Dental Enamel Solubility: The susceptibility of the DENTAL ENAMEL to dissolution.Dental Enamel: A hard thin translucent layer of calcified substance which envelops and protects the dentin of the crown of the tooth. It is the hardest substance in the body and is almost entirely composed of calcium salts. Under the microscope, it is composed of thin rods (enamel prisms) held together by cementing substance, and surrounded by an enamel sheath. (From Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p286)Dental Enamel Hypoplasia: An acquired or hereditary condition due to deficiency in the formation of tooth enamel (AMELOGENESIS). It is usually characterized by defective, thin, or malformed DENTAL ENAMEL. Risk factors for enamel hypoplasia include gene mutations, nutritional deficiencies, diseases, and environmental factors.Dental Enamel Proteins: The proteins that are part of the dental enamel matrix.Enamel Organ: Epithelial cells surrounding the dental papilla and differentiated into three layers: the inner enamel epithelium, consisting of ameloblasts which eventually form the enamel, and the enamel pulp and external enamel epithelium, both of which atrophy and disappear before and upon eruption of the tooth, respectively.Amelogenesis: The elaboration of dental enamel by ameloblasts, beginning with its participation in the formation of the dentino-enamel junction to the production of the matrix for the enamel prisms and interprismatic substance. (Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992).Solubility: The ability of a substance to be dissolved, i.e. to form a solution with another substance. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)Ameloblasts: Cylindrical epithelial cells in the innermost layer of the ENAMEL ORGAN. Their functions include contribution to the development of the dentinoenamel junction by the deposition of a layer of the matrix, thus producing the foundation for the prisms (the structural units of the DENTAL ENAMEL), and production of the matrix for the enamel prisms and interprismatic substance. (From Jablonski's Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992)Dental Enamel Permeability: The property of dental enamel to permit passage of light, heat, gases, liquids, metabolites, mineral ions and other substances. It does not include the penetration of the dental enamel by microorganisms.Amelogenin: A major dental enamel-forming protein found in mammals. In humans the protein is encoded by GENES found on both the X CHROMOSOME and the Y CHROMOSOME.Tooth Calcification: The process whereby calcium salts are deposited in the dental enamel. The process is normal in the development of bones and teeth. (Boucher's Clinical Dental Terminology, 4th ed, p43)Amelogenesis Imperfecta: A clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of hereditary conditions characterized by malformed DENTAL ENAMEL, usually involving DENTAL ENAMEL HYPOPLASIA and/or TOOTH HYPOMINERALIZATION.Matrix Metalloproteinase 20: A secreted matrix metalloproteinase that is the predominant proteolytic activity in the enamel matrix. The enzyme has a high specificity for dental enamel matrix protein AMELOGENIN.Tooth Demineralization: A tooth's loss of minerals, such as calcium in hydroxyapatite from the tooth matrix, caused by acidic exposure. An example of the occurrence of demineralization is in the formation of dental caries.Dental Caries: Localized destruction of the tooth surface initiated by decalcification of the enamel followed by enzymatic lysis of organic structures and leading to cavity formation. If left unchecked, the cavity may penetrate the enamel and dentin and reach the pulp.Dental Care: The total of dental diagnostic, preventive, and restorative services provided to meet the needs of a patient (from Illustrated Dictionary of Dentistry, 1982).Hardness: The mechanical property of material that determines its resistance to force. HARDNESS TESTS measure this property.Tooth Remineralization: Therapeutic technique for replacement of minerals in partially decalcified teeth.Tooth Bleaching: The use of a chemical oxidizing agent to whiten TEETH. In some procedures the oxidation process is activated by the use of heat or light.Tooth Erosion: Progressive loss of the hard substance of a tooth by chemical processes that do not involve bacterial action. (Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p296)Tooth Discoloration: Any change in the hue, color, or translucency of a tooth due to any cause. Restorative filling materials, drugs (both topical and systemic), pulpal necrosis, or hemorrhage may be responsible. (Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p253)Hardness Tests: A test to determine the relative hardness of a metal, mineral, or other material according to one of several scales, such as Brinell, Mohs, Rockwell, Vickers, or Shore. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)Tooth: One of a set of bone-like structures in the mouth used for biting and chewing.Fluorides: Inorganic salts of hydrofluoric acid, HF, in which the fluorine atom is in the -1 oxidation state. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed) Sodium and stannous salts are commonly used in dentifrices.Cariostatic Agents: Substances that inhibit or arrest DENTAL CARIES formation. (Boucher's Clinical Dental Terminology, 4th ed)Molar: The most posterior teeth on either side of the jaw, totaling eight in the deciduous dentition (2 on each side, upper and lower), and usually 12 in the permanent dentition (three on each side, upper and lower). They are grinding teeth, having large crowns and broad chewing surfaces. (Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p821)Education, Dental: Use for articles concerning dental education in general.Fluorosis, Dental: A chronic endemic form of hypoplasia of the dental enamel caused by drinking water with a high fluorine content during the time of tooth formation, and characterized by defective calcification that gives a white chalky appearance to the enamel, which gradually undergoes brown discoloration. (Jablonski's Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p286)Schools, Dental: Educational institutions for individuals specializing in the field of dentistry.Incisor: Any of the eight frontal teeth (four maxillary and four mandibular) having a sharp incisal edge for cutting food and a single root, which occurs in man both as a deciduous and a permanent tooth. (Jablonski, Dictionary of Dentistry, 1992, p820)Students, Dental: Individuals enrolled a school of dentistry or a formal educational program in leading to a degree in dentistry.

