A worldwide campaign can lose that valuable focus using a cumbersome 'blanket' attack on the mass audience, like the vehicle advertisements for Chair in Europe being quite uniform and non-country specific. The consumer focus could be lost through the confusion and insufficient creative consistency with a few of the huge agency systems that cope with global solutions. 5 lessons learned from a year living in a foreign country. Posted by Jessica. 10 comments. Today was my final day in Japan. By the time you read this, I would have probably already landed in Hong Kong, ready for my next adventure. It’s been almost a year of culture shock, ups and downs, exploring, learning, having fun and so much more. I’m grateful for how much I’ve discovered about myself, other people and about hard work, kindness and life itself. It’s hard to whittle down an entire life experience into a few lessons, but I’ll try my best. However, almost everything I learned doesn’t only apply to living in another country – but can also apply to anything you want to do. 1 Enjoy the honeymoon. When you first arrive in a foreign country, everything is like a dream. You’re whisked here and there, taken to admire the cultural diversity, eat great food and talk to people who are always nice to you because they want to make a good impression. At the same time as being in a daze, your senses are on high alert a...

The exam -- which is designed for placement and evaluation, not admissions -- has been in a testing period with a small group of colleges. Terry Egan, project manager for the test for ETS, said that the exam grew out of a sense among educators that there is more than a digital divide, but a proficiency divide in which students have access to technology, but don t know how to use it. The test was originally envisioned as one that colleges might give rising juniors, but ETS is now exploring the possibility of offering multiple versions of the test: a short version that might be given to entering freshmen and a longer version for later in students college careers. The questions on the short version would take three to four minutes each to complete, and would test students ability at using e-mail technology, downloading attachments, combining different technology forms in e-ma...

Prosecutor objects to drug treatment sentence for Burns., Tribune Chronicle. WARREN - An assistant county prosecutor says Jason Burns' comparison likening drug abuse to cancer or diabetes is ludicrous. Assistant county prosecutor Michael Burnett also says he's not about to recommend that the 33-year-old former legal assistant for the city of Warren be deemed eligible for drug treatment instead of a drug conviction. Warren police arrested Burns and said different types of drugs and paraphernalia were found on him Dec. ' Burns also likens continued drug abuse to cancer and diabetes, and he believes that the city of Warren should have sensitivity training about the disease of addiction. Bluedorn noted that a program in which Burns was involved in California was nothing more than a court diversion program and nothing close to a rehab program that is normally required for the cou...

She was reluctant to proceed with the more invasive therapy, but didn t really like the prospect of life-long drug therapy either. She sought a second opinion, and returned, deciding that the risk of the procedure outweighed the prospect of drugs, and she liked the prospect of having her procedure closer to home. The day of her procedure was like any other. Jones. Jones. I asked. She had lunch before she left, and as we headed home, she asked if we could stop and buy some groceries. If there was any chance at real health care reform, it was going to start with restricting direct-to-consumer DTC advertising from the pharmaceutical industry. We need such advertising for pharmaceutical companies, they argued, to assure effective monitoring of DTC ads to assure patient safety. Hey guys and gals, if we didn't have the ads in the first place, they wouldn't have to be monitored, would they. Real health care reform doesn't stand a fricking chance as long as our elected officials and this includes every one of our comb-over presidential candidates don't take their job seriously and start to vote on behalf of America's best interest, instead of their own. The rate of human papillomavirus infection has risen substantially among white Americans during the past couple of generations, with survival rates worse for African Americans. A quickly rising incidence of throat and mouth cancers among young American adults may be caused by the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus HPV. government health data shows that cancers of the base of the tongue, tonsils, soft palate, and pharynx rose by 60 percent among adults 45 years of age and younger during the past couple of generations. These oropharyngeal cancers struck increasingly more Americans during their vital years between 1973 and 2009, according t...

