However, it was felt that the veterinary graduates undertaking M.Sc./PhD courses did not have enough knowledge of animal husbandry disciplines. Hoard s Dairyman: Moving pasture-based dairy forward. Date: Tue, 10/29/2013. Investments in pasture and people are key to a successful grazing program. by Abby Bauer, Hoard's Dairyman Associate Editor. “Are we still heading the right direction with grazing?” That is the question Joel McNair, editor of Graze magazine, asked the audience at the Missouri Grazing Conference last week in Springfield, Mo. His observation is that graziers are doing well despite all the challenges farms face. However, he noted that grazing is still operating in a “scientific bubble,” and more research for pasture-based dairy would benefit producers. Other challenges he sees with pasture-based dairying include high land costs, poor quality winter feeds, high feed costs and limited hay supplies, lack of skilled employees, government policy and weather volatility. McNair offered the ...

A Whole Lotta Bull. The above picture shows our two bulls, Pedro and Big John. Pedro is a dairy Jersey bull descendant from a beautiful, productive milk cow raised in East Texas, and Big John is a beef Red Devon bull descendant from one of the most famous Devon herds in the world. They are enjoying a friendly head-butt in the pasture. Picture taken by Rebekah Fisher. True Husbandry. Being a rancher means so much more than simply making sure the animals have food and water. A good husband to animals, as in “husbandry” learns what to look for in the offspring produced by his herd in order to make plans for the future. A rancher must decide whom to keep and whom to eat in such a way that allows him to be profitable long-term. For example, selling the fattest animal might make a quick buck now, but it could have been your best potential breeder that may have produced many more excellent quality animals. It is almost a form of tithe or sacrifice in which you “save the best and eat the rest.” It is somewhat...

*  Individually Ventilated Cages
... {{multiple issues. thumb. 'Individually Ventilated Cages' IVCs are cages which keep individual animals separated from other animals and possible exposures, including exposure by air. In laboratory animal husbandry, there is a huge demand for animals that have been kept in disease free conditions and housed in barrier units such as Individually Ventilated Cages. This is very important because when animals are used for scientific research, particularly drug-related research, the animals must provide accurate and valid results. If the animal already has a disease and then undergoes experimentation of a substance that also produces effects on the animals health, it could potentially worsen the effects of the agent being tested causing the animal to experience more suffering than necessary. Special caging systems are often used alongside many other barriers to keep unwanted materials out of range of the animals. IVC-system. The IVC-systems in which the animals are kept in ensures they are fully protected by u...

(1/2393) Antimicrobial drug use and related management practices among Ontario swine producers.

A mail survey of swine producers in Ontario was undertaken during 1991 to describe the types, frequency, and motives for antimicrobial use. Two hundred operations that marketed fewer than 350 hogs per year, and 800 that marketed more than 350 per year were sent questionnaires, 63% of which were completed and returned. Most operations (86%) added antimicrobials to starter (weanling pig) rations, while fewer (29%) added these drugs to finisher pig rations. The most commonly used antimicrobials were tylosin, carbadox, and furazolidone in weanling pigs, and tylosin, lincomycin, and tetracycline in finishers. Water medication of grower-finisher pigs was practised on 25% of farms; 80% of farms had injected at least some grower-finisher pigs with antimicrobials in the 12 mo preceding the survey. Approximately 20% of operations that added antimicrobials to finisher rations did so for growth promotion purposes only, while others used them for disease treatment, prevention, control, or a combination of reasons. Among those not using antimicrobials in finisher rations, 83% did not believe they were necessary and 37% were concerned about the potential for residues in marketed hogs.  (+info)

(2/2393) The effect of streptomycin, oxytetracycline, tilmicosin and phenylbutazone on spermatogenesis in bulls.