Purpose: This study evaluated the etching effect of self-etching priming agents applied to intact and ground enamel. The buccal or lingual mid-coronal surface of 32 half-teeth was ground with 600-grit silicon carbide paper. The other half-teeth were left intact control. Those in the control group were etched with 35% phosphoric acid. The etching effect of such systems on enamel surfaces was assessed by three different approaches using scanning electron microscopy: 1 in situ or direct morphological examination of the etched enamel; 2 indirect morphological examination, that is, evaluation of the etching pattern left on resin reproductions; 3 adhesive interface examination. Results: SE exhibited t...

... Tooth enamel. Though only someone with an excellent knowledge of dentistry would be qualified to comment on the more technical aspects of this article, this article is a comprehensive well-written, illustrated treatment of Tooth enamel. It seems to me that it deserves featured article status. -- Zantastik 22:24, 29 Apr 2005 UTC. 'Oppose' for two objections: the references need formatting work see Wikipedia:References and it needs to say something about how much of this is true for non-human animals. Which animals have enamel. If there's a lot of variation, then much of this article may be better moved to human tooth enamel or primate tooth enamel or whatever. Tuf-Kat 18:21, May 1, 2005 UTC I added the material I could find on animal tooth enamel. It seems like there are some very specific but slight differences of enamel in animals that would probably not warrant a completely unique article on the subject. The types of teeth is an entirely different story, and each animal could probably have their own ar...

... Your source for the latest research news. Competing Proteins Influence Strength Of Tooth Enamel. Date: September 7, 2005 Source: University of Southern California Summary: A gene critical to tooth enamel formation expresses a protein that is then cleaved into a pair of proteins with opposing functions. Lead author Michael Paine of the USC School of Dentistry saidboth proteins derive from the gene for dentin sialophosphoprotein, which plays an important role in the formation of the tooth coveringsenamel and its softer internal cousin dentin. In normal teeth, DSP is expressed only in dentin and a verythin layer of enamel at the junction with dentin. University of Southern California. ... Image:SKX 21841 Recto.jpg The 'striae of Retzius' are incremental growth lines or bands seen in tooth enamel. They represent the incremental pattern of enamel, the successive apposition of different layers of enamel during crown formation. Appearance Causes Qualities Illustrations References. Appearance. When viewed microscopically in cross-section, they appear as concentric rings. In a longitudinal section, they appear as a series of dark bands. The presence of the dark lines is similar to the annual rings on a tree. In the longitudinal section of a tooth. these lines appear near the dentin. Produced during the second stage of enamel calcification, also known as the maturation stage, ameloblast s produce matrix and enamel at the rate of 4 micrometers per day; however every fourth day there is a change in development. Brownish lines, the striae of Retzius, develop as a result of a change in the growth process. Macroscopically, these lines can be seen on the labial surface or lip side of anterior or front...