... The 'Proto-Greek language' is the assumed last common ancestor of all known varieties of Greek, including Mycenaean, the classical Greek dialects Attic - Ionic, Aeolic, Doric and Arcado-Cypriot, and ultimately Koine, Byzantine and modern Greek. Other Post-Proto-Greek changes. Proto-Greek changes. Vocalization of laryngeals between consonants and initially before consonants to /e/, /a/, /o/ from h₁, h₂, h₃ respectively unlike all other Indo-European languages. For example PIE '*h₁éḱwos' > PG '*íkkʷos' > Mycenaean 'i-qo', Attic 'híppos', Aeolic 'íkkos'. Most Indo-European languages can be traced back to a dialectal variety of late Proto-Indo-European PIE where all three laryngeals had merged after coloring adjacent short /e/ vowels but Greek clearly cannot. All other Indo-European languages reflect the same vowel from all three laryngeals usually /a/, but /i/ or other vowels in Indo-Iranian. Other Indo-European languages again have the same reflex for all three laryngeals, e.g. Cf. This change appears to b...

ZEN AND CULTURAL EVOLUTION. As a quest for the understanding of meaning, Zen suggests that the only real and dependable answers to this dilemma will derive from our own direct experience, rather than speculation of a conceptual nature. We claim that it is the essential practice of buddhas and ancestors, the central process by which Shakyamuni Buddha came to enter into realization. In Zen Buddhism, we regard Buddha’s transformational insight as the apex of evolution of the human mind. But we emphasize that the nature of the mind realized by Buddha was at one and the same time the same mind that Buddha was born with, and yet had fundamentally changed in the process of realization. When mind and object merge in realization, the long-lost, original nature of mind is recovered. To teach this to others, as Shakyamuni decided to attempt...

*  The Indian Heritage: The Myth of the Aryan Invasion Theory
... skip to main. skip to sidebar. Meditation Musics. Thursday, September 2, 2010. The Myth of the Aryan Invasion Theory. LORD MACAULAY'S ADDRESS TO THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT, 2 FEBRUARY, 1835. The Myth of the Aryan Invasion Theory By. Shyam Narayan Shukla, Ph.D. Before mid-nineteenth century no one had heard of Aryans coming to India from out side. One had also not heard that foreign people of Aryan race invaded India, conquered the indigenous people of Dravidian race and pushed them to southern part of India. However, now all this is part of the Indian history written by the British rulers of India. Europeans were exposed to Sanskrit and the Hindu scriptures sometime in the seventeenth century. They discovered that Sanskrit and the European languages had many common words. Thus the western scholars arrived at a conclusion that the Indo-European languages must have had a common origin. Their hypothesis was that from Central Asia a section of Sanskrit speaking Aryans came to India and another section of the sam...

Proto-Greek language: The Proto-Greek language is the assumed last common ancestor of all known varieties of Greek, including Mycenaean, the classical Greek dialects (Attic-Ionic, Aeolic, Doric and Arcado-Cypriot), and ultimately Koine, Byzantine and modern Greek. The unity of Proto-Greek would have ended as Hellenic migrants, speaking the predecessor of the Mycenaean language, entered the Greek peninsula sometime in the Neolithic era or the Bronze Age.Business Model of Intercultural Analysis: The Business Model of Intercultural Analysis (BMIA) is a tool developed to address cross-cultural problems. The BMIA framework uses six comprehension lenses to analyze cross-cultural interaction in the business environment.General Medicine Faculty of RostGMU (Rostov State Medical University): Rostov State Medical University, Faculty of General Medicine - Located in Rostov city center with 20 departments, each departments has its own clinics with numbers of beds.Model risk: In finance, model risk is the risk of loss resulting from using models to make decisions, initially and frequently referring to valuing financial securities. (1/655) How physician executives and clinicians perceive ethical issues in Saudi Arabian hospitals.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the perceptions of physician executives and clinicians regarding ethical issues in Saudi Arabian hospitals and the attributes that might lead to the existence of these ethical issues. DESIGN: Self-completion questionnaire administered from February to July 1997. SETTING: Different health regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. PARTICIPANTS: Random sample of 457 physicians (317 clinicians and 140 physician executives) from several hospitals in various regions across the kingdom. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in the perceptions of physician executives and clinicians regarding the existence of various ethical issues in their hospitals. The vast majority of physician executives did not perceive that seven of the eight issues addressed by the study were ethical concerns in their hospitals. However, the majority of the clinicians perceived that six of the same eight issues were ethical considerations in their hospitals. Statistically significant differences in the perceptions of physician executives and clinicians were observed in only three out of eight attributes that might possibly lead to the existence of ethical issues. The most significant attribute that was perceived to result in ethical issues was that of hospitals having a multinational staff. CONCLUSION: The study calls for the formulation of a code of ethics that will address specifically the physicians who work in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As a more immediate initiative, it is recommended that seminars and workshops be conducted to provide physicians with an opportunity to discuss the ethical dilemmas they face in their medical practice.  (+info)