To determine whether declining semen quality associated with health problems may be due to certain antibiotic or anti-inflammatory treatments, semen was collected 3 times per week for up to 42 d from 6 normal bulls after treatment with oxytetracycline, tilmicosin, dihydrostreptomycin, or phenylbutazone. No adverse effects on semen quality were observed.  (+info)

(3/2393) Ovarian follicular responses in dairy cows treated with GnRH and cloprostenol.

Lactating, nonpregnant (with a corpus luteum) Holsteins were given 100 ug GnRH (n = 12) or saline (n = 12) and 500 ug cloprostenol 6 d later. Following luteolysis, ovulation occurred 10.1 +/- 0.2 d (range, 9-12 d) after GnRH and 8.6 +/- 1.0 d (range, 3-12 d) after saline (differences between groups: means, P > 0.05; variability, P < 0.001). Treatment with GnRH and cloprostenol resulted in a relatively synchronous ovulation.  (+info)

(4/2393) Evaluation of life-cycle herd efficiency in cow-calf systems of beef production.

A deterministic beef efficiency model (BEM) was used to evaluate life-cycle herd efficiency (LCHE) in cow-calf beef production systems using four breed groups of beef cattle. The breed groups were Beef Synthetic #1 (SY1), Beef Synthetic #2 (SY2), Dairy Synthetic (DS), and purebred Hereford (HE). The LCHE was defined over the lifetime of the herd as the ratio of total output (lean meat equivalent) to total input (feed equivalent). Breed differences in LCHE were predicted with the larger/slower maturing DS being most efficient at each age of herd disposal and reproductive rate. This was mainly because, at any average age at culling, the dams of DS breed group were less mature and so had been carrying relatively lower maintenance loads for shorter periods and positively influencing LCHE. Higher LCHE was predicted with improvement in reproductive performance if there were no associated extra costs. However, this declined markedly if there was a delay in marketing of offspring. As average age at culling increased from 4 to 6 yr, efficiency declined sharply, but it began to recover beyond this age in most breed groups. We concluded that the slower maturing DS breed group may be more efficient on a herd basis in cow-calf systems and that improvements in reproductive rate not associated with extra costs improve life-cycle efficiency. Culling cows soon after their replacements are produced seems efficient.  (+info)

(5/2393) Postweaning performance of calves from Angus, Brahman, and reciprocal-cross cows grazing endophyte-infected tall fescue or common bermudagrass.

Data from 403 Polled Hereford-sired calves from Angus, Brahman, and reciprocal-cross cows were used to evaluate the effects of preweaning forage environment on postweaning performance. Calves were spring-born in 1991 to 1994 and managed on either endophyte-infected tall fescue (E+) or common bermudagrass (BG) during the preweaning phase. After weaning, calves were shipped to the Grazinglands Research Laboratory, El Reno, OK and stratified to one of two winter stocker treatments by breed and preweaning forage; stocker treatments were winter wheat pasture (WW) or native range plus supplemental CP (NR). Each stocker treatment was terminated in March, calves grazed cool-season grasses, and calves were then moved to a feedlot phase in June. In the feedlot phase, calves were fed to approximately 10 mm fat over the 12th rib and averaged approximately 115 d on feed. When finished, calves were weighed and shipped to Amarillo, TX for slaughter. Averaged over calf breed group, calves from E+ gained faster during the stocker phase (P<.10), had lighter starting and finished weights on feed (P< .01), lighter carcass weights (P<.01), and smaller longissimus muscle areas (P<.05) than calves from BG. Calves from E+ were similar to calves from BG in feedlot ADG, percentage kidney, heart, and pelvic fat, fat thickness over 12th rib, yield grade, marbling score, and dressing percentage. Maternal heterosis was larger in calves from E+ for starting weight on feed (P<.01), finished weight (P<.10), and carcass weight (P<.16). These data suggest that few carryover effects from tall fescue preweaning environments exist, other than lighter, but acceptable, weights through slaughter. These data further suggest that the tolerance to E+ in calves from reciprocal-cross cows, expressed in weaning weights, moderated postweaning weight differences between E+ and BG compared to similar comparisons in calves from purebred cows.  (+info)

(6/2393) The importance of genetic diversity in livestock populations of the future.