Mythbusters: Cavity edition: Part 2. Leave a reply. The best cavity prevention is a good oral hygiene routine. TRUE. Of course. It may seem like common sense, but regular brushing and flossing is the best way you can prevent cavities. Try to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Ideally, you should brush your teeth three times. By: Floss Dental. On: December 24, 2010. Read More ». Enamel erosion. Leave a reply. Tooth enamel, the strongest substance in the human body, is the protective outer layer of teeth. Home Photo Gallery About Contact Us Blog. Weak Biting Surface or Weak Enamel December 9, 2009 By. Wilhelm Helmbold. Question:. Dr. Sam, my dentist told me I have a weak biting surface and should go and see a specialist. What is a “weak biting surface” and how can this be fixed. Who can fix a weak biting surface. Answer:. The biting surface of our teeth wears down with age in most people. Over decades of wear, our teeth loose enamel just like the tread on our tires. If the enamel is weak, the loss of tooth enamel due to wear is increased. Weak biting surfaces wear down faster than strong biting surfaces. When the bite wears down, the overbite generally increases, the jaw is pushed back and the TMJ becomes problematic. The TMJ can click or pop. We can get headaches or sore ...

Enamelware is made with a base metal of steel, iron or aluminum that is covered with a glass-like material called porcelain enamel. Making Porcelain Enamel The process of making porcelain enamel begins with clays, electrolytes, metal oxides and water, just as in making glass. While glossy, acid resistant porcelain enamels are not photosensitive, matte-finish and some types of highly pigmented red and yellow porcelain enamels may show some fading after several years of weathering, and alkali resistant porcelain enamels are not necessarily acid resistant. Although very hard, a thin coating 1-mil or less on steel or aluminum can flex more with th...

Summary Enamel matrix protein derivatives EMDOGAIN, which mainly consists of amelogenins, have been used clinically to regenerate bony defects due to chronic inflammatory periodontal disease for several years. It is suggested that during periodontal wound healing, enamel matrix protein derivatives reactivate odontogenetic processes, which promote the formation of cementum with inserting fibers. The aim of our study was to investigate long-term effects of EMDOGAIN on regeneration of non-inflammatory marginal recessions. For root coverage, application of EMDOGAIN was combined with a coronary positioned flap in a surgical procedure. Measurements of recession depth and width, clinical attachment level and pocket probing depths were performed to evaluate the effect of EMDOGAIN on promoting periodontal wound healing qualitatively and quantitatively. The study was designed as a rand...

ABSTRACT: Understanding the cellular and molecular events that regulate the formation of enamel is a major driving force in efforts to characterize critical events during amelogenesis. While knowledge of the precise role of an enamel-specific protein in directing the formation of inorganic crystallites remains refractory, progress has been made with other aspects of amelogenesis that can be brought to bear on the subject. This promoter can be used to direct the expression of enamel-specific proteins, as well as the expression of proteins foreign to amelogenesis, into the enamel extracellular matrix where their effect on biomineraliza...

... Measuring 4 μm wide to 8 μm high, an enamel rod is a tightly packed, highly organized mass of hydroxyapatite crystals, which are hexagonal in shape and provide rigidity to the rods and strengthen the enamel. In cross section, it is best compared to a keyhole with the top, or head, oriented toward the crown of the tooth and the bottom, or tail, oriented toward the root of the tooth. They range from 5 million to 12 million in number. 5 million in mandibular lateral incisor and 12 million in maxillary first molars. Enamel rods are found in rows along the tooth. Within each row, the long axis of the enamel rod generally is perpendicular to the underlying enamel-dentine junction. In permanent teeth, the enamel rods near the cementoenamel junction CEJ tilt slightly more toward the root of the tooth than would be expected. Knowing the orientation of enamel is very important in restorative dentistry because enamel unsupported by underlying dentin is prone to fracture and usually is avoided. The arrangement of cr...

