But overall, when caring for dementia patients, you will see certain types of behavior problems. Most importantly though, these techniques will help you observe and manage patient behaviors as they change over time and will allow you to adapt and change your interactions for the best results. All of these behaviors can pose serious difficulties for the person trying to provide care. While a behavior might result from an emotion, this section will not be exclusively concerned with emotions, but will concentrate on behavior, or on what you see happening. Why work with behaviors. There’s definitely no shortage of both beautiful and terrible iWatch concepts these days. At this point, it’s all but certain that Apple’s been cooking up some kind of a wearable device. That said, I don’t think the iWatch will be a smartwatch at all. Needles to say, this isn’t stopping 3D artists from dreaming up the ultimate wrist-worn smartwatch with the Apple logo on it. But as gorgeous as some iWatch renderings are, their envisioned interfaces are classic examples of form over function. Although I don’t see myself wearing any kind of wristwatch, earlier today I stumbled upon a fresh batch of stylish concept images by the talented Hungarian designer Gábor Balogh that could easily have me change my mind as to what a smartwatch should actually be…. Balogh, who posted his iWatch concept on Bēhance, explains that his design follows the basic principles of keeping t...

July 10, 2009 in Updates. My friends, I just can’t tell you how good I feel. After an extended illness or period of discomfort, feeling neutral, or even a little healthy, feels so, so good. So good. So very good. I appreciate the not-sick so, so much. Yesterday included a stop at the transplant clinic, where I learned that my white count is a little low, my red count is still low but moving in the right direction, and that I have platelets to spare. All is well. I was dismissed until my next visit, the all-important 30-day checkup, after which all of my infection and behavior controls are lifted, and I am officially discharged from the transplant program. Life I love you. I am still tired, but I’m getting a handle on the ebb and flow of energy through the day. And I’m doing a lot…today, for example, I got up with the kids and got them fed, dressed and dropped at Sewusen’s. I went to the farmer’s market for the first tomatoes of the season although, they don’t have that intoxicating scent yet…might be ...

Many dog owners misread their dog’s communication and label it as a nuisance, but what many owners don’t know is that dogs have developed this language to get along with their human or canine pack. Dog trainers will suggest to owners that teaching a cue, such as quiet, can turn their dogs barking into a positive behavior before it gets them in trouble with the entire neighborhood. When a dog is demanding attention, you never want to give in to him or it can turn him into a bossy canine who will run your life. Howling. Speculation has been the major engine driving the market. And that is the very essence of a speculative bubble: buyers paying higher and higher prices that are not related to the actual usefulness of the property, but rather based on the belief that prices will continue to rise. Warm Gun: How to Win Users & Influence Behavior. Warm Gun: How to Win Users & Influence Behavior. In his How to Win Users & Influence Behavior presentation at the Warm Gun Design conference in San Francisco, CA BJ Fogg walked through how behavior can be systematically understood and used for design. Behavior happens when motivation, ability, and triggers come together at the same time. What do you specifically what people to do. You can organize them by when people do stuff, when they don’t do stuff, that they know or don’t know how to do. Dot behaviors: one time behaviors. Span behaviors: behaviors that happen over a period of time and then stop. Path behaviors: things you will do from now on. The way to get people to do things from now on is different than how to get them to do something once. What will motivate people to do what you want. Tap an existing motivation people already have, don’t try to motivate people to do something they don’t want to already do. Understand what motivation already exists then...

So when researchers witness chimps playing peekaboo, they have a little more solid evidence of animals that don't just laugh but understand how to make others laugh. Crows are super crazy weird smart. And although it's hard to prove super crazy weird through science, researchers have at least been able to show that our onyx flying friends engage in super crazy weird smart behavior. iStockphoto/ Thinkstock. This one is tricky, because most animals do learn and thus can be taught certain behaviors or activities. An extraordinary study of animal behavior gave us a glimpse of how chimps react to the death of a friend. But enough sad news: let's take a look at some surprising ways animals have learned to survive. But several species of animals have more sophisticated -- or at least unusual -- behaviors when perceiving a threat. Dogs have also demo...

Chemical messengers thus determine the behavior of billions of individual neurons in the brain. In the Boyd laboratory, we analyze animal behaviors, identify the groups of neurons involved in controlling those behaviors, and discover the chemical messengers used for communication between the neurons....