(2/655) Can we learn from eugenics?

Eugenics casts a long shadow over contemporary genetics. Any measure, whether in clinical genetics or biotechnology, which is suspected of eugenic intent is likely to be opposed on that ground. Yet there is little consensus on what this word signifies, and often only a remote connection to the very complex set of social movements which took that name. After a brief historical summary of eugenics, this essay attempts to locate any wrongs inherent in eugenic doctrines. Four candidates are examined and rejected. The moral challenge posed by eugenics for genetics in our own time, I argue, is to achieve social justice.  (+info)

(3/655) Indigenous peoples and the morality of the Human Genome Diversity Project.

In addition to the aim of mapping and sequencing one human's genome, the Human Genome Project also intends to characterise the genetic diversity of the world's peoples. The Human Genome Diversity Project raises political, economic and ethical issues. These intersect clearly when the genomes under study are those of indigenous peoples who are already subject to serious economic, legal and/or social disadvantage and discrimination. The fact that some individuals associated with the project have made dismissive comments about indigenous peoples has confused rather than illuminated the deeper issues involved, as well as causing much antagonism among indigenous peoples. There are more serious ethical issues raised by the project for all geneticists, including those who are sympathetic to the problems of indigenous peoples. With particular attention to the history and attitudes of Australian indigenous peoples, we argue that the Human Genome Diversity Project can only proceed if those who further its objectives simultaneously: respect the cultural beliefs of indigenous peoples; publicly support the efforts of indigenous peoples to achieve respect and equality; express respect by a rigorous understanding of the meaning of equitable negotiation of consent, and ensure that both immediate and long term economic benefits from the research flow back to the groups taking part.  (+info)

(4/655) Protective truthfulness: the Chinese way of safeguarding patients in informed treatment decisions.

The first part of this paper examines the practice of informed treatment decisions in the protective medical system in China today. The second part examines how health care professionals in China perceive and carry out their responsibilities when relaying information to vulnerable patients, based on the findings of an empirical study that I had undertaken to examine the moral experience of nurses in practice situations. In the Chinese medical ethics tradition, refinement [jing] in skills and sincerity [cheng] in relating to patients are two cardinal virtues that health care professionals are required to possess. This notion of absolute sincerity carries a strong sense of parental protectiveness. The empirical findings reveal that most nurses are ambivalent about telling the truth to patients. Truth-telling would become an insincere act if a patient were to lose hope and confidence in life after learning of his or her disease. In this system of protective medical care, it is arguable as to whose interests are being protected: the patient, the family or the hospital. I would suggest that the interests of the hospital and the family members who legitimately represent the patient's interests are being honoured, but at the expense of the patient's right to know.  (+info)

(5/655) Research, ethics and conflicts of interest.