... The 'Hildebrand solubility parameter' δ provides a numerical estimate of the degree of interaction between materials, and can be a good indication of solubility, particularly for nonpolar materials such as many polymer s. Definition Uses and limitations Units Examples See also References Notes. The Hildebrand solubility parameter is the square root of the cohesive energy density:. Joel Henry Hildebrand suggested the square root of the cohesive energy density as a numerical value indicating solvency behavior. This later became known as the “Hildebrand solubility parameter”. Materials with similar solubility parameters will be able to interact with each other, resulting in solvation, miscibility or swelling. It has found particular use in predicting solubility and swelling of polymers by solvents. The principal limitation of the solubility parameter approach is that it applies only to associated solutions "like dissolves like" or, technically speaking, positive deviations from Raoult's law : it cannot acco...

Its value indicates the degree to which a compound dissociates in water. The higher the solubility product constant, the more soluble the compound. The Ksp expression for a salt is the product of the concentrations of the ions, with each concentration raised to a power equal to the coefficient of that ion in the balanced equation for the solubility equilibrium. In case of alcohols, just as it happens in case of many other biological molecules, the basic solubility rule that like dissolves like is a bit more complexed. Each alcohol consists of a carbon chain always nonpolar and a OH group which is polar. For ethanol for example the chemical formula looks lie this: C 2 H 5 OH. Ethanol has a 2 carbon chain and a OH group. As water is polar it attracts OH group. Carbon chain on the other hand as nonpolar is repelled. Solubility of alcohols is therefore determined by the stronger of the two forces. Because of the strength of the attraction of the OH group, first three alcohols methanol, ethanol and propanol are comp...

Solubility Queries and the Google Visualization API. with one comment There was a FriendFeed dicussion on the use of RDF triples for representing the solubilty data generated by Jean-Claude and others as part of the ONS Solubility Challenge. Part of the discussion revolved around letting RDF novices easily perform queries of the data being collected. Not knowing much about RDF, I took the raw data from the Google Docs and loaded it into a Postgres database and whipped up a simple query form. But what is cool is that the Google Visualization API makes it really easy for me include charts and other visualizations very easily. For example, if you select “any” as the solvent and then select a solute, the form creates a table of solubilities of that solute in all the solvents it was measured in. A natural view of the data is to look at a bar chart of the solubilities across the various solvents. Since my form is built using mod python, it’s a simple matter to write out the Javascript to call the Google API. var d...

Abstract The best means of selective dissolution of ordinary portland cement OPC from ground granulated blast-furnace slag BFS cements has been, until now, a sodium-based alkaline aqueous solution of ethylenediamine-tetraacetate with chelating properties supplemented by the presence of 6% triethanolamine TEA. This large cation has a selective decelerating effect on the release of aluminum from aluminosilicate glasses. Thus, its introduction slows down dissolution of BFS and slightly accelerates the dissolution of OPC. A higher pH for exam...

Microscopic Interpretations of Drug Solubility. by Bondesson, Laban. Abstract Summary. The development of computational models for predicting drug solubility has increased drastically during the last decades. Nevertheless these models still have difficulties to estimate the aqueous solubility as accurately as desired. Different aspects that are known to have a large impact on the aqueous solubility of a molecule have been studied in detail in this thesis using various theoretical methods with intension to provide a microscopic view on drug solubility. The first aspect studied is the hydrogen bond energies. The validity of the additive model, often used in the field of solubility models has been tested using density functional theory by examining eight drug molecules. The impact of hydrogen bonds in Infrared and Raman spectra of three commonly used...

... Industry News. Skin Care. Delivery systems not only play an increasingly important role in the development of effective skin care products but the technology continues to become more sophisticated and complex. Drugs with low lipid solubility due to ionization need an active transport system since ionized molecules do not penetrate membranes. In contrast, drugs with low lipid solubility will need a membrane carrier or active transport system. Drugs with high dipole moment, even though unionized, have low lipid solubility and, hence, penetrate poorly. More than 70 companies have developed advanced drug delivery technologies for poorly water-soluble drugs. Amorphous nanoparticles of poorly water-soluble drugs have been developed via novel processes for enhanced dissolution rates and improving solubility and bioavailability. They are soluble in water, but have properties different from linear macromolecules of similar molecular weight. Many delivery systems rely on penetration enhancers to increase drug tran...