Post navigation ← Previous. Next →. Family Meals for Kids’ Healthy Eating Habits Posted on. May 5, 2011. by. Mya. Did you sit down with your kids last night for dinner. If so, and if family meals are relatively normal in your house, that’s likely a good thing when it comes to your kids eating habits, suggests a new study published in Pediatrics. The study pooled data from 17 previous studies investigating family meals and nutrition, totaling approximately 183,000 children. Average ages ranged from 3 to 17. After analysis, the authors found that children and adolescents who ate with their family three or more times per week were more likely to be in a normal weight range and eat healthier – including eating fruits, vegetables and breakfast – than kids who shared fewer than 3 family meals together. Staying a healthy weight — and eating a healthy diet – are both important for cancer prevention. Children and adolescents who ate with their families regularly were 12 percent less likely to be overweight and 2...

NBER Working Paper No. 17081 Issued in May 2011 NBER Program s : CH ED HC HE LE LS PE. Risky health behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, drug use, unprotected sex, and poor diets and sedentary lifestyles leading to obesity are a major source of preventable deaths. This chapter overviews the theoretical frameworks for, and empirical evidence on, the economics of risky health behaviors. It describes traditional economic approaches emphasizing utility maximization that, under certain assumptions, result in Pareto-optimal outcomes and a limited role for policy interventions. It also details nontraditional models e.g. involving hyperbolic time discounting or bounded rationality that even without market imperfections can result in suboptimal outcomes for which government intervention has greater potential to increase social welfare. The chapter summarizes the literature on the conseq...

3 The health belief model suggests that people's beliefs about health problems, perceived benefits of action and barriers to action, and self-efficacy explain engagement or lack of engagement in health-promoting behavior. The health belief model predicts that individuals who perceive that they are susceptible to a particular health problem will engage in behaviors to reduce their risk of developing the health problem. Perceived benefits refer to an individual's assessment of the value or efficacy of engaging in a health-promoting behavior to decrease risk of disease. The health belief model suggests that modifying variables affect health-related behaviors indirectly by affecting perceived seriousness, susceptibility, benefits, and barriers. Self-efficacy was added to the four components of the health belief model i.e., perceived susceptibility, seriousness, benefits, and barriers in 1988. Interventions based on the health belief model may aim to increase perceived susceptibility to and perceived seriousness o...

If you’ve seen the recent viral video discouraging us from texting while driving, or the quit-smoking commercials that feature surgeries showing organs damaged by smoking, then you may find yourself wondering if these gruesome images actually cause us to change our behavior. Social psychologists have asked the same question and have found a variety of results. When considering the persuasiveness of a message we have to consider the message itself, the audience watching it, and the context in which it is delivered. Messages that have graphic images have been shown to be effective in producing behavior change, but only if there is a message attached to the images about what a person can do. For example, quit-smoking messages are more likely to produce a change in behavior if they are accompanied with information about smoking cessation programs or a phone number to call to get help...

Human Behavior. Health behaviour. Health behavior refers to a person's beliefs and actions regarding their health and well-being. Health behaviours are influenced by the social, cultural and physical environments in which we live and work. Positive behaviours help promote health and prevent disease, while the opposite is true for risk behaviours. Because of the time lag that often occurs between certain behaviours and the development of disease, these indicators may foreshadow the future burdens and benefits of health-risk and health-promoting behaviours. However, the adjusted activation scores indicate that after accounting for differences in health status, obesity and other characteristics, people with multiple chronic conditions tend to have higher activation scores compared with those with only a single chronic condition. For example, prior research has shown that higher l...

(1/130) Genetically determined obesity in Prader-Willi syndrome: the ethics and legality of treatment.

A central characteristic of people with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is an apparent insatiable appetite leading to severe overeating and the potential for marked obesity and associated serious health problems and premature death. This behaviour may be due to the effects of the genetic defect resulting from the chromosome 15 abnormalities associated with the syndrome. We examine the ethical and legal dilemmas that can arise in the care of people with PWS. A tension exists between a genetic deterministic perspective and that of individual choice. We conclude that the determination of the capacity of a person with PWS to make decisions about his/her eating behaviour and to control that behaviour is of particular importance in resolving this dilemma. If the person is found to lack capacity, the common law principles of acting in a person's "best interests" using the "least restrictive alternative" may be helpful. Allowing serious weight gain in the absence of careful consideration of these issues is an abdication of responsibility.  (+info)

(2/130) On becoming non-judgmental: some difficulties for an ethics of counselling.