Farm animal genetic diversity is required to meet current production needs in various environments, to allow sustained genetic improvement, and to facilitate rapid adaptation to changing breeding objectives. Production efficiency in pastoral species is closely tied to the use of diverse genetic types, but greater genetic uniformity has evolved in intensively raised species. In poultry, breeding decisions are directed by a few multinational companies and involve intense selection, the use of distinct production lines, and very large populations. In dairy cattle, the Holstein breed dominates production. Intensive sire selection is leading to relatively rapid inbreeding rates and raises questions about long-term effects of genetic drift. Key questions in management of farm animal genetic diversity involve the distribution of potentially useful quantitative trait locus alleles among global livestock breeds. Experiments with tomato, maize, and mice suggest that favorable alleles can exist in otherwise lowly productive stocks; this cryptic variation may potentially contribute to future selection response. Genetic improvement under relatively intense unidirectional selection may involve both increases in the frequency of favorable additive alleles as well as the progressive breakdown of homeostatic regulatory mechanisms established under the stabilizing selection that is characteristic of natural populations. Recombination among closely linked regulatory loci and new, potentially favorable mutations are possible sources of long-term genetic variation. A greater understanding of the potential that these alternative mechanisms have for supporting long-term genetic improvement and of genetic relationships among global livestock populations are priorities for managing farm animal genetic diversity.  (+info)

(7/2393) The effect of age and teat order on alpha1-acid glycoprotein, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, cortisol, and average daily gain in commercial growing pigs.

The objectives of the study were to evaluate age and teat order on a performance trait, average daily gain, and on physiological stress indicators, alpha1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (N:L), and cortisol in commercial growing pigs from weaning to market age. Pigs (n = 129) from five commercial California farms were weighed and blood-sampled at 28-d intervals from 28 to 168 d of age. Laboratory assays were performed from blood samples to quantify cortisol, AGP, and N:L. Age and facility effects (P<.001), but not teat order effects (P>.05), were found for all three physiological traits and ADG. Pigs that routinely suckled from teats 1, 4, or 6 (numbered from anterior to posterior on the upper teat bank) had similar (P>.05) ADG and BW throughout the production cycle. No correlation (P> .05) was found between cortisol, AGP, and N:L. The use of these physiological and production traits as stress and health indices of growing pigs in commercial facilities has limitations in comparing data between facilities or different ages of pigs.  (+info)

(8/2393) Structural changes in intramuscular connective tissue during the fattening of Japanese black cattle: effect of marbling on beef tenderization.

We investigated changes in structures and mechanical properties of the intramuscular connective tissue during the fattening of Japanese Black steers, using the cell maceration method for scanning electron microscopy. During the early fattening period, from 9 to 20 mo of age, collagen fibrils of the endomysium in longissimus muscle associated more closely with each other, and collagen fibers in the perimysium increased in thickness and their wavy pattern became more regular. These changes were closely related to the increase in mechanical strength of the intramuscular connective tissue and resulted in a toughening of the beef during the period. The shear force value of longissimus muscle decreased after 20 mo of age, concomitantly with the rapid increase in the crude fat content. Scanning electron micrographs of the longissimus muscle dissected from 32-mo-old steers clearly showed that the adipose tissues were formed between muscle fiber bundles, that the honeycomb structure of endomysia was partially broken, and that the perimysium separated into thinner collagen fibers. In semitendinosus muscle, in which the crude fat content was lower (P<.05) than that in longissimus muscle, the structure of the intramuscular connective tissue remained rigid at 32 mo of age. The shear force value of the muscle increased even in the late fattening period, from 20 to 32 mo of age. Thus, the development of adipose tissues in longissimus muscle appears to disorganize the structure of the intramuscular connective tissue and contributes to tenderization of highly marbled beef from Japanese Black cattle during the late fattening period.  (+info)

Is it normal to begin lactating at 30 weeks?

