Water and tube samples were taken from 55 dental surgeries in southwestern England. Contamination was determined by viable counts on environmentally selective, clinically selective, and pathogen-selective media, and biofouling was determined by using microscopic and image analysis techniques. Microbial loading ranged from 500 to 10(5) CFU. ml(-1); in 95% of DUWS water samples, it exceeded European Union drinking water guidelines and in 83% it exceeded American Dental Association DUWS standards. Among visible bacteria, 68% were viable by BacLight staining, but only 5% of this "viable by BacLight" fraction produced colonies on agar plates. Legionella pneumophila, Mycobacterium spp., Candida spp., and Pseudomonas spp. were detected in one, five, two, and nine different surgeries, respectively. Presumptive oral streptococci and Fusobacterium spp. were detected in four and one surgeries, respectively, suggesting back siphonage and failure of antiretraction devices. Hepatitis B virus was never detected. Decontamination strategies (5 of 55 surgeries) significantly reduced biofilm coverage but significantly increased microbial numbers in the water phase (in both cases, P < 0.05). Microbial loads were not significantly different in DUWS fed with soft, hard, deionized, or distilled water or in different DUWS (main, tank, or bottle fed). Microbiologically, no DUWS can be considered "cleaner" than others. DUWS deliver water to patients with microbial levels exceeding those considered safe for drinking water.  (+info)

(5/198) Unconventional dentistry: Part I. Introduction.

This is the first in a series of five articles providing a contemporary overview and introduction to unconventional (alternative) dentistry (UD) and correlation with unconventional (alternative) medicine (UM). UD is analogous to and conceptually inseparable from UM. Dentists should learn about UD and UM and be aware of evidence on the safety and effectiveness of treatments and procedures. While being skeptical of promotions, dentists should be able to accept and encompass science-based advances and reject unproven and disproven methods. Incorporating selected unconventional methods with conventional dentistry in selected patients for specific purposes may be useful to both patients and dentists. Improved education in critical thinking, research, science, medicine, behaviour, communication and patient management is needed.  (+info)

(6/198) Unconventional dentistry: Part II. Practitioners and patients.

This is the second in a series of five articles providing a contemporary overview and introduction to unconventional dentistry (UD) and its correlation with unconventional medicine (UM). Dentists may provide unconventional services and use or prescribe unconventional products because of personal beliefs, boredom with conventional practice, lack of understanding of the scientific process or financial motivation. To promote these UD practices, unrecognized credentials and self-proclaimed specialties are advertised. Characteristics of users of unconventional practices are varied; however, UD users are more often female and highly educated. UD practitioners and users generally appear to be analogous to UM practitioners and users. Some UD treatments are more invasive or more costly than conventional dentistry.  (+info)

(7/198) Unconventional dentistry: Part III. Legal and regulatory issues.

This is the third in a series of 5 articles providing a contemporary overview and introduction to unconventional dentistry (UD) and its correlation to unconventional medicine (UM). UD presents issues of dental quackery, fraud and malpractice, and it also engenders professional concerns about public protection and professional risks. Case reports illustrate numerous issues. The reader is encouraged to evaluate the cases for problems related to malpractice, fraud, ethics, behaviours and professionalism. A discussion of ethical issues is beyond the scope of this paper.  (+info)

(8/198) An analysis of antibiotic prescriptions from general dental practitioners in England.

The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotics prescribed by general dental practitioners (GDPs). Adult antibiotic prescriptions issued by GDPs from 10 Health Authorities (HAs) in England were analysed. The type of antibiotic prescribed, dose, frequency and duration were investigated. Most of the 17007 prescriptions were for generic antibiotics; nine different antibiotics were prescribed. Many practitioners prescribed antibiotics inappropriately with inconsistent frequency and dose, and for prolonged periods.  (+info)

dentistry??

do you have to have a good personal dental background to be accepted into dentistry. i do have good dental care but as there are no problems with my teeth i havent been to the dentist for 4 years. i stopped going to checkups after we moved house. thanks
----------

i dont think it matter's what your own teeth are like as long as you can do the job

my barber is bald but he still knows how to cut hair?

Dentistry?

I want to do dentistry at university , i know i can get and A in chemistry, and i hope i can in biology, but i might get a B, will that still be accepted , given i get ABB overall , even though they want AAB
----------

The magnitude of studying dentistry is so great that, even if you were accepted, you would might have trouble keeping up. I'm a dental student, I got AAAA and I feel completely lost at times. I had a friend who was accepted with ABB as she had loads of work experience and she dropped out within the first semesta.

Having said that, if you absolutely cane it you could be a great dentist! By the way, Birmingham only asks for ABB, but as I mentioned, admissions tutors seem to care more about the quality of work experience and interest in dentistry than your grades.

I don't mean to sound rude and pretentious but it's important that you know this. Good luck!