The growth in the availability of counselling services has been accompanied by growing concern about the conduct of counsellors, which in turn has led to the expressed need for an ethics of counselling. This paper will argue that there is an inherent tension between this need and the central tenets of one variety of counselling, client-centred counselling. The tension is identifiable on the basis of an inquiry into the nature of moral judgment which results in the recognition of the implicit value base in client-centred counselling. It is only when this value base is made explicit that any adequate ethics of counselling becomes a viable possibility.  (+info)

(3/130) Are antipsychotic drugs the right treatment for challenging behaviour in learning disability?: The place of a randomised trial.

People with learning disability sometimes display challenging behaviour. This can be managed by use of antipsychotic medication or behavioural therapy or both. There is no solid evidence, however, that these therapies are safe and effective. A randomised controlled trial of antipsychotic medication has been proposed to deliver such evidence. However, this presents difficult issues in the ethics of research with learning disabled people. In particular, is a trial the most efficient and fairest way to evaluate practice in this area? This paper reviews the clinical situation, gives the rationale for the trial, and analyses the ethical arguments for and against such a trial.  (+info)

(4/130) Health promotion and the First Amendment: government control of the informational environment.

Government efforts to protect public health often include controlling health information. The government may proscribe messages conveyed by commercial entities (e.g., false or misleading), recommend messages from commercial entities (e.g., warnings and safety instructions), and convey health messages (e.g., health communication campaigns). Through well-developed, albeit evolving, case law, government control of private speech has been constrained to avoid impinging on such values as free expression, truthfulness, and autonomous decision making. No simple legal framework has been developed for the government's own health messages to mediate between the legitimate goals of health protection and these other values. Nevertheless, government recommendations on matters of health raise difficult social and ethical questions and involve important societal trade-offs. Accordingly, this article proposes legal and ethical principles relating to government control of the health information environment.  (+info)

(5/130) A novel skilled-reaching impairment in paw supination on the "good" side of the hemi-Parkinson rat improved with rehabilitation.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural abnormalities ascribed to the loss of nigrostriatal dopamine (DA). Symptoms similar to the human condition can be produced in the rat by DA-depleting 6-hydroxydopamine injections made into the nigrostriatal system. After a unilateral lesion, the rat symptoms include sensory and motor impairments and turning biases reflecting motor abnormalities to the contralateral-to-depletion side of the body. In addition, a number of studies on skilled reaching report impairments in the use of the ipsilateral limb. It is suggested that the ipsilateral deficit is secondary to the contralateral motor impairments however. Here we re-examine how rats with unilateral DA depletion use their ipsilateral limb for skilled reaching for food. We provide the first description of an impairment on the ipsilateral-to-depletion side of the body of the rat and the first demonstration of amelioration of the defect using behavioral therapy. Video analysis of rats reaching for single pellets of food with the ipsilateral limb revealed that, although limb advancement and food grasping were normal, paw supination and food release to the mouth were impaired. Consequently, the animals were unable to transport a grasped food pellet to the mouth. Behavioral therapy, consisting of training in a simpler reaching task, strikingly lessened the impairment and improved reaching movements to the point that the rats could transport the food to the mouth. The results are discussed in relation to possible causes of the ipsilateral impairment, its treatment, and to relevant research on human Parkinson patients, indicating that they display bilateral improvements after unilateral treatments.  (+info)

(6/130) Evaluation of an individualised asthma programme directed at behavioural change.