... and Complex-Ion Equilibria Solubility Solubility Product Common Ions and Complex Ions Combined Equilibria. Solubility Why Do Some Solids Dissolve In Water. Solubility Equilibria Solubility Rules. Why Do Some Solids Dissolve in Water. When sugar dissolves in water, the weak bonds between the individual sucrose molecules are broken, and these C 12 H 22 O 11 molecules are released into solution. It takes energy to break the bonds between the C 12 H 22 O 11 molecules in sucrose. It also takes energy to break the hydrogen bonds in water that must be disrupted to insert one of these sucrose molecules into solution. Sugar dissolves in water because energy is given off when the slightly polar sucrose molecules form intermolecular bonds with the polar water molecules. The weak bonds that form between the solute and the solvent compensate for the energy needed to disrupt the structure of both the pure solute and the solvent. When one of these solids dissolves in water, the ions that form the solid are released int...

and in a specific dosage form such as a tablet, capsule, solution and so on. The rate of dissolution is a key target for controlling the duration of a drug's effect, and as such, several dosage forms that contain the same active ingredient may be available, differing only in the rate of dissolution. Additionally, slow-release dosage forms may maintain concentrations within an acceptable therapeutic range over a long period of time, as opposed is quick-release dosage forms which may result in sharper peaks and troughs in serum concentrations. A is the surface area of the solid. As can be inferred by the Noyes-Whitney equation, the rate of dissolution may be modified primarily by altering the surface area of the solid. The surface area may be adjusted by altering the particle size e.g. However, it should be noted that although the reduction of particle size increases the specific surface area and the dissolution rate, it does not affect solubility. Specifically, crystalline forms dissolve slower than amorphous ...

'Amelogenesis' is the formation of enamel on teeth and begins when the crown is forming during the bell stage of tooth development after dentinogenesis, which is the formation of dentin. Although dentin must be present for enamel to be formed, ameloblasts must also be for dentinogenesis to continue. Ten Cate's Oral Histology, Nanci, Elsevier, 2013, page 133- 148 The first stage is known as the inductive stage, the second is the secretory stage, and the third stage is known as the maturation stage. (1/23) The chemistry of enamel caries.

The chemical changes which occur during the process of carious destruction of enamel are complex due to a number of factors. First, substituted hydroxyapatite, the main component of dental enamel, can behave in a very complex manner during dissolution. This is due not only to its ability to accept substituent ions but also to the wide range of calcium phosphate species which can form following dissolution. In addition, the composition, i.e., the extent of substitution, changes throughout enamel in the direction of carious attack, i.e., from surface to interior. Both surface and positively birefringent zones of the lesion clearly illustrate that carious destruction is not simple dissolution. Selective dissolution of soluble minerals occurs, and there is the probability of reprecipitation. The role of fluoride here is crucial in that not only does it protect enamel per se but also its presence in solution means that rather insoluble fluoridated species can form very easily, encouraging redeposition. The role of organic material clearly needs further investigation, but there is the real possibility of both inhibition of repair and facilitation of redeposition. For the future, delivering fluoride deep into the lesion would appear to offer the prospect of improved repair. This would entail a delivery vehicle which solved the problem of fluoride uptake by apatite at the tooth surface. Elucidation of the role of organic material may also reveal putative mechanisms for encouraging repair and/or protecting the enamel mineral.  (+info)

(2/23) Effect of experimental fluoride-releasing tooth separator on acid resistance of human enamel in vitro.

This study aimed to investigate the fluoride-releasing ability of an experimental tooth separator consisting of polyurethane elastomer with tin fluoride and its effect on the acid resistance of human enamel. The tooth separator was set around an enamel slab and stored in de-ionized water for 10 days. The daily concentration of fluoride in the de-ionized water was measured. Then the enamel surface was artificially decalcified by a lactic acid buffer solution (pH 4.5) for 96 hours. The mineral density at the surface layer of the enamel was measured to evaluate the acid resistance. The fluoride release increased with the amount of fluoride in the separator, but decreased with the immersion time. Both the enamel area contacting with the separator and its surrounding area showed lower mineral loss and lesion depth compared with the controls (P < 0.05). It is suggested that the experimental tooth separator would release enough fluoride and improve the acid resistance of the enamel surface layer.  (+info)

(3/23) A comparative study of fluoride-releasing adhesive resin materials.

