowadays, by using suitable Hopper suction dredgers, to employ to a certain extent methods of dynamic river ...

... org. Chemistry 2011 .org All About Chemistry... Leakage of carbon from land to rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal regions revealed. June 10, 2013 — When carbon is emitted by human activities into the atmosphere it is generally thought that about half remains in the atmosphere and the remainder is stored in the oceans and on land. The research, published in Nature Geoscience and led by researchers from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the University of Exeter, Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et l'Environnement, the University of Hawai'i and ETH Zürich, has for the first time shown that increased leaching of carbon from soil, mainly due to deforestation, sewage inputs and increased weathering, has resulted in less carbon being stored on land and more stored in rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries and coastal zones -- environments that are together known as the 'land- ocean aquatic continuum'. The study reviewed previously published data and showed that a significant fraction of the carbon em...

According to the MySpace page of Central Illinois Metal Booking Agency and Tours, MASTER and ESTUARY will team up for a two-week U.S. MASTER 's latest album, "Slaves to Society", will receive a U.S. For me and most other die-hard underground metallers in the '80s and early '90s understand the massive impact MASTER has had on the world of extreme metal. Most of the extreme bands that have gone on to massive success in the early '90s wave of death metal would be lying if they said they weren't affected one way or another by the powerful aggressive songs of MASTER. 'Slaves to Society' is quite possibly MASTER 's most aggressive album released to date and I'm honored to be working with them.". Paul Speckmann and MASTER have had an important impact on the development of extreme metal, and have been a major influence on bands like NAPALM DEATH, DEATH, BENEDICTION, TERRORIZER, NAUSEA, CARCASS, PESTILENCE, a...

Aug 4, 2014 Citizen Science Pathogen Monitoring in the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary Watershed Bacteria, Baykeeper, Beaches, Citizen science, Clean Water, Harbor Estuary Program. 0 Comments By Jim Ferretti. NY/NJ Baykeeper Lab. What’s the deal with bacteria. Bacteria along with soil erosion/runoff, and nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorus are the leading types of pollution in our nation’s waterways. Pathogenic, or disease-causing microorganisms are associated with fecal waste and can cause a variety of diseases typhoid, cholera, Cryptosporosis, etc either through ingestion/contact with contaminated water or ingestion of shellfish. Not all bacteria are harmful yogurt contains live bacteria cultures, but the presence of some indicator bacteria such as fecal coliforms and enterococci are a clue that potentially more harmful bacteria and viruses may be present in the water as well. There are many different types of general pathogens that are dangerous to humans, including bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Measur...

(8/71) Historical ecology with real numbers: past and present extent and biomass of an imperilled estuarine habitat.

Historic baselines are important in developing our understanding of ecosystems in the face of rapid global change. While a number of studies have sought to determine changes in extent of exploited habitats over historic timescales, few have quantified such changes prior to late twentieth century baselines. Here, we present, to our knowledge, the first ever large-scale quantitative assessment of the extent and biomass of marine habitat-forming species over a 100-year time frame. We examined records of wild native oyster abundance in the United States from a historic, yet already exploited, baseline between 1878 and 1935 (predominantly 1885-1915), and a current baseline between 1968 and 2010 (predominantly 2000-2010). We quantified the extent of oyster grounds in 39 estuaries historically and 51 estuaries from recent times. Data from 24 estuaries allowed comparison of historic to present extent and biomass. We found evidence for a 64 per cent decline in the spatial extent of oyster habitat and an 88 per cent decline in oyster biomass over time. The difference between these two numbers illustrates that current areal extent measures may be masking significant loss of habitat through degradation.  (+info)