An individualised asthma programme directed at behavioural change was evaluated in asthmatic subjects who reported complaints and impairment, despite adequate medical treatment. Mild-to-moderate asthma patients (n=23) were randomly assigned to a programme or waiting list condition. Outcome measures were: McMaster Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, Asthma Symptom Checklist, Negative Emotionality Scale, Knowledge, Attitude and Self-Efficacy Asthma Questionnaire, Adherence Scale, and peak flow measurements. Both groups were evaluated at three consecutive moments, each separated by 3 months; the programme was delivered between the first two evaluations. At onset the patient received a workbook containing information, exercises and homework assignments. Psycho-education, behavioural and cognitive techniques were introduced during six 1-h individual sessions. Compared with controls the programme group reported less symptoms (obstruction, fatigue), better quality of life (activity, symptoms, emotions), decreased negative affectivity, and increased adherence, immediately after finishing the programme and at 3 months follow-up. All three cognitive variables (knowledge, attitude towards asthma, self-efficacy) and day and night peak flow ratings improved in the programme group but not in the waiting list group. Participation in an individualised programme resulted in improvement of asthma morbidity, and asthma-related behaviour and cognitions, in subjects reporting symptoms and impairment despite adequate medical therapy.  (+info)

(7/130) Persistence of effects of a brief intervention on parental restrictions of teen driving privileges.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which effects of exposure to a brief intervention designed to increase parental restrictions on teen driving privileges persisted over time. DESIGN: A total of 658 parents and their 16 year old adolescents were recruited from a local motor vehicle administration (MVA) site as adolescents successfully tested for provisional licenses. At the MVA, parents completed written surveys about expected teen driving during the first month of provisional licensure. Afterwards, on weeks assigned as intervention, parents watched a video and were given the video and a driving agreement to take home. Both parents and teens completed follow up telephone interviews about communication, amounts, and limits on teen driving at one month (579 dyads), four months (529 dyads), and nine months (528 dyads). RESULTS: The results indicated that both intervention parents and teens were much more likely to report using a driving agreement at each follow up during the nine month period. Significant treatment group differences persisted for communication about driving, but effects related to limits on teen driving that were evident at one month declined over time. Reports for passenger, road, and overall limits remained significant at four months; fewer were present at nine months. There were no differences in amounts of teen driving at four or nine months. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to reach parents through brief interventions at the MVA and successfully promote increases in initial parental restrictions on teen driving with modest persistence for at least four months.  (+info)

(8/130) Acceptability and feasibility of a computer-tailored physical activity intervention using stages of change: project FAITH.

This study investigated the feasibility and acceptability of a new computer-tailored intervention promoting physical activity in a general population, and explored if there are differences in the reported feasibility and acceptability between stages of change, gender, age groups, education levels and familiarity with computer use. The computer-tailored intervention program consists of questionnaires concerning demographics, physical activity and psychosocial determinants, leading to a 'physical activity advice' and an 'action plan'. This feedback was constructed taking the stages of change into account, at content level as well as in the way participants were approached. One hundred and ninety-two participants, between 25 and 55 years of age, ran through the tailored materials, and completed an acceptability and feasibility questionnaire afterwards. This questionnaire contained feasibility and acceptability questions about all the intervention aspects: intervention questions, physical activity advice, action plan and computer use. High acceptability and feasibility scores were found for all intervention parts. Only a few significant differences in acceptability and feasibility scores between stages of change, gender, age groups, education levels and familiarity with computer use were found. These results suggest that this computer-tailored intervention is an acceptable and feasible tool for promoting physical activity for respondents having different stages of change, ages, gender, education levels and computer use.  (+info)

Parenting strategies on raising a difficult four year old?

I have a four year old who has been having some issues at school as well as at home. He is very high energy and I'm trying to find information to better control his outbursts. It's like riding a roller coaster. One day he will be fine, and the next he will be very disobedient and really try to challenge us. I'm looking for books or DVD's that will help us better understand him and get his behavior under control. Any information is helpful. Thank you.
----------

Um, what kind fo 'school' is he going too?

Is there a lot of 'seat work' he is expected to do?

Does he get any time to play outside and if so, how much?

How much of his play time is structured and how much is structured?

Good books are Bringing Up Boys, by Dr. James Dobson, a Christan child psychologist. He's also written The Strong Willed Child and Parenting Isn't For Cowards. I found him helpful, insightful, and down to earth.

Kids this age, especially active ones, need a lot of physical activity. If he is expected to do a lot of seat work in "school" then this is WHOLLY inappropriate. Children this age learn best through play and he needs a lot of play to stimulate his mind and keep him busy.

Physical activity is a MUST for children who are very active and if they don't get it, it will lead to behavior problems that a lot of people tend to think need medication. I suspect if your son had lots to do that involves both structured and unstructured play, his behavioral issues will lessen.