One of the most important and exciting properties of recently introduced dental restorative materials is their ability to release fluoride ions, as this has several advantageous effects on tooth structures. They have been extensively used as fluoride-releasing filling and luting materials. Recently, fluoride-releasing adhesive resins and fluoride-releasing adhesive resin cement have been developed and introduced for clinical use. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fluoride release from these adhesive resins and the fluoride uptake by both enamel and dentin, as well as the acid-resistance of these tooth structures. Based on our results, we conclude that fluoride-releasing adhesive resins and luting cements are useful for the prevention of initial or secondary caries, especially along the margins of restorations.  (+info)

(4/23) Relationship between the fluoride concentration of the fluoride-releasing elastomers and the acquired acid resistance of human enamel in vitro.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the fluoride concentration of the fluoride-releasing elastomers and the acquired acid resistance of human enamel. Four kinds of fluoride concentration of the experimental fluoride-releasing elastomers were 1.25, 2.5, 3.75 and 5.0 wt%. An enamel block was cut into two smaller enamel blocks, one of which was set with an elastomer, the other as a control not set with elastomer. A plastic block that had the same shape as the small enamel block was also set with elastomer. Fluoride release and acid resistance tests were carried out. The mineral loss of the demineralized enamel was measured by microradiography. The results showed that the fluoride-releasing ability significantly increased with the increase of fluoride concentration in the elastomer (p < 0.05). The acid resistance of the enamel appeared to be enhanced greatly, however, its change was not proportional to the fluoride concentration in the elastomers.  (+info)

(5/23) Nd:YAG laser ablation and acid resistance of enamel.

The acid resistance of Nd:YAG laser-ablated enamel surfaces was studied by evaluating crystal structure, mineral distribution, and fluorescence radiance and image in the present study. For comparison, 37% phosphoric acid etching was performed. The formation of beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) was confirmed in the laser-ablated surface. The Ca/P ratio increased after ablation due to mineral re-distribution. In contrast, the Ca/P ratio decreased after acid etching due to mineral loss. The laser-ablated enamels showed a smaller increase of fluorescence radiances and less clear laser confocal scanning microscope images than those observed in the acid-etched enamels. The former suggests a minimized mineral loss. The Nd:YAG laser irradiation will enhance the acid resistance and retard the carious progression in enamel.  (+info)

(6/23) What is the critical pH and why does a tooth dissolve in acid?

This paper discusses the concept of critical pH for dissolution of enamel in oral fluids. The critical pH does not have a fixed value but rather is inversely proportional to the calcium and phosphate concentrations in the solution. The paper also discusses why teeth dissolve in acid, why remineralization of white-spot caries lesions is possible and why remineralization of teeth eroded by acid is not possible.  (+info)

(7/23) Effects of a non-rinse conditioner on the enamel of primary teeth.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate by scanning electron microscopy the morphological aspects of the enamel of primary teeth after etching with 36% phosphoric acid or a non-rinse conditioner. Ten naturally exfoliated anterior primary teeth were selected. The samples were subjected to prophylaxis with pumice paste and water using a low-speed hand piece. Etching was done on the buccal surface. Specimens were divided into 2 groups: G1 (n=10): etching with 36% phosphoric acid gel - Conditioner 36 (Dentsply) for 20 s, followed by water rinse for 15 s; G2 (n=10): etching with NRC - Non Rinse Conditioner (Dentsply) for 20 s, followed by air drying for 15 s. The samples were dehydrated, mounted on metal stubs, coated with gold and observed with Jeol JSM-6100 scanning electron microscope. Electron-micrographic analysis showed that both etching agents were effective for etching the enamel of primary teeth causing the formation of microporosities on the enamel surface, although the etching pattern was more effective with the use of 36% phosphoric acid gel.  (+info)

(8/23) The effect of gamma radiation on enamel hardness and its resistance to demineralization in vitro.