What in dentistry is it called to replace a missing tooth?

What is the term used in dentistry to replace a missing tooth?  I had a root canal done on a tooth, and it was never finished, the tooth was left hollow and it recently just broke off and only a small peice up close to the gum line is broken.  It is my left front tooth.  It's very unattractive, and I need to get it fixed.  Would this procedure be called a crown, a cap or what exactly is involved in cosmetic dentistry to replace a missing tooth?  Is it expensive?
----------

Now that the tooth is decayed you have several options
1.  Crown Lengthening and crown; Since there the body (coronal portion)of the tooth is gone.  You can have a procedure done to actually remove bone to expose healthy root structure(usually no more than 2mm).  this procedure allows the dentist finish a crown on the health tooth structure. This procedure is destructive to bone but is usually chosen by the patient who is not ready to loose a natural tooth.

2.  Bridge; You can have the tooth removed and have a bridge placed.    This is an option provided that it is not the last tooth in the arch.  so there has to be a tooth in the front and the back, to allow the bridge to be placed.

3.  You can have tooth removed and have an implant placed.  This is by far the most expensive in the short term but has the potential to cost you less in the long-term since implants don't decay.  The only risk is of structural failure and bone infection (low with reasonable care).  this is      a great option.  However prices can skyrocket if you need a bone graft.  Since you had the root canal a couple of years ago chances are the bone is still pretty good in your case.

4.  You can have the tooth removed and have a "flipper" made.  The is a plastic partial denture, made to fill the space.  This is an option if funds are limited and you need the gap filled for aesthetic purposes.

5.  You can have a removable permanent denture made.  This is similar to the flipper, but the design is different.  It has metal bars and lots of spaced to allow the tissues to breath thus allowing it to be used long-term without harming the gums.

Prices range from $350 for a flipper, to $3500 for implant and crown.

good luck

What Type Of Dentistry is the most earning and what places?

What type of dentistry makes the most money and how long must you go to school for that type of dentistry. Where do dentsits make the most money what states, cities? I know Utah is the least earning and alaska is the most but why arent that many dentists in alaska. Thank you in advance!
----------

Oral Surgery, Endodontics and Orthodontics.

Doesn't matter in which state, but definitely in affluent neighborhoods.

What is the difference between Pre-Dentistry and Dentistry?

I'm thinking about which college to attend. Some colleges say "Pre-dentistry" and some say "dentistry" is there a difference? Also what does the denstistry program cover; dentist, orthodontist, hygienist or all of the above?
So it would be better off in the future if I took dentistry instead of pre-dentistry?
----------

Pre dentistry is taken in undergraduate school in college to obtain a BS or BA degree.  This will take 4-5 years.  Once you have that you can apply to dental school to get a DDS degree in 4 years.

Can I start practicing dentistry if I have a BDS?

You can enroll in a program that awards a BDS degree as soon as u finish highschool, am i correct?

and u can start practicing dentistry when u have a BDS degree, or do u need to do something more after u get ur BDS?
----------

How do you get braces for really cheap? And what is the school of dentistry program called?

I believe the program for college dentistry begins with an r, it's where student orthodontics need people to prove that they know what they are doing. I hear that is really cheap, but there may be cheaper ways. Also if you had insurance that covered orthodontic treatments or procedures, namely braces, could it be used for your braces at the school of dentistry?

Please tell what ways to get braces without paying so much.
----------

Depends on which school of dentistry you are talking about.

Yes, insurances that cover the cost of braces are generally accepted at any dental school.

What is the cost per tooth for cosmetic dentistry? And did you get a loan to have your teeth done?

I read up about the procedure for cosmetic dentistry, and I want to know what it cost you to have cosmetic dentistry done on your teeth, what insurance company covered you, and if you took out a loan to get that done which loan company did you use?
still looking for someone who had cosmetic dentistry done.  I hear it's about $100 per tooth, is that what you paid?
----------

I've had 11 crowns for restorative purposes but the cosmetic effect is the same as having them done for THAT purpose, and it was about one thousand per crown.  A friend is having veneers and crowns specifically for cosmetic purposes only, and he also told me one thousand each.  That's a pretty good average for cosmetic work per tooth.

Occasionally at times I had dental insurance they'd cover up to a certain amount per year (most plans cap it at one thousand, others two.)  Of course, that includes all the other dental work included over the course of a year, not just crowns.  Without insurance I just paid privately.  But I must warn you, if you are having it done specifically for cosmetic purposes, they will NOT cover the procedures at all.  Mine had to have series of x-rays, photos and dentist's reports for the teeth in question just to prove that my work was necessary, not cosmetic.  In fact I had coverage for one tooth declined for that very reason.  As for a loan, ask the dentist office.  I'm sure they have financing steps they will help you through.