How do I get my behavior under control during my pregnancy?

I've been feeling so aggressive lately, as well as saying things that I wished I wouldn't have said. I feel a little out-of-control.  I don't want to hurt any relationships. How do I get a handle on this?
----------

It is understandable up to a certain point. When it goes past just being moody, etc.. people tend to think you are using your pregnancy as an excuse to be hateful. I think you should try to find an outlet or a way to channel your anger. Do something you enjoy or something that you can do to take your frustrations out, like a hobby. When you are feeling especially aggressive, go for a walk by yourself and think things over.

What are specific behaviors of a controlling personality?

Is there a recognized condition? What is it called? What are the traits and specific behaviors associated with it?
----------

Warning Signs of an Abusive Personality
It is sometimes possible to predict the likelihood of the person you are currently or are about to become involved with being abusive. Below are a list of behaviours and traits which are common in abusive personalities. These are commonly known as Warning Signs.

While not all abusive people show the same signs, or display the tendencies to the same extent, if several behavioural traits are present, there is a strong tendency toward abusiveness. Generally, the more signs are present, the greater the likelihood of violence. In some cases, an abuser may have only a couple of behavioural traits that can be recognized, but they are very exaggerated (e.g. extreme jealousy over ridiculous things).

Often the abuser will initially try to explain his/her behaviour as signs of his/her love and concern, and the victim may be flattered at first; as time goes on, the behaviours become more severe and serve to dominate, control and manipulate the victim.
 Related Pages:
Mr Wrong or Mr Right
The Dominator

Jealousy
At the beginning of a relationship, an abuser will always say the jealousy is a sign of love. He/she may question you about whom you have spoken to or seen during the day, may accuse you of flirting, or be jealous of time you spend with family, friends, children or hobbies which do not include him/her. As the jealousy progresses, he/she may call you frequently during the day or drop by unexpectedly. He may be unhappy about or refuse to let you work for fear you'll meet someone else, check the car mileage or ask friends to keep an eye on you. Jealousy is not proof of love, it is a sign of insecurity and possessiveness.

Controlling Behaviour
Controlling behaviour is often disguised or excused as concern. Concern for your safety, your emotional or mental health, the need to use your time well, or to make sensible decisions. Your abuser may be angry or upset if you are 'late' coming back from work, shopping, visiting friends, etc., even if you told him/her you would be later back than usual. Your abuser may question you closely about where you were, whom you spoke to, the content of every conversation you held, or why you did something he/she was not involved in. As this behaviour gets worse, you may not be allowed to make personal decisions about the house, clothing, going to church or how you spend your time or money or even make you ask for permission to leave the house or room. Alternately, he/she may theoretically allow you your own decisions, but penalise you for making the wrong ones. Concern for our loved ones to a certain extent is normal - trying to control their every move is not.

Quick Involvement
Many victims of abuse dated or knew their abuser for less than six months before they were engaged or living together. The abuser will often claim 'love at first sight', that you are 'made for each other', or that you are the only person whom he could ever talk to so openly, feel so at home with, could understand him so well. He/she may tell you that they have never loved anyone so much or felt so loved by anyone so much before, when you have really only known each other for a short amount of time. He/she needs someone desperately, and will pressure you to commit to him/her or make love before you feel the relationship has reached 'that stage'. He/she may also make you feel guilty for not committing yourself to him/her.

Unrealistic Expectations
The abuser may expects you to be the perfect husband, wife, mother, father, lover, and friend. He/she is very dependent on you for all his/her needs, and may tell you he/she can fulfil all your needs as lover, friend, and companion. Statements such as: 'lf you love me, I'm all you need.', 'You are all I need.' are common. Your abuser may expect you to provide everything for him/her emotionally, practically, financially or spiritually, and then blame you for not being perfect or living up to expectation.

Isolation
The abuser may try to curtail your social interaction. He/she may prevent you from spending time with your friends or family and demand that you only go places 'together'. He/she may accuse you of being 'tied to your mother's apron strings', not be committed to the relationship, or view people who are your personal friends as 'causing trouble' or 'trying to put a wedge' between you. He/she may want to live in the country without a phone, not let you use the car, stop you from working or gaining further education or qualifications.