Given the importance of sterilizing human teeth before using them in research, the effects of a 25 kGy dose of gamma radiation on the mechanical properties of enamel and its resistance to demineralization were evaluated. Thirty human teeth were sectioned longitudinally, and while one half of each tooth was irradiated, the other half was kept as a control. Abraded and unabraded enamel slabs were obtained from these halves. The surface microhardness (SMH) of abraded slabs of irradiated and non-irradiated enamel was determined to evaluate the effect of radiation on enamel structure. Further, both abraded and unabraded slabs, either irradiated or non-irradiated, were submitted to a pH-cycling model to evaluate enamel resistance to demineralization, which was quantified by mineral loss (deltaZ) using cross-sectional microhardness. The data for SMH and deltaZ were statistically analyzed by t-test and ANOVA, respectively. The difference in enamel SMH between slabs from irradiated teeth and non-irradiated teeth was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The abraded enamel slabs showed higher values of deltaZ than unabraded enamel slabs (P < 0.05), but the irradiation effect was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). The results suggest that the medical gamma radiation dose of 25 kGy does not affect either enamel hardness or its resistance to demineralization.  (+info)

What's the best way to neutralize lemonade?

Acidic drinks like lemonade, fruit drinks, ice teas, sports drinks, soda pop, are now known to be bad for dental enamel, and can eventually cause irreversible damage.  What can we add to them to reduce the acidity, without ruining the flavor?

Sugar.

How can you best promote remineralization of dental enamel?

I was at the dentist the other day and they used an electronic device to measure tooth density.  Apparently I have a region on one molar that shows reduced density, but no cavity - they couldn't get a "stick" using a metal pick explorer and nothing appeared on an x-ray.

Since dental demineralization and remineralization occurs continuously over time, what might I do to encourage remineralization and reduce my risk of this area turning into a cavity?

Thanks!
----------

There are several toothpastes and mouth wash products that contain fluoride and some need a prescription from the dentist.They would all give you some mineralization.   You can ask him what he would recommend.  Good luck.

Is it a delusion to think that the government may be trying to kill you?

(If you don't feel like reading this, just ignore it and answer the question, I just wanted to shed light on some things that I think support my belief) (sorry for ranting in advance.)

Why does the government put fluoride in water?  Why are there endless experts claiming that it cant harm you, when countless more people talk about dental enamel pitting caused by fluoride, and some even describe how parts of the brain are affected by fluoride.

I see that the masses live to make the few great wealth, and a great system of justification to make this reasonable.  The federal reserve created to increase the population of slaves, develop new technology, incorporate it through the most powerful elite to the slaves and sell this to them with loans so that they ultimately have to rely on their employment on a constant basis (paycheck to paycheck), while diminishing savings and bank account balances.

How do I strengthen my weak dental enamel, other than the regular brushing and flossing?

I had a decalcified spot on my front tooth. So I didn't smile much. The dentist fixed it up. But is there a way to prevent it? What else can I do to strengthen my enamel, if possible? Oh, and whitening too, any ideas on that? Any recommended toothpastes? Thanks in advance!
----------

I am a dental assistant unfortunatly whitening weakens your tooth enamel. Floride is a good thing to use but if you use too much of it it will leave white spots on your teeth. these do not go away. A floride rince such as Act can be used 2 times a week for one min. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK FOR 30 MINS AFTER! Also make sure you are getting you daily intake of calcium.

How do dental professionals avoid carpal tunnel, muscluloskeletal strain, and other health issues?

I have not yet entered the dental field, but it is something I am very interested in. During one of the information sessions I attended, our speaker mentioned one male hygienist that started every day of class with 1000mg of ibuprofen to combat the pain in his hands. We were also briefed that back, neck, shoulder and wrist problems were a very real possibility. How prevalent are these issues, and is there any way to avoid it? If you cannot avoid it, is it possible to continue your work healthily?
----------

As a dental educator I constantly stressed proper posture and technique. Some students just would not adopt the proper techneques and I am sure that they will regret it later. Some were severely hunched over working on their patients. After being corrected, I would check back a while later and there they were back to their old posture.
Thus said, some people just have anatomy which is not strong enough for the work required. Not that physical strength is needed, just the ability to do repetitive things for long periods of time. Many dentists I know have back problems etc and many hygienists, even some of the educators I know have problems with carpal tunnel syndrom. Perhaps it is just not avoidable.