I noticed drops of colostrum (the clear fluid that comes before the milk) this morning before I showered. Normal or too early? I'm 30 weeks today.

I'm just curious because in animal husbandry (my field of expertise) a great many animals don't start to lactate until a few days or a couple of weeks before birth. LOL I know that's probably not the case here but I thought I'd ask if it's normal in humans. Thanks.

lol, yes it is perfectly normal, i think i even started lactating a lil before 30wks. everyone is different.

Do you think animal care compassion should be taught in school?

Do you think kids would be less prone to bulling and aggression if animal husbandry like dog, cat, and livestock care was a class. Such as a 30 minute time a day spent caring for animals and homework on animal care. I work at a chelter and noticed older people take care of there animals mor ethasn younger people who often discard them because they don't care or understand. It is also shown trouble youths benefit greatly or stop aggressive activity when put in camp programs with animals, the same goes for grown prisoners. Kids with behavior issues can learn team work with group horse riding and camps.
This is a yes or no answer
----------

I agree that kids need to learn things like morality and compassion at home, but obviously too many parents are failing in that department.  So yes, I do think schools should offer such a program.

Vegans, where do you stand on me using the wool from my pet sheep?

I'm a vegetarian and run an arable farm

Part of this land is given over to rescueing unwanted animals ( cows, sheep, chickens ) that meat farmers find unproductive and are heading for the knackers yard.  think of me as a "retirement home"

We have to shear these pet sheep every year as part of thier animal husbandry.

I understand that a vegan will not touch wool from a production sheep - fully understand that.

But how would you feel if i made a jumper from the wool off these pet sheep.....they have to be sheared and i'm not keeping them for meat, they live a natural retired life here.

Vegan thoughts please ?
----------

since you yourself are sheering  the animal, and it is necessary, i see nothing wrong with you being resourceful and using this wool. :)

Need Help: Doctor suggested something, but I'm afraid the animals at my workplace will be uncomfortable?

I was recentely diagnosed with asthma. I also work at the zoo, cleaning pens, playing with small animals, husbandry, etc. My doctor told me to keep a bandana over my mouth and nose while I worked. However, the animals are already very comfortable with me, and I'm afraid this sudden change might make them uncomfortable. Will it? What other options might I have, not including quitting my job? I'm also posting this in Zoology.
----------

I would go with your doctor's advice and try the bandana idea. I would definately go with a neutral color though. Some animals, especially birds, may react to bright colors.

Do organic animal husbandry practices make any difference to a vegetarian/vegan's view on morality of meat?

I was curious as to how vegetarians/vegans view people who raise their own animals in a more old-fashioned, natural way (i.e., organic) and thus eat meat that comes from an animal that has been treated humanely and had a normal, happy life. Do you feel that it is a better method of consuming meat/animal products than if it is from a factory farm? I ask this because I used to raise my own chickens (both laying hens and fryers), and I have also raised beef, and hogs. All roamed large areas of pasture and/or farmland (USDA certified organic, no less), were fed properly, and killed humanely/quickly. I felt that I had a deeper connection with where my food was coming from (I also grew all my own veggies), and had a deeper respect for the sacrifice the animal made so that I could eat. Does that make any difference to you (as in, is it morally better), or is it all one in the same?
----------

The thing is, you can treat an animal humanely while you're raising it (and I certainly think that's a damn sight better than factory farming,) but slaughter is slaughter.  I just think humane slaughter is an oxymoron.  Humans do not need to eat meat to thrive so killing animals for food is a choice born out of convenience, cultural indoctrination and selfish taste.

What is being done to stop the suffering of factory farm animals?

I have recently been watching a lot of videos concerning animal welfare and it absolutely breaks my heart to see what these animals go through for human consumption.