Blame-shifting for Problems
Very rarely will an abusive personality accept responsibility for any negative situation or problem. If they are unemployed, can't hold down a job, were thrown out of college or University or fall out with their family, it is always someone else's fault, be it the boss, the government, or their mother. They may feel that someone is always doing them wrong, or out to get him. He/she may make a mistakes and then blame you for upsetting him/her or preventing him/her from doing as they wished to.

Blame-shifting for Feelings
The abuser will deny feelings stem from within him/her but see them as reactions to your behaviour or attitude toward him/her. He/she may tell you that 'you make me mad', 'you're hurting me by not doing what I ask', or that he/she cannot help feeling mad, upset, etc. Feelings may be used to manipulate you, i.e. 'I would not be angry if you didn't ...' Positive emotions will often also be seen as originating outside the abuser, but are more difficult to detect. Statements such as 'You make me happy' or 'You make me feel good about myself' are also signs that the abuser feels you are responsible for his sense of well-being. Either way, you become in his/her mind the cause of good and bad feelings and are therefore responsible for his/her emotional well-being and happiness. Consequently, you are also to blame for any negative feelings such as anger, upset or depression.

Hypersensitivity
Most abusers have very low self-esteem and are therefore easily insulted or upset. They may claim their feelings are 'hurt' when they are really angry, or take unrelated comments as personal attacks. They may perceive normal set-backs (having to work additional hours, being asked to help out, receiving a parking fine, etc.) as grave personal injustices. They may view your preference for something which differs from their own as a criticism of their taste and therefore themselves (e.g. blue wallpaper rather than pink, etc.).

Cruelty to Animals
The abuser may punishes animals brutally, be insensitive to their pain or suffering, or neglect to care for the animals to the point of cruelty, e.g. not feeding them all day, leaving them in areas he/she knows will cause them suffering or distress. There is a strong correlation between cruelty to animals and domestic violence which is still being researched.

Cruelty to Children
The abusers unrealistic expectations of their partner are often mirrored in their attitude toward children. He/she will think of children as 'small adults' and blame the children for not being responsible, having common sense or understanding. He/she may expect children to be capable far beyond their ability (e.g. is angry with a two-year old for wetting their pants or being sick on the carpet, waking at night or being upset by nightmares) and will often meet out punishments for 'naughtiness' the child could not be aware of. Abusers may tease children until they cry, or punish children way beyond what could be deemed appropriate. He/she may not want children to eat at the table, expect them to stay quiet, or keep to their room all evening while he/she is at home. Since abusers want all your attention themselves, they resent your spending time with the children or any normal demands and needs the children may have. As above (cruelty to animals), there is a very strong link between Domestic Violence and Child Abuse.

'Playful' use of Force in Sex
He/she may pressurise you to agree to forceful or violent acts during sex, or want to act out fantasies where you are helpless. A male abuser may let you know that the idea of "rape" excites him. He/she may show little concern about whether you want to have intercourse and uses sulking or anger to manipulate you into compliance. Starting sex while you are sleeping, demanding sex when you are ill or tired, or refusing any form of intimacy unless you are willing to go 'all the way' can all be signs that he/she could be sexually abusive or sexually violent.

Rigid Gender Roles
Abusers usually believe in stereotypical gender roles. A man may expect a woman to serve him; stay at home, obey him in all things - even things that are criminal in nature. A male abuser will often see women as inferior to men, more stupid, unable to be a whole person without a relationship. Female abusers may expect the man to provide for them entirely, shift the responsibility for her well-being onto him or heckle him as being 'not a real man' if he shows any weakness or emotion.

Verbal Abuse
In addition to saying things that are meant to be cruel and hurtful, either in public or in private, this can include degrading remarks or running down any accomplishments. Often the abuser will tell you that you are 'stupid', could not manage without him/her. He/she may keep you up all night to 'sort this out once and for all' or even wake you at night to continue to verbally abuse you. The abuser may even say kindly things to your face, but speak badly about you to friends and family.

Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde
Very rarely do abusers conform to the stereotypical image of a constantly harsh, nasty or violent person, either in public or in private. More frequently the abuser portrays a perfectly normal and pleasant picture to the outside world (often they have responsible jobs or are respected and important members of the local community or Church) and reserves the abuse for you in the privacy of your own home. Nor are abusers always overtly abusive or cruel, but can display apparent kindness and consideration. This Jeckyll and Hyde tendency of the abuser serves to further confuse the victim, while protecting themselves from any form of suspicion from outsiders. Many victims describe "sudden" changes in mood - one minute nice and the next explosive or hysterical, or one minute happy and the next minute sad. This does not indicate some special "mental problem" but are typical of abusive personalities, and related to other characteristics such as hypersensitivity.

Drink or Substance Abuse
While neither drinking or the use of drugs are signs of an abusive personality, heavy drinking or drug abuse may be a warning sign and do increase the risks of abuse, especially violence, taking place. Often an abusive person will blame the drink for his/her abuse. However, a person who, knowing there is a risk he/she could be violent when drinking or on drugs, chooses to get drunk or high, is in effect choosing to abuse. The link between substance abuse and domestic abuse is still being researched, and it is apparent that while neither alcohol nor drugs necessarily cause violence, they do increase the risk of violence.

History of Battering or Sexual Violence
Very rarely is abuse or violence a one-off event: a batterer will beat any woman he is with; a sexually abusive person will be abusive toward all his intimate partners. Situational circumstances do not make a person an abusive personality. Sometimes friends or family may try to warn you about the abuser. Sometimes the abuser may tell you himself/herself that he/she has hit or sexually assaulted someone in the past. However, they may further go on to explain that "she made me do it by ..." or in some other way not take responsibility and shift the blame on to the victim. They may tell you that it won't happen with you because "you love them enough to prevent it" or "you won't be stupid enough to wind me up that much". Once again, this is denying their own responsibility for the abuse, and shifting the responsibility for the relationship to remain abuse-free on to you. Past violence is one of the strongest pointers that abuse will occur.

Threatening Violence
This would obviously include any threat of physical force such as "If you speak to him/her again, I'll kill you", or "If any wife of mine acted like John's did, I'd give her a right seeing to". But can also include less obvious threats, such as "If you leave me, I will kill myself". Threats are designed to manipulate and control you, to keep you in your place and prevent you making your own decisions. Most people do not threaten their mates, but an abuser will excuse this behaviour by saying "everybody talks like that.", maintaining he/she is only saying this because the relationship or you are so important to him/her, tell you you're "over-sensitive" for being upset by such threats, or obviously want to hurt him/her.

Breaking or Striking Objects
The abusive person may break your treasured object, beat his/her fists on the table or chair or throw something at or past you. Breaking your things is often used as a punishment for some imagined misdeed on your part. Sometimes it will be justified by saying that now that you are with him/her, you don't need these items any more. Breaking your possessions also has the effect of de-personalising you, denying you your individuality or literally trying to break links to your past. Beating items of furniture or throwing objects will often be justified by saying you wound him/her up so much they lost control, once again shifting the blame for this behaviour on to you, but is actually used to terrorise you into submission. Only very immature or abusive people beat on objects in the presence of other people in order to threaten or intimidate them.

Any Force during an Argument
An abuser may physically restrain you from leaving the room, lash out at you with his/her hand or another object, pin you against a wall or shout 'right in your face'. Basically any form of force used during an argument can be a sign that actual violence is a strong possibility.

What kind of discipline do you suggest with foster children? They are out of control and nothing seems to work

My sister has 2 boys she in the process of adopting. They are only 5 and 6. Their behavior is out of control. She is an awesome mom but nothing she does with them phases them what so ever. People look at her as if she isn't parenting them well but they don't know that these children are in foster care and she can't spank them, she is doing all that she can. These boys have been through more in their short little lives than I have in my life of 30 years. Please help with some advice.
----------

What is their background?  If they come from an abusive environment she definitely needs to steer clear of 'fear' tactics such as threatening (not that I'm suggesting she does that).  She needs to be completely consistent with them.  The one thing that ALL children in foster care have lacked is routine, consistency and stability.  She needs to give these children time to realise that they are loved and protected no matter what.  It's more than likely that the children are testing your sister to see how much she will tolerate from them and how much she really cares.  You have to understand that these children have actively learnt to distrust people, and it's terrifying for them to allow themselves to attach to a parent until they can be sure that they're not going to be sent away.