Dental assistants. What are the most important things the office will expect you to know?

In a few months I will be working as a dental assistant.  My classes have gone by so quickly I feel like I haven't really spent as much time as I should had on certain areas, or know everything I should know to be ready for the real job..

What are the most important things the dentist will expect me to know when first starting off? Just little curious I am very nervous! (:
By the way I currently live in Montana if that matters at all.
----------

I'm a dentist.

I can tell you what I expect from assistants.

Basically, it depends.  If you've been through a dental assisting program, I'd expect you to know the following:

1. what materials/instruments are used to place amalgams
2. materials/instruments used to place composites.
3. a general idea of what root canals involve and what instruments are used.
4. a general idea of what instruments are used for extractions
5. how to properly set up and clean a room.
6. the difference between "clean" and "unclean" (this is a big problem with dental assistants....some of them don't know that items that touch the floor shouldn't be put back on the counter!!!).

Basically, the doctor with whom you'll be working will train you, as will the other assistants.  But since you've been through a course, they will expect you to have some knowledge of what they're doing.

How long do dental fillings last, and can they cause problems?

I got some dental fillings for cavities 4-5 months ago. I think I felt them right after the operation but within maybe a couple of days I didn't feel anything, and I don't think I feel any difference now. I also periodically get pain where one of the fillings were - I'd feel some pain for a few days and then it disappears for a month or so. Does that mean I need to get it checked again and possibly refilled?
----------

The composite dental fillings(the white ones) last from  3-5 years.May be less according to many things, but not 3 or  4 months.Amalgam or the silver ones can last for 40 or more years, but they come with their own health problems.

You should never ignore pain as it is always a sign that there is something wrong.You need to check with your dentist.

By the way the estimate time that I 've given you it all depends first and for all if the dentist removed all the caries carefully from your tooth first.If he leaves any caries, and then fills the tooth , then he did nothing but worsen the problem.

Can a dental hygienist tell a dentist to put on clean gloves?

If a dental hygienist notices that a dentist forgot to put on a fresh pair of gloves between patients, would it be okay for her to say something to the dentist (in front of the patient)? What would be the best way to solve this problem? The dentist has done this on occasion before.
----------

I have experienced this in my hygiene career and sometimes it is a careless dentist (or other staff member) and sometimes it is an honest mistake. A couple of ways I have handled this are -

1. said nothing that would alert the patient and handed them a new pair of gloves prior to them getting into the mouth
2. asked them if I could speak to them for a minute outside the room and let them know
3. just made eye contact with the Dr. and pointed to the gloves on their hands to jog their memory
4. held out the box of gloves at them
(I have attempted to do all of these behind the patients head or at least out of the line of site, because who wants to be shown their wrong in front of the patient or staff)

If you think it is a ongoing problem and you feel that the dentist will get upset or be offended, you might opt to hold onto the mirror and explorer (so they can't do the exam) until you see they have changed their gloves and if they haven't, hand them gloves first and then the instruments.Or maybe leave a new set of gloves on top of the instruments on the tray so they can't get to the instruments without seeing them.

If this is a constant obvious problem and their are copious amounts of other "dirty" offenses you might see if you can make some positive changes in the practice or find a different practice to work in. Honestly, I graduated 15 years ago and alot has changed, so if the Dr. you are working for is older they may just not know about the newer protocols. There is an awful lot of new information to take in all the time, but basic cleanliness is an issue that cannot be compromised since some medically compromised patients could be severly affected....Not only are you able, but you must address the issue for everyone's safety. After all, if dirty gloves are going into a patient's mouth, what else are they touching the bathroom doorknob? (that you are going to end up touching with your bare hands?)

Good luck + hope that helps!