Now, this is all that's on my mind, these images of poor helpless animals being slaughtered by the thousands, mercilessly....Can someone calm my nerves and tell me that there is legislation or some sort of legal action being taken against these corporations?

And what can I do as a citizen and a human to stop this?  I am already vegan...
----------

Well PETA protests KFC restaurants who by the way, does not even slaughter any animal.. As for legislation. none. The interests of 97% of the population including the hundreds of thousands who are employed in these facilities and the millions directly benefiting from farms, and other auxiliary industries related to animal husbandry are more of a concern to lawmakers than calming the "nerves" of a few vegans..

Now tell me, now that you have those images in your mind, what sort of lawsuit or legislation are you planning to initiate? Or are you just planning to ride on to another person's/group's work?

What animal products are in which types of makeup?

I know that collagen is derived from boiled animal tendons and bones, and that it is used in lipstick. But I need to know what other animal products are used in what kinds of makeup.
Thanks!

How important is animal life to you?

Nice Guy Wrote in a previous question: “Matt has basically stated that animals are equally important as humans. I'm sorry, but no animals life has as much importance or relevance as that of a human. For one to think that an animals life is just as important as his own is absurd. Can anyone possibly believe that the life of a pig, cow, or chicken can even compare to the life of a human being?”

How do you feel about this? Does an animal's interest in living have any weight in our deciding how we treat said animal? How is an animal's interest in continued existence qualitatively any different than our own?

I'm not trying to give Nice Guy a hard time, I just think this is something that should be discussed, and his answer provides a good starting point.
We have some real deep thinkers responding so far.
Beebs' Answer sort of misses the point of this question. But to the point it does adress I could not agree more.
What I would like people to ponder is that animals have the same interest in their continued existence that you do yours. We have no morally relevant reason to respect a human's interest in continued life wile denying to afford animals the same consideration.
@ Niceguy, I wrote you a responce but it is too long to fit here. You can find it here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/veggiefacts/message/58

Take care

-Matt
@ Nice guy: I’m fairly disappointed in your last post. If you want to debate these issues then lets go. If not, then don’t pretend to engage in one and then back out mid discussion. You say “I believe my goal of simply reducing animal suffering to a minimum, is simply more realistic than that of abolishing it.” And I give you plenty of reasons (and there are plenty more) as to why that will never happen, which you make no attempt to address. You also say, “And though veganism can perhaps make a very small difference, I don't think it can, will, or ever has lead to any significant noticeable change.” I find this a very curious statement to make seeing as the term “Vegan” has only been around for about seventy years, and the theory of abolition has only been with us for thirty years.  Animal welfare on the other hand has been around for at least two hundred years, or if you consider India then around 2000 would be more accurate...
I fail to see your historical basis for making the claim that Veganism and abolition cannot create change, it has not had the chance to. Finally, a Vegan diet (or very near Vegan diet) can work for everyone. Read the China Study.  Also who are these “credible sources” that claim to be against a Vegan diet? Name names, I’m sure it would be interesting to see just how credible they  really are.
First, in response to your comments regarding the health of Vegans, I used “very near vegan diet” in parentheses after the words “Vegan diet” The near Vegan diet was referring to Dr. Dean Ornish’s early work in reversing heart disease. The “Vegan diet” which appeared out of parentheses referenced all other works by prominent scientists such as, Dr. T Colin Campbell, and Dr. Neal Barnard. Even the American Dietetic Association agrees that a Vegan diet is completely healthy by saying, “Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy,
childhood and adolescence.”
Second, with regard to your “intuition” about the animal rights movement, I guess we are just expected to take your opinion because you do not “foresee” a radical change in people’s diet? I think you were right, we are done here in regards to Animal Rights Vs. Animal Welfare.
.  You obviously are ignorant to even the most basic augments from each side, let alone the state of the movement and the struggle that is taking place for the grass-roots sections of the movement to beat back the corporate welfare groups that have done nothing but retard growth. In sum, your information about the healthfulness of Veganism is outdated at best, misinformed at worst, and your “intuition” about the possibilities and direction of the Animal Rights movement is just plain wrong.