She should sit down with the boys (make a time one day, an hour or so) and talk to them about house rules.  These children feel very displaced, so making the effort to talk to them about how they are a part of the family and have a right to participate in some decisions will make a big difference to them.  Have the boys decide, with their foster parents, what behaviours are off-limits and why.  Help them understand that the goal of their foster parents is to keep them safe and happy, and to help them make good choices.
She should also talk with them about the consequences to their actions.  Tell the boys that if they are disrespectful of property, for example, they'll lose their toys and priveliges for a set amount of time.  Explain that if they're behaving badly in public or around other people, they will be removed from the situation until they are ready to behave in a polite way around the rest of the family.

I would steer clear of too many warnings.  Once the children have well established the bounderies, and understand that innappropriate behaviour won't be tolerated, your sister needs to work on consistant discipline.  One warning to give them a chance to correct their behaviour, and if they don't it's time to follow through on the discipline.
Persistance is the key here.  However much the children push, she needs to be firm and stand her ground.  I know it's hard and seems to take a long time, but you can't undo years of learnt behaviour overnight.

It might also be a good idea to consider counselling, both for the children and the family.  Some problems can't be solved by good parenting alone, and many children in foster care have traumas and issues that have built up to real behavioural disorders.  She should talk to her case worker aobut the concerns she has and see what can be done for the children.
Good luck to your sister!

What birth control pills will help with acne but not make me gain weight?

I want to start taking birth control pills but i've heard that they make you gain weight and i really don't want to but i've also heard some birth control can help with acne so i was just wondering what one would be the best bet. Thanks!
----------

Not everybody gains weight on birth control pills. I have heard people say different things about different pills so you would have to try one and see how it goes, that's about all you can do. I have heard good things about Yasmin but a friend of mine didn't like it, so it's a very individual thing. I know some friends who didn't gain weight on pills either. Talk it over with your doctor.

Diane 35 is specifically made for acne and it's quite low dose, so you might like to think of that one.

What birth control would you recommend in my situation?

I am getting married this fall and will need a birth control method. I am not planning on having kids for about 5 years and would like a hassle free, low hormone (breast cancer in family) birth control. I was on the pill for many years and that did cause weight gain...that is not desired! I looked into the IUD (5 year one) but heard that it does not prevent conception but just prevents the embryo from maturing. Is this true? Are there any recommendations out there? Has anyone tried the Nuva Ring and not seen noticeable weight gain? Please help! Thank You.
----------

do a web search of the different kinds of birth control you are interested in....Mirena is the IUD with hormones, ParaGard does not have hormones...NuvaRing also has a website..you may also want to research Depo injections and Implanon (implantable device).....check the amount of hormones in each one, then discuss it with your OB/GYN. Be prepared with questions, and then the 2 of you can decide on a plan that is best for you.

What are birth control options for someone with high blood pressure?

So, I just went in to get birth control and I was told that my blood pressure is a little higher than they would like.  I'm going back in next week to get it re-checked, hoping things will have calmed down in my life.
What are options for birth control (besides condoms) if someone has high blood pressure?  Are there just different types of pills, or IUD, or patch, or what?  I forgot to ask when I was at the office.  Any help would be great.
----------

Hypertension does not always prevent the use of the pill or patch....uncontrolled hypertension is the real problem.  If you are hypertensive, once the doctor gets it under control, then birth control pills or the patch may become an option.

In the meantime, other forms of birth control that the doctor may suggest are:
cervical cap
diaphragm
IUD
female condom
contraceptive sponge
spermacides

When uncontrolled hypertension is involved, all products that contain hormones are not recommended.  Those products include:
the pill
nuvaring
patch
depo-provera
mini-pill

Good luck!  Hope your blood pressure was just up due to nervousness or rushing around that day.  I hope it all works out for you.

What does quitting birth control in the middle of a pack do?

My sister started taking birth control and about 2 weeks in, she stopped because they were giving her headaches and causing her moodiness. As it is probably expected, she had a period within 2 days of quitting. Then she had another period in 2 weeks. Will her body naturally reset itself? Or did using birth control mess something up? She doesn't have health insurance so visiting a doctor is the last option for her.
----------

There's nothing wrong with stopping birth control in the middle of the pack, but may take up to six months for her cycle to become regular again.  For most women, it doesn't take that long though.
