July 15, 2011 Novel DNA sequencer for MDC's systems biology July 15, 2011 The Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology BIMSB of the Max Delbr ck Center for Molecular Medicine MDC in Berlin, Germany, will be the first academic research institution in Continental Europe to acquire a novel DNA sequencer enabling the sequencing of single DNA molecules in real time. The SMRT single molecule, real-time technology is also faster than current high-throughput technologies. To develop the "single molecule real-time" SMRT technology, Pacific Biosciences has combined nanotechnology, biochemistry, surface chemistry and optics. The new sequencer determines DNA sequences in real time by visualizing the reaction of a single enzyme with a single DNA molecule. However, the appearance and expansion of the snail Melanoides tuberculata since August 1997, with the concomitant reduction of the population of B. glabrata suggest that competitive exclusion might be taking place. Depending on the susceptibility of the thiarid to the E. splendens toxin, the natural control that is occurring could be interrupted by the employment of the latex if the planorbid were less susceptible to the toxin. The aim of this study is to investigate the molluscicidal activity of the latex on M. tuberculata. We used 420 M. tuberculata, from Sumidouro. Fourteen different latex concentrations were tested using World Health Organization general methodology. Probit analysis was used for LD90 and LD50 determination. The LD50 was 3.57 mg/l and LD90 was 6.22 mg/l. At the highest concentration (10 mg/l) there was no survival. No significant differences among replicas (chi2 = 8.31; gl = 13; p > 0.05) were found. The LD90 dose for M. tuberculata was 13.8 times greater than that for B. glabrata, so that the molluscicide in the presence of the thiarid may have a synergic effect on reduction of Biomphalaria populations.  (+info)

This interpenetration involves different levels of interactions between the partners including trophic exchanges, bi-directional cell signaling and gene activation, besides genetic and epigenetic phenomena, and tends towards mutual adaptation and coevolution. Since these processes are critical for the survival of individuals and species, they rely on the existence of a complex organization of adaptive systems aiming at two apparently conflicting purposes: the maintenance of the internal coherence of each partner, and a mutually advantageous coexistence and progressive adaptation between them. Humans possess three adaptive systems: the nervous, the endocrine and the immune system, each internally organized into subsystems functionally connected by intraconnections, to maintain the internal coherence of the system. The three adaptive systems aim at the maintenance of the internal coherence of the organism and are functionally linked by interconnections, in such way that what happens to one is immediately sensed by the others. The different communities of infectious agents that live within the organism are also organized into functional networks. The members of each community are linked by intraconnections, represented by the mutual trophic, metabolic and other influences, while the different infectious communities affect each other through interconnections. Furthermore, by means of its adaptive systems, the organism influences and is influenced by the microbial communities through the existence of transconnections. It is proposed that these highly complex and dynamic networks, involving gene exchange and epigenetic phenomena, represent major coevolutionary forces for humans and microorganisms.  (+info)

I seen a mating dog couple with there genitals intertwined & another male dog wanting to join the pair.Why it?


is with dogs that they never get separated quickly after intercourse?

in a wild forest, such pair may be an easy pray for a meat eating beast & the weaker of the pair get caught & assaulted due there bonding.

Why nature is so strange when it comes with mating of dogs?do there are other organisms that also stick to each other for a while after mating?

After all there safety is in danger due to such biological phenomenon .

with dogs, they live in packs, so the danger of a mating pair being attacked by an enemy is small.  
Mating dogs often get "stuck" together (the female's vagina tightens and prevents the male from withdrawing, which facilitates fertilization).  As far as I know, this is predominantly only in dogs, however it can occur in other animals (including people) by accident.  
As for a second male wanting to join in, that's a common thing in all creatures with the desire and opportunity to mate, especially if the mating pair is not the alpha male/female.

They can't get separated easily because the male genitals knot up inside the female genitals in order to promote success of fertilization. In a wild forest, if there are any wild dogs they'd be traveling in a pack so if two of them decided to mate they'd have other pack members to back them up in case of predators.

Oops.. read that question wrong. 

I'm not sure there really is a medical term for testicles "dropping." The reason they call it dropping is because they descend from the abdominal area into holes in the stomach and fall into the scrotum shortly after birth. They basically start where a woman's ovaries are.

There are several reasons to spicing up food.
1. In hot climates spice is added to make a person sweat.  As perspiration comes to the skin surface any breeze evaporates the moisture making the skin cool off.  Sort of like air conditioning for the body.

2. As people age the taste buds begin to dull.  Because of this we need more and more spice to taste the foods that we have grown used to.

So I guess the answer is both biological and evolutionary.

Entoptic phenomena usually refers to one being able to visualise white blood cells in the retinal blood vessels. The entoptic phenomenon is distinguished by the appearance of multiple, identical-looking bright dots that follow each other rapidly along the same path.

Is it hard to petition the courts in Ohio to obtain my biological brother's information?


I am considering petitioning the courts in Ohio to get any information on my biological brother (who was given up for adoption). He is of age, he just turned 22 this year. I wanted to know if anyone ever petition the courts in Ohio? If so, was the processing challenging? How long did it take to finally go to court? If you did receive information, how long did it take for you to get it from the courts?

I don't know about Ohio specifically, but I do know that in most states the courts will only allow you to get identifying information on an adoptee if you have a compelling reason (i.e. medical condition that requires donation from a biological relative, need to notify him of genetic condition, etc.).  Without a compelling reason, the courts are unlikely to order his identity be revealed because it would violate his right to privacy.  You may be able to get the adoption agency to act as a go between and ask him if he would consent to his contact information being given to you (assuming they know how to locate him).  Or check the adoption reunion registries to see if he has registered as an adoptee who wants to be contacted by birth relatives.

I am curious about who the baby's biological mother is in the case of a surrogate pregnancy? Or does it work both ways--does the couple provide both the egg and the sperm of themselves or does the husband typically provide his sperm and the surrogate's egg is used?

The biological mother is whomever the egg was from. Sometimes it's the surrogate mother, sometimes it's an anonymous donor, and sometimes it is the mother that will take over guardianship/assume the responsibilities of raising the child. The same is true with whom the biological father is. It could be his or it could be a donor's.