I recently saw pictures of a Hurricane Katrina animal rescue.  I saw houses that were destroyed, and next to the house, would be a dog, tied to a steak.... It made me SICK.  Thinking of it now brings up so much anger in me.   What kind of depraved person would do that.  It was not as though there were seconds left, and they were going to be beamed out by Scottie in immediately.  There was a long, slow evacuation process, and they left those animals to slowly die.

If your house is burning down, you try to save your animals.  I will say though, that you save your children first.  But you bring an animal into your house and under your protection, you better care for it.

I once had to do a report on the Psychology of Slavery for an African American Lit class.  One thing I noticed through my reading was that slaves verbally lost their human status.  They were often called animals.  I decided to do an extensive survey about this, but the only group we verbally do such a thing to today is actual animals.  We call one “pet” so we know to love them.  The other we call “animal” so we can distinguish not to care about them and believe we have a right to torture and kill them.  After the animal is killed, we call it “meat” so we never have to make any mental correlation.

My search was to find where we draw the line as we have done this to groups of people over and over again throughout history.  I am just saying the same mental process people used to go through the African American Holocaust is the same mental process we use to make animal slaughtering ok today.  It is something we click on and off, and the words we use to describe a being have a lot do to with it.

I had many categories in my survey, which I gave to the students in all my classes.
One section was “Animals.”  I had questions such as:
“Would you eat a cow?”, “IF you were starving, would you kill a cow to eat?”
… eat a dog, starving, kill a dog, kill your OWN dog
I even went on to compare animals to people.

I found that many people, in a hypothetical world, would kill a human stranger before killing their own dog... and yet, would eat a dog if they needed food.  Familiarity and how much we are willing to know about an animal has a great deal to do with things.

Another tool we use is how to condone such behavior is understanding.  Understanding does not mean language, but culture.  If we had not yet discovered the other hemisphere (I’m in the U.S.) and we set on a voyage to France.  We would not be able to understand the language, but the culture would be similar enough to our own that we would consider them *like us* aka, civilized society.

If we went to a place where people lived of the land, half naked or naked, in small tribes (and we had not been exposed to this before) we would label them as *not like us,* uncivilized and animal like.  This is historically accurate, so you know it is true.

We grow up with dogs.  We can tell they understand us; culturally, we have come to understand when they are happy and sad; we have come to know they feel pain, and we feel for that pain.  We know no such things of cows.

If human culture had made different choices in history and randomly decided to have cows or pigs living in their homes, and decided to eat dogs/wolves, then we would be giving our pet pigs presents on Christmas and have cats and dogs in factory farming without every questioning.

I am sorry I got so very very off track, I have just put a lot of thought into the value we place on life and its relationship to language and culture.

To answer your question, I believe life is important, and no living creature deserves to suffer needlessly.  Yes, an antelope is going to suffer when a lioness or what have you kills it, but that death needed to happen.  However, as a human, I suppose I do consider human life more important.  If I was in a hypothetical situation where someone was going to kill me or kill my cat, I would choose my cat (sorry Simone!) But if it was kill me or kill my nephew, I would choose me.  The optimal situation is of course that I save me, my cat and my nephew, but that’s not what hypotheticals are all about.

If the situation was torture however, I would have a difficult time condoning the torture of another at all.

What all this means on the grand scheme of things?  I have no friggen clue.  You wanted discussion, so I rambled my behind off like I have never rambled my behind off before.
Just email me if you want me to take this long rant off your question.

:)

EDIT: Yes, I believe animals have the same interests in continuing to exist that I do.  I believe they don't want to be tortured, and they don't want to die. (Who would?)  I believe they protect their young; I believe they mourn; I believe they fear; I believe they suffer, and I believe they want.