In this paper, I have tried to develop a critique of committee procedures and conflict of interest within research advisory committees and ethical review committees (ERCs). There are specific features of conflict of interest in medical research. Scientists, communities and the subjects of research all have legitimate stakeholdings. The interests of medical scientists are particularly complex, since they are justified by the moral and physical welfare of their research subjects, while the reputations and incomes of scientists depend on the success of their science. Tensions of this kind must at times produce conflict of interest. It is important to recognise that conflicts of interest may unwittingly lead to manipulation of research subjects and their lay representatives on research committees. It is equally important to recognise distinctions between the legal and moral aspects of conflict of interest. Some practical suggestions are made which may go some way towards resolving these difficulties. They indicate what might be needed to ensure the validity of ethical discourse, and to reduce the risks associated with conflict of interest.  (+info)

(6/655) Defending diversity: affirmative action and medical education.

Affirmative action programs of all types are under attack legally and politically. Although medical schools have not been specifically targeted, their affirmative action programs, like others in higher education, are potentially in danger. This article examines the current legal status of affirmative action in medical education and concludes that a refurbished defense of such programs is essential if they are to survive impending judicial and political scrutiny. An analysis of existing case law and available evidence suggests that a carefully reinvigorated diversity argument is the tactic most likely to pass constitutional muster, as well as the justification most likely to blunt growing public and political opposition to admissions policies that take race and ethnicity into consideration.  (+info)

(7/655) Family consent, communication, and advance directives for cancer disclosure: a Japanese case and discussion.

The dilemma of whether and how to disclose a diagnosis of cancer or of any other terminal illness continues to be a subject of worldwide interest. We present the case of a 62-year-old Japanese woman afflicted with advanced gall bladder cancer who had previously expressed a preference not to be told a diagnosis of cancer. The treating physician revealed the diagnosis to the family first, and then told the patient: "You don't have any cancer yet, but if we don't treat you, it will progress to a cancer". In our analysis, we examine the role of family consent, communication patterns (including ambiguous disclosure), and advance directives for cancer disclosure in Japan. Finally, we explore the implications for Edmund Pellegrino's proposal of "something close to autonomy" as a universal good.  (+info)

(8/655) Interpersonal processes of care in diverse populations.

Persons of lower socioeconomic status and members of racial and ethnic minority groups experience poorer health and increased health risk factors. A framework of interpersonal processes of care specifies distinct components and incorporates the perspective of diverse racial and ethnic or socioeconomic groups. Its dimensions, each with several domains, are communication (general clarity, elicitation of and responsiveness to patient concerns, explanations, empowerment), decision making (responsiveness to patient preferences, consideration of ability and desire to comply), and interpersonal style (friendliness, respectfulness, discrimination, cultural sensitivity, support). All the domains, except cultural sensitivity, were validated through a survey of 603 ethnically diverse, low-income adults. Confirmation of the framework's usefulness should enable researchers to explore how interpersonal processes might account for observed ethnic and social class differences in health care and health.  (+info)

What do preschool children eat for breakfast in other countries?

I am trying to convince the school district that there is not a cultural diversity in the breakfast menu because french toast and english muffins do not count. Please give me some cheap ideas that I could present to this board. And yes I know McDonald's is international but that is not what I am looking for. I am looking for *traditional breakfast items*
Thank you :-)
----------

Cereal, fruit and toast is what I was brought up on, with an occasional poached egg.

I don't think pre-schoolers really need cultural diversity; they should still be finding normal food pretty exotic!

How are you planning to teach your child tolerance?

One thing I notice about our culture that is still going on is racial and religious intolerance. How are planning to teach your child to be acceptance of other people's belief and cultural diversity? Or are you so set in your own belief that it might be difficult to do it.
I didn't want to get into sexual identity tolerance since that is more of a sensitive subject for some.
I'm not here to judge anyone on your principal. All opinion and belief are personal. So not going to TUs or TDs anyone.
----------

We are a bi-racial family, so hopefully we should not have to deal with our children being racially intolerant. I do understand that there are many other races out there, and we will explain that it is not fair to judge someone based on physical appearance. I can simply point out that we all look different in our family.

Our extended family also has members who have different mental capablities, and hopefully that will help my children to understand that everyone is different.

In regards to religion, my family has the idea that you can have a relationship with God without going to church. In my husband's family there are dedicated church members and go to service at least twice a week. While they are young we will simply tell them that different people have different beliefs, and that is ok. Just like Johnny's favorite color is green and Susan's is pink, and that is ok. As they get older I think it is important that they learn about other cultures and religions. One of the most enlightening courses I took was on world religions, and I think it would benefit my children to at least have a brief idea of what and where other religious beliefs come from.

Regarding sexual identity, our families have different beliefs. I hope my children will be wise enough to leave others alone if they are not harming anyone. I do not feel like it is my place to tell anyone what they can or cannot do.

Does anyone have any good Mexican recipes?

For my cultural diversity class we are have a potluck and we are suppost to bring in mexican food.. Does any one have any good ideas for recipes?
----------

I would say bring in tamales but, if this is something you have to make yourself then, it would be too ambitious and time consuming.

I could give you recipes but, for this purpose I am going to direct you to the link below. It has the history of the food as well as authentic recipes.

What cultural baby items would you like to see more readily on the market?

I am opening a multi-cultural baby store in the near future and I am trying to get an idea of what other mums would find useful. I have a mixed race child and I found it practically impossible to find books, clothes and toys to suit. Everything was 'white' based. I wanted her to have a range of books some with children from different cultures in and baby clothes from Africa, everything was available but after hunting long and hard. What items would you like to see on the market more readily and do you think it's a good idea?
----------

Mothers in other countries use carriers to keep their babies close to them all day. In South Korea, they use something called a podaegi, it's like a tied wrap carrier they wear on their backs so they can keep the baby close while still going about their daily lives. It keeps the babies soothed, but let's the mom have free range of her arms.
They have the Baby Bjorn carriers and such here, but they're just not the same as carriers used in other countries. They don't give you the full range of movement.

How does cultural diversity affect nursing care of older adults?

Registered nurses, especially in my state of California, are surrended by an ever growing population of different cultures. I am a nursing student and I need your opinions, thanks!
----------

Without going into specific cultures there are many differences.  Some cultures regard their elders with a great deal of respect and are very (sometimes overly) involved with their care.  Others sit quietly in the room and follow their religious beliefs by prayer. They may never say a word to you.  Some families believe they need to bring in their own dietary restrictions on foods and that those foods have "healing powers".  Some believe using special oils on the patient will help.  Some believe in having certain objects with the patient at all times.  Some use smells to  enhance healing and bring in something we might not like. Some speak little English and a 5 year old might be the translator. Some may wear a special garment of clothing that cannot be taken off.   As an RN you need to allow the family to abide by their wishes unless it is harmful to the patient or caregivers.  Sometimes this can be difficult and need to be handled with care so as to not offend the family (or patient). The clothing garment probably needs to be removed but if given to the family and stays in the room the family will usually be happy.  Regardless of culture everyone of us wants what is best for our family and the patient.  As a nurse we need to respect that.  Good luck in school.  Its hard work but worth it!

What is the easiest cultural clothes of a country to make from recycled material?

It's a project. I need an idea of what cultural clothe I'm gonna make from recycled material. If you could please give tell me an easy clothe to make and the materials I'm gonna need.
----------

You can try creating a Romanian traditional costume for women. I made it and it was really easy to make. (Actually I made lots of clothes from recycled materials).
Here you have a picture for it http://www.flickr.com/photos/24646726@N08/3620272405/
It's easy to make because all you need is white garbage bags, orange and red mesh sack http://talen79.en.made-in-china.com/product/coXEzLZUHarq/China-PE-Raschel-Mesh-Bag.html and some beads.
For the upper part you use the white garbage bags and you make a long sleeve shirt and you staple it, you don't saw it(easier to staple) and than you can add 4 rows of beads in front (black and orange or black and red).
For the bottom you just take a red mesh sack and an orange one and overlap them so they will fit you like in the picture. Than you make like a little belt out of some sack material and there you go, you can have a costume like in the picture.
If you need more info let me know.

Good luck!
